  • Java: How to manage UDP client-server state

    I am trying to write a Java application that works similar to MapReduce. There is a server and several workers. Workers may come and go as they please and the membership to the group has a soft-state. To become a part of the group, the worker must send a UDP datagram to the server, but to continue to be part of the group, the worker must send the UDP datagram to the server every 5 minutes. In order to accommodate temporary errors, a worker is allowed to miss as many as two consecutive periodic UDP datagrams. So, the server must keep track of the current set of workers as well as the last time each worker had sent a UDP datagram. I've implemented a class called WorkerListener that implements Runnable and listens to UDP datagrams on a particular UDP port. Now, to keep track of active workers, this class may maintain a HashSet (or HashMap). When a datagram is received, the server may query the HashSet to check if it is a new member. If so, it can add the new worker to the group by adding an entry into the HashSet. If not, it must reset a "timer" for the worker, noting that it has just heard from the corresponding worker. I'm using the word timer in a generic sense. It doesn't have to be a clock of sorts. Perhaps this could also be implemented using int or long variables. Also, the server must run a thread that continuously monitors the timers for the workers to see that a client that times out on two consecutive datagram intervals, it is removed from the HashSet. I don't want to do this in the WorkerListener thread because it would be blocking on the UDP datagram receive() function. If I create a separate thread to monitor the worker HashSet, it would need to be a different class, perhaps WorkerRegistrar. I must share the HashSet with that thread. Mutual exclusion must also be implemented, then. My question is, what is the best way to do this? Pointers to some sample implementation would be great. I want to use the barebones JDK implementation, and not some fancy state maintenance API that takes care of everything, because I want this to be a useful demonstration for a class that I am teaching.   • Java - Draw Cards and Eliminate Cards Problem

    I am having a problem in this question. I want a system inside a game wherein the player draws 2 cards randomly, and the enemy draws 2 cards randomly. Then, what the program does is to print out to the console the cards the player draw and the enemy's. The cards should not conflict and must not be the same. Then lastly, the program prints out the card that was not drawn by both the player and the enemy.   • RPi and Java Embedded GPIO: It all begins with hardware

    So, you want to connect low-level peripherals (like blinky-blinky LEDs) to your Raspberry Pi and use Java Embedded technology to program it, do you? You sick foolish masochist. No, just kidding! That's awesome! You've come to the right place. I'll step you though it. And, as with many embedded projects, it all begins with hardware. So, the first thing to do is to get acquainted with the GPIO header on your RPi board. A "header" just means a thingy with a bunch of pins sticking up from it where you can connect wires. See the the red box outline in the photo. Now, there are many ways to connect to that header outlined by the red box in the photo (which the RPi folks call the P1 header). One way is to use a breakout kit like the one at Adafruit. But, we'll just use jumper wires in this example. So, to connect jumper wires to the header you need a map of where to connect which wire. That's why you need to study the pinout in the photo. That's your map for connecting wires. But, as with many things in life, it's not all that simple. RPi folks have made things a little tricky. There are two revisions of the P1 header pinout. One for older boards (RPi boards made before Sep 2012), which is called Revision 1. And, one for those fancy 512MB boards that were shipped after Sep 2012, which is called Revision 2. So, first make sure which board you have: either you have the Model A or B with 128MB or 256MB built before Sep 2012 and you need to look at the pinout for Rev. 1, or you have the Model B with 512MB and need to look at Rev. 2.     Hi, I'm trying to create a 2D array of chars to storage lines of chars. For Example: lines[0]="Hello"; lines[1]="Your Back"; lines[2]="Bye"; Since lines has to be dynamically cause i don't know how many lines i need at first. Here is the code i have: int i; char **lines= (char**) calloc(size, sizeof(char*)); for ( i = 0; i < size; i++ ){ lines[i] = (char*) calloc(200, sizeof(char)); } for ( i = 0; i < size; i++ ){ free(lines[i]); } free(lines); I know that each line can't go over 200 chars. I keep getting errors like "error C2059: syntax error : 'for'" and such. Any ideas of what i did wrong?

