  • NTFS Permissions - Access Denied even though Explicit Allow and no Deny

    - by chris613
I'm hoping someone can help me with this NTFS permissions problem. The short version is that I can't write a new file in F:\SomeDir even though I seem to be granted full permissions via both the "Domain Admins" group and a second unprivileged group. The "Effective Permissions" tab in the explorer permissions UI shows that I have full control, and there are no "Deny"s anywhere in the ACL or anything else that looks unusual. I am logged into the machine over RDP and accessing the disk directly, not through a share. F:\SomeDir>set U USERDNSDOMAIN=THEOFFICE.LOCAL USERDOMAIN=THEOFFICE USERNAME=thisisme USERPROFILE=C:\Users\thisisme F:\SomeDir>icacls . . BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(F) CREATOR OWNER:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) THEOFFICE\Domain Admins:(I)(OI)(CI)(F) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(OI)(CI)(F) BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) BUILTIN\Users:(I)(OI)(CI)(RX) Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files F:\SomeDir>net group /domain "Domain Admins" The request will be processed at a domain controller for domain THEOFFICE.local. Group name Domain Admins Comment Designated administrators of the domain Members ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Administrator thatguy thisisme The command completed successfully. F:\SomeDir>echo "whyUNoCreateFile?" > whyUNoCreateFile.txt Access is denied. I searched for answers and came across similar problems that lead to UAC (ex. Why does removing the EVERYONE group prevent domain admins from accessing a drive? ). I can't turn off UAC at the moment, so I try a "regular" group that I'm also part of. This group has no special rights assignments and is not part of any administrative groups. Still no dice: [***** This one command executed in an elevated shell *****] F:\SomeDir>icacls . /grant THEOFFICE\iteveryone:(OI)(CI)F processed file: . Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files F:\SomeDir>net group /domain "iteveryone" The request will be processed at a domain controller for domain THEOFFICE.local. Group name ITeveryone Comment Members ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Administrator thatguy thisisme otherguy someitguy The command completed successfully. F:\ScanningVMsForIBM>echo y > u Access is denied. As you can see, using a "regular" group didn't help. I have logged out and back in to the server to ensure my login token is up to date, and at any rate I belonged to these groups before the server was created. If I grant explicit permission to myself, it does allow me to write files: [***** This one command executed in an elevated shell *****] F:\SomeDir>icacls . /grant THEOFFICE\thisisme:(OI)(CI)F processed file: . Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files F:\SomeDir>echo y > u F:\SomeDir>type u y My requirement is for the "Domain Admins" group to have Full Control, or if that's not possible without disabling UAC, then a second group will do, but I can't get either to work. I'm really stumped. Can someone please point out what I could be overlooking?

  • Appropriate SQL Server Permissions for Developers

    - by BJ Safdie
After a couple of Google searches and a quick look at questions here, I cannot seem to find what I thought would be a cookbook answer for SQL Server permissions. As I often see in small shops, most developers here were using an admin account for SQL Server while developing. I want to set up roles and permissions that I can assign to developers so that we can get our jobs done, but also do so with the minimum permissions required. Can anyone offer advice on what SQL Server permissions to assign? Components: SQL Server 2008 SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) 2008 SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2008 Platforms: Production Staging/QA Development/Integration We are running "Mixed Mode" security because of some legacy apps and networks, but are moving to Windows Auth. I am not sure if that really affects the role set up. I plan to set up access for Developers to Prod and Staging/QA DBs as Read-Only. However, I still want developers to retain the ability to run Profiling. We need Deployment accounts with higher privilege levels. We are currently trying to figure out exactly what privileges we need for SSIS package deployments. Within the Development Server, Developers need broad privileges. However, I am not sure that just making them all admins is really the best choice. It's hard to believe that no one has published a decent example script that sets up these kinds of roles with a good set of appropriate permissions for developers and deployers. We can probably figure this all out by locking things down and then adding permissions as we discover the need, but that will be way too big a PITA for everyone. Can anyone point me to, or provide, a good exemplar for permissions for these kinds of roles on these kinds of platforms?

