• Using a random string to authenticate HMAC?

  I am designing a simple webservice and want to use HMAC for authentication to the service. For the purpose of this question we have: a web service at example.com a secret key shared between a user and the server [K] a consumer ID which is known to the user and the server (but is not necessarily secret) [D] a message which we wish to send to the server [M] The standard HMAC implementation would involve using the secret key [K] and the message [M] to create the hash [H], but I am running into issues with this. The message [M] can be quite long and tends to be read from a file. I have found its very difficult to produce a correct hash consistently across multiple operating systems and programming languages because of hidden characters which make it into various file formats. This is of course bad implementation on the client side (100%), but I would like this webservice to be easily accessible and not have trouble with different file formats. I was thinking of an alternative, which would allow the use a short (5-10 char) random string [R] rather than the message for autentication, e.g. H = HMAC(K,R) The user then passes the random string to the server and the server checks the HMAC server side (using random string + shared secret). As far as I can see, this produces the following issues: There is no message integrity - this is ok message integrity is not important for this service A user could re-use the hash with a different message - I can see 2 ways around this Combine the random string with a timestamp so the hash is only valid for a set period of time Only allow each random string to be used once Since the client is in control of the random string, it is easier to look for collisions I should point out that the principle reason for authentication is to implement rate limiting on the API service. There is zero need for message integrity, and its not a big deal if someone can forge a single request (but it is if they can forge a very large number very quickly). I know that the correct answer is to make sure the message [M] is the same on all platforms/languages before hashing it. But, taking that out of the equation, is the above proposal an acceptable 2nd best?

• How do you pass a date value to BIRT report via querystring

  Hi, I have made a static html page (called start.jsp) containing a form where the user select 2 date ranges and this form has date pickers for those text boxes. When the user submits the form, it should take them to the BIRT report that I have designed. It SHOULD pass the 2 parameters that my report needs (start date and end date). Here is the querystring that gets appended to the URL birt-viewer/run__report=Business_Activity_Monitoring.rptdesign &FilterStartDate=2000-01-01&FilterEndDate=2009-01-01 I get an invalid date error: org.eclipse.birt.report.exception.ViewerValidationException: The parameter "FilterStartDate" is invalid. The value "06-08-2010" is invalid with the type "dateTime". How is it that if I remove the querystring completely, then BIRT will prompt me to enter the start date and end date (screenshot attached). I enter the exact same data that the form tries to send and it works!? This proves that my date string is correctly formatted but yet it will not accept them if they are sent to the BIRT report via the querystring? Seems like it has a problem with the fact that its a string in the first place. I have correctly set up these report parameters in my BIRT report. I have also tried changing them by specifying the "Format as" value to be a "custom" YYYY-MM-dd but this didnt work. Is it even possible to send date parameters to a birt report via querystring? Im guessing the solution will involve converting these strings to dates within the birt report's "script" tab. but I dont know how to access querystring variables from here or how to set report parameter variables.   Hi, I am implementing a full text search API for my rails apps, and so far have been having great success with Thinking Sphinx. I now want to implement a date range search, and keep getting the "bad value for range" error. Basically I am trying to have the API request pass in a "since" date to see all posts after a certain date. I am specifying that the date should be in the YYYY-MM-DD format. Thanks for your help. • Search for a date between given ranges - Lotus

  I have been trying to work out what is the best way to search for gather all of the documents in a database that have a certain date. Originally I was trying to use FTsearch or search to move through a document collection, but I changed over to processing a view and associated documents. My first question is what is the easiest way to spin through a set of documents and find if a date stored in the documents is greater than or less than a specified date? So, to continue working I implemented the following code. If (doc.creationDate(0) > cdat(parm1)) And (doc.creationDate(0) < CDat(parm2)) then ... end if but the results are off Included! Date:3/12/10 11:07:08 P1:3/1/10 P2: 3/5/10 Included! Date:3/13/10 9:15:09 P1:3/1/10 P2: 3/5/10 Included! Date:3/17/10 16:22:07P1:3/1/10 P2: 3/5/10 You can see that the date stored in the doc is not between P1 and P2. BUT! it does limit the documents with a date less than P1 correctly. So I won't get a result for a document with a date less than 3/1/10 If there isn't a better way than the if statement, can someone help me understand why the two examples from above are included?

