  • Don’t Program by Fear, Question Everything

    - by João Angelo
Perusing some code base I’ve recently came across with a code comment that I would like to share. It was something like this: class Animal { public Animal() { this.Id = Guid.NewGuid(); } public Guid Id { get; private set; } } class Cat : Animal { public Cat() : base() // Always call base since it's not always done automatically { } } Note: All class names were changed to protect the innocent. To clear any possible doubts the C# specification explicitly states that: If an instance constructor has no constructor initializer, a constructor initializer of the form base() is implicitly provided. Thus, an instance constructor declaration of the form C(...) {...} is exactly equivalent to C(...): base() {...} So in conclusion it’s clearly an incorrect comment but what I find alarming is how a comment like that gets into a code base and survives the test of time. Not to forget what it can do to someone who is making a jump from other technologies to C# and reads stuff like that.

  • What the best way to wire up Entity Framework database context (model) to ViewModel in MVVM WPF?

    - by hal9k2
As in the question above: What the best way to wire up Entity Framework database model (context) to viewModel in MVVM (WPF)? I am learning MVVM pattern in WPF, alot of examples shows how to implement model to viewModel, but models in that examples are just simple classes, I want to use MVVM together with entity framework model (base first approach). Whats the best way to wire model to viewModel. Thanks for answers. //ctor of ViewModel public ViewModel() { db = new PackageShipmentDBEntities(); // Entity Framework generated class ListaZBazy = new ObservableCollection<Pack>(db.Packs.Where(w => w.IsSent == false)); } This is my usual ctor of ViewModel, think there is a better way, I was reading about repository pattern, not sure if I can adapt this to WPF MVVM

  • WCF on Windows Phone 7 (Silverlight 4)

