  • Android calculator with button click

    - by rynwtts
I am trying to calculate a field named lblAnswer by adding values txtA + txtB. I am fairly new to the android development world and would like to know what is the best way of going about this. I have already added the necessarily edit fields to the GUI. I am now working in the java file to try and create the method. This method has been named doCalc. Here is what I have thus far. public void doCalc() { lblAnswer = txtA + txtB; } It has been suggested that I add more code here is the full code. Thank you for that suggestion. Here is the Java File. package com.example.wattsprofessional; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.Menu; public class MainActivity extends Activity { @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { // Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present. getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.activity_main, menu); return true; } public void doCalc() { lblAnswer = txtA + txtB; Double.parseDouble(txtA.getText().toString()); lblAnswer.setText"t } and here is the xml file. <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" tools:context=".MainActivity" > <EditText android:id="@+id/txtA" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_marginTop="40dp" android:ems="10" android:hint="Write Here" android:inputType="numberDecimal" > <requestFocus /> </EditText> <EditText android:id="@+id/txtB" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignLeft="@+id/txtA" android:layout_below="@+id/txtA" android:layout_marginTop="32dp" android:ems="10" android:hint="Second Here" android:inputType="numberDecimal" /> <Button android:id="@+id/button1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:text="@string/calculate" android:onClick="doCalc"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/lblAnswer" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@+id/button1" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_marginTop="50dp" android:text="TextView" /> </RelativeLayout>

  • ListView items not responding to tap

    - by Justin Williams
    I'm just getting my feet wet with Android and have built a UI that contains a TabHost with three tabs. Each tab is powered by its own Activity. The first Tab contains a listview with a prepopulated set of rows and is built from a custom ArrayAdapter. The problem I'm running into is that none of the ListView rows are tappable. In other words, when I tap on them there is no orange selection. If I use the scroll ball on my Nexus One it will select, but any touch gestures don't seem to be responding. All the UI is being handled using XML files with a main.xml housing the TabHost - LinearLayout - TabWidget/FrameLayout and a nearby_activity.xml file containing my ListView UI <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TextView android:id="@+id/android:empty" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="@string/nearby_no_events" /> <ListView android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1.0" android:choiceMode="multipleChoice" android:divider="#d9d9d9" android:dividerHeight="1px" android:cacheColorHint="#eee" /> </LinearLayout> And the relevant code from my Activity that is set to show in the selected tab. public class NearbyActivity extends ListActivity { private ArrayList<Event> m_events = null; private EventAdapter m_adapter = null; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.nearby_activity); getEvents(); this.m_adapter = new EventAdapter(this, R.layout.eventrow, m_events); setListAdapter(this.m_adapter); } private void getEvents() { m_events = new ArrayList<Event>(); for (int i = 0; i < 100 ; i++) { Event e = new Event(); e.setEventName("Event " + i); e.setVenueName("Staples Center"); e.setStartDate(new Date()); m_events.add(e); } } private class EventAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<Event> { private ArrayList<Event> items; public EventAdapter(Context context, int textViewResourceId, ArrayList<Event> items) { super(context, textViewResourceId, items); this.items = items; } @Override public View getView (int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View v = convertView; if (v == null) { LayoutInflater vi = (LayoutInflater)getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); v = vi.inflate(R.layout.eventrow, null); } Event e = items.get(position); if (e != null) { TextView nameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.eventName); TextView venueNameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.venueName); if (nameText != null) { nameText.setText(e.getEventName()); } if(venueNameText != null) { venueNameText.setText(e.getVenueName()); } } return v; } } } My listview row's are populated by an XML file as well. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:orientation="vertical" android:padding="4dip"> <TextView android:id="@+id/eventName" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:inputType="text" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:textSize="18sp" android:textColor="#000" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/venueName" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@id/eventName" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_marginRight="55dip" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" android:scrollHorizontally="true" android:textSize="13sp" android:textColor="#313131" android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing="true" android:gravity="center_vertical" /> </RelativeLayout> Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • The Windows Browser Ballot Screen Offers Web Browser Choice to European Users

