• My boss is feuding with his boss. My workload is expanding What should I do?

  These two have always had a somewhat shaky relationship when they were on the same level. The other guy was recently promoted to director and now my boss reports to him. On the surface, they appear to get along when they get together, but my boss despises the man and badmouths him every chance that he gets (to peers, subordinates, etc). He believe that the director is setting him up to fail. The Director and upper management is holding my boss responsible for the not-so-great performance by the team as of late. He's been playing games to make my boss look bad. Due to lay offs, we don't have the manpower to deliever the results that we did before...but expectations have not lowered...and my boss is taking the heat for it. Now he's on the warpath and starting to micromanage. He's giving everyone more work. He's forcing us midlevel guys to take responsibility for the level one techs' performance. I'm spending less and less time coding....and more time babysitting vendors, techs, etc. I'm not so sure that's a bad thing because I'm sorta burnt out on coding, but I don't really care for the idea of having to be responsible for others poor performance....isn't that the manager's job? Anyway, do you guys have any suggestions on dealing with the situation?

  There's a project I'm trying to start for Indie Game Development; specifically, it's going to be a social networking website that lets developers meet through (It's a secret). One of the key components is showing what skills members have. Question: I need to know what MAJOR game development roles are not represented in the following list, keeping in mind that many specialist roles are being condensed into more broad, generalist roles: Art Animator (Characters, creatures, props, etc.) Concept Artist (2D scenes, environments, props, silhouettes, etc.) Technical Artist (UI artists, typefaces, graphic designers, etc.) 3D Artist (Modeling, rigging, texture, lighting, etc.) Audio Composer (Scores, music, etc.) Sound Engineer (SFX, mood setting, audio implementation, etc.) Voice (Dialog, acting, etc.) Design Creative Director (Initial direction, team management, communications, etc.) Gameplay Designer (Systems, mechanics, control mapping, etc.) World Designer (Level design, aesthetics, game progression, events, etc.) Writer (Story, mythos, dialog, flavor text, etc.) Programming Engine Programming (Engine creation, scripting, physics, etc.) Graphics Engineer (Sprites, lighting, GUI, etc.) Network Engineer (LAN, multiplayer, server support, etc.) Technical Director (I don't know what a technical director would even do.)   Hey I have Installed UBUNTU 12.04 on vmware work station on windows 7 but when i start up it in vmware i get a message on black screen of ubuntu i.e. " [ 7.3326] pixx4_smbus 0000:00:07.3: Host SMBus controller not enabled! ", and after that it asks for user id and password on black screen and after entering them i still resides in black screen, i am unable to see GUI. please suggest what to do. i am newer to UBUNTU.

• How do remove the CD / DVD install as a source for apt-get packages when installing new features?

  I'm running a Ubuntu server (9.0.4 'Jaunty') as a VMware image. It's a real pain on the odd occasion I need to install a new package to have to fish out the install CD-ROM, and make it available to the VMware image so I can continue the package install. Is there any way to take the original installation media out of the list of source packages - I'm assuming all packages will be available on the internet. Thanks.

• Apps UX Launches Blueprints for Mobile User Experiences

These patterns are designed to work directly with Oracle’s Fusion Middleware, specifically, ADF Mobile.  The Oracle Application Development Framework for mobile users enables developers to build one application that can be deployed to multiple mobile device platforms. These same mobile design patterns provide the guidance for Oracle teams to develop Fusion Mobile expenses. Application developers can use Oracle’s mobile design patterns to design iPhone, Android, or browser-based smartphone applications. We are sharing our mobile design patterns and their baked-in, scientifically proven usability to enable Oracle customers and partners to build mobile applications quickly.A different way of thinking and designing. Lynn Rampoldi-Hnilo, Senior Manager of Mobile User Experiences for Apps UX, says mobile design has to be compelling. “It needs to be optimized for the device, and be visually rich and simple,” she said. “What is really key is that you are designing for a user’s most personal device, the device that they will have with them at all times of the day.”Katy Massucco, director of the overall design patterns site, said: “You need to start with a simplified task flow. Everything should be a natural interaction. The action should be relevant and leveraging the device. • How to best convert a fully encrypted drive into a Virtual Machine?

  I have a Windows XP laptop that uses GuardianEdge's Encryption Plus to fully encrypt the drive from bootup. What I would like to do is install a much larger (unencrypted) hard drive with Windows 7 on it and turn this fully encrypted drive into a Virtual Machine that can be ran in either Virtualbox or VMWare on the Windows 7 host. I've read many howto's that talk about using an imaging tool like Acronis True Image to image the drive then passing that through VMWare's VCenter Converter to turn it into a format that VMWare can understand. Unfortunately this seems to all far apart when you are dealing with a fully encrypted drive because Acronis cannot recognize the file system and attempts to do a sector-by-sector copy of the entire hard drive. This is extremely wasteful since the drive is 120GB but the file system is only using 10GB of that. Even if I were OK with going with an inefficient 120GB sector-by-sector copy, I'm not sure that this would even work under VMWare or Virtualbox. Unfortunately, the Guardian Edge boot-time login comes up only after the hard drive has been selected as the boot device; preventing me from being able to decrypt the drive prior to booting an Acronis True Image CD so that it can recognize the underlying file system. I'm sure I'm not the first person to want to do this but I am having a heck of a time finding solutions to this problem. All suggested/answers welcomed. Thanks

• Is there a clean way to obtain exclusive access to a physical partition under Windows?