    - by Igor Zevaka
Has anyone been able to communicate using WCF on Windows Phone Series 7 emulator? I've been trying for the past two days and it's just happening for me. I can get a normal Silverlight control to work in both Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4, but not the phone version. Here are two versions that I've tried: Version 1 - Using Async Pattern BasicHttpBinding basicHttpBinding = new BasicHttpBinding(); EndpointAddress endpointAddress = new EndpointAddress("http://localhost/wcf/Authentication.svc"); Wcf.IAuthentication auth1 = new ChannelFactory<Wcf.IAuthentication>(basicHttpBinding, endpointAddress).CreateChannel(endpointAddress); AsyncCallback callback = (result) => { Action<string> write = (str) => { this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(delegate { //Display something }); }; try { Wcf.IAuthentication auth = result.AsyncState as Wcf.IAuthentication; Wcf.AuthenticationResponse response = auth.EndLogin(result); write(response.Success.ToString()); } catch (Exception ex) { write(ex.Message); System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(ex.Message); } }; auth1.BeginLogin("user0", "test0", callback, auth1); This version breaks on this line: Wcf.IAuthentication auth1 = new ChannelFactory<Wcf.IAuthentication>(basicHttpBinding, endpointAddress).CreateChannel(endpointAddress); Throwing System.NotSupportedException. The exception is not very descriptive and the callstack is equally not very helpful: at System.ServiceModel.DiagnosticUtility.ExceptionUtility.BuildMessage(Exception x) at System.ServiceModel.DiagnosticUtility.ExceptionUtility.LogException(Exception x) at System.ServiceModel.DiagnosticUtility.ExceptionUtility.ThrowHelperError(Exception e) at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory`1.CreateChannel(EndpointAddress address) at WindowsPhoneApplication2.MainPage.DoLogin() .... Version 2 - Blocking WCF call Here is the version that doesn't use the async pattern. [System.ServiceModel.ServiceContract] public interface IAuthentication { [System.ServiceModel.OperationContract] AuthenticationResponse Login(string user, string password); } public class WcfClientBase<TChannel> : System.ServiceModel.ClientBase<TChannel> where TChannel : class { public WcfClientBase(string name, bool streaming) : base(GetBinding(streaming), GetEndpoint(name)) { ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = WcfConfig.UserName; ClientCredentials.UserName.Password = WcfConfig.Password; } public WcfClientBase(string name) : this(name, false) {} private static System.ServiceModel.Channels.Binding GetBinding(bool streaming) { System.ServiceModel.BasicHttpBinding binding = new System.ServiceModel.BasicHttpBinding(); binding.MaxReceivedMessageSize = 1073741824; if(streaming) { //binding.TransferMode = System.ServiceModel.TransferMode.Streamed; } /*if(XXXURLXXX.StartsWith("https")) { binding.Security.Mode = BasicHttpSecurityMode.Transport; binding.Security.Transport.ClientCredentialType = HttpClientCredentialType.None; }*/ return binding; } private static System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress GetEndpoint(string name) { return new System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress(WcfConfig.Endpoint + name + ".svc"); } protected override TChannel CreateChannel() { throw new System.NotImplementedException(); } } auth.Login("test0", "password0"); This version crashes in System.ServiceModel.ClientBase<TChannel> constructor. The call stack is a bit different: at System.Reflection.MethodInfo.get_ReturnParameter() at System.ServiceModel.Description.ServiceReflector.HasNoDisposableParameters(MethodInfo methodInfo) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.CreateOperationDescription(ContractDescription contractDescription, MethodInfo methodInfo, MessageDirection direction, ContractReflectionInfo reflectionInfo, ContractDescription declaringContract) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.CreateOperationDescriptions(ContractDescription contractDescription, ContractReflectionInfo reflectionInfo, Type contractToGetMethodsFrom, ContractDescription declaringContract, MessageDirection direction) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.CreateContractDescription(ServiceContractAttribute contractAttr, Type contractType, Type serviceType, ContractReflectionInfo& reflectionInfo, Object serviceImplementation) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.LoadContractDescriptionHelper(Type contractType, Type serviceType, Object serviceImplementation) at System.ServiceModel.Description.TypeLoader.LoadContractDescription(Type contractType) at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory1.CreateDescription() at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory.InitializeEndpoint(Binding binding, EndpointAddress address) at System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory1..ctor(Binding binding, EndpointAddress remoteAddress) at System.ServiceModel.ClientBase1..ctor(Binding binding, EndpointAddress remoteAddress) at Wcf.WcfClientBase1..ctor(String name, Boolean streaming) at Wcf.WcfClientBase`1..ctor(String name) at Wcf.AuthenticationClient..ctor() at WindowsPhoneApplication2.MainPage.DoLogin() ... • System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1).

Hi, I have developed an application using .net 3.5 and have deployed it as an .exe on a number of machines with the same environment. However, on one particular machine I get the following error. • quickly close all word and excel

    - by dyenatha
Suppose I open 10 Word files and 10 Excel files and make no changes, how do I quickly taskkill all at once? Because I must repeat several attempts to replicate race, I'm hoping for a command-line solution. I'm willing to try PowerShell and cygwin (1.5) if necessary. The OS is Windows XP SP3 with current patches (still IE7). I tried "taskkill /pid 1 /pid 2 /t" where 1 is PID of EXCEL.EXE and 2 is PID of WINWORD.EXE, but it closed only 1 window of each program. I'm trying to replicate a race where an add-in for Microsoft Office 2007 fails to exclusive-lock one of its own files, which caused the 2nd Office program to stop exiting with a warning: System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file 'C:\Documents and Settings\me\Application Data\ExpensiveProduct\Add-InForMicrosoftOffice\4.2\egcred' because it is being used by another process. at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath) at System.IO.FileStream.Init(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access, Int32 rights, Boolean useRights, FileShare share, Int32 bufferSize, FileOptions options, SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES secAttrs, String msgPath, Boolean bFromProxy) at System.IO.FileStream..ctor(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access, FileShare share, Int32 bufferSize, FileOptions options) at System.IO.StreamWriter.CreateFile(String path, Boolean append) at System.IO.StreamWriter..ctor(String path, Boolean append, Encoding encoding, Int32 bufferSize) at System.IO.StreamWriter..ctor(String path, Boolean append, Encoding encoding) at System.IO.File.WriteAllText(String path, String contents, Encoding encoding) at ExpensiveProduct.EG.DataAccess.Credentials.CredentialManager.SaveUserTable() at ExpensiveProduct.OfficeAddin.OfficeAddinBase.Dispose(Boolean disposing) at ExpensiveProduct.OfficeAddin.WordAddin.Dispose(Boolean disposing) at ExpensiveProduct.OfficeAddin.OfficeAddinBase.OnHostShutdown() at ExpensiveProduct.OfficeAddin.OfficeAddinBase.Unload(ext_DisconnectMode mode)

