• Renting an "EC2" server VS buying one (for a start up in initial stages)

  We are a small start up in the early stages and are working on a SaaS-based Rails product. Currently, we use EC2 for a small instance and have a need for another large/extra-large instance as we are beginning to deploy to the Cloud and get ready to release our "alpha" version. While EC2 was my choice for numerous reasons (reliability, accessibility - small team is geographically dispersed, maintainability, and things of that nature), it appears to be rather expensive. While the product will ultimately be deployed in the Cloud (be it EC2 or otherwise) and that experience would help the development team, would it make sense to purchase a physical server and stick it in the basement or bite the bullet and pay the price for EC2 (or other Cloud Providers)? While such decisions are driven by numerous factors, it would certainly help to get the thoughts of other folks who may have been in similar situations. Hence, the post. Thanks much!

• I cannot access Windows Update at all

  I have been unable to access the Windows update site for a couple of weeks now. I just get a message saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and saying I have connection problems. Same thing is replicated with any other Microsoft site I try to access. The Automatic Updates also do not work. I can access every other wesbite I've surfed to. I've tried Googling the problem and based on what other site have suggested I have cleared my cache and temp files. I've scanning my hard drive with my antivirus in case I have a virus (nada). I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus (I run Zone Alarm). I've downloaded SpyBot and scanned my drive with that in case something was missed by Zone Alarm (again nada). Based on suggestions from the smart cookies on the Bad Science forum, I've used nslookup to check my translation isn't wonky (got all the info they said I should get). I've also tried navigating there directly using the IP address I was given (nope). I normally access the internet through a 3 mobile broadband connection, but have also tried connecting using a mate's wi-fi connection in case it was something on my mobile modem interferring. I run Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 7 and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite as my anti-virus/ firewall. Any suggestions?

• cannot connect to vpn server (error 721)

  Hi I got 2 internet connections in my computer. One is using 3.5G HSDPA modem (vodafone huawei e220) and the other using mobile phone (cdma zte c261). Both are using different ISP and i have both. at the moment, i can connect to my office vpn using the HSDPA modem one. But when i tried to use cdma modem (dial up - mobile phone modem), i am just able to get "verifying username and password" and then after a few minutes it display error : Error 721 The Remote Computer didn't respond. I tried to ping into my office ip address, it got good result but still cannot connect to the vpn. I tried to turn off all my firewall (i'm using commodo) and has no response as well. In my cdma mobile phone modem Network connections I tried to allow iNternet connection sharing as well ... and turn on all Internet Protocol TCP/IP, File & Printer Sharing & Client for microsoft networks. But all of my effort has no effect. How to fix this problem ? note: my office using windows vpn as well. thank you .

• diskmgmt.msc: Cannot delete volume from USB

  I have an USB drive with about 8GB of size. It has a single partition of size 169MB. Don't know why, I got it that way. I wanted to delete this small (FAT32) partition and create a single NTFS volume on it. First, I noticed that the "Delete volumme" option is disabled (grayed out). I then tried "Change drive letter and paths..." and removed "F:", that way I made sure that there are no open files on it. The "Delete volume" was still disabled. Then I got suspicious, and right clicked on the "Unallocated" area and I noticed that I did not have any useful option. All "New * volume" items are disabled. I exited from diskmgmt.msc, ran a cmd.exe with administrator privileges, ran the diskmgmt.msc from it, same experiences. Why can't i do anything with this disk? I've read some advices about downloading some alternative free software, but I rather not do it if possible. I still hope that Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit alone can reinitialize an USB drive without external help. I also cannot do anything with my other 8GB pendrive. It's all an NTFS volume, I tried to delete it, but the option is disabled here too. Maybe I have some settings somewhere that prevents my from partitioning USB disks. (I have the freedom to remove my D: partition which is the second - not counding the "System reserved" - on my SSD disk.)

• Cannot boot from Yumi multiboot USB stick

  I've just created a multiboot USB stick using Yumi. I tried to start my notebook (Asus K70IO) using it, but all I see is just a black screen with blinking underscore even after waiting for minutes. If during this time I remove the USB stick I get the message: "Operating system load error". How do I properly load my Yumi USB stick and use it? I've tried formatting it using Yumi's checkbox to format the stick in FAT32 too, but it didn't help. Now I tried to use Sardu 2.0.5 and met same problem: black screen and blinkin underscore, if I remove stick I see "Operating system load error" and my OS starts to boot. At the same time if I create bootable USB stick from ISO using UltraISO it boots smoothly.