    - by Matthew Guay
Since March, our friends across the pond in Europe get to decide which browser they want to install with their Windows OS. Today we thought we would take a look at the ballot choices, some are well known, and others you may not have heard of. Windows users in European countries should start seeing the so called “Browser Ballot Screen” after installing the Windows Update KB976002 (link below). The browser ballot offers a dozen different browsers, including some you’ve likely never heard of.  They each have some unique features, and are all free, and here we take a quick look at each of them. Internet Explorer 8 Internet Explorer is the world’s most used web browser, as it’s bundled with Windows. It also includes several unique features, including Accelerators that make it easy to search or find a map of a location, and InPrivate filtering to directly control what sites can get personal information.  Additionally, it offers great integration with Windows Touch and the new taskbar in Windows 7. IE 8 runs on Windows XP and newer, and is bundled with Windows 7. Mozilla Firefox 3.6 Firefox is the most popular browser other than Internet Explorer.  It is the modern descendant of Netscape, and is loved by web developers for its adherence to web standards, openness, and expandability.  It offers thousands of Add-ons and themes to let you customize it to fit your preferences. The most recent version has added Personas, which are quick, lightweight themes to let you personalize the look your browser. It’s open source, and runs on all modern versions of Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Of course thanks to Asian Angel, our resident browser expert, you can check out several articles regarding this popular IE alternative. Google Chrome 4 Google Chrome has gained an impressive amount of market share during its short time in the market. It offers a minimalistic interface and fast speeds with intensive web applications. The address bar is also a search bar, so you can enter a search query or web address and quickly get the information you need. With version 4 you can add a growing number of extensions, personalize it with a variety of stylish themes, and automatically translate foreign websites into your own language. Opera 10.50 Although Opera has been around for over a decade, relatively few users have used it. With the new 10.50 release, Opera has many unique features packed in a sleek UI. It integrates great with Aero and the Windows 7 taskbar, and lets you preview the contents of your websites in the tab bar. It also includes Opera Unite, a small personal web server to make file sharing easy, Opera Turbo to speed up your internet when the connection is slow, and Opera Link to keep all your copies of Opera in sync. It’s a popular browser on many mobile devices, and version 10.50 has a lot of enhancements. Apple Safari 4 Safari is the default browser in Mac OS X, and starting with version 3 it has been available for Windows as well. It’s based on Webkit, the popular new rendering engine that provides great speed and standards compatibility.  Safari 4 lets you browse your browsing history in a unique Coverflow interface, and shows your Top Sites in a fancy, 3D interface.  It’s also great for viewing mobile websites for the iPhone and other mobile devices through Developer Tools. Flock 2.5 Based on the popular Firefox core, Flock brings a multitude of social features to your browsing experience. You can view the latest YouTube videos, Flickr pictures, update your favorite social network, and keep up with your webmail thanks to It’s integration with a wide variety of services. You can even post to your blog through the integrated blog editor. If your time online is mostly spent in social services, this may be a browser you want to check out. Maxthon 2.5 Maxthon is a unique browser that builds on Internet Explorer to bring more features with IE’s rendering. Formerly known as MyIE2, Maxthon was popular for bringing tabbed browsing with IE rendering during the days of IE 6.  Today Maxthon supports a wide range of plugins and skins, so you can customize it however you want. It includes mouse gestures, a web accelerator to speed up pokey internet connections, a content blocker to remove unwanted content from sites, an online account to backup your favorites, and a nice download manager. Avant Browser Another nice browser based on Internet Explorer, Avant brings a wide variety of features in a nice brushed-metal interface. It includes an integrated AutoFill for forms, mouse gestures, customizable skins, and privacy protection features. It also includes a Flash blocker that will only load flash in webpages when you select them. You can also integrate Avant with an online account to store your bookmarks, feeds, settings and passwords online. Sleipnir Sleipnir is a customizable browser meant for advance users that is quite popular in Japan. It’s built on the Trident engine and virtually every aspect of is customizable unlike Internet Explorer.   FlashPeak SlimBrowser SlimBrowser from FlashPeak incorporates a lot of features like Popup Killer, Auto Login, site filtering and more. It’s based on Internet Explorer but offers a lot more customizable options out of the box.   K-meleon This basic browser is light on system resources and based on the Gecko engine. It’s been in development for years on SourceForge, and if you like to tweak virtually any aspect of your browser, this might be a good choice for you.   GreenBrowser GreenBrowser is based on Internet Explorer and is available in several languages. It has a large amount of features out of the box and is light on system resources.   Conclusion The European Union asked for more choices in the web browser they could choose from when installing Windows, and with the Browser Ballot Screen, they certainly get a variety to choose from.  If you’ve tried out some of the lesser known browsers, or think some important ones have been left out, leave a comment and tell us about it. • "Class ref in pre-verified class resolved to unexpected implementation" when running android tests i

