    Hello, I have the following problems: First: I am trying to do a 32-spaces bitwise left shift on a large number, and for some reason the number is always returned as-is. For example: echo(516103988<<32); // echoes 516103988 Because shifting the bits to the left one space is the equivalent of multiplying by 2, i tried multiplying the number by 2^32, and it works, it returns 2216649749795176448. Second: I have to add 9379 to the number from the above point: printf('%0.0f', 2216649749795176448 + 9379); // prints 2216649749795185920 Should print: 2216649749795185827

    This MSDN article proves the correctness of Reservoir Sampling algorithm as follows: Base case is trivial. For the k+1st case, the probability a given element i with position <= k is in R is s/k. The probability i is replaced is the probability k+1st element is chosen multiplied by i being chosen to be replaced, which is: s/(k+1) * 1/s = 1/(k+1), and prob that i is not replaced is k/k+1. So any given element's probability of lasting after k+1 rounds is: (chosen in k steps, and not removed in k steps) = s/k * k/(k+1), which is s/(k+1). So, when k+1 = n, any element is present with probability s/n. about step 3: What are the k+1 rounds mentioned? What is chosen in k steps, and not removed in k steps? Why are we only calculating this probability for elements that were already in R after the first s steps?

For instance, say I want a random number between 1-5, with the probability being: 1: Comes up 20% of the time 2: Comes up 10% of the time 3: Comes up 40% of the time 4: Comes up 25% of the time 5: Comes up 5% of the time Is there anything in the standard library, or other libraries out there that would do this? Alternatively, is there an efficient way to do this myself?

    My new phone does not recognize a phone number unless it's area code matches the incoming call. Since I live in Idaho where an area code is not needed for in-state calls, many of my contacts were saved without an area code. Since I have thousands of contacts stored in my phone, it would not be practical to manually update them. I decided to write the following PHP script to handle the problem.     I've plotted some nice graphs with jquery flot. On the x-as the weeknumber is displayed. I would like to display the weeknumbers of the winter season (oct-apr) but that is not possible 'cos flot likes a straight set (0,1,2,3,4 etc) and not (49, 50, 51, 52, 1, 2 etc). It has worked fine on 32 bit Windows but not working on 64 bit Windows 7. Here are the Python modules I have created for testing: test_icon_overlay.py: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0002.obj ) com server created in Python for icon overlay which adds check mark overlay icon(C:\icons\test.ico) on "C:\icons" folder setup_VI.py: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0003.obj ) setup file which creates test_icon_overlay.dll for distribution. icons.zip: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0001.zip ) for testing you should extract icons.zip inside C:\ Icon overlay appears on C:\icons folder when I execute python test_icon_overlay.py on Windows command prompt and restarts explorer.exe. But its not working with the dll file created using setup_VI.py I have created dll file using python setup_VI.py py2exe and then tried to register it using regsvr32 test_icon_overlay.dll. Registration fails with windows error message Error 0x80040201 while registering shell extension. Then I turned on logger in Python27/Lib/site-packages/py2exe/boot_com_servers.py and here is the traceback which I am getting in comerror.txt on regsvr32 test_icon_overlay.dll PATH is ['C:\\root\\avalon\\module\\sync\\python\\src\\dist\\library.zip'] Traceback (most recent call last): File "boot_com_servers.py", line 37, in <module> pywintypes.error: (126, 'GetModuleFileName', 'The specified module could not be found.') Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'DllRegisterServer' is not defined Looks like there might be a problem with win32api.GetModuleFileName(sys.frozendllhandle) or with the dll build on 64-bit Windows 7. Also, I saw that installation of pywin32-214.win-amd64-py2.7 on 64-bit Windows 7 finish with the error message: Snapshot close failed in file object destructor: sys.excepthook is missing lost sys.stderr Is there anything which I am doing wrong? Any help on this is highly appreciated.

    I am trying to solve complex thing (as it looks to me). I have next entities: PLAYER (few of them, with names like "John", "Peter", etc.). Each has unique ID. For simplicity let's think it's their name. GAME (few of them, say named "Hide and Seek", "Jump and Run", etc.). Same - each has unique ID. For simplicity of the case let it be it's name for now. SCORE (it's numeric). So, how it works. Each PLAYER can play in multiple GAMES. He gets some SCORE in every GAME. I need to build rating table -- and not one! Table #1: most played GAMES Table #2: best PLAYERS in all games (say the total SCORE in every GAME). Table #3: best PLAYERS per GAME (by SCORE in particularly that GAME). I could be build something straight right away, but that will not work. I will have more than 10,000 players; and 15 games, which will grow for sure. Score can be as low as 0, and as high as 1,000,000 (not sure if higher is possible at this moment) for player in the game. So I really need some relative data. Any suggestions? I am planning to do it with SQL, but may be just using it for key-value storage; anything -- any ideas are welcome. Thank you!

