  • Singleton by Jon Skeet clarification

    - by amutha
    public sealed class Singleton { Singleton() { } public static Singleton Instance { get { return Nested.instance; } } class Nested { // Explicit static constructor to tell C# compiler // not to mark type as beforefieldinit static Nested() { } internal static readonly Singleton instance = new Singleton(); } } I wish to implement Jon Skeet's Singleton pattern in my current application in C#. I have two doubts on the code 1) How is it possible to access the outer class inside nested class? I mean internal static readonly Singleton instance = new Singleton(); Is something called closure? 2) I did not get this comment // Explicit static constructor to tell C# compiler // not to mark type as beforefieldinit what does this comment suggest us?

  • Very simple application fails with "multiple target patterns" from Eclipse

    - by Paul Lammertsma
    Since I'm more comfortable using Eclipse, I thought I'd try converting my project from Visual Studio. Yesterday I tried a very simple little test. No matter what I try, make fails with "multiple target patterns". (This is similar to this unanswered question.) I have three files: Application.cpp: using namespace std; #include "Window.h" int main() { Window *win = new Window(); delete &win; return 0; } Window.h: #ifndef WINDOW_H_ #define WINDOW_H_ class Window { public: Window(); ~Window(); }; #endif Window.cpp: #include <cv.h> #include <highgui.h> #include "Window.h" const char* WINDOW_NAME = "MyApp"; Window::Window() { cvNamedWindow(WINDOW_NAME, CV_WINDOW_AUTOSIZE); cvResizeWindow(WINDOW_NAME, 200, 200); cvMoveWindow(WINDOW_NAME, 0, 0); int key = 0; while (true) { key = cvWaitKey(0); if (key==27 || cvGetWindowHandle(WINDOW_NAME)==0) { break; } } } Window::~Window() { cvDestroyWindow(WINDOW_NAME); } I have added the following paths to the compiler include path (-I): "$(OPENCV)/cv/include" "$(OPENCV)/cxcore/include" "$(OPENCV)/otherlibs/highgui" I have added the following libraries to the linker (-l): cv cxcore highgui And the following library search path (-L): "$(OPENCV)/lib/" Eclipse, the compiler and the linker all succeed in including the headers and libraries. I am using the GNU C/C++ compiler & linker from Cygwin. When compiling, I get the following make error: src/Window.d:1: *** multiple target patterns. Stop. Window.d contains: src/Window.d src/Window.o: ../src/Window.cpp \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxtypes.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxerror.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cvver.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.hpp \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvtypes.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.hpp \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvcompat.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/otherlibs/highgui/highgui.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h ../src/Constants.h \ ../src/Window.h C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxtypes.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxerror.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cvver.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.hpp: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvtypes.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.hpp: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvcompat.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/otherlibs/highgui/highgui.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h: ../src/Constants.h: ../src/Window.h: I tried removing all OpenCV headers from Window.d (from line 2 onwards), but the error remains.   • What is the purpose of both target API and minSDK

    - by Scott Ferguson
    Can somebody explain to me the difference between the project target and the minimum SDK? I want my app to run on Donut devices, and the APK I built with a target of 7 worked just fine. When I set an explicit minimum SDK in the Android manifest of 4 (1.6) the compiler bitched at me that the target exceeded the minimum. I reset the target to 4 only to see what would happen, and now I've got compiler errors. An example is the START_NOT_STICKY constant in android.app.Service. It doesn't exist in API level 4, but does exist in API level 7. This is also the case with Service.onStartCommand(). In API level 7 you need to explicity override this method, whereas in API level 4 you don't. So why does the app work in 1.6 despite all this? How could 1.6 know how to use SERVICE_NOT_STICKY when the associated API level doesn't know about it?

  • In Ada how do I initialise an array constant with a repeated number?

    - by mat_geek
    I need an array of 820 zeors for using with a mathematical function. In C I could just write the following and the compiler would fill the array: const float EMPTY_NUMBER_A[820] = { 0.0, }; However in Ada that isn't possible. I really don't want to hard code the 820 elements as 0.0. Is there a way to get the compiler to do it? type Number_A is array (1 .. 820) of Float; EMPTY_NUMBER_A : constant Number_A := something; Using Ada 95 and GNAT.