• MacBook start up problem

  I have an aging, ailing MacBook. The battery died on it a few months ago, but can still use it when plugged in. I recently upgraded it to Snow Leopard. Had it unplugged for a few days. Went to boot it up today and now get this symptom: start up chime white screen with apple logo shuts off That's all it'll do. I tried unplugging and holding down the power button for 30 seconds but that didn't remedy the situation. Any theories? Finally an excuse to get the 27" iMac?

• Cannot enable cron logs on Ubuntu 10.04

  I've just the following commands on Ubuntu 10.04 in order to enable cron logs. But I still don't see the file /var/logs/cron. 1. Edit /etc/syslog.conf and uncomment the line starting with cron.* 2. sudo /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart 3. sudo /etc/init.d/cron restart (I've also tried sudo service cron restart). What am i missing to do ? Also, I would like to know how can I run cron manually and not just start the service. thanks

• Cannot open root device xvda1 or unknown-block(0,0)

  I'm putting together a Dom0 and three DomU (all Gentoo) with kernel 3.5.7 and Xen 4.1.1. Each Dom has it's own md (md0 for Dom0, md1 for Dom1 etc). Dom0 works fine so far, however, I'm stuck trying to create DomUs.   I have been learning PHP. I had installed Apache-server (not in a combination-suite like USBWebserver). Now I'm trying to put my sites on a portable stick, using USBWebserver. I already used that program before to carry MySQL databases with me (and Apache worked as well, cause I used the included PHPMyAdmin for managing the databases.), but now it doesn't work anymore. When I start the program, I keep having the text saying Apache is offline. I've tried to open Apache using the command line (don't know what that would do, but, it's just a try). I got an error message saying Syntax error on line 494 of C:/.../httpd.conf: Cannot load C:/.../php5apache2_2.dll into server: (The following is translated from Dutch) An initialization routine of the dynamic link library (dll-file) has failed. Line 494 says this: LoadModule php5_module "C:/Users/School/Downloads/USBWebserver v8_en/php/php5apache2_2.dll" My first Apache installation (its service) is not running. The ports are different. • Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

  I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

• Error 1069 the service did not start due to a logon failure

  Our CruiseControl.NET service on Win2003 Server (VMWare Virtual) was recently changed from a service account to a user account to allow for a new part of our build process to work. The new user has "Log on as a service" rights, verified by checking Local Security Settings - Local Policies - User Rights Assignment, and the user password is set to never expire. The problem I'm facing is every time the service is restarted, I get the 1069 error as described in this questions subject. I have to go into the properties of the service (log on tab) and re-enter the password, even though it hasn't changed, and the user already has the appropriate rights. Once I enter the password apply the changes, a prompt appears telling me that the user has been granted log on as a service rights. The service will then start will no problems. Not a show stopper, but a pain none-the-less. Why isn't the password persisting with the service?

  I am trying to send email from my gmail account to a couple user accounts I have on my new Centos server. The email is setup correctly and I can send receive from accounts ok except info and support. I tried to setup two users "info" and "support" I have a php form that sends out email that works fine for all users except info and support. To test this and make sure that something did not change from yesterday i just created a new user "frank" and tried the submit form and it worked fine. From my gmail account i can email "frank" however i cannot email "info" or "support" The logs I pulled are as follows and i think i see the issue but no idea how to fix it. • Can't start a service (sudo) remotely from script and keep it running

  I have a service (tomcat) that needs sudo to be started. I made a simple script on the remote server in /root/bin/test.sh #!/bin/sh sudo service tomcat start read (The script needs to do other stuff too, just pared down for simplicity). When I run a it directly on the remote server, tomcat starts and continues running on the server after I disconnect. When I run it remotely, the process starts, (I can see it when paused for the "read"), but once the script ends, it's gone.   Any executable that I attempt to run on this laptop pops up an error stating The program can't start because LPK.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I have tried doing regsvr32 lpk.dll from within system32, but that returns the error The module "lpk.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DLLRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "lpk.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again. I was able to copy the DLL file from a working computer, but I get the same issue. How would I go about registering this DLL? Or, alternatively, which program would I have to reinstall to get the DLL to work again? The system is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with Service Pack 1. I would really like not to reinstall the OS, but at this point, I'm about ready to.