  I am looking for a way to check if an exact string match exists in another string using Regex or any better method suggested. I understand that you tell regex to match a space or any other non-word character at the beginning or end of a string. However, I don't know exactly how to set it up. Search String: t String 1: Hello World, Nice to see you! t String 2: Hello World, Nice to see you! String 3: T Hello World, Nice to see you! I would like to use the search string and compare it to String 1, String 2 and String 3 and only get a positive match from String 1 and String 3 but not from String 2. Requirements: Search String may be at any character position in the Subject. There may or may not be a white-space character before or after it. I do not want it to match if it is part of another string; such as part of a word. For the sake of this question: I think I would do this using this pattern: /\bt\b/gi /\b{$search_string}\b/gi Does this look right? Can it be made better? Any situations where this pattern wouldn't work? Additional info: this will be used in PHP 5

• jQuery/JavaScript Date form validation

  I am using the jQuery date picker calendar in a form. Once submitted the form passes params along via the url to a third party site. Everything works fine, except for one thing. If the value inserted into the date field by the datepicker calendar is subsequently deleted, or if the default date, that is in the form on page load, is deleted and the form is submitted I get the following error: "Conversion from string "" to type 'Date' is not valid." The solution to my problem is really simple, I want to validate the text field where the date is submitted and send out a default date (current date) if the field is empty for any reason. The problem is I am terrible at Javascript and cannot figure out how to do this. Here is the form code for my date field. Using this example, thisArgClass would be equal to Integer.class, thisArgString would be a string that read "62", and thisArg would be an instance of Integer that is equal to 62. I tried thisArg.valueOf(thisArgString), but I guess valueOf(<String>) is only a method of certain subclasses of Object. For whatever reason, I can't seem to be able to cast thisArg to thisArgClass (like so: thisArg = (thisArgClass)thisArgClass.newInstance();, at which point valueOf(<String>) should become accessible. There's got to be a nice, clean way of doing this, but it is beyond my abilities at this point. How can I get the value of the string loaded into a dynamically-typed object (Integer, Long, Float, Double, String, Character, Boolean, etc.)? Or am I just overthinking this, and Java will do the conversion for me? :confused:

  Does PHP calculate weeks as being Sunday - Saturday? For a given date I am trying to determine the beginning and ending date of it's week as well as the beginning date of the next/previous weeks. It appears the string is truncated when running this. What recommendations can anyone make. I have no control over the database structure and am only reading foxpro free tables. • How can I create a Base64-Encoded string from an GDI+ Image in C++?

  I asked a question recently, How can I create an Image in GDI+ from a Base64-Encoded string in C++?, which got a response that led me to the answer. Now I need to do the opposite - I have an Image in GDI+ whose image data I need to turn into a Base64-Encoded string. Due to its nature, it's not straightforward. The crux of the issue is that an Image in GDI+ can save out its data to either a file or an IStream*. I don't want to save to a file, so I need to use the resulting stream. Problem is, this is where my knowledge breaks down. This first part is what I figured out in the other question // Initialize GDI+. IStream shouldn't be an object itself, it's an interface for other types of streams. I'd go down the road from getting string-Image in reverse, but I don't know how to determine the size of the stream, which appears to be key to that route. How can I go from an IStream* to a string (which I will then Base64-Encode)? Or is there a much better way to go from a GDI+ Image to a string?