  • IEnumerable.GetEnumerator() and IEnumerable<T>.GetEnumerator()

    - by Dylan Lin
    Hi, In the .net framework, there's a generic IEnumerable<T> interface which inherits from the not-generic IEnumerable, and they both have a GetEnumerator() method. The only differents between these two GetEnumerator() is the return type. Now I have a similar design, but when I compile the code, the compiler said: MyInterface<T>.GetItem()' hides inherited member 'MyInterface.GetItem()'. Use the new keyword if hiding was intended. The MyInterface<T>.GetItem() returns a concrete type T, while MyInterface.GetItem() returns type System.Object. So I think if the BCL team guys compile the .net framework, they will get the same warning. I think having compiler warnings is not good, what do you think? And how can I solve this problem? I mean I want to get the concrete type T when calling the MyInterface<T>.GetItem() not just a instance of type System.Object. Thanks in advance! :-)

  • Using 32 bit g++ to build 64bit binaries on AIX

  • Java Builder pattern with Generic type bounds

    - by I82Much
    Hi all, I'm attempting to create a class with many parameters, using a Builder pattern rather than telescoping constructors. I'm doing this in the way described by Joshua Bloch's Effective Java, having private constructor on the enclosing class, and a public static Builder class. The Builder class ensures the object is in a consistent state before calling build(), at which point it delegates the construction of the enclosing object to the private constructor. Thus public class Foo { // Many variables private Foo(Builder b) { // Use all of b's variables to initialize self } public static final class Builder { public Builder(/* required variables */) { } public Builder var1(Var var) { // set it return this; } public Foo build() { return new Foo(this); } } } I then want to add type bounds to some of the variables, and thus need to parametrize the class definition. I want the bounds of the Foo class to be the same as that of the Builder class. public class Foo<Q extends Quantity> { private final Unit<Q> units; // Many variables private Foo(Builder<Q> b) { // Use all of b's variables to initialize self } public static final class Builder<Q extends Quantity> { private Unit<Q> units; public Builder(/* required variables */) { } public Builder units(Unit<Q> units) { this.units = units; return this; } public Foo build() { return new Foo<Q>(this); } } } This compiles fine, but the compiler is allowing me to do things I feel should be compiler errors. E.g. public static final Foo.Builder<Acceleration> x_Body_AccelField = new Foo.Builder<Acceleration>() .units(SI.METER) .build(); Here the units argument is not Unit<Acceleration> but Unit<Length>, but it is still accepted by the compiler. What am I doing wrong here? I want to ensure at compile time that the unit types match up correctly.

  • Get CLSID by PIA interface Type

    - by Charles
    How can I get the CLSID for a given interface within a Primary Interop Assembly? Here's what I'm talking about: // The c# compiler does some interesting magic. // The following code ... var app = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Application(); // ... is compiled like so (disassembled with Reflector): var app =((Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Application) Activator.CreateInstance(Type.GetTypeFromCLSID(new Guid("0006F03A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046")))); Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Application is an interface, and therefore it cannot be instantiated directly. What's interesting here is that c# lets you treat these COM interfaces as if there where classes that you can instantiate with the new keyword. What I want to know is, given the System.Type for a given interface, how can I get the CLSID? Note: I ultimately want to be able to create an instance given the interface's System.Type - I don't really care how. I'm assuming here that the easiest way to do this would be to get CLSID given the Type, just as the c# compiler does.

  • Automatic type conversion in Java?

    - by davr
    Is there a way to do automatic implicit type conversion in Java? For example, say I have two types, 'FooSet' and 'BarSet' which both are representations of a Set. It is easy to convert between the types, such that I have written two utility methods: /** Given a BarSet, returns a FooSet */ public FooSet barTOfoo(BarSet input) { /* ... */ } /** Given a FooSet, returns a BarSet */ public BarSet fooTObar(FooSet input) { /* ... */ } Now say there's a method like this that I want to call: public void doSomething(FooSet data) { /* .. */ } But all I have is a BarSet myBarSet...it means extra typing, like: doSomething(barTOfoo(myBarSet)); Is there a way to tell the compiler that certain types can automatically be cast to other types? I know this is possible in C++ with overloading, but I can't find a way in Java. I want to just be able to type: doSomething(myBarSet); And the compiler knows to automatically call barTOfoo()

