• How to restrict text search to a certain subset of the database ?

  I have a large central database of around 1 million heavy records. In my app, for every user I would have a subset of rows from central table, which would be very small (probably 100 records each).When a particular user has logged in , I would want to search on this data set only. Example: Say I have a central database of all cars in the world. I have a user profile for General Motors(GM) , Ferrari etc. When GM is logged in I just want to search(a full text search and not fire a sql query) for those cars which are manufactured by GM. Also GM may launch/withdraw a model in which case central db would be updated & so would be rowset associated with GM. In case of acquisitions, db of certain profiles may change without launch/removal of new car. So central db wont change then , but rowsets may. Whats the best way to implement such a design ? These smaller row sets would need to be dynamic depending on user activities. We are on Rails 2.3.5 and use thinking_sphinx as the connector and Sphinx/MySQL for search and relational associations.

• Possible to rank partial matches in Postgres full text search?

  I'm trying to calculate a ts_rank for a full-text match where some of the terms in the query may not be in the ts_vector against which it is being matched. I would like the rank to be higher in a match where more words match. Seems pretty simple? Because not all of the terms have to match, I have to | the operands, to give a query such as to_tsquery('one|two|three') (if it was &, all would have to match). The problem is, the rank value seems to be the same no matter how many words match. In other words, it's maxing rather than multiplying the clauses. select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one')); gives 0.0607927. select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one|two|three|four')); gives the expected lower value of 0.0455945 because 'four' is not the vector. But select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one|two')); gives 0.0607927 and likewise select ts_rank('one two three'::tsvector, to_tsquery('one|two|three')); gives 0.0607927 I would like the result of ts_rank to be higher if more terms match. Possible? To counter one possible response: I cannot calculate all possible subsequences of the search query as intersections and then union them all in a query because I am going to be working with large queries. I'm sure there are plenty of arguments against this anyway! Edit: I'm aware of ts_rank_cd but it does not solve the above problem.

  Here is another small but very useful new feature in Oracle Database 12c - SQL Text Expansion.  It will come in handy in two cases:You are asked to tune what looks like a simple query - maybe a two table join with simple predicates.  But it turns out the two tables are each views of views of views and so on... In other words, you've been asked to 'tune' a 15 page query, not a two liner.You are asked to take a look at a query against tables with VPD (virtual private database) policies.  In order words, you have no idea what you are trying to 'tune'.A new function, EXPAND_SQL_TEXT, in the DBMS_UTILITY package makes seeing what the "real" SQL is quite easy. • sIFR displays only the first line of text in Opera when on transparent background

  I have implemented sIFR for the first time, on a test page. The code I have is below. It works fine in IE7, Firefox, Safari and Chrome, but in Opera only the first line of sIFR-ed text appears when the page first loads and after refreshing the page. But, if I scroll the page, all the text appears! It seems to have to do with transparency, because if I turn transparency off, it works fine. Please can someone help me to make this work?   Hi guys, I need a regular expression to parse a body of text. Basically assume this that we have text files and each of which contains random text but within the text there would be lines in the following formats - basically they are a format for denoting flight legs. eg: 13FEB2009 BDR7402 1000 UUBB 1020 UUWW FLT This line of text is always on one line The first word is a date in the format DDMMMYYYY Second word could be of any length and hold alphanumeric characters third word is the time in format HHMM - its always numeric fourth word is a location code - its almost always just alphabets but could also be alphanumeric fifth word is the arrival time in format HHMM - its always numeric sixth word is a location code - its almost always just alphabets but could also be alphanumeric Any words which follow on the same line are just definitions A text file may contain among lots of random text information one or more such lines of text. I need a way to be able to extract all this information i.e just these lines within a text file and store them with their integral parts separated as mentioned in an associative array so I have something like this: array('0'=>array('date'=>'', 'time-dept'=>'', 'flightcode'=>'',....)) I'm assuming regular expressions would be in order here. I'm using php for this - would appreciate the help guys :)

• Getting the highlighted text inside selected element only.