• SQL: empty string vs NULL value

  I know this subject is a bit controversial and there are a lot of various articles/opinions floating around the internet. Unfortunatelly, most of them assume the person doesn't know what the difference between NULL and empty string is. So they tell stories about surprising results with joins/aggregates and generally do a bit more advanced SQL lessons. By doing this, they absolutely miss the whole point and are therefore useless for me. So hopefully this question and all answers will move subject a bit forward. Let's suppose I have a table with personal information (name, birth, etc) where one of the columns is an email address with varchar type. We assume that for some reason some people might not want to provide an email address. When inserting such data (without email) into the table, there are two available choices: set cell to NULL or set it to empty string (''). Let's assume that I'm aware of all the technical implications of choosing one solution over another and I can create correct SQL queries for either scenario. The problem is even when both values differ on the technical level, they are exactly the same on logical level. After looking at NULL and '' I came to a single conclusion: I don't know email address of the guy. Also no matter how hard i tried, I was not able to sent an e-mail using either NULL or empty string, so apparently most SMTP servers out there agree with my logic. So i tend to use NULL where i don't know the value and consider empty string a bad thing. After some intense discussions with colleagues i came with two questions: am I right in assuming that using empty string for an unknown value is causing a database to "lie" about the facts? To be more precise: using SQL's idea of what is value and what is not, I might come to conclusion: we have e-mail address, just by finding out it is not null. But then later on, when trying to send e-mail I'll come to contradictory conclusion: no, we don't have e-mail address, that @!#$ Database must have been lying! Is there any logical scenario in which an empty string '' could be such a good carrier of important information (besides value and no value), which would be troublesome/inefficient to store by any other way (like additional column). I've seen many posts claiming that sometimes it's good to use empty string along with real values and NULLs, but so far haven't seen a scenario that would be logical (in terms of SQL/DB design). P.S. Some people will be tempted to answer, that it is just a matter of personal taste. I don't agree. To me it is a design decision with important consequences. So i'd like to see answers where opion about this is backed by some logical and/or technical reasons.

• Extracting the Date from a DateTime in Entity Framework 4 and LINQ

  In my current ASP.NET 4 project, I’m displaying dates in a GridDateTimeColumn of Telerik’s ASP.NET Radgrid control. I don’t care about the time stuff, so my DataFormatString shows only the date bits: <telerik:GridDateTimeColumn FilterControlWidth="100px"   DataField="DateCreated" HeaderText="Created"    SortExpression="DateCreated" ReadOnly="True"    UniqueName="DateCreated" PickerType="DatePicker"    DataFormatString="{0:dd MMM yy}"> My problem was that I couldn’t get the built-in column filtering (it uses Telerik’s DatePicker control) to behave.  The DatePicker assumes that the time is 00:00:00 but the data would have times like 09:22:21. So, when you select a date and apply the EqualTo filter, you get no results. You would get results if all the time portions were 00:00:00. In essence, I wanted my Entity Framework query to give the DatePicker what it wanted… a Date without the Time portion. Fortunately, EF4 provides the TruncateTime  function. After you include Imports System.Data.Objects.EntityFunctions You’ll find that your EF queries will accept the TruncateTime function. • Finding the maximum value/date across columns

  While working on some code recently I discovered a neat little trick to find the maximum value across several columns….. So the starting point was finding the maximum date across several related tables and storing the maximum value against an aggregated record. After considering pivoting the data I opted for a case statement, this seemed reasonable until I discovered other areas which needed to determine the maximum date between 5 or more tables which didn't scale well. My date is as follows root@machine cron.daily]# date Thu Aug 23 06:25:21 GMT 2012 Now based on details in various forums I tried to fix this by setting /etc/timezone to “+0800” but it didn’t work My /etc/localtime points to /usr/share/zoneinfo/GMT and is managed by puppet How do I go about fixing this? I still want all my machines to be in GMT timezone. • Why does the file date always change to the current date?

  We are a programming shop, but this i snot a programming question. My boss has put an external HD on the network. It contains the 'home' folders for users on the network. He uses it to place VB projects that he wants me to work on. But no matter what date and time he places a project on the drive, the file dates(modified) always shows the current date, though nothing in the files have changed. It makes it very hard to confirm that he has given me the latest versions. (He is not a fan of version control and nothing I do will convince him different.) Any ideas why this happens and how to prevent it from happening? P.S. As I wrote this I decided to add the last accessed date to the file display, and those dates happen to show the dates I expect to see. Why is the modified date getting changed, but not the accessed date. Does the accessed date change only when the files are opened or read, changed or not? Note: I use Directory Opus 9, a replacement for windows file browser. Thanks, Marshall

  I'd like to show in our app when the latest production deploy was made, as a means of showing an ongoing commitment to improvement, etc, etc. Off the top of my head I'm thinking of getting a last_updated_at from one of the files, but I'd like to hear other thoughts. What's the best way to get the date of the latest production deploy dynamically? Thanks, Josh

• date_sub is not working

  As my server is not upgreaded to php 5.3 (it is in PHP Version 5.2.11) date_sub is not working. here is the code: $date = date_create(date('Y-m-d')); date_sub($date, date_interval_create_from_date_string('60 days')); $date1= date_format($date, 'Y-m-d'); but its ok in my localhost(which is in 5.3), but not in server(5.2.11). Can you please tell me how can i make this date subtraction working on 5.2.11 ?

