• Continuous Integration with 64-bit Sharepoint and TFS 2008?

  I've set up a 64-bit TFS 2008 build server with Sharepoint, continuous integration and out-of-the-box MSTest. Unit tests for plain business logic classes run just fine and test results are published into TFS. However, any test that uses Sharepoint's API fails horribly, SPFarm.Local returning null and so on. Is there a way to fix this? The tests run fine in an otherwise identical 32-bit development environment (Windows Server 2008 under Hyper-V, Sharepoint patched up to June 2009 cumulative update) from both Visual Studio and command line, so the problem is not about improper use of SPContext.Current or any other part of the API that needs to be run in a web server context. I've ruled out permissions issues, because the build agent account can deploy the solution and create site collections just fine with stsadm. The next culprit could be that the unit tests were being run with a 32-bit process, which couldn't access the 64-bit Sharepoint API properly. I tried a workaround, but it has the side effect of disabling TFS support in MSTest. Do I have to wait for 2010 versions of MS tools (and hope for the best) or is there a third-party test framework available that runs natively in 64 bit and can publish test results into TFS 2008?

I especially like the usage of yield and and the way that sets are treated as first class citizens. However, there in lies my problem. What would be the best way to: 1.Duplicate the functionality of the yield return construct in Java? Would it instead be best to maintain a list and append my partial results to this list? How would you handle the yield keyword. 2.Handle the dealing with the sets? I know that I could probably use one of the Java collections which implements that implements the Set interface and then using things like removeAll() to give me a set difference. Is this what you would do in that case? Ultimately, I'm looking to reduce this method into as concise and straightforward way as possible in Java. I'm thinking the return type of the java version of this method will likely return a list of int arrays or something similar. How would you handle the situations above when converting this method into Java?

• VB .Net - Reflection: Reflected Method from a loaded Assembly executes before calling method. Why?

  When I am loading an Assembly dynamically, then calling a method from it, I appear to be getting the method from Assembly executing before the code in the method that is calling it. It does not appear to be executing in a Serial manner as I would expect. Can anyone shine some light on why this might be happening. Below is some code to illustrate what I am seeing, the code from the some.dll assembly calls a method named PerformLookup. For testing I put a similar MessageBox type output with "PerformLookup Time: " as the text.   hello, i asked this question before but haven't been able to get an answer.. i get the following error when i retrieve an XML that only has 1 node (no repeating nodes) from a PHP page and i try to store in an ArrayCollection. -When I have MORE than 1 "name" nodes...i do NOT get an error. TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert "XXXXXX" to mx.collections.ArrayCollection. this error occurs as the line of code: myList= e.result.list.name; I'm using this ArrayCollection as a dataprovider for a Component -is there an alternative I can use that will take BOTH single and repeating nodes as well as work as a dataprovider? • Media recommendation engine - Single user system - How to start

  Hi guys, I want to implement a media recommendation engine. I saw a similar posts on this, but I think my requirements are bit different from those, so posting here. Here is the deal. I want to implement a recommendation engine for media players like VLC, which would be an engine that has to care for only single user. Like, it would be embedded in a media player on a PC which is typically used by single user. And it will start learning the likes and dislikes of the user and gradually learns what a user likes. Here it will not be able to find similar users for using their data for recommendation as its a single user system. So how to go about this? Or you can consider it as a recommendation engine that has to be put in say iPods, which has to learn about a single user and recommend music/Movies from the collections it has. I thought of start collecting the genre of music/movies (maybe even artist name) that user watches and recommend movies from the most watched Genre, but it look very crude, isn't it? • casting Collection<SomeClass> to Collection<SomeSuperClass>