    - by Mike
I have a module that builds an app called MyApp. I have another that builds some testcases for that app, called MyAppTests. They both build their own APKs, and they both work fine from within my IDE. I'd like to build them using ant so that I can take advantage of continuous integration. Building the app module works fine. I'm having difficulty getting the Test module to compile and run. Using Christopher's tip from a previous question, I used android create test-project -p MyAppTests -m ../MyApp -n MyAppTests to create the necessary build files to build and run my test project. This seems to work great (once I remove an unnecessary test case that it constructed for me and revert my AndroidManifest.xml to the one I was using before it got replaced by android create), but I have two problems. The first problem: The project doesn't compile because it's missing libraries. $ ant run-tests Buildfile: build.xml [setup] Project Target: Google APIs [setup] Vendor: Google Inc. • PHP Browser Game Question - Pretty General Language Suitability and Approach Question

    - by JimBadger
I'm developing a browser game, using PHP, but I'm unsure if the way I'm going about doing it is to be encouraged anymore. It's basically one of those MMOs where you level up various buildings and what have you, but, you then commit some abstract fighting entity that the game gives you, to an automated battle with another player (producing a textual, but hopefully amusing and varied combat report). Basically, as soon as two players agree to fight, PHP functions on the "fight.php" page run queries against a huge MySQL database, looking up all sorts of complicated fight moves and outcomes. There are about three hundred thousand combinations of combat stance, attack, move and defensive stances, so obviously this is quite a resource hungry process, and, on the super cheapo hosted server I'm using for development, it rapidly runs out of memory. The PHP script for the fight logic currently has about a thousand lines of code in it, and I'd say it's about half-finished as I try to add a bit of AI into the fight script. Is there a better way to do something this massive than simply having some functions in a PHP file calling the MySQL Database? I taught myself a modicum of PHP a while ago, and most of the stuff I read online (ages ago) about similar games was all PHP-based. but a) am I right to be using PHP at all, and b) am I missing some clever way of doing things that will somehow reduce server resource requirements? I'd consider non PHP alternatives but, if PHP is suitable, I'd rather stick to that, so there's no overhead of learning something new. I think I'd bite that bullet if it's the best option for a better game, though.

  • Give Chromium-Based Browser Desktop Notifications a Native System Look in Ubuntu

    - by Asian Angel
Desktop notifications from Chromium-based browsers are an awesome feature, but they do not blend in well at all with the native system theming in Ubuntu. Now you can fix that small problem using the wonderful Chromify-OSD extension created by Marco Ceppi. Once you get the extension installed you can give it a quick test run using the link and information we have listed below. As you can see in the image above the new notification style looks absolutely wonderful. Chromify-OSD (Chrome Web Store) [via OMG! Ubuntu!] You can test the new look of the notifications for yourself using the following webpage. Keep in mind that the extension needs to be installed first before this will work though. Note: Enter the following image URL into the Icon Blank (http://www.rgraph.net/images/logo.png) or the URL for an appropriate image, otherwise the notification may not work properly during your test. • Ellipsize not working for textView inside custom listView

    - by aspartame
    Hi, I have a listView with custom objects defined by the xml-layout below. I want the textView with id "info" to be ellipsized on a single line, and I've tried using the attributes android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" without success. If I set the layout_width to a fixed width like e.g. android:layout_width="100px" the text is truncated fine. But for portability reasons this is not an acceptable solution. Can you spot the problem? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:paddingBottom="5px" > <TextView android:id="@+id/destination" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="22dp" android:paddingLeft="5px" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/date" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="15dp" android:paddingLeft="5px" /> <TableLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/info_table" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:paddingLeft="5px" android:paddingTop="10px" > <TableRow> <TextView android:id="@+id/driver_label" android:gravity="right" android:paddingRight="5px" android:text="@string/driver_label" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/driver" /> </TableRow> <TableRow> <TextView android:id="@+id/passenger_label" android:gravity="right" android:paddingRight="5px" android:text="@string/passenger_label" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/passengers" /> </TableRow> <TableRow> <TextView android:id="@+id/info_label" android:gravity="right" android:paddingRight="5px" android:text="@string/info_label"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/info" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" /> </TableRow> </TableLayout>

  • How to ellipsize center-aligned textview beside a right-aligned button when screen width is small