• Can't start program by PsExec on windows server 2003 64-bit

  I ran PsExec on a windows server 2003 32-bit machine to remotely launch a program on a windows server 2003 64-bit machine. The program is a win32 program with dependency to msvcr80.dll, msvcp80.dll, msjava.dll, PocoFoundation.dll, PocoNet.dll. The process will freeze and looks like fail to start the user interface. However, the program was running fine if I log on that 64-bit machine and double click on it. What could be wrong with using PsExec to launch it? I use process explorer but couldn't find anything. Thanks. EDIT: An update, this issue is actually happening to every program that launch by psexec on that host. For example, if try to use psexec to launch notepad.exe, I can see the process name (notepad.exe) in task manager, and notepad tab on taskbar. But when click on notepad tab, the window won't show up. It looks like the application stuck in the middle of launching process.

• Internet Explorer 9 won't start

  I have installed Internet Explorer 9. Now when I try to start it the application window flashes up briefly before closing again. What's wrong? I have tried to uninstall IE9, then the problem persisted with IE8. I reinstalled IE9 and the problem is still there. I have tried to use inetcpl.cpl to reset all settings and turn on software rendering, but it didn't help. I can't find any error messages in the Event logs, and the crash doesn't give any kind of error message. My system is Windows 7 Enterprise with SP1.

  Folks, got something really odd here I'd like to resolve. I've been using Awstats and have a couple of extra reports. I cannot get any of them to limit the rows using MaxNbOfExtraX to work. I even tried without the ExtraTrackedRowsLimit with MaxNbOfExtra1=100 but same error: No limit to 100 and the "excess of 500" error. I have the URLWithQuery=1 and my reports do run properly along with my regex filters. I am using MinHitExtra1 to limit the rows and that works, but why can I not get the MaxObOfExtraX option to work. • Cannot destroy ZFS snapshot: dataset already exists

  I have a server (T5220, though I doubt it matters) running Solaris 10 8/07 and I have a ZFS pool, "mysql", on internal disk. Within it I have a filesystem "mysql/data/4.1.12", which I snapshot hourly with a script from cron. I have one snapshot, created as one of those hourly snaps, that will not destroy. I have renamed it out of sequence to be "mysql/data/4.1.12@wibble" so that my script will not try and fail to destroy it, but it was originally within the sequence, though I doubt that matters. It renames successfully. The snapshot can be successfully navigated and read from through the .zfs/snapshots directory. It has no clones based on it. Trying to destroy it does this: (265) root@web-mysql4:/# zfs destroy mysql/data/4.1.12@wibble cannot destroy 'mysql/data/4.1.12@wibble': dataset already exists (266) root@web-mysql4:/# which is apparently nonsensical: of course it already exists, that's the point! Anyone seen anything like this before? Web searches show nothing obviously similar. I can provide patches installed if necessary.

• SharePoint Calendar - Start time after a certain hour

  I am working with SharePoint Calendar list to create a shift schedule for a team (End user side of things, I am not writing code). I have added a few custom columns to the Calendar List Item. I have the list exported to excel where I have a Pivot table set up so I can see a summary of the different columns - I can see the person's name (From the title column), total hours they are scheduled for (separated into weekdays and weekends based on a custom column I added). What I need is a way to check the start time of the shift to determine if it is a Day shift (starts at 7am), Eve shift (starts at 3pm), or a Night shift (starts at 10pm). So, when creating a new calculated column I would assume the function I need would go something like "=If([StartDate]...." but I am not sure on the rest. Anyone know how I would write that function?

• Cannot start IIS on XP64 Professional

  I have enabled the iis components for the first time on this machine, from control panel-add software-windows components, and rebooted. When I attempt to start the "Default Web Site" (which shows as 'Default Web Site (Stopped)' ) from inetmgr nothing happens.. no errors, nothing in the event log. Regmon and Filemon show no obvious errors. I've confirmed that nothing is running on port 80 and have tried changing the local port (8080, 8081 etc.,) with no effect. Further info -- I have removed the install, rebooted, added it back in, rebooted ... still not working. I have visual studio 2008, SQLServer 2008 installed.