  Hi all, I'm sure this has been answered before, but I really cannot find it. I have a java class SomeClass and an abstract class SomeSuperClass. SomeClass extends SomeSuperClass. Another abstract method has a method that returns a Collection<SomeSuperClass>. In an implementation class, I have a Collection<SomeClass> myCollection I understand that I cannot just return myCollection, because Collection<SomeClass> does not inherit from Collection<SomeSuperClass>. Nevertheless, I know that everything in myCollection is a SomeSuperClass because after all, they're SomeClass objects which extend SomeSuperClass. How can I make this work? I.e. I want public class A { private Collection<SomeClass> myCollection; public Collection<SomeSuperClass> getCollection() { return myCollection; //compile error! } } The only way I've found is casting via a non-generic type and getting unchecked warnings and whatnot. There must be a more elegant way, though? I feel that also using Collections.checkedSet() and friends are not needed, since it is statically certain that the returned collection only contains SomeClass objects (this would not be the case when downcasting instead of upcasting, but that's not what I'm doing). What am I missing? Thanks!

• Creating/Maintaining a large project-agnostic code library

  In order to reduce repetition and streamline testing/debugging, I'm trying to find the best way to develop a group of libraries that many projects can utilize. I'd like to keep individual executable relatively small, and have shared libraries for math, database, collections, graphics, etc. that were previously scattered among several projects and in many cases duplicated (bad!). This library is to be in an SVN repo and several programmers will be working on it. This library will be in constant development along with the executables that utilize it. For example, I want a code file in ProjectA to look something like the following: using MyCompany.Math.2D; //static 2D math methods using MyCompany.Math.3D; //static #D math methods using MyCompany.Comms.SQL; //static methods for doing simple SQLDB I/O using MyCompany.Graphics.BitmapOperations; //static methods that play with bitmaps So in my ProjectA solution file in VisualStudio, in order to develop/debug the MyCompany library I have to add several projects (Math, Comms, Graphics). Things get pretty cluttered and Solution files get out of date quickly between programmer SVN commits. I'm just looking for a high level approach to maintaining a large, shared code base in an SCN repository. I am fully willing to radically redesign my approach. I'm looking for that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you're design approach is spot on and development is fluid and natural. And ideas? Thanks!!

  good day everyone, hope yer all doin awesome am very new to javascript and jquery, and i (think) i have come up with a simple fade-in/out implementation on a site am workin on (check out http://www.s5ent.com/expandjs.html - if you have the time to check it for inefficiency or what that'd be real sweet). i use the following functions/methods/collections and i would like to do a feature test before using them. uhm.. how? or is there a better way to go about this? jQuery $ .fadeIn([duration]) .fadeOut([duration]) .attr(attributeName,value) .append(content) .each(function(index,Element)) .css(propertyName,value) .hover(handlerIn(eventObject),handlerOut(eventObject)) .stop([clearQueue],[jumpToEnd]) .parent() .eq(index) JavaScript setInterval(expression,timeout) clearInterval(timeoutId) setTimeout(expression,timeout) clearTimeout(timeoutId) i tried looking into jquery.support for the jquery ones, but i find myself running into conceptual problems with it, i.e. for fadein/fadeout, i (think i) should test for $.support.opacity, but that would be false in ie whereas ie6+ could still fairly render the fades. also am using jquery 1.2.6 coz that's enough for what i need. the support object is in 1.3. so i'm hoping to avoid dragging-in more unnecessary code if i can. i also worked with browser sniffing, no matter how frowned-upon. but that's also a bigger problem for me because of non-standard ua strings and spoofing and everything else am not aware of. so how do you guys think i should go about this? or should i even? is there a better way to go about making sure that i don't run code that'll eventually break the page? i've set it up to degrade into a css hover when javascript ain't there.. expertise needed. much appreciated, thanks guyz!

• Why won't VS2010 RC use my existing types when I add a service reference?