• MySQL to fill in missing dates when using GROUP BY DATE(table.timestamp) without joining on temporar

  Hello, after reading through a couple similar Qs/As I haven't quite found the solution I'm looking for. The table data I have is GROUP BY DATE(timestamp) and returning a count, example result: [timestamp] = 2010-05-12 20:18:36 [count] = 10 [timestamp] = 2010-05-14 10:10:10 [count] = 8 Without using a temporary table, or calendar table is there a way to fill in those missing dates? so that with the same table data would return (adding the bold row): [timestamp] = 2010-05-12 20:18:36 [count] = 10 [timestamp] = 2010-05-13 00:00:00 [count] = 0 [timestamp] = 2010-05-14 10:10:10 [count] = 8 Thanks!

• Spring Data MongoDB Date between two Dates

  i'm using Spring Data for MongoDB and got the following classes class A { List<B> b; } class B { Date startDate; Date endDate; } when i save an object of A it gets persisted like { "_id" : "DQDVDE000VFP8E39", "b" : [ { "startDate" : ISODate("2009-10-05T22:00:00Z"), "endDate" : ISODate("2009-10-29T23:00:00Z") }, { "startDate" : ISODate("2009-11-01T23:00:00Z"), "endDate" : ISODate("2009-12-30T23:00:00Z") } ] } Now i want to query the db for documents matching entries in b where a given date is between startDate and endDate. Query query = new Query(Criteria.where("a").elemMatch( Criteria.where("startDate").gte(date) .and("endDate").lte(date) ); Which results in the following mongo query: { "margins": { "$elemMatch": { "startDate" : { "$gte" : { "$date" : "2009-11-03T23:00:00.000Z"}}, "endDate" : { "$lte" : { "$date" : "2009-11-03T23:00:00.000Z"}} } } } but returns no resulting documents. Does anybody know what i'm doing wrong? I don't get it... Thank you very much in advance!!

• How can I set the minDate/maxDate for jQueryUI Datepicker using a string?

  jQueryUI Datepicker documentation states that the minDate option can be set using "a string in the current dateFormat". So I've tried the following to initialize datepickers: $("input.date").datepicker({ minDate: "01/01/2010", maxDate: "12/31/2010" }); However, this results in my datepicker having a selectable date range that goes from 11/06/2015 to 12/17/2015. I've checked the current dateformat and its mm/dd/yy, which is supposed to mean 2 digits for the month, 2 for the day, and 4 for the year, separated by slashes. I've also tried including dateFormat: "mm/dd/yy" in the inizialization statement. I've also checked the values for minDate and maxDate afterwards and they ARE being set to the values I want: 01/01/2010 and 12/31/2010. I want to be able to set min/maxDate with strings because I'm being passed these values as strings from somewhere else. Maybe someone knows why this happens and how to solve this, or a workaround to achieve this, perphaps changing the format of the date strings or something?   Greeting People,, I'm trying to retrieve records from table by knowing the date in column contains date and time. let me explain my self clearly with this example: suppose i have table called t1 which contains only two column name, date respectively the data stored in column date like this "8/3/2010 12:34:20 PM" i want to retrieve this record by this query for example: Select * from t1 where date="8/3/2010" // notes i don't put the time. this query give me nothing ! SO now my question is how can i retrieve date by knowing only date without the time !

• Higlight selected date in VB.NET MonthCalender

  Hi , I am using MonthCalender control in vb.net to select a date. I am able to save the selected date to DB and also retrieve and bold the previous selected date. But even though date is bolded it is not displayed when the form loads. It still highlights today's date. What Do i do to highlight the previous chosen dates. Also i want to disable choosing date range. I have my code below.   I want to know the current Date and Time. The code Calendar.getInstance(); represents a date and time of the system on which the program is running and the system date can be wrong. So Is there any way by which I can get correct current date and time irrespective of the date and time of the system on which program is running?