  My goal is to be able to get the highlighted text within a document, but only if that text is within a given section, and then apply a certain style to that selected text after clicking a div tag. I'll explain what I mean: So, having looked at window.getSelection() and document.selection.createRange().text, I attempted to use elmnt.getSelection() or elmnt.selection.createRange().text for some HTML element, elmnt. However, it doesn't seem to work, so that idea seems pretty null. This means I can't use this idea to determine the text that is highlighted within a given location. In case this doesn't make sense, essentially, I want html code that looks like this: <body> <div id="content">Stuff here will not be effected</div> <div id="highlightable">Stuff here can be effected when highlighted</div> <div id="morecontent">Stuff here will also not be effected</div> </body> So that whenever I've highlighted text, clicking on a specified div will apply the proper CSS. Now, on to the div tags. Basically, here's what I've got on that: $('.colorpicker').click( function(e) { console.log(getSelectedText()); } Eventually, all I want this to highlight the selected text and have the div tag change the color of the selected text to that of the respective div tag that I've selected. Neither of these seems to be working right now, and my only guess for the reason of the div tag is that it unhighlights whatever I've got selected whenever I click on the div tag. Fallbacks: If there is more than one time that 'abc' is found on the page and I highlight to color 'abc', I would like that only that copy of 'abc' be highlighted. I know this is a lot in one question, but even if I could get a little head start on this idea, my next personal project would be going a lot more smoothly. Thanks. :)

  I'm trying to bind a Textbox.Text to Form.Text (which sets the title of the form). The binding itself works. But, the title isn't updated until I move the entire form. How can I achieve Form.Text being updated without moving the form? I'd like Form.Text being updated directly when I type something in the Textbox. I downloaded the alternate CD and went through the installation, but never got an "Install a command-line system." option. 12.04 is now up and running, though i don't need the desktop GUI. • High traffic chat - how to check if there is new message and show it for all users

  I already had question about this but obviously it was not accepted very well, apparently too long when it's actually more information so you could have given me better answer. Ok, I will be much clearer now. Best possible logic to develop scalable chat in terms of stability, storing/reading messages on chat, updating chat on new message for all users etc.? I have most of this developed, the logic I think I miss is -- check if there is new message and show it for all users. I have this implemented but it crashes the site due to its traffic of 300k-400k people, so that's my main question. The chat is PHP based and uses Pusher (www.pusher.com) for instant messaging but it lacks what I need because it's more like a websocket. I'm using hardcoded files to keep messages (want to avoid database as much as possible). It's a no extension type of file, I'm sure you know. I'm getting crash with $fp = fopen(..., "w"); // pretend ... is the path and filename fwrite($fp, $msg); //hardcode the message fclose($fp); where $msg is the message itself. I'm having 1 file per message. I show last 150 messages = 150 file accesses and reads, yeah it's too much I guess. I have better logic now which I'm pursuing and that is 1 file with last 50-100 messages at all time. Sure it should be much better. How does it crash, that's the trickiest part because everything seems ordinary, believe me it is difficult to determine what exactly crashes the site, but in like 5 minutes when I try to open the site it's gone, then I put the old content without chat and is back online again. I'm having jquery post every 1 second to check if there is new message. I'm using timestamp in a special file where I keep the time last message was sent and if ((time() - time in file) <= 2) = reload last 150 messages including the last one. Too much input/output, write/read or however to say it I think is what crashes the site.

• Acronis Disk Director AFTER Clone Disk error: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

  Used Acronis Disk Director on my desktop, plugged in the laptop drive 240GB SSD (USB) and the new hard drive 500GB SSD (usb) and the copy seemed to be fine. I didnt see any error messages but I didnt stare at it for 3 hours either. The clone disk of course the Toshiba hidden restore partition, the primary partition C drive and the active (boot?) partition and yes, did check box for copy NT signature. The computer boots up fine most of the time, but it seems that when the computer goes to sleep (i believe its sleep, hard to do much testing during school) or hibernate or reboot it will sometimes display this message: Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.52 Copyright (C) 1997-2010, Intel Corporation PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready... Of course any key does nothing but repeat a similar method. However, if I press the power button on the laptop (Toshiba Portege R705, Win 7 Pro 64-bit) it puts computer into hibernate. After hibernating I press power button again and it comes out of hibernation without any odd messages or problems described above... so apparently that is my TEMP fix. Another recent issue I noticed is on occasion when creating a new folder or modifying something in the system variables, other random areas I will get a message: "The Stub received bad data" and simply retry the task and it works. Perhaps these two issues are linked.