  • PECL install fails

    - by James
    Hey! I have browsed every Google result, read all the forum posts about this error, but I cannot solve it. When using PECL install for anything, I always end up getting this error: checking whether the C compiler works... configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs. Everything else succeeds up to that point them bam! I'm using CentOS 4.3, PEAR is the latest stable version, GCC is a stable and recent version. Everything is working as it should, but the C compiler always seems to error. I've tried to make tmp have the right privilages for the operation by temporarily enabling it using: mount -o remount,exec,suid /tmp But that doesn't work. I've literally tried everything that has been suggested by to no avail. Any ideas?

  • SCJP question: Method ambiguous

    - by Markos Fragkakis
    Take a look at this code: public class Test { public static void main(String... args) { flipFlop("hello", new Integer(4), 2004); // flipFlop("hello", 10, 2004); // this works! } private static void flipFlop(String str, int i, Integer iRef) { System.out.println(str + " (String, int, Integer)"); } private static void flipFlop(String str, int i, int j) { System.out.println(str + " (String, int, int)"); } } The compiler gives an error that the invocation is ambiguous: Description Resource Path Location Type The method flipFlop(String, int, Integer) is ambiguous for the type Test Test.java scjp19 - inheritence/src line 3 Java Problem But if the commented-out line is used ti invoke flip-flop, the method is unambiguously invoked (the second one, because autoboxing comes after using the primitive itself). I would expect the compiler to see that the second argument will be unboxed one way or the other, and judge what method must be invoked depending on the third argument. Why does not this happen? What is the rationale?

  • LLVM: bitcode with llvm-gcc (mingw) for windows

    - by TheShow
    Hi, i'm currently building a small JIT compiler. For the language I need a runtime library for some special math functions. I think the best would be to compile the lib to bitcode and link it. The compiler should be integrated in a product and as of this, it must work under windows (VC10, 64bit). So is it possible to build the math lib with the mingw llvm-gcc build an link it later with the JITed Code? Or are there any problems regarding the portability of the bitcode build with llvm-gcc under mingw? If there are problems, what solution would you suggest?

    I upgraded my work box from Vista64 to Win7-64 by doing a format and reinstall. I kept backups of the project done in MS Visual Studio 2008 (Team). But now it won't compile. I am getting errors generated on lines in the MS created header files like "'_In_' not defined" etc. I know it is because I lost some compiler setting/directive. I was sure that the compiler settings would be in the project file; now I see that things like the include file directories, LIB files, etc. are not. [FYI: The project is a VB.NET GUI with VC++ DLL talking to a PIC24 micro over USB.] How do I most efficiently get my project back on the road to execution?

  • PHP text output in clauses

    - by arik-so
    Hello. I am working on a PHP project. There, I often use following syntax to output text in a cluase: if($boolean){ ?> output text <? }else{ ?> alternative <? } On my computer, this works perfectly well. I use XAMPP foer Mac OS X. But when I send the files to my coworker, these outputs often do not work and the compiler complains about having reached an unexpected $end of file. This occurs especially often when there is a tag in the output. We have to replace the means of output with echo. What's the reason for this strange behavior of the compiler? Is the above-mention syntax of outputting text wrong?

  • gcc returns error with nested class

    - by Nate
    Howdy, I am attempting to use the fully qualified name of my nested class as below, but the compiler is balking! template <class T> class Apple { //constructors, members, whatevers, etc... public: class Banana { public: Banana() { //etc... } //other constructors, members, etc... }; }; template <class K> class Carrot{ public: //etc... void problemFunction() { Apple<int>::Banana freshBanana = someVar.returnsABanana(); //line 85 giveMonkey(freshBanana); //line 86 } }; My issue is, the compiler says: Carrot.h:85: error: expected ';' before 'freshBanana' Carrot.h:86: error: 'freshBanana' was not declared in this scope I had thought that using the fully qualified name permitted me to access this nested class? It's probably going to smack me in the face, but what on earth am I not seeing here??

