• How to show ModelState.AddModelError when the Model is Empty in MVC4

  I am displaying a shopping cart. I need to check for empty values in Shopping cart and display a message like "The Shopping Cart is empty". When I use ModelState.AddModelError in myAction, it throws an exception as there is null reference in Model. How to display the ErrorMessage. • Using POST or SESSION to capture data

  Hi all! I'm currently working on web application using VB in ASP.NET. Right now I have 1 page with panels that we are using to show/hide depending on the flow. When the user first comes in, he/she is presented with a gridview containing a list of clients. Then the user, clicks a link from a row and is presented a form where he/she can update the clients' info. Originally, I had a HYPERLINKFIELD that put the clientId in the url, then I'd grab the url and do the code appropriately <asp:HyperLinkField Text='<%$ Resources:Resource, ManageClient %>' DataNavigateUrlFields="CLIENT_ID" DataNavigateUrlFormatString="~/clients/manage.aspx?clientId={0}" /> Now, I'm rethinking that and wondering if it's better to use SESSIONs to grab the clientID via this instead <asp:TemplateField Visible="false"><ItemTemplate><asp:Label runat="server" ID="hidClientId" Text='<%# Bind("CLIENT_ID")%>' Visible="false" /></ItemTemplate></asp:TemplateField> <asp:ButtonField Text='<%$ Resources:Resource, ManageClient %>' CommandName="Manage" /> Or use the POST method, which I'm not sure how it works in .NET (but I've used it in PHP) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Proxy object references in MVC code

  Hi there, I am just figuring out best practice with MVC now I have a project where we have chosen to use it in anger. My question is. If creating a list view which is bound to an IEnumerable is this bad practise? Would it be better to seperate the code generated by the WCF Service reference into a datastructure which essentially holds the same data but abstracts further from the service, meaning that the UI is totally unaware of the service implementation beneath. or do people just bind to the proxy object types and have done with it ? My personal feeling is to create an abstraction but this seems to violate the DRY principle.

• Is C# WebAPI worth it? Can I use standart MVC4 to create my API?

  I need to build a massive API and I'm trying out WebAPI instead of default MVC4 projects and it seems that it just makes things more difficult. Can have only 4 methods in controller Get, Post, Put, Delete, if I want more I need to modify route for that particular method FluentValidation won't work with WebAPI so I need to use DataAnnotations which I really don't want to. Can't use dynamic return data-types My question is: Would it really be that bad if I would use MVC4 project and use default ActionResults that return Json? What are real advantages of using WebAPI, why did they even made them in the first place if you can easily convert your project to API?

• MVC4 Model in View has nested data - cannot get data in model

  I have a Model defined that gets me a View with a list of RadioButtons, per IEnumerable. Within that Model, I want to display a list of checkboxes that will vary based on the item selected. Finally, there will be a Textarea in the same view once the user has selected from the available checkboxes, with some dynamic text there based on the CheckBoxes that are selected. What we should end up with is a Table-per-hierarchy. The layout is such that the RadioButtonList is in the first table cell, the CheckBoxList is in the middle table cell, and the Textarea is ini the right table cell. If anyone can guide me to what my model-view should be to achieve this result, I'll be most pleased...   Hello, Thanks for your attention and time. I need your opinion on an basic architectural issue please. In page behind classes I am using a private and shared object and variables (list or just client or simplay int id) to temporary hold data coming from database or class library. This object is used temporarily to catch data and than to return, pass to some function or binding a control. 1st: Can this approach harm any way ? I couldn't analyze it but a thought was using such shared variables may replace data in it when multiple users may be sending request at a time? 2nd: Please comment also on using such variables in BLL (to hold data coming from DAL/database). In this example every time new object of BLL class will be made.   Hello, With regards to the Razor view engine, say I want to render Html.TextBoxFor<SomeModel>(i => i.Name), it doesn't seem that the inline syntax works as in: @Html.TextBoxFor<SomeModel>(i => i.Name) This doesn't seem to work because it interprets the generic as an HTML tag. I could use a code-block approach, but then what's the best approach to output the content? The HTML string returned from this method, do I response.write it, or is there a syntax for it, or what's the approach? Thanks.