  • Need some help with constructor

    - by mousey
you have a class A, where you set ctor to be private, so a client can't call "A a;" to create obj on stack. But someday another developer add a new ctor: "A(int)" and try to call "A a(1);" inside main(). So this will create a obj on stack. How do you prevent that?

  • Returning a shared library symbol table

    - by joemoe
For instance: void* sdl_library = dlopen("libSDL.so", RTLD_LAZY); void* initializer = dlsym(sdl_library,"SDL_Init"); Assuming no errors, initializer will point to the function SD_Init in the shared library libSDK.so. However this requires knowing the symbol "SDL_Init" exists. Is it possibly to query a library for all its symbols? Eg, in this case it would return SDL_Init, the function pointer, and any other symbols exported by libSDL.so.

  • Format form fields for bootstrap using rails+nokogiri

    - by user1116573
I have the following in an initializer in a rails app that uses Twitter bootstrap so that it removes the div.field_with_errors that rails applies when validation fails on a field but also the initializer adds the help/validation text after the erroneous input field: require 'nokogiri' ActionView::Base.field_error_proc = Proc.new do |html_tag, instance| html = %(<div class="field_with_errors">#{html_tag}</div>).html_safe form_fields = [ 'textarea', 'input', 'select' ] elements = Nokogiri::HTML::DocumentFragment.parse(html_tag).css("label, " + form_fields.join(', ')) elements.each do |e| if e.node_name.eql? 'label' html = %(#{e}).html_safe elsif form_fields.include? e.node_name if instance.error_message.kind_of?(Array) html = %(#{e}<span class="help-inline">&nbsp;#{instance.error_message.join(',')}</span>).html_safe else html = %(#{e}<span class="help-inline">&nbsp;#{instance.error_message}</span>).html_safe end end end html end This works fine but I also need to apply the .error class to the surrounding div.control-group for each error. My initializer currently gives the following output: <div class="control-group"> <label class="control-label" for="post_message">Message</label> <div class="controls"> <input id="post_message" name="post[message]" required="required" size="30" type="text" value="" /><span class="help-inline">&nbsp;can't be blank</span> </div> </div> but I need something adding to my initializer so that it adds the .error class to the div.control-group like so: <div class="control-group error"> <label class="control-label" for="post_message">Message</label> <div class="controls"> <input id="post_message" name="post[message]" required="required" size="30" type="text" value="" /><span class="help-inline">&nbsp;can't be blank</span> </div> </div> The solution will probably need to allow for the fact that each validation error could have more than one label and input that are all within the same div.control-group (eg radio buttons / checkboxes / 2 text fields side by side). I assume it needs some sort of e.at_xpath() to find the div.control-group parent and add the .error class to it but I'm not sure how to do this. Can anyone help? PS This may all be possible using the formtastic or simple_form gems but I'd rather just use my own html if possible. EDIT If I put e['class'] = 'foo' in the if e.node_name.eql? 'label' section then it applies the class to the label so I think I just need to find the parent tag of e and then apply an .error class to it but I can't figure out what the xpath would be to get from label to its div.control-group parent; no combination of dots, slashes or whatever seems to work but xpath isn't my strong point.

