  • cross-platform development for mobile devices

    What language/framework is best worth learning for mobile application development? My specific situation is that I'm very familiar with Java and C++ (I especially love Qt), but have limited experience with other languages. Some options I'm considering: 1) Learn Objective-C and all the iPhone-specific tools I do have access to a mac. The downside here is I'm restricted to the iPhone, so I'd have to rewrite almost everything if I wanted to branch off into another mobile device (or move later to a cross-platform framework). Even after knowing Objective-C, it seems like other frameworks might be more efficient/faster to code in? 2) Use some existing cross-platform framework for development I've looked at rhomobile, but I only have limited experience with Ruby (and at first glance, it might be a little pricey comapred to other options). Appcelerator also looks popular and nice, but it uses html/css/javascript. Airplaysdk looks good, but it's new and I haven't been able to see much written about it (is it worth going for?). 3) Wait for something better to come along How far away is Qt for the iPhone? That would be ideal, but it isn't available now. So what do you recommend? Productivity/efficiency is my top priority, although learning a useful language for the long term would also be okay.   • Multi Threading - How to split the tasks

    if I have a game engine with the basic 'game engine' components, what is the best way to 'split' the tasks with a multi-threaded approach? Assuming I have the standard components of: Rendering Physics Scripts Networking And a quad-core, I see two ways of multi-threading: Option A ('Vertical'): Using this approach I can allow one core for each component of the engine; e.g. one core for the Rendering task, one for the Physics, etc. Advantages: I do not need to worry about thread-safety within each component I can take advantage of special optimizations provided for single-threaded access (e.g. DirectX offers a flag that can be set to tell it that you will only use single-threading) Option B ('Horizontal'): Using this approach, each task may be split up into 1 <= n <= numCores threads, and executed simultaneously, one after the other. Advantages: Allows for work-sharing, i.e. each thread can take over work still remaining as the others are still processing I can take advantage of libraries that are designed for multi-threading (i.e. ... DirectX) I think, in retrospect, I would pick Option B, but I wanted to hear you guys' thoughts on the matter.

    I am trying to make an AJAX call from several domains to a single one which will handle the request. Enabling Cross domain in Firefox and Chrome was easy by setting the header on the handling server: header("Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *"); But this doesn't help enabling it in Internet Explorer. When I try: httpreq.send(''); it stops with error Access denied. How can this be enabled in Internet Explorer?

    In our organization, we are still on .net 1.1 environment, using javascript, a few open source applications/widgets. Development is done using Visual Studio 2003, grid view, and iframes. Our application works in Internet Explorer 7 and IE 8 (in compatibilily mode). Can anyone give any basic steps we can take to get our application to work cross browsers? What are the starting locations we can get at to start making existing code work in different browsers?

I have a simple application in mind that needs a GUI but I want to make sure it's portable to Linux/Windows/Mac equally well and with minimal (no) change for each platform. wxD is looking like the contender of choice because I know the wx toolkit already. I see fltk4d as a contender and a (unfinished) wrapper around Qt. Are there any other truly cross platform GUI toolkits for D that will go where I want with little effort and what would the the toolkit of choice for people here?

    Hi I am trying to acess a wcf service from a jQuery client Specifically this example http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/WCF_JQUERY_ASMX.aspx#4 All works well when the client webpage is on the same domain as the service As soon as I move the client webpage to another domain it breaks. It cant reach the service and the request fails This happens for all the examples, ASMX, REST and WCF any ideas how to get this working cross daomain?

    Hi, I have need to communicate between two iframes of the same domain, which live inside a parent page on a different domain that I have no control over. This is a Facebook app and the basic layout is this apps.facebook.com/myapp L iframe1 (src='mysite.com/foo') L iframe2 (src='mysite.com/bar') I need frame1 to talk to frame2, but in Opera I can't access window.parent.frames['frame2'] to do the usual cross-domain methods (updating location.hash for example) Is there an alternate way to accomplish this in Opera?     I am Curious about how cross domain authentication work? for example. To sign into Orkut.com you need to to sign in via Google.com. So the authentication happens at Google.com and it sets the cookie. So my question now is how does Orkut.com able to read this cookie or authenticate the user with no other information ? What can possibly go wrong?