  My view is not a strongly typed view and I need to iterate through Request Params in the controller action to determine the values posted. Is there a better way to iterate through the nameValueCollection AllKeys? It seems as though my validators can stay much the same only they should inherit the System.Web.Http.Validation namespace. What I can't figure out is how to add the provider to Web API. • Upload file using jquery dialog not working

  i want to upload file using jquery dialog. I have created a partial view and showing that partial view in the dialog. The problem is, when I directly browse the partial view and upload a file, it works perfect. BUT when I put the partial view inside a jquery dialog, it submits the form, but don't submits the file. So i have null value. I really dont understand what is the difference here!! • Install Quartz.Net as a windows service and Test installation

  In this blog post I’ll be covering, 01: Where to download Quartz.net from 02: How to install Quartz.net as a Windows service 03: Test the Quartz.net Installation If you are new to Quartz.net I would recommend reading the blog post on a brief introduction to Quartz.net. 01 – Where to download Quartz.net? http://sourceforge.net/projects/quartznet/files/quartznet/       Currently version  Quartz.Net 2.0.1 is the recommended download version. 02 – How to install Quartz.net as a Windows service         Go to the download location and unzip the Quartz.net package Navigate to the folder Quartz.Net \ Server \ bin – This is where you will find different .net version installers of the quartz.net packages. For example in the screen shot above, you can see the Quartz.net .net 3.5 and .net 4 packages. Open up the Quartz.net .net 4.0 folder, this folder contains the files you need to install Quartz.net as a windows service Copy the contents of the folder Downloads\Quartz.NET-2.0.1\server\bin\4.0 to the folder %program files%\Quartz.net   5. Open up a new CMD as an administrator and run the below command to install Quartz.net as a windows service /> Quartz.Server.exe install 6. How do I know that Quartz.Net service has installed as a Windows service? Go to run prompt and type ‘services.msc’ you should now see all the windows services installed on your machine. Navigate down to look for Quartz.Net. The service installs itself as an automatic startup Type and log on as ‘Local System’. You can easily change this to your prefer account that you would like to run the service as. If you wanted to name the Quartz service something else then that’s also possible… Can I change the default display name of the quartz.net windows service? Yes, you can! Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Quartz.Net\ and open up the config file ‘quartz.config’ - You can change the instance name - You can change the default thread count of 10 - The port that the service listens to (by default this is port 555) A blog post on more configuration details can be found here. 03 – Test Quartz.Net windows service installation So, I have installed Quartz.Net as a windows service, how do I test whether my installation has been successful. Open up cmd as an administrator and run the below command, C:\Program Files (x86)\Quartz.Net> Quartz.Server.exe –i Since by default the Quartz.net windows service writes INFO level diagnostics (this can be changed from Quartz.Server.exe.config) you should see the service information show up on the console. For instance in the example above I can see that the service is running in a NON CLUSTERED mode, its currently not started and is currently in standby mode with 0 number of jobs executed so far… This was second in the series of posts on enterprise scheduling using Quartz.net, in the next post I’ll be covering how to run your first scheduled task using Quartz.net windows service. • FluentPath: a fluent wrapper around System.IO

  .NET is now more than eight years old, and some of its APIs got old with more grace than others. System.IO in particular has always been a little awkward. It’s mostly static method calls (Path.*, Directory.*, etc.) and some stateful classes (DirectoryInfo, FileInfo). In these APIs, paths are plain strings. Since .NET v1, lots of good things happened to C#: lambda expressions, extension methods, optional parameters to name just a few. Outside of .NET, other interesting things happened as well. For example, you might have heard about this JavaScript library that had some success introducing a fluent API to handle the hierarchical structure of the HTML DOM. You know? jQuery. Knowing all that, every time I need to use the stuff in System.IO, I cringe. So I thought I’d just build a more modern wrapper around it. I used a fluent API based on an essentially immutable Path type and an enumeration of such path objects. To achieve the fluent style, a healthy dose of lambda expressions is being used to act on the objects. Without further ado, here’s an example of what you can do with the new API. In that example, I’m using a Media Center extension that wants all video files to be in their own folder. For that, I need a small tool that creates directories for each video file and moves the files in there. Here’s the code for it: Path.Get(args[0]) .Select(p => p.Extension == ".avi" || p.Extension == ".m4v" || p.Extension == ".wmv" || p.Extension == ".mp4" || p.Extension == ".dvr-ms" || p.Extension == ".mpg" || p.Extension == ".mkv") .CreateDirectory(p => p.Parent .Combine(p.FileNameWithoutExtension)) .Previous() .Move(p => p.Parent .Combine(p.FileNameWithoutExtension) .Combine(p.FileName)); This code creates a Path object pointing at the path pointed to by the first command line argument of my executable. It then selects all video files. After that, it creates directories that have the same names as each of the files, but without their extension. The result of that operation is the set of created directories. We can now get back to the previous set using the Previous method, and finally we can move each of the files in the set to the corresponding freshly created directory, whose name is the combination of the parent directory and the filename without extension. The new fluent path library covers a fair part of what’s in System.IO in a single, convenient API. Check it out, I hope you’ll enjoy it. Suggestions are more than welcome. • How to prevent Google Website Optimizer from making Google Analytics spike Direct Traffic and lower Bounce Rate?

