  • WiX 3 Tutorial: Custom EULA License and MSI localization

    In this part of the ongoing Wix tutorial series we’ll take a look at how to localize your MSI into different languages. We’re still the mighty SuperForm: Program that takes care of all your label color needs. :) Localizing the MSI With WiX 3.0 localizing an MSI is pretty much a simple and straightforward process. First let look at the WiX project Properties->Build. There you can see "Cultures to build" textbox. Put specific cultures to build into the testbox or leave it empty to build all of them. Cultures have to be in correct culture format like en-US, en-GB or de-DE. Next we have to tell WiX which cultures we actually have in our project. Take a look at the first post in the series about Solution/Project structure and look at the Lang directory in the project structure picture. There we have de-de and en-us subfolders each with its own localized stuff. In the subfolders pay attention to the WXL files Loc_de-de.wxl and Loc_en-us.wxl. Each one has a <String Id="LANG"> under the WixLocalization root node. By including the string with id LANG we tell WiX we want that culture built. For English we have <String Id="LANG">1033</String>, for German <String Id="LANG">1031</String> in Loc_de-de.wxl and for French we’d have to create another file Loc_fr-FR.wxl and put <String Id="LANG">1036</String>. WXL files are localization files. Any string we want to localize we have to put in there. To reference it we use loc keyword like this: !(loc.IdOfTheVariable) => !(loc.MustCloseSuperForm) This is our Loc_en-us.wxl. Please call user support.</String> </WixLocalization>   As you can see from the file we can use localization variables in other variables like we do for SuperFormNewerVersionInstalled string. ProductKeyCheckDialog* strings are to localize a custom dialog for Product key check which we’ll look at in the next post. Built in dialog text localization Under the de-de folder there’s also the WixUI_de-de.wxl file. This files contains German translations of all texts that are in WiX built in dialogs. It can be downloaded from WiX 3.0.5419.0 Source Forge site. Download the wix3-sources.zip and go to \src\ext\UIExtension\wixlib. There you’ll find already translated all WiX texts in 12 Languages. Localizing the custom EULA license Here it gets ugly. We can override the default EULA license easily by overriding WixUILicenseRtf WiX variable like this: <WixVariable Id="WixUILicenseRtf" Value="License.rtf" /> where License.rtf is the name of your custom EULA license file. The downside of this method is that you can only have one license file which means no localization for it. That’s why we need to make a workaround. License is checked on a dialog name LicenseAgreementDialog. What we have to do is overwrite that dialog and insert the functionality for localization. This is a code for LicenseAgreementDialogOverwritten.wxs, an overwritten LicenseAgreementDialog that supports localization. We’ve changed the original license text source to "$(var.ProjectDir)\!(loc.LicenseRtf)". var.ProjectDir is the directory of the project file. The !(loc.LicenseRtf) is where the magic happens. Scroll up and take a look at the wxl localization file example. We have the LicenseRtf declared there and it’s been made overridable so developers can change it if they want. The value of the LicenseRtf is the path to our localized EULA relative to the WiX project directory. With little hacking we’ve achieved a fully localizable installer package.   The final step is to insert the extended LicenseAgreementDialogOverwritten license dialog into the installer GUI chain.   • More localized, efficient Lowest Common Ancestor algorithm given multiple binary trees?