  • 2D Ball Collisions with Corners

    I'm trying to write a 2D simulation of a ball that bounces off of fixed vertical and horizontal walls. Simulating collisions with the faces of the walls was pretty simple--just negate the X-velocity for a vertical wall or the Y-velocity for a horizontal wall. The problem is that the ball can also collide with the corners of the walls, where a horizontal wall meets with a vertical wall. I have already figured out how to detect when a collision with a corner is occurring. My question is how the ball should react to this collision--that is, how its X and Y velocities will change as a result. Here's a list of what I already know or know how to find: *The X and Y coordinates of the ball's center during the frame when a collision is detected *The X and Y components of the ball's velocity *The X and Y coordinates of the corner *The angle between the ball's center and the corner *The angle in which the ball is traveling just before the collision *The amount that the ball is overlapping the corner when the collision is detected I'm guessing that it's best to pretend that the corner is an infinitely small circle, so I can treat a collision between the ball and that circle as if the ball were colliding with a wall that runs tangent to the circles at the point of collision. It seems to me that all I need to do is rotate the coordinate system to line up with this imaginary wall, reverse the X component of the ball's velocity under this system, and rotate the coordinates back to the original system. The problem is that I have no idea how to program this. By the way, this is an ideal simulation. I'm not taking anything like friction or the ball's rotation into account. I'm using Objective-C, but I'd really just like a general algorithm or some advice. Many thanks if anyone can help!

  • XNA 2D mouse picking

    I'm working on a simple 2D Real time strategy game using XNA. Right now I have reached the point where I need to be able to click on the sprite for a unit or building and be able to reference the object associated with that sprite. From the research I have done over the last three days I have found many references on how to do "Mouse picking" in 3D which does not seem to apply to my situation. I understand that another way to do this is to simply have an array of all "selectable" objects in the world and when the player clicks on a sprite it checks the mouse location against the locations of all the objects in the array. the problem I have with this approach is that it would become rather slow if the number of units and buildings grows to larger numbers. (it also does not seem very elegant) so what are some other ways I could do this. (Please note that I have also worked over the ideas of using a Hash table to associate the object with the sprite location, and using a 2 dimensional array where each location in the array represents one pixel in the world. once again they seem like rather clunky ways of doing things.)

  • 2D Platformer Collision Problems With Both Axes

    I'm working on a little 2D platformer/fighting game with C++ and SDL, and I'm having quite a bit of trouble with the collision detection. The levels are made up of an array of tiles, and I use a for loop to go through each one (I know it may not be the best way to do it, and I may need help with that too). For each side of the character, I move it one pixel in that direction and check for a collision (I also check to see if the character is moving in that direction). If there is a collision, I set the velocity to 0 and move the player to the edge of the tile. My problem is that if I check for horizontal collisions first, and the player moves vertically at more than one pixel per frame, it handles the horizontal collision and moves the character to the side of the tile even if the tile is below (or above) the character. If I handle vertical collision first, it does the same, except it does it for the horizontal axis. How can I handle collisions on both axes without having those problems? Is there any better way to handle collision than how I'm doing it?

But I remember seeing such cleanly formatted log output and they were really much nicer than anything I had seen before and, in addition to being just plain nicer, they were also easier to read for they reproduced some of the logical organization of the code. Yet I cannot find anymore what that library was. I'm pretty sure it was fully compatible with log4j or sl4j.

  • MKL Accelerated Math Libraries for Java...

    I've looked at the related threads on StackOverflow and Googled with not much luck. I'm also very new to Java (I'm coming from a C# and .NET background) so please bear with me. There is so much available in the Java world it's pretty overwhelming. I'm starting on a new Java-on-Linux project that requires some heavy and highly repetitious numerical calculations (i.e. statistics, FFT, Linear Algebra, Matrices, etc.). So maximizing the performance of the mathematical operations is a requirement, as is ensuring the math is correct. So hence I have an interest in finding a Java library that perhaps leverages native acceleration such as MKL, and is proven (so commercial options are definitely a possibility here). In the .NET space there are highly optimized and MKL accelerated commercial Mathematical libraries such as Centerspace NMath and Extreme Optimization. Is there anything comparable in Java? Most of the math libraries I have found for Java either do not seem to be actively maintained (such as Colt) or do not appear to leverage MKL or other native acceleration (such as Apache Commons Math). I have considered trying to leverage MKL directly from Java myself (e.g. JNI), but me being new to Java (let alone interoperating between Java and native libraries) it seemed smarter finding a Java library that has already done this correctly, efficiently, and is proven. Again I apologize if I am mistaken or misguided (even in regarding any libraries I've mentioned) and my ignorance of the Java offerings. It's a whole new world for me coming from the heavily commercialized Microsoft stock so I could easily be mistaken on where to look and regarding the Java libraries I've mentioned. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice.

    Does anyone know how I can get Axis2 to use a non-coalescing XMLStreamReader when it parses a SOAP message? I am writing code that reads a large base64 binary text element. Coalescing is the default behaviour, and this causes the default XMLStreamReader to load the entire text into memory rather than returning multiple CHARACTERS events.