  • How to only allow particular programs to modify certain files?

    - by Mehrdad
I want to make certain directories on my drives read-only except to particular programs who will have full permissions. For example, the Microsoft Word might be allowed to modify the files in my Documents folder, but other programs (such as the Command Prompt) would not be allowed to. I'm guessing this requires a file system filter driver of some sort, but I don't know which programs have this capability. Is there any (free) program that can do this for me?

  • IIS Permissions or NTFS Permissions?

    - by Jason
I currently have a Windows Server 2003 setup to serve multiple sites via IIS. One of our directories needs to allow access to only 1 specific AD Security Group. I know there are two ways to accomplish this. One is using IIS to add permissions and the other is to set permissions on the folder/directory itself. A script runs at night and populates the content so users only need read permissions to view it in a browser. My question is which one is preferred?

  • What ways are there to set permissions on an Exchange 2003 mailbox?

    - by HopelessN00b
I'm having a difficult/impossible time tracing down a permissions issue on an Exchange 2003 mailbox, and I was wondering if I'm missing any technical possibilities here. The basic question is what ways are there to set a user's permissions to access a mailbox in Exchange 2003? I know of two. Permissions on the mailbox itself (Mailbox Rights) and having delegated rights. And then, if it's possible, how would one view all the permissions (including delegated permissions) on the mailbox? The situation is that a new user who's been set up "exactly like all the others" in his department (pretty sure he was copied via the right click option in ADUC, in fact) can't access a specific shared mailbox, which I've been assured about a dozen other people do have access to and access on a regular basis. As to how they got permissions to the mailbox, no one knows, so it must have been granted by a white wizard whose spell has since worn off, so now IT has to handle it instead. Anyway... This mailbox is a normal AD user, created as a service account, for which no one knows the password (of course), so it's probably not the case that this service account was being used to delegate permissions. Upon taking examining the Mailbox Rights directly... Here are the permissions I see: This leads me to believe that one of two things are happening - the managers have been delegating full mailbox permissions to the rest of the department, or everyone's logging in using... not their own account. But, before I get too excited about the prospect of busting out the LART and strolling over to that department, I want to make sure I'm not missing another possible explanation. Like most of the rest of the world, I ditched Exchange 2003 at the earliest possible opportunity, and had been looking forward to never seeing it again, so I'm a bit rusty on the intricacies of how it [mostly, sort of] works. Anyone see any or possibilities, or things I may have missed, or does the LART get to come out and play?

  • How To Grant Folder permissions for WMSvc IIS

    - by LillyPop
Im using Web Deploy with IIS7 and I want to grant permissions on a web site physical folder. Ive done this before (as I have another physical folder with r/w for WMSvc) but I have forgotten how I did it! When I go to the physical folder Security Tab Edit Add Object Name = WMSvc Check Names, I get 'An object named WMSvc cannot be found'?? I have the 'WMSvc' object listed fine in the 'Groups or usernames' on the other Folder I mentioned above. I feel a bit daft, what am I doing wrong, how can give folder permissions to WMSvc object on a physical folder?

  • .htaccess - permissions forbidden

    - by user1732521
I have an error with a new virtual host that I can't figure out.. My .htaccess doesn't have web access (403). [Thu Oct 31 17:51:01 2013] [crit] [client ] (13)Permission denied: /srv/data_disk/www /site.dev/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable I have set the permissions for the complete htdocs folder to 755, and to owned by my regular user and group (www-data). I have other vhosts set up with the same user and lesser permissions (rw-rw---) on the .htaccess. The virtual hosts are also setup in the same way.. as far a I can tell.. Thanks!