  I have a huge problem getting services references in VS2010 RC to use existing assemblies. Even though I have a class library with all the data contracts (classes marked with DataContract and properties with DataMember) that is shared between the service project and the consuming project (which is a class library), when I add a service reference, the data contracts are regenerated withing the service reference instead of using the existing types. When I was using VS2010 beta 2, this worked fine, and I have existing service references using the very same data contracts. But if I add a new service reference, or even update an old one, it won't use the existing types anymore. I have made a mini-test-solution, with one service, one data contract type and one console app as a consumer (all in the same solution), and there it seems to work, but that's no great comfort to me. Is there any way to see why it can't use the existing types? Edit to clearify. It works to generate the proxy classes with svcutil.exe, and point to the data contracts dll, like this: svcutil.exe http://localhost/MyService.svc /reference:[Path To DataContracts]\DataContracts.dll /n:*,MyProject.MyServiceReference /ct:System.Collections.Generic.List`1 The question is, what possible reason could there be for Visual Studio to generate its own datacontracts instead of using the existing ones even though the "reuse" checkbox is checked and the datacontracts assembly is referenced.

  Are there any libraries or techniques that simplify computing equations ? Take the following two examples: F = B * { [ a * b * sumOf (A / B ''' for all i ''' ) ] / [ sumOf(c * d * j) ] } where: F = cost from i to j B, a, b, c, d, j are all vectors in the format [ [zone_i, zone_j, cost_of_i_to_j], [..]] This should produce a vector F [ [1,2, F_1_2], ..., [i,j, F_i_j] ] T_ij = [ P_i * A_i * F_i_j] / [ SumOf [ Aj * F_i_j ] // j = 1 to j = n ] where: n is the number of zones T = vector [ [1, 2, A_1_2, P_1_2], ..., [i, j, A_i_j, P_i_j] ] F = vector [1, 2, F_1_2], ..., [i, j, F_i_j] so P_i would be the sum of all P_i_j for all j and Aj would be sum of all P_j for all i I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but perhaps a parser for these equations or methods to deal with multiple multiplications and products between vectors? To calculate some of the factors, for example A_j, this is what i use from collections import defaultdict A_j_dict = defaultdict(float) for A_item in TG: A_j_dict[A_item[1]] += A_item[3] Although this works fine, I really feel that it is a brute force / hacking method and unmaintainable in the case we want to add more variables or parameters. Are there any math equation parsers you'd recommend? Side Note: These equations are used to model travel. Currently I use excel to solve a lot of these equations; and I find that process to be daunting. I'd rather move to python where it pulls the data directly from our database (postgres) and outputs the results into the database. All that is figured out. • protobuf-net v2 alpha - problems with Dictionary<string,string>?

  I was using a version of v2 of protobuf-net from a few weeks ago quite successfully. (I want to use V2 due to the speed of the pre-compiled serializer running on the Compact Framework.) Everything worked great until I tried to serialize an object with a property of type Dictionary. I received the following error: {"No serializer defined for type: System.Collections.Generic.KeyValuePair`2[[System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089],[System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089]]"} It looked like there were recent changes made to improve Dictionary support, so I grabbed the latest code from today. After building the CF3.5 and FF3.5 dlls, I tried again. Now I get a different error "The model cannot be changed once frozen." If I remove the ProtoMember attribute from the Dictionary property all seems to work well. Has anyone succcessfully used a Dictionary in v2 of protobuf-net? Is this still too early of a release to be using? My speed tests showed v2 being twice as fast, does that seem accurate (validating my desire to use the less stable v2 pre-alpha bits.)

• Creating LINQ to SQL Data Models' Data Contexts with ASP.NET MVC

  I'm just getting started with ASP.NET MVC, mostly by reading ScottGu's tutorial. To create my database connections, I followed the steps he outlined, which were to create a LINQ-to-SQL dbml model, add in the database tables through the Server Explorer, and finally to create a DataContext class. That last part is the part I'm stuck on. In this class, I'm trying to create methods that work around the exposed data. Following the example in the tutorial, I created this: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; namespace MySite.Models { public partial class MyDataContext { public List<Post> GetPosts() { return Posts.ToList(); } public Post GetPostById(int id) { return Posts.Single(p => p.ID == id); } } } As you can see, I'm trying to use my Post data table. However, it doesn't recognize the "Posts" part of my code. What am I doing wrong? I have a feeling that my problem is related to my not adding the data tables correctly, but I'm not sure.   I am trying to use a dll in my c# program but I just cant seem to get it to work. I have made a test app shown below. The return value is 0, however it does not actually do what it is supposed to do. • Is there a java library / package analogous to <stdio.h>?