    I have a website that emails a link to the invoice when an order is complete. The link should be http://mysite.com/QuoteAndBook/Confirmation?orderId=123 But for some reason it is: http://204435-204435/QuoteAndBook/Confirmation?orderId=123 The host portion of the link is generated using HttpContext.Current.Request.Url.Host but I would expect that to return "mysite.com", not "204435-204435". Any idea what's going on?

    I created a java program to count up toward infinity: class up { public static void up (int n) { System.out.println (n) ; up (n+1) ; } public static void main (String[] arg) { up (1) ; } } i didn't actually expect it to get there but the thing that i noticed that was a bit curious was that it stopped at the same number each time: 518669 what is the significance of this number? (or of this number +1 i suppose). (also as a bit of an aside question, I've been told that the way i format my code is bad [indentation and such] what am i doing that isn't desirable?)

    Let's say I have this: float i = 1.5 in binary, this float is represented as: 0 01111111 10000000000000000000000 I broke up the binary to represent the 'signed', 'exponent' and 'fraction' chunks. What I don't understand is how this represents 1.5. The exponent is 0 once you subtract the bias (127 - 127), and the fraction part with the implicit leading one is 1.1. How does 1.1 scaled by nothing = 1.5???

    I'm writing an app that will create lots of JMS topic subscribers. What is best practise regarding reusing sessions? A session per subscriber? A pool of sessions? With a session per subscriber the thread count seems unreasonable. Is this a job for something like a ServerSessionPool? What I've seen so far seems to suggest that ServerSessionPool is more geared towards one receiver consuming messages concurrently rather than lots of receivers. I'm currently working with HornetQ 2.0.0GA embedded in JBoss 4.3.0CP6.

    Trying to figure out this pseudo code. The following is assumed.... I can only use unsigned and signed integers (or long). Division returns a real number with no remainder. MOD returns a real number. Fractions and decimals are not handled. INT I = 41828; INT C = 15; INT D = 0; D = (I / 65535) * C; How would you handle a fraction (or decimal value) in this situation? Is there a way to use negative value to represent the remainder? In this example I/65535 should be 0.638, however, with the limitations, I get 0 with a MOD of 638. How can I then multiply by C to get the correct answer? Hope that makes sense.

The simulator parse them from strings in a correct way but when I test the app on my iPhone it lose the decimal part.     How is it better to encode a complex number into RGB pixel and vice versa? Probably (logarithm of) an absolute value goes to brightness and an argument goes to hue. Desaturated pixes should receive randomized argument in reverse transformation. Something like: 0 - (0,0,0) 1 - (255,0,0) -1 - (0,255,255) 0.5 - (128,0,0) i - (255,255,0) -i - (255,0,255) (0,0,0) - 0 (255,255,255) - e^(i * random) (128,128,128) - 0.5 * e^(i *random) (0,128,128) - -0.5 Are there ready-made formulas for that?

    Hi, VS 2010 solution and Silverlight project builds fine, then: I open MyView.xaml view in Expression Blend 4 Add sample data from class (I use my class defined in the same project) after I add new sample design data with Expression blend 4, everything looks fine, you see the added sample data in the EB 4 fine, you also see the data in VS 2010 designer too. Close the EB 4, and next VS 2010 build is giving me this errors: Error 7 XAML Namespace http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008 is not resolved. C:\Code\source\...myview.xaml and: Error 12 Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ... TestSampleData.xaml when I open the TestSampleData.xaml I see that namespace for my class used to define sample data is not recognized. However this namespace and the class itself exist in the same project! If I remove the design data from the MyView.xaml: d:DataContext="{d:DesignData /SampleData/TestSampleData.xaml}" it builds fine and the namespace in TestSampleData.xaml is recognized this time?? and then if add: d:DataContext="{d:DesignData /SampleData/TestSampleData.xaml}" I again see in the VS 2010 designer sample data, but the next build fails and again I see studio cant find the namespace in my TestSampleData.xaml containing sample data. That cycle is driving me crazy. Am I missing something here, is it not possible to have your class defining sample design data in the same project you have the MyView.xaml view?? cheers Valko

I am using the parse() method of NumberFormat. public static void main(String[] args) throws ParseException{ DecToTime dtt = new DecToTime(); dtt.decToTime("1.930000000000E+02"); } public void decToTime(String angle) throws ParseException{ DecimalFormat dform = new DecimalFormat(); //ParsePosition pp = new ParsePosition(13); Number angleAsNumber = dform.parse(angle); System.out.println(angleAsNumber); } The result I get is 1.93 I didn't really expect this to work because 1.930000000000E+02 is a pretty unusual looking number, do I have to do some string parsing first to remove the zeros? Or is there a quick and elegant way?