  • getfacl command and Linux file permissions - getting 403 error when accessing Wordpress

    - by tommytwoeyes
    I'm configuring Wordpress for a friend, and I just screwed up the Wordpress directory permissions (I suspect) using setfacl. Webfaction doesn't allow sudo or allow me to change the directory group ownership using chown. Now it appears that something I did is causing the entire application to give me 403 errors when I try to access it. The current directory listing looks like this (I set the whole thing to 777 temporarily to try to recover access to it): drwxrwsr-x+ 6 myusername myusername 4096 Mar 2 07:07 ./ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Feb 25 19:48 ../ -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 286 Mar 2 06:33 gzip.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 4831 Mar 4 20:02 .htaccess -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 397 Feb 25 19:49 index.php -rw-rw-r--+ 1 myusername myusername 15606 Feb 25 19:49 license.txt -rw-rw-r--+ 1 myusername myusername 9200 Feb 25 19:49 readme.html drwxrwsr-x+ 6 myusername myusername 4096 Feb 25 19:49 .svn/ -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 4337 Feb 25 19:49 wp-activate.php drwxr-xr-x+ 10 myusername myusername 4096 Mar 4 20:03 wp-admin/ -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 40283 Feb 25 19:49 wp-app.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 226 Feb 25 19:49 wp-atom.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 274 Feb 25 19:49 wp-blog-header.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 3931 Feb 25 19:49 wp-comments-post.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 244 Feb 25 19:49 wp-commentsrss2.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 3485 Feb 25 20:15 wp-config.php drwxr-xr-x+ 6 myusername myusername 4096 Feb 26 08:52 wp-content/ -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 1255 Feb 25 19:49 wp-cron.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 246 Feb 25 19:49 wp-feed.php drwxrwxr-x+ 9 myusername myusername 4096 Feb 25 19:49 wp-includes/ -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 1997 Feb 25 19:49 wp-links-opml.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 2453 Feb 25 19:49 wp-load.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 27787 Feb 25 19:49 wp-login.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 7774 Feb 25 19:49 wp-mail.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 494 Feb 25 19:49 wp-pass.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 224 Feb 25 19:49 wp-rdf.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 334 Feb 25 19:49 wp-register.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 226 Feb 25 19:49 wp-rss2.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 224 Feb 25 19:49 wp-rss.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 9655 Feb 25 19:49 wp-settings.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 18644 Feb 25 19:49 wp-signup.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 3702 Feb 25 19:49 wp-trackback.php -rwxrwxr-x+ 1 myusername myusername 3210 Feb 25 19:49 xmlrpc.php The getfacl output looks like this: # file: . # owner: myusername # group: myusername user::rwx group::r-x group:apache:rw- mask::rwx other::r-x I simply wanted to change the ownership to myusername:apache and the file permissions to 755.   • Folder Permissions Apache

    - by user1671777
I have a site that will need to store file uploads by the user once logged in. Currently I have a folder with permissions opened up, (777), because that was the only way I could get mkdir() to work. When the user uploads a file, the application creates several directories based on the user, in this directory then eventually stores the file. Couple of questions: How do I setup the permissions on each of these folders and sub folders so that only logged in users to my site have access to them? Is this even possible? Is there a more secure way of storing .pdf, word docs, and text files?

  • Launching mysql server: same permissions for root and for user

    - by toinbis
Hi folks, have been directed here from stackoverflow here, am reposting the question and adding my.cnf at the end of a post. so far in my 10+ years experience with linux, all the permission problems I've ever encountered, have been successfully solved with chmod -R 777 /path/where/the/problem/has/occured (every lie has a grain of truth in it :) This time the trick doesn't work, so I'm turning to you for help. I'm compiling mysql server from scratch with zc.buildout (www . buildout . org). I do launch it by executing /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, this works. The thing is that i'll be launching this from within supervisor (supervisord . org) script, and when used on the deployment server, it'll need it to be launched with root permissions(so that nginx server, launched with the same script, would have access to 80 port). The problem is that sudo /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, fails, generating the error, posted bellow, in mysql error log (apache and nginx works as expected). http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/216045 suggests, that "there are two errors: A missing table and a file system that mysqld doesn't have access to". Mysqldatadir and all the mysql server binary files has 777 permissions, talbe mysql.plugin does exist and has 777 permissions (why Can't open the mysql.plugin table?), "sudo touch mysql_datadir/tmp/file" does create file (why Can't create/write to file /home/toinbis/.../runtime/mysql_datadir/tmp/ib4e9Huz?). chgrp -R mysql mysql_datadir and adding "root, toinbis, mysql" users to mysql group ( cat /etc/group | grep mysql outputs mysql:x:124:root,toinbis,mysql) has no effect - when i launch it as a casual user, it starts, when as a root - it fails. Does mysql server, even started as root, tries to operate as other, let's say, 'mysql' user? but even in that case, adding mysql user to mysql group and making all the mysql_datadirs files belong to mysql group should make things work smoothly. I do know that it might be a better idea to simply to launch one the nginx as root and mysql - as just a user, but this error irritated me enough so to devote enough energy so not to only "make things work", but to also make things work exactly as i wanted it initially, so to have a proof of concept that it's possible. and this is the generated error: 091213 20:02:55 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /home/toinbis/.../runtime/mysql_datadir /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/libexec/mysqld: Table 'plugin' is read only 091213 20:02:55 [ERROR] Can't open the mysql.plugin table. • Windows 8 permissions vs Windows 7 [closed]

