  Hi I am trying to sum two function handles, but it doesn't work. for example: y1=@(x)(x*x); y2=@(x)(x*x+3*x); y3=y1+y2 The error I receive is "??? Undefined function or method 'plus' for input arguments of type 'function_handle'." This is just a small example, in reality I actually need to iteratively sum about 500 functions that are dependent on each other. EDIT The solution by Clement J. indeed works but I couldn't manage to generalize this into a loop and ran into a problem. I have the function s=@(x,y,z)((1-exp(-x*y)-z)*exp(-x*y)); And I have a vector v that contains 536 data points and another vector w that also contains 536 data points. My goal is to sum up s(v(i),y,w(i)) for i=1...536 Thus getting one function in the variable y which is the sum of 536 functions. The syntax I tried in order to do this is: sum=@(y)(s(v(1),y,z2(1))); for i=2:536 sum=@(y)(sum+s(v(i),y,z2(i))) end

• Python parsing error message functions

  The code below was created by me with the help of many SO veterans: The code takes an entered math expression and splits it into operators and operands for later use. I have created two functions, the parsing function that splits, and the error function. I am having problems with the error function because it won't display my error messages and I feel the function is being ignored when the code runs. An error should print if an expression such as this is entered: 3//3+4,etc. where there are two operators together, or there are more than two operators in the expression overall, but the error messages dont print.   The call to TEST_FUNCTION below fails with "ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel". A workaround is presented in TEST_FUNCTION2. I boiled down the code as my actual function is far more complex. Tested on Oracle 11G. Anyone have any idea why the first function fails? • [C++] Trouble declaring and recognizing global functions

  I've created some mathematical functions that will be used in main() and by member functions in multiple host classes. I was thinking it would be easiest to make these math functions global in scope, but I'm not sure how to do this. I've currently put all the functions in a file called Rdraws.cpp, with the prototypes in Rdraws.h. Even with all the #includes and externs, I'm getting a "symbol not found" error at the first function call in main(). • Why does local variable names take precedence over function names in JavaScripts?

When declaring a local variable (in the fancy way) with the same name as function the local variable takes presence inside the local scope. For example: (function () { "use strict"; function BatmanController () { } console.log(typeof BatmanController); // outputs "function" var RobinController = function () { } console.log(typeof RobinController); // outputs "function" var JokerController = 1; function JokerController () { } console.log(typeof JokerController); // outputs "number", Ehm what? }()); Anyone know why var JokerController isn't overwritten by function JokerController? I tested this in Chrome, Safari, Canary, Firefox. I would guess it's due to some "look ahead" JavaScript optimizing done in the V8 and JägerMonkey engines. But is there any technical explanation to explain this behaviour?

• Wpf binding to a function

  I've a created a simple scrollviewer (pnlDayScroller) and want to have a separate horizontal scrollbar (associated scroller) to do the horizontal scrolling. All works with the below code accept I need to bind the visibility of the associated scroller. I can't simply bind this to the visibility property of the horizontal template part of the scroll viewer as I've set this to be always hidden. The only way I can think to do this is to bind the visibility of the associated scroller to a function such that If associatedScroller.scrollableWidth > 0 then associatedScroller.visibility = visibility.visible else associatedScroller.visibility = visibility.collapsed end if Is this possible to do and if so how do I do it?   I am trying to display my events from a MySQL database. I'm using the events function. My XML file being returned is pretty basic. I've looked at all of the FullCalendar questions and most of them talk about JSON and point to the documentation for JSON. I can't use JSON. I have to go XML. Can you tell me where I'm off. Here is a sample of what my xml looks like: Grow Your Business on the Web 2010-06-05T9:30 2010-06-05T12:30 O The whole file is prefaced with a tag and closed with a tag. • Python recursive function error: "maximum recursion depth exceeded"

  I solved Problem 10 of Project Euler with the following code, which works through brute force: def isPrime(n): for x in range(2, int(n**0.5)+1): if n % x == 0: return False return True def primeList(n): primes = [] for i in range(2,n): if isPrime(i): primes.append(i) return primes def sumPrimes(primelist): prime_sum = sum(primelist) return prime_sum print (sumPrimes(primeList(2000000))) The three functions work as follows: isPrime checks whether a number is a prime; primeList returns a list containing a set of prime numbers for a certain range with limit 'n', and; sumPrimes sums up the values of all numbers in a list. (This last function isn't needed, but I liked the clarity of it, especially for a beginner like me.) I then wrote a new function, primeListRec, which does exactly the same thing as primeList, to help me better understand recursion: def primeListRec(i, n): primes = [] #print i if (i != n): primes.extend(primeListRec(i+1,n)) if (isPrime(i)): primes.append(i) return primes return primes The above recursive function worked, but only for very small values, like '500'. The function caused my program to crash when I put in '1000'. And when I put in a value like '2000', Python gave me this: RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded. What did I do wrong with my recursive function? Or is there some specific way to avoid a recursion limit?

