  • How to design shape class

    I want to design shape class. I need to distinguish several different shapes: -Point -Line -Triangle -Circle -Polygons The main purpose of this class is to calculate distance between two shapes. I've all methods for calculating those distances, but I want to have a single method that can be used, it should looks like this: float Distance(Shape a, Shape b) Simplest way to do it is to put a lot of if statements and then invoke proper method but this is deffinitely not OOP. How to design such class in OOP style?

The question is how to find the number of trailing zeroes in factorial of a number in range of 10000000 and 10 million test cases in about 8 secs. Is this the "correct" way of doing things or should we be instanciating the utility class as and when we need it?   • Simple database design and LINQ

    I have very little experience designing databases, and now I want to create a very simple database that does the same thing I have previously had in xml. Here's the xml: <services> <service type="writing"> <small>125</small> <medium>100</medium> <large>60</large> <xlarge>30</xlarge> </service> <service type="analysis"> <small>56</small> <medium>104</medium> <large>200</large> <xlarge>250</xlarge> </service> </services> Now, I wanted to create the same thing in a SQL database, and started doing this ( hope this formats ok, but you'll get the gist, four columns and two rows): > ServiceType Small Medium Large > > Writing 125 100 60 > > Analysis 56 104 200 This didn't work too well, since I then wanted to use LINQ to select, say, the Large value for Writing (60). But I couldn't use LINQ for this (as far as I know) and use a variable for the size (see parameters in the method below). I could only do that if I had a column like "Size" where Small, Medium, and Large would be the values. But that doesn't feel right either, because then I would get several rows with ServiceType = Writing (3 in this case, one for each size), and the same for Analysis. And if I were to add more servicetypes I would have to do the same. Simply repetitive... Is there any smart way to do this using relationships or something? Using the second design above (although not good), I could use the following LINQ to select a value with parameters sent to the method: protected int GetHourRateDB(string serviceType, Size size) { CalculatorLinqDataContext context = new CalculatorLinqDataContext(); var data = (from calculatorData in context.CalculatorDatas where calculatorData.Service == serviceType && calculatorData.Size == size.ToString() select calculatorData).Single(); return data.Hours; } But if there is another better design, could you please also describe how to do the same selection using LINQ with that design? I have changed the listener port in the domain.xml file, but the web application is still trying to connect to the WSDL on port 8080. How can I change the configuration of the web service port? I want TFS 2008 to generate only the deploy folder and not the web folder.   • What is the best practice for accessing Model using MVVM pattern

    I have a database that communicates with webservices with my Model (own thread) and exposes Data Objects. My UI application consists of different Views and ViewModels and Custom Controls. I'm using ServiceProvider (IServiceProvider) to access the Model and route the events to the UI thread. Communication between the ViewModels is handeled by a Messenger. Is this way to go? I was also wondering what is the best way to strucutre the DataObjects At the moment i have the DataObjects that have a hierarchy structure but does not support INotifyProperty though the children list are of type of ObservableCollection. I have no possiblity to implement notifypropertychange on the properties. I was wondering the best way of making them MVVM friendly. Implementing a partial class and adding all the properties or commands that are necessary or wrapping all the DataObjects and keep the Model list and MVVM list in sync. All thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

  • How many databases to support eCommerce?

    I have a system with two databases, one that the customer-facing website uses, the second that is used by the "backroom" order-fulfillment system. I've been asked to run queries from the website to the backroom system. I'd rather not, it seems risky to allow web-based request to run unheeded on the internal system. Additionally, this means opening up routing in the firewall to allow external connections to the internal server. What's the best practice for eCommerce? Run the entire company off of one database? Or individual databases for each system, and middleware to connect them? Sometimes it might be necessary for the web application to pull date from the internal system, but not based on an HTTP request from the internet. I'm sure the best answer is "it depends!" So, if people have a rule of thumb for when to use middleware and when not to, I'd like to here it.

    I have a requirement to use a Fund model in my code. It will contain a fund name and fund code. In the interest of reuse I've poked around the package containing the other models used and found an existing Fund model. However the issue here is that, in addition to fund name and code, it also contains an amount. Amount isn't directly relevant in my context. So, do I: 1) Use the existing Fund model as is, ignoring the setters/getters for fund amount. 2) Put a FundDescription interface onto the existing Fund model for accessing only the information I'm interested in. 3) Make a FundDescription base class from which the existing Fund model could now extend 4) Create a whole new seperate model since the two are slightly contextually different

While I imagine there may be no canonical approach, I had the following idea and am looking for feedback. I would like to maintain readable document ids as much as possible, so a document existing at /document1 would contain a pointer document to all existing versions on the system. The actual revision documents would be at something like /document1/308ef032a3801a where 308ef032a3801a is some random number or hash. Example The pointer document { "_id" : "document1", "versions" : [ "document1/308ef032a3801a" ] } The version document { "_id" : "document1/308ef032a3801a", ... actual content }