    - by Saturn2888
Possible Duplicate: How do I disable administrator prompt in Windows 8? When I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, I noticed some permissions issues extremely problematic to my using the OS. When running Windows 7 or Vista with UAC off, I was able to navigate around the filesystem as if I was on Windows XP and prior such that I didn't have to run as administrator and could copy and edit files wherever I wanted. In Windows 8, turning off UAC no longer does this. Does anyone know how to get Windows 8's permissions to act like Windows 7 and Vista when UAC is disabled? NOTE: I did a clean install on my laptop with Windows 8, and it has the same issues.

  • IIS 6.0 FTP Folder Permissions

    - by Beuy
I have a IIS Ftp website setup like so \ftp\users\domain\public\public Software that runs on clients computers logs into the FTP by specifying domain\public and moving to public, it then uploads or downloads files / folders into that area. I wan't to restrict the permissions on \ftp\users\domain\public so that nothing / noone can write files or folders here, only to \ftp\users\domain\public\public. I setup the NTFS permissions of the folder to remove domain\users, public and server\users to not have modify right, yet I can still upload / modify files. I have disabled inheritance from the parent folder of \ftp\users\domain\public as well. Any ideas on what I'm missing here? P.S I know this is a stupid setup and makes no sense, it's some bizarre legacy application that I need to migrate to a safer environment until it can be replaced, then I'm going to light it on fire -.- and dance around it.

  • User's home drive permissions don't contain system or administrators on Windows Server 2008 R2

I have a user whose home drive has only that user in the permissions. No administrators, etc. I have tried to take ownership as a local administrator however I cant seem to apply settings to the child objects -- it still gives me a permission denied error. I know there are some handy CLI utils that can redo permissions. Any ideas? Or even a way to do it through Windows? The file server is a 2008 R2 server.

    - by The Devil
I'm having a problem with apache + php 5.3.5 installed on Debian 6. Apache will not honor the permissions of my files. Apache is running under user & group "daemon" and the files are owned by user & group "myUser". For example if myfile.php is with permissions 700 apache will execute it although it shouldn't be doing it. The same configuration works fine under Slackware 13.1. Does anybody know what am I doing wrong?

  • Revert "Deny" permissions in Windows 7

    - by saurabhj
I made a very dumb mistake and I am hoping there is a way to fix this without having to boot in through a Linux Live CD and extracting the data. My user login to my Windows 7 system is: John John is part of the Administrator's group. I have a folder called "C:\Users\John" I tried to make this folder accessible to ONLY John (and deny from all other Administrators) by going to the Folder, Right Click Secturity tab and then selecting all the checkboxes under "Deny" while having selected the "Administrators" group. As a result, I cannot access this folder from any of the accounts: "John" and "Administrator" as both of them belong to the Administrators groupd and deny permissions out-weigh the "Allow Permissions" Is there any way I could revert this back? Thanks a million!