  Hey guys, I'm trying, under Windows 7, to run a virtual machine with VMWare Player from an OS installed on a physical partition. However, when I boot the virtual machine, VMWare Player says that it couldn't access the physical drive for writing. This seems to be a generally acknowledged problem in the VMWare community, as Windows Vista introduced a compelling new security feature that makes it impossible to write to a raw drive without obtaining exclusive access to it first. I have googled the issue and found a few workarounds. However, the clean ones seem to only work on whole physical disks, and not on partitions. So I would be left with the dirty solution. In short, it meddles with the MBR to erase any trace of the partitions to use, makes Windows forget about them, then restores the MBR so we can launch the VM. I'm not sure I want to do that. Is there a way to let VMWare acquire exclusive access to the partition without requiring me to nuke it away? What I'd be looking for, I suppose, is a way to put just partitions offline instead of whole physical drives.

  I have set my auditd rules to log when the system time is changed However, our servers are VMs and thus have problems with the time drifting out. We needed to solve this issue so we used a VMware tool to regularly synchronize the time. • Mutliple VMs for Tomcat cluster vs Multiple Tomcat instances on one physical box

  I'm working on a project that will be implemented into production using a cluster of Apache Tomcat instances and I'm looking for the best Hardware/OS solutions and VMs have come up as one option. I have run ESXi/ESX instances before for development and testing, but I'm curious for a hosting environment if having multiple VMs is actually worse than just configuring a server to host multiple instances of Tomcat. These are my guesses: Pros for VMWare Easier Maintenance/Backup for individual VMs (VMWare makes this easy) Can remote login to individual VMs without having to give host access (security?) Easier way to re-purpose machine for OS/Hardware changes Pros for running on one Physical Machine Overhead of only one OS (also no VMWare footprint) Update OS/security changes once One less administrative layer (No VM expertise required) I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas about what the benefits would be for either option.

  Since Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 is no longer compatible with Windows 7, I'm in need of an alternative. I'm not interested in Acronis Disk Director Suite workarounds, particularly not an application as dangerous as a partition manager. I don't want to mess it up my partitions due to incompatibality. Anyone got any ideas? Open Source, Commercial or Freeware, doesn't mater!

• How can I set up a dual-site Storage Daemon in Bacula (mirror the backup)

  On site A, I have sucessfully set up a bacula director on one host, several File Daemons on the hosts I want to backup, and finally one Storage Daemon where the backup actually is stored. If disaster struck the building Site A, I want a second Storage Daemon on another site, Site B. The Filesets, Director etc would be the same, except the jobs will be stored on the other Storage Daemon as well. Are there any best practises on this?

• Distributing my Application inside a Debian Virtual Machine Image-- How to meet GPL obligations?

  I have a Linux application I've developed, and I have created a standalone VMWare Image that people can download to try out the application without needing to install and configure a Linux Server. I created this VMWare Image by starting with a base Debian system, installing a bunch of packages and then configuring all the packages and daemons my application depends on. Upon load, the VMWare Image boots right into an X Server running only my application and no Window manager, so its more of a "Virtual Appliance" than a normal Linux Desktop environment. Users generally will never see a command prompt or any application other than my own. (My application itself I have a handle on the licensing issues of) Now I would like to distribute this image, but I'm not sure how to meet my GPL (and other licenses the various Debian components are released under) Obligations. As I understand it, I have two primary obligations to meet. Providing Copyright and License Information for each component I use. As I understand it, all the information I am required to present is located in the /usr/share directory in the Debian, but since my users generally will never touch a console or terminal, they will never see this. Does providing a text file containing a concatenation of all the files inside /usr/share meet this obligation Making source code available for all components I distribute. Since I am not creating the image from source, but from binary packages, I can't provide the actual source code that results in exactly my image being generated. Does providing an ftp mirror and an offer to send that mirror on DVDs of the Debian source debs for all the packages I use meet this obligation? Anything Else I'm required to do to legally distribute this image?

• How do I remove the tool tips on the launch bar?

  The title is the question. These tool tips stay until I try to click past them. They're annoying since they constantly pop up and block the view of what I'm trying to do. Unfortunately I need the launch bar because Ubuntu is running on VMware and the console does not allow me to use the keyboard for switching tasks (to my knowledge). How do I disable them? I'd post an image as an example, but this site will not let me. UPDATE: unity 5.16.0 UPDATE 2: I discovered that this may only be a problem with users who run Ubuntu on a full screen VMware console that is situated on the right monitor. When the mouse is moved to the left monitor the tooltips popup and remain until the mouse is clicked twice in the VMware console window to make it active. Unfortunately my problem is one involving a rare situation I think. However, I'd love to be able to disable these tool tips if possible. It would also be nice if new features were added that can allow further customization of the launch bar.

• Windows 7 – Fun with VHD

  I’m teaching about TFS 2008 next week and I wanted to use TFS in a virtualized environment so I downloaded the TFS + Team Suite VPC image from Microsoft’s Website.  Working with Windows 7, I opened the VM with the built-in Windows Virtual PC.  The VM loads fine but the problems started when I tried to install the VM additions: I simply couldn’t get them to install properly. I then looked at VMware and found that they have a product called VMware Player that can load Virtual PC VMs.  Tried that but VMware Player failed in converting the VHD. I then looked at VirtualBox.  Created a new VM, attached the VHD and bingo!  Worked like a charm.  The only real caveat is that the guest Windows will ask for the OS CDs to install new drivers so you must have either the CD/DVD or the ISO file (sweet!) to proceed. OK, I got it working in VirtualBox but I’m curious why I couldn’t install the additions from Windows 7 Virtual PC onto a Windows Server 2003 VM.  Anyone has a clue? BTW, thanks to Rolly Perreaux who pointed my to his blog where he goes into great details explaining how to use VM images with VirtualBox.  Good stuff! var addthis_pub="guybarrette";
