  • Using Microsoft's Chart Controls In An ASP.NET Application: Serializing Chart Data

    In most usage scenarios, the data displayed in a Microsoft Chart control comes from some dynamic source, such as from a database query. The appearance of the chart can be modified dynamically, as well; past installments in this article series showed how to programmatically customize the axes, labels, and other appearance-related settings. However, it is possible to statically define the chart's data and appearance strictly through the control's declarative markup. One of the demos examined in the Getting Started article rendered a column chart with seven columns whose labels and values were defined statically in the <asp:Series> tag's <Points> collection. Given this functionality, it should come as no surprise that the Microsoft Chart Controls also support serialization. Serialization is the process of persisting the state of a control or an object to some other medium, such as to disk. Deserialization is the inverse process, and involves taking the persisted data and recreating the control or object. With just a few lines of code you can persist the appearance settings, the data, or both to a file on disk or to any stream. Likewise, it takes just a few lines of codes to reconstitute a chart from the persisted information. This article shows how to use the Microsoft Chart Control's serialization functionality by examining a demo application that allows users to create custom charts, specifying the data to plot and some appearance-related settings.   • Adobe Illustrator can't open SVG file

    I have a generated SVG file which for some reason won't open in Adobe Illustrator when I serve the file content from my ASP.net application, but if I were to write this generated file directly to the file system from my ASP.net application, the file opens fine! I've put a zip of the two files here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1761973/Files.zip The zip has two files: Map.svg Test.svg Map.svg doesn't open in Illustrator, it shows up a Text Import Options dialog, and upon clicking OK, will show the XML content of the file. Test.svg opens fine in Illustrator. Doing a comparison of the two files yields NO DIFFERENCES whatsoever! There must be something different in these two files (caused by downloading the generated SVG from the web browser), but I have no idea what?

  • mono: application not running when web.config in subfolder

    I run asp.net on mono. I wanted to run blogengine: http://www.dotnetblogengine.net/ I downloaded, put it in /var/www/blogengine, on the console went to /var/www/blogengine and started xsp2. I went to http://localhost:8080, and it ran without problems. Then I stopped xsp2, went to /var/www and started xsp2. I went to http://localhost:8080/blogengine It ended with a strange error: The section <blogProvider> can't be defined in this configuration file (the allowed definition context is 'MachineToApplication'). (/var/www/blogengine/Web.Config line 9) The problem seems to be that it stops working as soon as the xsp2 root folder is anything else than the application root folder... Do I have to config anything ? Or what else is wrong ?

  • Impersonation on IIS 7.0 passes the machine credentials for Crystal Reports

    On a 32-bit Windows 2008 server running the Donor2 Application in the Classic .NET Managed Pipeline mode, configured for Windows Integrated Authentication and Impersonation, all of the .NET pages are passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName]. This is the correct, expected behavior. The Crystal Reports pages, instead of passing the authenticated user’s credentials, are passing the IIS Server’s credentials [DomainName\MachineName$]. One of the very frustrating aspects of this situation is that I have another server which, as far as I can tell, is configured identically. That server, when loading Crystal Reports, is passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName] as expected. I have obviously missed something, but I have no idea what it could be.

  • How can you know what is w3wp.exe doing? (or how to diagnose a performance problem)

    I'm having a performance problem in a site we've made, and I'm not exactly sure how to start diagnosing it. The short description is: We have a very small site (http://hearablog.com) with very little traffic, in a crappy dedicated server, CPU is always very high, sometimes it stays at 100% for minutes, and w3wp.exe is taking most of it. A typical scenario is w3wp.exe takes 60%, and SQL Server takes about 30%. Our DB is pretty small too. Long description and more details: The site is hosted in a very crappy server by Cari.Net. From the beginning we had the feeling that the server didn't quite behave correctly, like some things would take just too long, so this could be a configuration problem from the get go. It may also be that we are getting a virtual server while we're supposed to have a dedicated one, although we have no evidence that'd indicate this, except for the fact that the server tends to be quite slow. The server is Windows 2008 Standard 64-bit, with SQL 2008 Express Hardware is a Celeron 2.80 GHz, 1Gb RAM The website is developed in ASP.Net MVC, using Entity Framework for data access. Now, this is pretty crappy hardware, but i've had other servers with these guys, with equivalent (or worse) HW, and performance is much better than this one. That said, the other servers have W2003 and SQL2005, and I'm using ASP.Net "WebForms" 2.0, no MVC, no LINQ, no EF; so I'm not sure whether going to 2008 / the other stuff means a big performance penalty is expected. I'm serving MP3 files (5-20 Mb) regularly, which is a slightly unusual load, maybe that is causing some kind of problems? Would that cause w3wp to use a lot of CPU? Disk usage seems very low. Memory is usually around 90%, but disk usage seems to indicate it's not paging much. I get tons of e-mails every day about SQL timeouts, for queries taking over 30 seconds, although all our queries are pretty straightforward (or should be, but EF may be screwing it up). This is what resource monitor looks like in one of these "sprints" of 100% CPU, in case there's anything useful there. And a snapshot of some performance counters: Now, what confuses me very much is that CPU usage of w3wp is just so high. It shouldn't be doing much really... So my questions are... Is there any way of finding out "what" it is doing? Maybe even profile it? Any performance counters I should be looking at? Is this to be expected given this hardware/software configuration? Is this could be cause by some kind of configuration failure, where would you start looking? Thank you VERY much. Daniel Magliola

  • Using Microsoft's Chart Controls In An ASP.NET Application: Serializing Chart Data

    In most usage scenarios, the data displayed in a Microsoft Chart control comes from some dynamic source, such as from a database query. The appearance of the chart can be modified dynamically, as well; past installments in this article series showed how to programmatically customize the axes, labels, and other appearance-related settings. However, it is possible to statically define the chart's data and appearance strictly through the control's declarative markup. One of the demos examined in the Getting Started article rendered a column chart with seven columns whose labels and values were defined statically in the <asp:Series> tag's <Points> collection. Given this functionality, it should come as no surprise that the Microsoft Chart Controls also support serialization. Serialization is the process of persisting the state of a control or an object to some other medium, such as to disk. Deserialization is the inverse process, and involves taking the persisted data and recreating the control or object. With just a few lines of code you can persist the appearance settings, the data, or both to a file on disk or to any stream. Likewise, it takes just a few lines of codes to reconstitute a chart from the persisted information. This article shows how to use the Microsoft Chart Control's serialization functionality by examining a demo application that allows users to create custom charts, specifying the data to plot and some appearance-related settings.   • Site stopped working after adding NIC card

    My boss made a bit of blunder yesterday, he added a secondary NIC card to the a machine hosting a website so that it could be part of the local network. He also added it to the <blah>.local domain (which all our servers are being added too). The website failed following this. He thought this was because the machine was now called <blahblah>.<blah>.local, so he removed it from the domain and restarted. Same problem a asp.net error, something to do with a binding error. Sorry he didn’t make a note of it. He traced it back to the WCF services that are running on the site. Anyway, it looks like ASP.NET gets confused connecting to the database when there’s multiple network cards. The 173.x.x.x IP address (which is internal), doesn’t route to the internet.. Therefore it’s trying to connect via the wrong network. Any ideas about how to resolve it?

The server has SQL & SSAS installed so the problem was not likely to be in the network transfer as its using shared memory.     hullo folks....this is my first thread here Ok,i first installed ubuntu 11.10 the day it released on my old laptop...internet worked fine without configuring anything so now,i installed ubuntu 11.10 on my newer laptop.But it says ,"device not ready(firmware missing".
