• Make service indepented from activity (Android).

  I have an activity with two buttons, start and stop. If the user press the start button a service is created using Context.startService. And the stop button calls Context.stopService. I want the stop button to be the only way to destroy the service. Now, if i end the activity using a task manager, the service is killed as well. Is there any way to avoid this?

  I have 2 Auto Complete Views which i have to pre-populate with some text .However as soon as user clicks on the views , the text should disappear and allow user to enter text . I have written two separate on click listeners to do so . The On click listener for the first one is working fine . However i have to double click for the On click listener of the second one to work. • Creation of AsyncTask taking too much time Android

  I am making a network call in an AsyncTask, but the problem i am facing is the amount of time it is taking to start the doInBackground method. Here is a part of my code: button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { Log.d("Temp:",System.currentTimeMillis()+""); new Move().execute(); /*some other logic } } And my AsyncTask is: private class Move extends AsyncTask<Void, Void, Void> { @Override protected Void doInBackground(Void... temp) { Log.d("start:",System.currentTimeMillis()+""); gson.fromJson(Web.Request.get(some_URL),Void.class); Log.d("end:",System.currentTimeMillis()+""); return null; } } These are the logs i got: 32658-998/com.example.game D/temp:? 1408923006159 32658-998/com.example.game D/start:? 1408923035163 32658-998/com.example.game D/end:? 1408923035199 So actually it took almost 29 secs to reach the first line in doInBackground method, where as it took just 36 ms to finish the network call. I tried it many times, the time taken is almost in the same order. Is it possible to start the AsyncTask immediately? Or is there any other way to solve this problem.(other than a running a simple thread?) Thank you :)

  I have a service which does its work(perform network operation) depending upon the type of message(message.what) property of the message. Then it returns the resoponse, also as a message to the requesting component(depending upon the message.replyTo). So, i am trying to write the testcases.. But how????? My Architecture of service is like this: 1) A component(ex. Activity) bounds to the service. 2) The component sends message to the Service(using Messenger). 3) The service has a nested class that handles the messages and execute the network call and returns a response as message to the sender(who initially sent the message and using its replyTo property). Now to test this.. i am using Junit test cases.. So , in that .. 1) in setUp() i am binding to the service.. 2) on testBusinessLogic() . i am sending the message to the service .. Now problem is where to get the response message.

• Sync Local ICS File with Android via Exchange/Outlook

  At my company we have a 3rd party app which tracks off-hours duty for all of our engineers. The app is not web-enabled and we cannot make any changes to it. It does write a simple text file and I have created an app that translates that to an ICS file. My goal is to have that appear on my calendar on my Android phone. Here is the path I am working on: DutyApp -- TextFile -- ICSFile -- Outlook(exchange) -- Android (via exchange sync) My problems: If I place the ICS file on our FILE server and then in Outlook if I go to the option CalendarOpen CalendarFrom Internet it shows up in Outlook and looks pretty good. After a couple minutes it shows up on my Android phone as well. If I change the original ICS file those changes never display in Outlook and never sync to my Android phone. This seems to be a one shot deal almost like an import. Now if I place the ICS file on our WEB server and then in Outlook if I go to the option CalendarOpen CalendarFrom Internet and use webcal:\ as the address, it shows up in Outlook and also looks pretty good. Any changes I make to the original ICS file display in Outlook. However the entire calendar never shows up in Android. This calendar is a subscription and it seems, although am not sure, that Android doesn't display Exchange subscription calendars. Yes I know it works with Gmail subscription calendars but this is Exchange. So my question is what other options are there? We are behind a firewall so cant link the ICS file to a Gmail account. I can't put the ICS file anywhere else other than our file or web server.