• How to create a new LaTeX command that behaves something like \verb?

  I have been using LaTeX from sometime now, but have never actually gotten my hands dirty declaring a new command, as I try to avoid that. However, I need to add monospace text often in my document and I use \verb for it which is fine, except that the verb font size is bigger than the normal text font. So I need to change the font size and undo done like \small{}\verb#My monospace code#\normalsize{}. This is not very convenient and mistake-prone. Is there a better way to do this? Can I define a new command for this? How?

• jQuery AutoComplete Plugin not working for JSON Response (sValue.substring is not a function)

  I'm trying to use the autocomplete plugin for jQuery (this one http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Autocomplete). Here is the function in the c++ dll that i want to call from my VB.net code. bool LoadNewTestPlan(const char* szPlanFileName=" "); I've tried many ways in my VB.net but always getting the error : "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt." I have tried passing in byte(), Marshalling with LPStr, SafeArray and nothing works. • Django inlineformset validation and delete

  Hi, Can someone tell me if a form in an inlineformset should go through validation if the DELETE field is checked. I have a form that uses an inlineformset and when I check the DELETE box it fails because the required fields are blank. If I put data in the fields it will pass validation and then be deleted. Is that how it is supposed to work, I would have thought that if it is marked for delete it would bypass the validation for that form. Regards Andrew Follow up - but I would still appreciate some others opinions/help What I have figured out is that for validation to work the a formset form must either be empty or complete(valid) otherwise it will have errors when it is created and will not be deleted. As I have a couple of hidden fields in my formset forms and they are pre-populated when the page loads via javascript the form fails validation on the other required fields which might still be blank. The way I have gotten around this by adding in a check in the add_fields that tests if the DELETE input is True and if it is it makes all fields on the form not required, which means it passes validation and will then delete. def add_fields(self, form, index) #add other fields that are required.... deleteValue = form.fields['DELETE'].widget.value_from datadict(form.data, form.files, form.add_prefix('DELETE')) if bool(deleteValue) or deleteValue == '': for name, field in form.fields.items(): form.fields[name].required= False This seems to be an odd way to do things but I cannot figure out another way. Is there a simpler way that I am missing? I have also noticed that when I add the new form to my page and check the Delete box, there is no value passed back via the request, however an existing form (one loaded from the database) has a value of on when the Delete box is checked.   I'm designing and currently rethinking a low-level interpreted programming language with similarities to assembler. I very soon came across the functions/loops/gotos decision problem and thought that while loops like while and for would be too high-level and unfitting, gotos would be too low level, unmaintainable and generally evil again. Functions like you know them from most languages that have return values and arguments aren't fitting in the language's concept either. So I tried to figure out something between a function and a goto which is capable of Recursion Efficient loops After some thinking I came up with the idea of subroutines: They have a beginning and an end like a function They have a name but no arguments like a goto You can go into one with jump and go out of it again before its end with return (doesn't give back any result, only stops the subroutine) Handled just like normal code - Global scope like goto So I wanted to know: Is the idea above good? What are the (dis)advantages? Would there be a better combination of function and goto or even a completely new idea?

• Laravel - public layout not needed in every function

But since no view is needed in this function, how do I tell Laravel not to include the layout in this function? The best solution that I my self have come a cross (don't know if this is a bad way?) is to unset($this -> layout); from function post_index()...   I came into matrix world from loop world(C, etc) I would like to call a function on each individual member of a vector/matrix, and return the resulting vector/matrix. This is how I currently do it: function retval = gauss(v, a, b, c) for i = 1:length(v) retval(i) = a*(e^(-(v(i)-b)*(v(i)-b)/(2*c*c))); endfor endfunction Example usage: octave:47> d=[1:1000]; octave:48> mycurve=gauss(d, 1, 500, 100); Now, all advice on Matlab/Octave says: STOP whenever you catch yourself using loops and think of a better way of doing it. Thus, my question: Can one call a function on each member of a vector/matrix and return the result in a new vector/matrix all at once without using explicit loops? That is I am looking for something like this: function retval = newfun(v) retval = 42*(v^23); endfunction Perhaps, it is just syntactic sugar, that is all, but still would be useful to know.