  • Automatic Properties, Collection Initializers, and Implicit Line Continuation support with VB 2010

    - by ScottGu
[In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] This is the eighteenth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. A few days ago I blogged about two new language features coming with C# 4.0: optional parameters and named arguments.  Today I’m going to post about a few of my favorite new features being added to VB with VS 2010: Auto-Implemented Properties, Collection Initializers, and Implicit Line Continuation support. Auto-Implemented Properties Prior to VB 2010, implementing properties within a class using VB required you to explicitly declare the property as well as implement a backing field variable to store its value.  For example, the code below demonstrates how to implement a “Person” class using VB 2008 that exposes two public properties - “Name” and “Age”:   While explicitly declaring properties like above provides maximum flexibility, I’ve always found writing this type of boiler-plate get/set code tedious when you are simply storing/retrieving the value from a field.  You can use VS code snippets to help automate the generation of it – but it still generates a lot of code that feels redundant.  C# 2008 introduced a cool new feature called automatic properties that helps cut down the code quite a bit for the common case where properties are simply backed by a field.  VB 2010 also now supports this same feature.  Using the auto-implemented properties feature of VB 2010 we can now implement our Person class using just the code below: When you declare an auto-implemented property, the VB compiler automatically creates a private field to store the property value as well as generates the associated Get/Set methods for you.  As you can see above – the code is much more concise and easier to read. The syntax supports optionally initializing the properties with default values as well if you want to: You can learn more about VB 2010’s automatic property support from this MSDN page. Collection Initializers VB 2010 also now supports using collection initializers to easily create a collection and populate it with an initial set of values.  You identify a collection initializer by declaring a collection variable and then use the From keyword followed by braces { } that contain the list of initial values to add to the collection.  Below is a code example where I am using the new collection initializer feature to populate a “Friends” list of Person objects with two people, and then bind it to a GridView control to display on a page: You can learn more about VB 2010’s collection initializer support from this MSDN page. Implicit Line Continuation Support Traditionally, when a statement in VB has been split up across multiple lines, you had to use a line-continuation underscore character (_) to indicate that the statement wasn’t complete.  For example, with VB 2008 the below LINQ query needs to append a “_” at the end of each line to indicate that the query is not complete yet: The VB 2010 compiler and code editor now adds support for what is called “implicit line continuation support” – which means that it is smarter about auto-detecting line continuation scenarios, and as a result no longer needs you to explicitly indicate that the statement continues in many, many scenarios.  This means that with VB 2010 we can now write the above code with no “_” at all: The implicit line continuation feature also works well when editing XML Literals within VB (which is pretty cool). You can learn more about VB 2010’s Implicit Line Continuation support and many of the scenarios it supports from this MSDN page (scroll down to the “Implicit Line Continuation” section to find details). Summary The above three VB language features are but a few of the new language and code editor features coming with VB 2010.  Visit this site to learn more about some of the other VB language features coming with the release.  Also subscribe to the VB team’s blog to learn more and stay up-to-date with the posts they the team regularly publishes. Hope this helps, Scott

  • Exception when creating MailMessage

I'm getting a FormatException telling me the address '[email protected]' is invalid (I'm guessing because of the '-'). Here is the code I'm using: var md = new MailDefinition(); md.BodyFileName = physicalPath; md.Subject = subject; md.From = from; md.CC = cc; md.IsBodyHtml = true; MailMessage mailMessage = md.CreateMailMessage(to, replacements, owner); Is there a bug in the .Net e-mail parser? "Best Practice" can be a quote from Schwartz, or 50% of CPAN modules use it, etc...; but I'm happy with well reasoned opinion from anyone even if it explains why the common best practice is not really the best approach. As far as my own view of the topic (informed by software development in Perl for many years), I have seen three main approaches to error handling in a perl module (listed from best to worst in my opinion): Construct an object, set an invalid flag (usually "is_valid" method). Often coupled with setting error message via your class's error handling. Pros: Allows for standard (compared to other method calls) error handling as it allows to use $obj->errors() type calls after a bad constructor just like after any other method call. Allows for additional info to be passed (e.g. 1 error, warnings, etc...) Allows for lightweight "redo"/"fixme" functionality, In other words, if the object that is constructed is very heavy, with many complex attributes that are 100% always OK, and the only reason it is not valid is because someone entered an incorrect date, you can simply do "$obj->setDate()" instead of the overhead of re-executing entire constructor again. This pattern is not always needed, but can be enormously useful in the right design. Cons: None that I'm aware of. Return "undef". Cons: Can not achieve any of the Pros of the first solution (per-object error messages outside of global variables and lightweight "fixme" capability for heavy objects). Die inside the constructor. Outside of some very narrow edge cases, I personally consider this an awful choice for too many reasons to list on the margins of this question. UPDATE: Just to be clear, I consider the (otherwise very worthy and a great design) solution of having very simple constructor that can't fail at all and a heavy initializer method where all the error checking occurs to be merely a subset of either case #1 (if initializer sets error flags) or case #3 (if initializer dies) for the purposes of this question. Obviously, choosing such a design, you automatically reject option #2.