  I'm looking forward to Task/ToDo Manager. It should work under Android, Linux(or Web). If it's very cool, one of them is OK too, Android is preferable in this situation. Necessary features: Russian or English language Possibility to mark task as finished Interesting features: (I want as more, as possible, while it's OK, if some of them isn't avaliable) Nice and easy-to-use interface Possibility to choose finish time for task. After that it's showed as overdue. Possibility to choose start time for task. Before it task is inactive and maybe shown or hide Possibility to add nested tasks. Task marks completed when all sub-tasks are completed. Possibility to make dependencies. If A depends on B, and B isn't finished yet, A is inactive as in third feature. Possibility to create task in a moment without fill-all-this-forms Syncronization between version(Android to linux or Android to web) Notification (on Android only) Features, that I'm not interested in: Creating more than one todo list sharing ToDo's I've seen couple of managers. Best I've seen now is Task Coach for Linux, but I don't very like its interface, and there is no version for Android.

• What difference with Android when iOS is not open?

  My question may seem silly, but, I've read in many Android books that the better part of Android is Android is open, and iOS is closed. But, from a programmer viewpoint, who cares about this point? Programmers just care about the platform: is it easy to program in, easy to have help in the network, etc. They don't care about whether the platform is open or closed. One book had additional information, but I don't understand it much. Since iOS is not open, I’d be able to share my work with others only if Apple allowed it. So, if you write an app, and need to share, you must have Apple's permission, but not Android's? Please help me understand this point. I'm preparing for a presentation on Android. And I don't know if I should put this point into my presentation.

• Network doesn't work after installing Ubuntu 10.10. Is this a hardware failure?

  Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my dev box, making a dual boot with Windows XP. Before installation, everything worked fine, but now Windows XP cannot connect to the network saying that cable is not connected. I tried connecting it to different devices, and it always fails. Under Ubuntu I observe the same issue, but occasionally, usually it works and sometimes it can't find the network. Do you people think it's Ubuntu related, or is my network card broken?

• Is it necessary to understand what's happening at the hardware level to be a good programmer?

  I'm a self-taught programmer, just in case this question is answered in CS 101. I've learned and used lots of languages, mostly for my own personal use, but occasionally for professional stuff. It seems that I'm always running into the same wall when I run into trouble programming. For example, I just asked a question on another forum about how to handle a pointer-to-array that was returned by a function. Initially I'm thinking that I simply don't know the proper technique that the designers of C++ set up to handle the situation. But from the answers and discussions that follow I see that I don't really get what happens when something is 'returned'. How deep a level of understanding of the programming process must a good programmer achieve?

  When reading the specifications for the LSi SAS 9206-16e HBA, it says Storage Connectivity; Data Transfer Rates * 16 ports; 6Gb/s SAS 2.1 compliant SAS Bandwidth * Half Duplex 2400MB/s, x4, 6Gb/s SAS lanes Port Configurations * 16 ea, x1 ports (individual drives) * 4 ea, x4 wide ports * 2ea, x8 wide ports Connectors * Four (x4) mini-SAS HD external connectors (SFF8644) So there are 4 physical connectors. Question What is the bandwidth for each of the connectors? I would be temped to say 6Gb/s * 4, but then it mentions the "Port Configurations" and 2ea, 4ea, 16ea, which I don't understand what is. Does this mean, that the 4 physical connectors are not identical?