  • Snow Leopard Permissions in Shared Folders reset on saving file

    - by jan
I have several users who access their accounts on OSX through their windows machines over samba. As soon as they update/save a file, it sets the permissions to -rwxr----- which means no other users can read the files. This affects apache user, for example, so changes to their files under their Sites directory means Apache can no longer serve the pages. I've looked into /etc/smb.conf, /var/db/smb.conf, and /var/db/samba/smb.shares but I can't figure out how to force it to use the parent folders permissions. Thanks in advance.

  • Change Drobo directory permissions

    - by Steven Scott
I have a Drobo unit that is connected via fire-wire to a Dell notebook. Using Ubuntu 12.04. I can not seem to change the permissions to allow all users to have read/write access to the drives. The unit is automatically mounting the volumes as my user using the system, so other applications can not access the device. I want to set up a Plex Media Server to stream music, etc... but it will not scan the drives since it can not access them. How can I change the permissions to allow everyone to read the volumes? IF I add them to the fstab as ntfs volumes, Ubuntu reports that they are not available during the boot up, likely due to the fire-wire not having found the drives yet. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Best and Proper Permissions Settings for Directory

    - by Dr. DOT
I am interested in knowing the proper, yet security-conscious settings for a directory. Here's my scenario: I have a username for FTP access to my server called "user". For the purpose of the scenario, PHP runs as "nobody" on my server. I have a directory off the document root called "sample". The "sample" directory is chmod'd at 0755 (drwxr-xr-x) "Sample" is owned by "user" and the group is set to "user" The above is all very straight forward and standard. So I want to have a script be able to create (mkdir) and delete (rmdir) directories under "sample". Yet, I don't want to obviously overly expose my server by opening up the permissions (I could easily chmod sample to 0777 and make it world write-able). What is the best combination of permissions, owner settings and/or group settings to allow my script to create and delete directories under "sample" while retaining the ability for "user" to continue to FTP into the directory? Thanks.

  • Change Read/Write permissions from command line or VB script without cacls

    - by Sam I am
I need a way to automatically change the read/write permissions on a folder, on an Windows XP Embedded machine. The XPE image I'm using doesn't have all of the standard Windows tools, and apparently cacls is one of those tools that it doesn't have. If I simply type cacls into my command window, it tells me 'cacls' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Is there a way for me to change file/folder permissions in Windows XPE without the CACLS command, or is there a way I can download a version of cacls.exe that will run on the XPE machine?

  • OS X Snow Leopard, change file permissions on copy

    - by Francesco K
I work with OS X, Snow Leopard and need to allow users to make copies of files (templates) located in a read-only repository for subsequent editing. The repository is located on a separate physical drive mounted to the OS X boot volume. As this is a shared computer in a school environment, all users access the machine via a single login ("user_local"). Whether using POSIX permissions or ACLs, the use case requires the file permissions to change from "read" to "read write" as they get copied to the "user_local" home directory. Googling around has not yielded anything that would indicate that this is possible via the Snow Leopard permission system. Question 1: Is this in fact possible via the permission system? If so, how? Question 2: If not possible, how would one go about solving this problem? I imagine this to be a fairly common use case so there must be a workable solution for it out there. Thanks.

I am trying to delete JPEG files that were uploaded to the server via FTP. The files are uploaded and written with permissions of 644. The owner and group of the upload directory are mike and mike. I have tried changing the owner and group to www-data, but that does not seem to work. I am trying to delete the files with a PHP script using unlink(). This works on the production server (which is a hosting service), but not my development server, which is a LAMP setup. This leads me to believe it has something to do with permissions on my development server.

  • File ownership and permissions on web site PHP files

    - by columbo
Hello, I am learning the basics of linux servers so I am green. I have an Ubuntu server upon which there are websites that I have inherited. In a fit of security worry I decided to check out the ownership of the web site files. They are all 2016:sites. If I run the command 'cat /etc/group | more' I can see that the group exists. But when I run 'lastlog' the user 2016 does not appear. I started to worry that 2016 might be the username of web users connecting from the web so I set the permissions on a testfile to chmod 600, giving read permissions to only the file owner. Sure enough I could still access the file from the web. Can anyone suggest what is going on here? I tried creating a new user and giving them file ownership but then when I access the file from the web it wants me to have all directories up stream owned by the same person. Thanks