  • Visual Studio Express 2012 debug mode doesn't work

    - by user2350086
    I have a project in Visual Studio that I have been working on for a while, and I have used the debugger extensively. Recently I changed some settings and I have lost the ability to stop the program and step through code. I can't figure out what I had changed that might have affected this. If I put a breakpoint in my code and try to have the program stop there, it doesn't. The break point shows up white with a red outline. If I hover the mouse over it, it says "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No executable code of the debugger's target code type is associated with this line. Possible causes include: conditional compilation, compiler optimizations, or the target architecture of this line is not supported by the current debugger code type." I know for a fact that the program executes the code where the breakpoint is because I put the breakpoint in the beginning of the InitializeComponent method. The program displays the window fine, but does not stop at the breakpoint. Yes, I am running in debug mode. It seems as though there is a disconnect between the compiled code and the source code displayed. Does anyone know what that would be, or know which compiler settings I should check to re-enable debugging? • Is this an F# quotations bug?

    - by ControlFlow
    [<ReflectedDefinition>] let rec x = (fun() -> x + "abc") () The sample code with the recursive value above produces the following F# compiler error: error FS0432: [<ReflectedDefinition>] terms cannot contain uses of the prefix splice operator '%' I can't see any slicing operator usage in the code above, looks like a bug... :) Looks like this is the problem with the quotation via ReflectedDefinitionAttribute only, normal quotation works well: let quotation = <@ let rec x = (fun() -> x + "abc") () in x @> produces expected result with the hidden Lazy.create and Lazy.force usages: val quotation : Quotations.Expr<string> = LetRecursive ([(x, Lambda (unitVar, Application (Lambda (unitVar0, Call (None, String op_Addition[String,String,String](String, String), [Call (None, String Force[String](Lazy`1[System.String]), [x]), Value ("abc")])), Value (<null>)))), (x, Call (None, Lazy`1[String] Create[String](FSharpFunc`2[Unit,String]), [x])), (x, Call (None, String Force[String](Lazy`1[String]), [x]))], x) So the question is: is this an F# compiler bug or not?

  • C++ streams operator << and manipulators / formatters

    - by Ayman
    First, most of my recent work was Java. So even though I "know" C++, I do not want to write Java in C++. And C++ templates are one thing I will really miss when going back to Java. Now that this out of the way, if I want to do create a new stream formatter, say pic, that will have a single std::string parameter in it's constructor. I would like the user to be able to write something like: cout << pic("Date is 20../../..") << "100317" << endl; The output should be Date is 2010/03/17 How do I write the pic class? when the compiler sees the cout what are the underlying steps the compiler does?