  I have dead HP DL 380G4 with RAID 1+0 with 1 logical volume from 4x72GB drives on built-in Smart Array 6i 128Mb BBWC. It was shut down properly. It seems it was usual death for Proliant with ILO led 2,3,8 lighting. I want to move array to another identical server with same raid firmware level. What is the best strategy?: I have RAID 1+0 on bay 0 bay 1 bay 2 bay 3 As I understand bay0+bay1 are in RAID 1 , bay2+bay3 are in RAID 1, and both RAID 1 pairs are in RAID 0. So should I : Clear RAID config on new server, insert bay 0, bay 2 and power-on or Create RAID 1+0 with 1 logical volume from clear HDDs , and then poweroff ,remove HDDs and insert 2 HDDs(bay 0, bay 2) from old RAID 1+0. then power-on. (each hdd has its raid position info stored but may be could work on same config) According to documentation for Smart Array 6i it could be possible to migrate. however one requirement point is unclear for me Before you move drives, the following conditions must be met: • The array is in its original configuration. " What is orginal and non-original config for RAID 1+0? Another point "If you want to move an array to another controller, you must also consider the following additional limitations: • All drives in the array must be moved at the same time." I want to move one hdd from each RAID 1 pair. to have mirrors untouched just in case. Do they mean to move all 4 simultaniously? Smart Array 6i User Guide: Moving Drives and Arrays You can move drives to other ID positionson the same array controller. You can also move a complete arrayfrom one controller to another, even if the controllers are on different servers. Before you move drives, the following conditions must be met: • If moving thedrives to a different server, the new server must have enough empty bays to accommodate all the drives simultaneously. • The move will not result in more than 14 physical drives per controller channel. • No controller will be configured with more than 32 logical volumes. • The array has no failed or missing drives. • The array is in its original configuration. • The controller is not reading from or writing to any of the spare drives in the array. • The controller is not running capacity expansion, capacity extension, or RAID or stripe size migration. • The controller is using the latestfirmware version (recommended). If you want to move an array to another controller, you must also consider the following additional limitations: • All drives in the array must be moved at the same time. • In most cases, a moved array (and the logical drives that it contains) can still undergo arraycapacity expansion, logical drive capacity extension, or migration of RAID level orstripe size. When all the conditions have been met: Back up all data before removing any drives or changing configuration. This step is requiredif you are moving data-containing drives from a controller that does not have a battery-backed cache. Power down the system. If you are moving an array from a controller that contains a RAID ADG logical volume to a controller that does not support RAID ADG: Move the drives. Power up the system. If a 1724 POST message is displayed, drive positions were changed successfully and the configuration was updated. If a 1785 (NotConfigured)POST message is displayed: a. Power down the system immediately to prevent data loss. b. Return the drives to their original locations. c. Restore the data from backup, if necessary. • External USB HD with -optional- mains?

  Hi, I'm Christmas-present-buying, and I'd appreciate recommendations for a USB HD with an optional mains power input. I've hunted, but can't find all the information I want (partially due to sketchy product specifications). Background: This is for a digital TV which I do not own, and so I'd like to get it correct first time. The TV has a USB port to allow recording straight to disk, but the manuals don't say how much power can be drawn through the USB port. The manual's instructions state, possibly generically, to plug the drive in before connecting to the TV. Ideally I'd like a small (2.5"?) drive which can draw power over USB, with an mains power input if it turns out the USB port on the TV doesn't offer enough juice. The ideal is to use one cable, two max. A powered USB hub would introduce too much clutter. I've spotted that the LaCie Petit drives have what appears to be an additional power input, but I'm not even sure from the specs what that is. And the device doesn't ship with a mains adapter. Suggestions?

• PC freezes after repeated clicking noises

  I have an oldish PC (Athlon XP 2200, WinXP). Every time I switch it on, I hear a loud "click" first of all, and when it is shut down, again a click is the last sound I hear. Lately it started to behave erratically: it started to click loudly in the middle of a session. First only once in a while, then repeatedly for several seconds in a row, and finally it froze completely. We were not doing anything particular during these times, usually just browsing the web. This has already happened twice in a few week's time period. We typically use it only in the evenings, so when the freeze happened, I just decided it is time for the bed. When it was started up the next day, everything looked fine. Any hints on what could be the culprit? Could it be caused by an ageing heat fan, or dust that has accumulated inside the case? We are backing up all the data stored on it, and then will open the case to look inside, but I thought it would be good to get some background info first of all.

• Second video card (PCI) under Windows 7

  I'm trying to get an old PCI video card (Diamond Stealth 2500) along with a normal PCI-E video card. In BIOS, there is a setting to switch between PEG/PCI or PCI/PEG on startup (PEG is PCI-E Graphics). When I use PCI/PEG only the old PCI card works, when I use the other one, only the new PEG card works. In PEG/PCI mode, Windows 7 recognizes the card and shows it in Device Manager as Standard VGA adapter, but it shows a warning for the device ("This device cannot start. (Code 10)").