    I have multiple binary trees stored as an array. In each slot is either nil (or null; pick your language) or a fixed tuple storing two numbers: the indices of the two "children". No node will have only one child -- it's either none or two. Think of each slot as a binary node that only stores pointers to its children, and no inherent value. Take this system of binary trees: 0 1 / \ / \ 2 3 4 5 / \ / \ 6 7 8 9 / \ 10 11 The associated array would be: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 [ [2,3] , [4,5] , [6,7] , nil , nil , [8,9] , nil , [10,11] , nil , nil , nil , nil ] I've already written simple functions to find direct parents of nodes (simply by searching from the front until there is a node that contains the child) Furthermore, let us say that at relevant times, both all trees are anywhere between a few to a few thousand levels deep. I'd like to find a function P(m,n) to find the lowest common ancestor of m and n -- to put more formally, the LCA is defined as the "lowest", or deepest node in which have m and n as descendants (children, or children of children, etc.). If there is none, a nil would be a valid return. Some examples, given our given tree: P( 6,11) # => 2 P( 3,10) # => 0 P( 8, 6) # => nil P( 2,11) # => 2 The main method I've been able to find is one that uses an Euler trace, which turns the given tree, with a node A to be the invisible parent of 0 and 1 with a depth of -1, into: A-0-2-6-2-7-10-7-11-7-2-0-3-0-A-1-4-1-5-8-5-9-5-1-A And from that, simply find the node between your given m and n that has the lowest number; For example, to find P(6,11), look for a 6 and an 11 on the trace. The number between them that is the lowest is 2, and that's your answer. If A is in between them, return nil. -- Calculating P(6,11) -- A-0-2-6-2-7-10-7-11-7-2-0-3-0-A-1-4-1-5-8-5-9-5-1-A ^ ^ ^ | | | m lowest n Unfortunately, I do believe that finding the Euler trace of a tree that can be several thousands of levels deep is a bit machine-taxing...and because my tree is constantly being changed throughout the course of the programming, every time I wanted to find the LCA, I'd have to re-calculate the Euler trace and hold it in memory every time. Is there a more memory efficient way, given the framework I'm using? One that maybe iterates upwards? One way I could think of would be the "count" the generation/depth of both nodes, and climb the lowest node until it matched the depth of the highest, and increment both until they find someone similar. But that'd involve climbing up from level, say, 3025, back to 0, twice, to count the generation, and using a terribly inefficient climbing-up algorithm in the first place, and then re-climbing back up. Are there any other better ways?

  • How to prevent Debug.Assert(...) to show a modal dialog

    I have a couple of libraries which use Debug.Assert(...). I think that the Debug.Assert(...) are fine and I still want them to execute, but I don't want them to block the execution of my application. Ideally, I would only like them to be logged somewhere. Given that I can't change the code of the libraries (and that I still want to compile in debug and run the assertion), how do I prevent Debug.Assert(...) to show a modal dialog? Thanks!

  • AnkhSVN - How to remove old URLs from list of URLs in the "Open from Subversion" dialog box

    I work for a small company and am the sole developer using AnkhSVN to version my code. For the server side I am using VisualSVN v2.5.8. The server is installed on my own machine (on a different drive). I have a few repositories that I created about two years ago that have been working fine. We recently completed an Active Directory Domain Rename (that's another story) so the FQDN of my machine changed so the domain portion is no longer the same as what it was when the server portion was installed. I managed to get AnkhSVN to connect to the repositories so everything is working again but the URL list that comes up on the "Open from Subversion" dialog box still has all the old URLs. How can I remove them? I've searched everywhere I can think of looking for this list but can't seem to find it anywhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Chuck R.

  • Is it a bad idea to have a login dialog inside an iframe?

    We're creating a website where we will be giving out code snippets to our users which they can place on their own websites. These snippets contain a link a javascript include. When clicking the link, an iframe containing the login dialog to our site opens. The user then authenticates inside the iframe, does his work and when he leaves the iframe his session is closed. We've got it working allready and it's very slick. Our main concern though is phishing. The user has absolutely now way of veryifying where the login page is really coming from. On the other hand, phising attacks are also succesfull even if the user can see the fake-url in the address bar. Would you enter your (OpenId) credentials in an iframe? Does anyone know a pattern with which we could minimise the chances of a phishing attack?

  • 'An error occurred. Please try later' message on Facebook authentication dialog

    I am a newbie who is trying to create a Facebook app using PHP and Facebook's PHP SDK. The app is hosted on Heroku, and the sample app that they provided is working fine. However, I am now trying to get the sample app to work on Apache 2.2, and I have encountered a lot of problems along the way. Well, straight to the point, my latest problem will be trying to do Facebook login on localhost, but the 'An error occurred. Please try later' appears on the popup dialog. This does not happen on Heroku. Will someone please enlighten me on if there's any steps that I can take to overcome this error? I don't think it got to do with any coding error since I am just following the provided sample app. Thanks!