  • HELP!! Delayed-job: Rake aborted! Can't modify frozen hash

    - by pmneve
    Too bad even the trace doesn't say which hash is involved. Sorry this post is long: am trying to provide enough context to be meaningful. Occurs intermittently when rake jobs:work is pulling a command out of delayed_jobs while my status observer is in the process of parsing a log file for detailed results of the previous delayed_job denizen. I have an observer class (in RAILS_ROOT/lib ) which listens for the events, makes a copy of them and calls the owner class ( in apps/models ) which then calls on the log parser (also in /lib) to do the actual work. (Should both of those classes, the observer and the parser be in app/models?) Am due to deliver this application in a few days and this is killing it (and me). Am using DirectoryWatcher to look for flag files that indicate the start and finish of the delayed_jobs. That is started at the end of environment.rb like this: require 'directory_watcher' $scriptStatusObserver = ScriptStatusObserver.new dirToWatch ="#{RAILS_ROOT}/tmp/flags" $directoryWatcher = DirectoryWatcher.new( dirToWatch ) $directoryWatcher.glob= "*.flg" $directoryWatcher.interval=(15) $directoryWatcher.add_observer( $scriptStatusObserver ) $directoryWatcher.persist=("#{RAILS_ROOT}/tmp/flags/dw_state.yml") $directoryWatcher.start at_exit { $directoryWatcher.stop } This code is outside of the run method (btw is that the best place or is inside the run better?) Here is the observer: require 'script_run' class ScriptStatusObserver def initialize @rcvdEvents = [] end def update( *events ) begin puts "#{LINE.to_s}: ScriptStatusObserver events: \n"+events.to_yaml cnt = 0 events.each do |e| if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) cnt = cnt + 1 @rcvdEvents << e end end ScriptRun.new.catch_up( @rcvdEvents ) if cnt > 0 @rcvdEvents.clear rescue puts $! end end end Here is ScriptRun (it attaches to an associative table built with has_many:through) require 'observer' class ScriptRun < ActiveRecord::Base set_table_name "scripts_runs" belongs_to :script belongs_to :run def parse( result ) parser = LogParser.new parser.parse(result) end def catch_up( events ) events.each do |e| typ = e.type path = e.path thisMatch = path.match(/flags\/(\d+)_(\d+)_([\d\.]+)_(\w+)\.flg/) run_id = thisMatch[1] script_id = thisMatch[2] ts = thisMatch[3] status = thisMatch[4] if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) end end end def status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) scriptrun = ScriptRun.find(:first, :conditions => [ "run_id = ? and script_id = ?", run_id.to_i, script_id.to_i ]) if scriptrun.kind_of?(ScriptRun) currStatus = scriptrun.status if not currStatus == 'completed' scriptrun.update_attribute(:status, status) if status == 'parse' flag = File.new(path) logSpec = flag.gets flag.close logName = File.basename(logSpec) logPath = logSpec.sub(logName, '') logName =~ /^(([\w_]+)_([\w]+)_(\d+))\.log$/ name = $1 basename = $2 runenv = $3 tsOrPid = $4 result = Result.new result.log_path = logPath result.basename = basename result.name = name result.script_id = script_id.to_i result.run_id = run_id.to_i if runenv == 'sit' runenv = 'SIT3348' end result.application_environment_id = ApplicationEnvironment.find(:first, :conditions => [ "nodename = ?", runenv]).id parse(result) if run_completed?( run_id ) myRun = Run.find(run_id.to_i) if myRun.kind_of?( Run ) myRun.update_attribute( :completed, Time.now.to_f ) end end end end else puts "#{__LINE__.to_s}: ScriptRun.status_update: ScriptRun not found for run #{run_id} script #{script_id} ts #{ts.to_s}" end File.delete(path) end def run_completed?( id ) scriptruns = ScriptRun.find(:all, :conditions = [ "run_id = ?", id.to_i] ) scriptruns.each do |sr| if not sr.status == 'completed' return false end end return true end end LogParser is too long even for this post but it reads the script log and pulls detailed information (counts and timings) out of the log and writes to a details table. • Implicit typing of arrays that implement interfaces

    - by Sir Psycho
    Hi, I was under the impression that the C# compiler will implicitly type an array based off a type that they can all be implicitly converted to. The compiler generates No best type found for implicitly-typed array public interface ISomething {} public interface ISomething2 {} public interface ISomething3 {} public class Foo : ISomething { } public class Bar : ISomething, ISomething2 { } public class Car : ISomething, ISomething3 { } void Main() { var obj1 = new Foo(); var obj2 = new Bar(); var obj3 = new Car(); var objects= new [] { obj1, obj2, obj3 }; } I know that the way to correct this is to declare the type like: new ISomething [] { obj1, ...} But I'm after an under the covers type help here :-) Thanks

Using Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition on an Intel Core Duo processor, the default setting for the precision control field is "01b", meaning double (53 bit) precision. I'm wondering -- why is the default not "11"b, or extended (64 bit) precision? (I know I can change it using _controlfp.)

  • Perl equivalent to Java's "throws" clause

    - by Konerak
    Is there a way in Perl to declare that a method can throw an error (or die)? EDIT: What interests me the most is a way to get the compiler or IDE to tell me I have an unchecked exception somewhere in my code. I always loved how in Java, a method could handle an Exception and/or throw it. The method signature allows to put "throws MyException", so a good IDE/compiler would know that if you use said method somewhere in your code, you'd have to check for the Exception or declare your function to "throws" the Exception further. I'm unable to find something alike in Perl. A collegue of mine wrote a method which "dies" on incorrect input, but I forget to eval-if($@) it... offcourse the error was only discovered while a user was running the application. (offcourse I doubt if there is any existing IDE that could find these kind of things for Perl, but atleast perl -cw should be able to, no?)