  • NHibernate with Framework .NET Framework 2

    - by Daniel Dolz
Hi. I can not make NHibernate 2.1 work in machines without framework 3.X (basically, windows 2000 SP4, although it happens with XP too). NHibernate doc do no mention this. Maybe you can help? I NEED to make NHibernate 2.1 work in Windows 2000 PCs, so you think this can be done? Thanks! PD: DataBase is SQL 2000/2005. Error is: NHibernate.MappingException: Could not compile the mapping document: Datos.NH_VEN_ComprobanteBF.hbm.xml ---> NHibernate.HibernateException: Could not instantiate dialect class NHibernate.Dialect.MsSql2000Dialect ---> System.Reflection. Dialect.Dialect..ctor() en NHibernate.Dialect.MsSql2000Dialect..ctor() --- Fin del seguimiento de la pila de la excepción interna --- en System.RuntimeTypeHandle.CreateInstance(RuntimeType type, Boolean publicOnly, Boolean noCheck, Boolean& canBeCached, RuntimeMethodHandle& ctor, Boolean& bNeedSecurityCheck) en System.RuntimeType.CreateInstanceSlow(Boolean publicOnly, Boolean fillCache) en System.RuntimeType.CreateInstanceImpl(Boolean publicOnly, Boolean skipVisibilityChecks, Boolean fillCache) en System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) en NHibernate.Bytecode.ActivatorObjectsFactory.CreateInstance(Type type) en NHibernate.Dialect.Dialect. Cfg.Configuration.LogAndThrow(Exception exception) en NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration.AddValidatedDocument(NamedXmlDocument doc) en NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration.ProcessMappingsQueue() and continues...

  • Constructor is being invoked twice

    - by Knowing me knowing you
    In code: LINT a = "12"; LINT b = 3; a = "3";//WHY THIS LINE INVOKES CTOR? std::string t = "1"; //LINT a = t;//Err NO SUITABLE CONV FROM STRING TO LINT. Shouldn't ctor do it? #pragma once #include "LINT_rep.h" class LINT { private: typedef LINT_rep value_type; const value_type* my_data_; template<class T> void init_(const T&); public: LINT(const char* = 0); LINT(const std::string&); LINT(const LINT&); LINT(const long_long&); LINT& operator=(const LINT&); virtual ~LINT(void); LINT operator+()const; //DONE LINT operator+(const LINT&)const;//DONE LINT operator-()const; //DONE LINT operator-(const LINT&)const;//DONE LINT operator*(const LINT&)const;//DONE LINT operator/(const LINT&)const;///WAITS FOR APPROVAL LINT& operator+=(const LINT&);//DONE LINT& operator-=(const LINT&);//DONE LINT& operator*=(const LINT&);//DONE LINT operator/=(const LINT&);///WAITS FOR APPROVAL }; in line number 3 instead of assignment optor ctor is invoked. Why? I'm willing to uppload entire solution on some server otherwise it's hard to put everything in here. I can also upload video file. Another thing is that when I implement this assignment optor I'm getting an error that this optor is already in obj file? What's going on?