• What options do I have for creating customized keyboard shortcuts?

  As I am getting more heavily into programming as a job and no longer as a hobby, I am definitely in need of some ways to improve my productivity. One thing that would definitely help in that respect is being able to create customized keyboard shortcuts for text/code snippets. For instance, holding down CMD+L+O+R+E+M will output a paragraph or two of the Lorem ipsum filler text, or CMD+F+U creates a function declaration. What I am ideally looking for is a database where I can store formatted text snippets, bind them to my choice of keystrokes, and then have the text paste whenever I perform the associated keystrokes. Are there any stand-alone applications that can do this for a Mac. Also, are there any text editors / IDEs that have this ability built in?

  I find that sometimes I write a really long ex mode command that do lots of stuff. They are sort of "mini-scripts" that I write in the text editor then I start ex mode and copy them into the ex line and execute. But then I always end up editing in the ex mode and then I find it difficult to get the changes i did in ex mode back to my text editing session. Using the keyboard, how do you copy the last ex command you used and paste it into your text editor? (Note: This is sort of the opposite of this question "how do I copy/paste in vim ex mode" where the user asks "how do you copy from the text editor and paste INTO the ex mode?". My question is the opposite because I wish to copy from the ex mode and paste into my text editor.)

• What changed between Excel 2007 and 2010 that is causing my copied worksheet save to fail?

  When I do this in Excel 2010 this fails, but works in Excel 2007: Create a new workbook and insert an image onto a worksheet, or get a preexisting worksheet with an image. Copy the worksheet into a new workbook by clicking the worksheet tab and clicking Move Or Copy and then choosing (new workbook) as the destination. Close the source workbook. Attempt to save the new workbook. The message is: "Errors were detected while saving 'myfilepathhere.xlsx'. Microsoft Excel may be able to save the file b removing or repairing some features. To make the repairs in a new file, click Continue. To cancel saving the file, click Cancel". Clicking continue brings up another file dialog window followed by more repair errors. It seems behind the scenes it is looking to the source workbook when it tries to save the image in the new destination workbook. No useful error message, of course, thanks microsoft. But this problem never happened in Excel 2007. The reason why I am closing the source notebook before the save, is because I don't need the end user to see it after I programmatically pull a coversheet (with the image) from it, in an interop app. Thanks for any help. Update: I don't encounter this problem if I open the source workbook as "Read Only" (I do this programmatically using Excel Interop).

• How to prevent Excel rounding numbers or adding redundant 0's?

  I have a column of numbers that appear like this: but the actual value of the shown cell is 20130.153334 Other values have a different number of decimal places. I don't want to add redundant 0's, so I can't just specify a particular number of decimal places to display. I really just want to treat the values as text. I have already changed the format of the cell to Text, as the description for Text is: "Text format cells are treated as text even when a number is in the cell. The cell is displayed exactly as entered.". However, it clearly isn't being displayed exactly as entered! Strangely, if I hit F2 on the cell to go into edit mode, then hit enter, it is then displayed correctly. I can't do this manually for 2000+ records though! How can I prevent the numbers being rounded?

• Image auto resizes in PdfPCell with iTextSharp

  Hi, i'm having a weird problem with images in iTextSharp library. I'm adding the image to the PdfPCell and for some reason it gets scaled up. How do i keep it to original size? Here's the image of the PDF at 100% and the image in its original size opened in paint.net. I though that the images would be same when printed but the difference on the pic is the same on the printed version. Having to manually scale the image with ScaleXXX to get it to right seems a bit illogical and does not give a good result. So how do I put the image in its original size inside a PdfPCell of a table without having to scale it?