  I have been doing Java on and off for about 14 years, and almost nothing else the last 6 years or so. I really hate the java.io package -- its legion of subclasses and adapters. I do like exceptions, rather than having to always poll "errno" and the like, but I could surely live without declared exceptions. Is there anything that functions like the Unix/ANSI stdio.h routines in C? I know we will never be rid of java.io and its conventions until java itself is retired, as they have metastasized throughout the many frameworks that have accreted to java. That said, I would like something that works kind of like this (let's call it package javax.stdio): Have a main utility class, perhaps FileStar, that can read and write files (or pipes), either text or binary, either sequentially or random access, with constructors that mimic fopen() and popen(). This class should have a load of useful methods that do things like fread(), fwrite(), fgets(), fputs(), fseek(), and whatever else (fprintf()?). Methods that are incompatible with the open/construct mode simply throw up (just like some of the collections classes/methods do when restricted). Then, have a bunch of interfaces that suggest how you intend to use the stream once you have created it: Sequential, RandomAccess, ReadOnly, WriteOnly, Text, Binary, plus combinations of these that make sense. Perhaps even have methods to return the appropriate type-cast (interface), throwing up if you have asked for something incompatible. For extra flavor, skip the declared exceptions -- e.g. - javax.stdio.IOException extends RuntimeException. Is there an open source project like this floating around?

• NHibernate IQueryable Collection as Property of Root

  Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this. I have a root object that has a property that is a collection. For example : I have a Shelf object that has Books. // now public class Shelf { public ICollection<Book> Books {get; set;} } // want public class Shelf { public IQueryable<Book> Books {get;set;} } What I want to accomplish is to return a collection that is IQueryable so that I can run paging and filtering off of the collection directly from the the parent. var shelf = shelfRepository.Get(1); var filtered = from book in shelf.Books where book.Name == "The Great Gatsby" select book; I want to have that query executed specifically by NHibernate and not a get all to load a whole collection and then parse it in memory (which is what currently happens when I use ICollection). The reasoning behind this is that my collection could be huge, tens of thousands of records, and a get all query could bash my database. I would like to do this implicitly so that when NHibernate sees and IQueryable on my class it knows what to do. I have looked at NHibernates Linq provider and currently I am making the decision to take large collections and split them into their own repository so that I can make explicit calls for filtering and paging. Linq To SQL offers something similar to what I'm talking about.

• MVVM pattern: ViewModel updates after Model server roundtrip

  I have stateless services and anemic domain objects on server side. Model between server and client is POCO DTO. The client should become MVVM. The model could be graph of about 100 instances of 20 different classes. The client editor contains diverse tab-pages all of them live-connected to model/viewmodel. My problem is how to propagate changes after server round-trip nice way. It's quite easy to propagate changes from ViewModel to DTO. For way back it would be possible to throw away old DTO and replace it whole with new one, but it will cause lot of redrawing for lists/DataTemplates. I could gather the server side changes and transmit them to client side. But the names of fields changed would be domain/DTO specific, not ViewModel specific. And the mapping seems nontrivial to me. If I should do it imperative way after round-trip, it would break SOC/modularity of viewModels. I'm thinking about some kind of mapping rule engine, something like automappper or emit mapper. But it solves just very plain use-cases. I don't see how it would map/propagate/convert adding items to list or removal. How to identify instances in collections so it could merge values to existing instances. As well it should propagate validation/error info. Maybe I should implement INotifyPropertyChanged on DTO and try to replay server side events on it ? And then bind ViewModel to it ? Would binding solve the problems with collection merges nice way ? Is EventAgregator from PRISM useful for that ? Is there any event record-replay component ? Is there better client side pattern for architecture with server side logic ?