    - by simplymoody
    ------------------------------------ | LONG_TITL... |button| | |------------------------------------| | | I have an app header which consists of the app title and a button. The button should be fixed on the right side but I want the title to be in the middle and ellipsize when the screen is too small. Problem is the title just won't ellipsize even though the button is nearly beside it. Here's what I have so far: <RelativeLayout android:id="@+id/headr" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="center"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/bar_orange" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:minHeight="40dp" android:scaleType="centerCrop" android:src="@drawable/bar_orange"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/Title" android:layout_marginLeft="20dp" android:layout_marginRight="20dp" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerInParent="true" android:gravity="center" android:text="@string/bcd" android:textColor="#FFFFFF" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:singleLine="true" android:textSize="18sp" android:textStyle="bold"/> <Button android:padding="5dp" android:id="@+id/home" android:textColor="#ffffff" android:layout_marginRight="10dp" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:singleLine="true" android:background="@drawable/button_home" android:text="@string/home"/> </RelativeLayout> Is there a way to do this with just RelativeLayout?

    - by RED_
Hi there, Bit of a newbie when it comes to android, only been working on it properly for a few days but even after all the searching I've done im stumped and nobody seems to know how to help me. I have this so far: http://img263.imageshack.us/i/sellscreen.jpg How can I move the text to be besides each icon rather than underneath it? Hoping the gallery won't be moved either. Here is the code i have: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/scroller" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:fillViewport="true" > <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" > <Gallery xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/gallery" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"/> <ImageView android:id="@+id/test_image" android:src="@drawable/icon" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content"/> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="The offcial UK driving theory test application. • Android -Layout Manager not showing buttons

    - by Arun
The following is my code. I want an interface where I have a single line textbox, a multiline textbox with 2 buttons below. I want the multiline textbox to occupy all the space available after rendering the buttons and textbox. For this I created two LinearLayouts inside the main layout. The first one has vertical orientation with layout_width set to fill_parent. The second one is horizontal with fill_parent again. The first one has a textbox for which I have set the layout_height to fill parent. The second one has two textboxes OK and Cancel. When I run this application I get the UI, but the Buttons are very small. I have to set the button height manually. What am I doing wrong here. I don't want to hard code the button height. <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1"> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Name"></TextView> <EditText android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"></EditText> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Contents"></TextView> <EditText android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:gravity="top" /> </LinearLayout> <LinearLayout android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1"> <Button android:id="@+id/okbutt" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="OK" android:layout_weight="1" /> <Button android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="Cancel" android:layout_weight="1" /> </LinearLayout> Thanks, Arun

  • Android - Linear Layout arrangement, not positioning as expected

I don't want to hard code the button height. <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1"> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Name"></TextView> <EditText android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"></EditText> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Contents"></TextView> <EditText android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:gravity="top" /> </LinearLayout> <LinearLayout android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1"> <Button android:id="@+id/okbutt" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="OK" android:layout_weight="1" /> <Button android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="Cancel" android:layout_weight="1" /> </LinearLayout> Thanks, Arun

  • How to switch between views in android?

    - by aurezza
I've tried several methods to switch between two views in my program. I've tried creating a new thread then have the view run for 5 seconds before creating intent to start my main activity. This is the code snippet from the said view class: mHelpThread = new Thread(){ @Override public void run(){ try { synchronized(this){ // Wait given period of time or exit on touch wait(5000); } } catch(InterruptedException ex){ } finish(); // Run next activity Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MAIN, null); intent.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_HOME); startActivity(intent); //stop(); } }; mHelpThread.start(); I can access the said view without error but it doesn't disappear after 5 seconds nor did it switched to main view when I even utilized an onTouchEvent() to detect touch on the screen of which it should have automatically closed. I've also tried adding a button on the said view to manually switch to main view: @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.help); final HelpView helpView = this; final Button btnback = (Button) findViewById(R.id.back); btnback.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener(){ public void onClick(View v) { Intent intent = new Intent(helpView, MainActivity.class); startActivity(intent); } }); } These codes worked, though, for creating a launcher for my program. So I thought that it would work the same if I added an option for help/rules(for the game) that would switch to another view. I've only since started using eclipse for android so pardon my lack of knowledge. Here is also the snippet from my manifest: <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="11" android:targetSdkVersion="15" /> <application android:icon="@drawable/ic_launcher" android:label="@string/app_name" android:theme="@style/AppTheme" > <activity android:name="MainActivity" android:label="@string/title_activity_main"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/> </intent-filter> <intent-filter></intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name="SplashScreen" android:theme="@style/Theme.Transparent"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"/> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name="HelpView" android:theme="@style/Theme.Transparent"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/> </intent-filter> <intent-filter></intent-filter> </activity> </application>