  I am using Google Website Optimizer (GWO) and Google Analytics. Whenever a person (Google Website Optimizer) does a javascript redirect, Google Analytics will change the referrer. When the referrer changes, the traffic source becomes yourself and is changed to Direct Traffic. For Example: A visitor goes to google: searches for my great service. Clicks the link that goes to website page: /home/ At this point, Google Analytics tracks the referrer as Google. However, /home/ has a GWO javacript redirect to a battery of A/B tests. /home-1/ or /home-2/ or /home-3/ When the redirect from /home/ occurs to /home-1/, google analytics on the /home-1/ page now thinks the referrer is yourself and converts the referrer to Direct Traffic since the Direct Traffic bucket is the unknown. I'm really surprised that GWO and GA do this when they both come from google. Now, How does one fix this to prevent the overwrite of the referrer using GWO?

• Troubleshooting Website problems within the local network

  Have an external website which opens fine on some PC's, yet seems to time out (or symptoms of timing out, but never actually does) on others. Seems to only affect (some) of our newer HP Pro 3305 MT Workstations. All of which are running Win7 32bit SP1 with all updates. Older PC's (Win7 32bit SP1 & WinXP) are unaffected. Using Google Chrome & Firefox makes no difference. Opening the website in IE9 Compatibility Mode has exactly the same symptoms. All PC's are on the same local network (Workgroup) using the same DNS server & gateway (inhouse) on the same internet connection, on the same subnet. There is no proxy server, no content filtering, no load balancing etc etc. Only group policy in effect (locally) is for Update scheduling. Local firewalls are all the same (Kaspersky WP4) and our external facing firewall has no IP specific settings. I have no control over the external website, traceroute shows the same destination on all PC's. It is a fairly popular website in our industry (Horticulture) and i'm not aware of any other people (even other sites within our sister companies) with the same problem. Update: Used Fiddler2 to monitor the HTTP request, seems its not getting fulfilled for some reason?!   I want to build a website for a retro thing that was popular in the mid 90s (beginning of the commercial internet). So I want use old designs that was very popular at that time. The first thing that comes to my mind was those "under construction" animated gifs. People often put animated gifs everywhere. But also those awful repeating backgrounds. So yes, I want my website to look exactly like in the mid nineties ;) (please suggest practical and usable features, I guess an Java Applet menu would not work today, or saying on the bottom that this website is optimized for Netscape 3) EDIT: for those that wants to see the result: Retrology

• How can I convince my company to move to MVC?

  I currently write web apps using asp.net web forms and getting my company to move to another technology is like [insert funny line here]. I would really like to start writing apps using MVC, but they fear any type of change. How is the best way to convince/ease them into using MVC? I guess this can go for moving to any new technology. Update Decided to go the rogue developer route and just started using it. I recreated a small app in MVC and learned the ropes that way, and moved up from there.

  Hi everybody, In VS 2010, changing true in a MVC2 project's .csproj file causes an error if you are using Entity Framework. Could not load type 'System.Data.Entity.Design.AspNet.EntityDesignerBuildProvider'. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Config\web.config 129 I want to build views while I'm debugging, and I also want my project compile! Any ideas? Thanks.

  If I add this to the ASPX page: <input id="Text1" type="text" value="Text1Value" /> I would expect to see "Text1" in the list of Request Form keys even WITHOUT setting the runat=Server property. ? request.Form.AllKeys I realize that if I do set that propery, then I will have a server-sided HTML control that I can reference using the name "Text1," but shouldn't I be able to access the text in the text box using the following VB.NET syntax? request.Form("Text1")