  • Versioning Strategy for Service Interfaces JAR

    I'm building a service oriented architecture composed (mostly) of Java-based services, each of which is a Maven project (in an individual repository) with two submodules: common, and server. The common module contains the service's interfaces that clients can include in their project to make service calls. The server submodule contains the code that actually powers the service. I'm now trying to figure out an appropriate versioning strategy for the interfaces, such that each interface change results in a new common jar, but changes to the server (so long as they don't impact the contract of the interfaces) receive the same common jar. I know this is pretty simple to do manually (simply increment the server version and don't touch the common one), but this project will be built and deployed by a CI server, and I'd like to come up with a strategy for automatically versioning these. The only thing I have been able to come up with so far is to have the CI server md5 the service interfaces.

    I had need of showing open file dialog in winform application. And one property of the file dialog, autoupgradeenabled which I set as a true, which is for updating the open file dialog according to operating system, like if application is running on xp then dialog is displayed different as in wista or window 7. So when I used that property as a true, and once in the machine where there was xp with 2.0 .net framework that open file dialog could not be opened. So I tried by doing it false then also it could not be opened in the machine with the xp and 2.0 framework. Then I tried by commenting that whole line means I removed that property from the code, then I tried and it was fine in xp machine with 2.0 framework. So problem is I cannot understand that why that property is not working by setting it false or true. Because by setting that property is should work in all os with all framework and dialog should be changed according to os. If not,then what is the meaning of that property ?

(It was Microsoft.XNA.Framework v2.0 obtained from the XNA 2.0 redistributalbe and as far as I could see it installed only into the GAC). I worked round the problem by setting the reference to Microsoft.XNA.Framework manually in the .csproj file and then getting a copy of the dll out of the cache. I was then able to create a directory for the DLL, add it to Visual Studio's list of assembly directories in the registry and then voila! I could see it in the .NET tab. This all seems like a bit of a faff to me and I don't think that my initial assumption (that the .NET tab shows the contents of the GAC) was that unreasonable or would be that uncommon. Can someone who knows more than me tell me why the contents of the GAC aren't shown? The documentation just says that they are not, but is there a good reason? is there actually a way to get the entire contents of the GAC to be listed? A tick box I've missed somewhere? Any info much appreciated.

  • WINDOWS: Your computer hangs. You can windows + R (run dialog) but performance is so halted taskMGR

    The question is, what process are available to try to recover from total system instability before pulling the plug when we can do nothing but programs or batches in the path from the run dialog (windows + r key), and performance is so dead that taskMGR / procEXP / other programs with visual guis are not usable? I am not a windows expert, but ideally someone out there has written a program that does more or less stuff like this: Immediately set (or perhaps I can set from the run prompt) its priority to extremely high, evaluate performance bottlenecks. E.g. is CPU 100%? If so identify offending program(s) or problems. Attempt / log fixes, then provide crude feedback asking the user if his performance has stabilized enough to abort, wait a few seconds, if no feedback continue, etc. etc. Eventually try to do any "system cleanup" if the program decides it cannot recover and perhaps finally provide a series of beeps to the user, or what have you, to say "OK, I give up, time to pull the plug". Ideally create a log, when able. These kinds of horrible hangs are a situation where surely trying something, anything, is better than nothing -- as long as that something is intelligent -- when the alternative is ripping out the power coord. Again, I am not a windows expert, so perhaps there is a much more elegant "hands on" approach I am not aware of.

    A user was working from home and had a colleague turn on her computer so she could remote desktop to it. All worked fine, but when she came into the office and used her computer for a while then locked it the computer icon had a red screen, instead of blue. Like in the following mockup: Mockup of red computer screen. It didn't cause any problems and it went away when she rebooted, but I was intrigued to find out whether there was something that caused it or if it was just a windows oddity. I believe she just closed the remote desktop session (without really logging off) from home and then disconnected from the VPN before coming to the office. Any ideas?

  • How can I cause Task Scheduler to "fail" if a dialog box returns a certain result?

    I'm working on a VBScript to do a weekly reboot of all machines on our network. I want to run this script via Task Scheduler. The script runs at 3:00 AM, but there is a small chance that users may still be on the network at that time, and I need to give them the option to terminate the reboot. If they do so, I would like the reboot to occur the next night at 3:00 AM. I've set Task Scheduler up to repeat in this way. So far, so good. The problem is that if the user selects "Cancel" in my script, the Task Scheduler does not see my task as failed, and won't run it again the next night. Any ideas? Can I pass an errorcode to task scheduler or otherwise abort the task via VBScript?
