  • New to MVVM - Best practices for seperating Data processing thread and UI Thread?

    Good day. I have started messing around with the MVVP pattern, and I am having some problems with UI responsiveness versus data processing. I have a program that tracks packages. Shipment and package entities are persisted in SQL database, and are displayed in a WPF view. Upon initial retrieval of the records, there is a noticeable pause before displaying the new shipments view, and I have not even implemented the code that counts shipments that are overdue/active yet (which will necessitate a tracking check via web service, and a lot of time). I have built this with the Ocean framework, and all appears to be doing well, except when I first started my foray into multi-threading. It broke, and it appeared to break something in Ocean... Ocean freaks out at this, so there must be a better way of doing it. I have not had the chance to figure out the usage of the SQL ORM thing in Ocean so I am using Entity Framework (perhaps one of these days i will look at NHibernate or something too). Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at a number of articles and they all have examples of simple uses. Some have mentioned the Dispatcher, but none really go very far into how it is used. Anyone know any good tutorials? Cory

  • capturing CMD batch file parameter list; write to file for later processing

    I have written a batch file that is launched as a post processing utility by a program. The batch file reads ~24 parameters supplied by the calling program, stores them into variables, and then writes them to various text files. Since the max input variable in CMD is %9, it's necessary to use the 'shift' command to repeatedly read and store these individually to named variables. Because the program outputs several similar batch files, the result is opening several CMD windows sequentially, assigning variables and writing data files. This ties up the calling program for too long. It occurs to me that I could free up the calling program much faster if maybe there's a way to write a very simple batch file that can write all the command parameters to a text file, where I can process them later. Basically, just grab the parameter list, write it and done. Q: Is there some way to treat an entire series of parameter data as one big text string and write it to one big variable... and then echo the whole big thing to one text file? Then later read the string into %n variables when there's no program waiting to resume? Parameter list is something like 25 - 30 words, less than 200 characters. Sample parameter list: "First Name" "Lastname" "123 Steet Name Way" "Cityname" ST 12345 1004968 06/01/2010 "Firstname+Lastname" 101738 "On Account" 20.67 xy-1z 1 8.95 3.00 1.39 0 0 239 8.95 Items in quotes are processed as string variables. List is space delimited. Any suggestions?

  • Is it possible to navigate to the parent node of a matched node during XSLT processing?

    I'm working with an OpenXML document, processing the main document part with some XSLT. I've selected a set of nodes via <xsl:template match="w:sdt"> </xsl:template> In most cases, I simply need to replace that matched node with something else, and that works fine. BUT, in some cases, I need to replace not the w:sdt node that matched, but the closest w:p ancestor node (ie the first paragraph node that contains the sdt node). The trick is that the condition used to decide one or the other is based on data derived from the attributes of the sdt node, so I can't use a typical xslt xpath filter. I'm trying to do something like this <xsl:template match="w:sdt"> <xsl:choose> <xsl:when test={first condition}> {apply whatever templating is necessary} </xsl:when> <xsl:when test={exception condition}> <!-- select the parent of the ancestor w:p nodes and apply the appropriate templates --> <xsl:apply-templates select="(ancestor::w:p)/.." mode="backout" /> </xsl:when> </xsl:choose> </xsl:template> <!-- by using "mode", only this template will be applied to those matching nodes from the apply-templates above --> <xsl:template match="node()" mode="backout"> {CUSTOM FORMAT the node appropriately} </xsl:template> This whole concept works, BUT no matter what I've tried, It always applies the formatting from the CUSTOM FORMAT template to the w:p node, NOT it's parent node. It's almost as if you can't reference a parent from a matching node. And maybe you can't, but I haven't found any docs that say you can't Any ideas?

  • How can I do something when a runloop event is done processing?

    I have some processing in my Cocoa app that sometimes ends up calling through a hierarchy of data to do a bunch of work as the result of an event. Each small piece creates and destroys some resources. I don't want those resources around most of the time, but I would like to find a smart way of creating them before all the work and killing them at the end. Short of making those buffers etc available globally from the "parent" or elsewhere, is there a way to know locally in some code when an event loop run has ended? Then I could create them if they're not there, and keep them until the run loop ends, reusing them for any subsequent calls before that time. EDIT: I'm not looking for suggestions on how to restructure my code, which I may do anyways. This issue just brought up the question for me of how to know when the runloop is done. If I were writing in, I dunno, Javascript, I'd use a setTimeout with zero to accomplish end-event cleanup. I suppose an NSTimer with an interval of zero might accomplish this too, but wondering if there's something cleaner. Thanks.

    I have setup a LEMP server following the guide Install Nginx/PHP-FPM on Fedora 20/19, CentOS/RHEL 6.5/5.10.   • Java multithreaded server - each connection returns data. Processing on main thread?

    I am writing a client with an integrated server that should wait indefinitely for new connections - and handle each on a Thread. I want to process the received byte array in a system wide available message handler on the main thread. However, currently the processing is obviously done on the client thread. I've looked at Futures, submit() of ExecutorService, but as I create my Client-Connections within the Server, the data would be returned to the Server thread. How can I return it from there onto the main thread (in a synchronized packet store maybe?) to process it without blocking the server?   • Cannot start session without errors in phpMyAdmin running Nginx with PHP-FPM

    Whenever I open phpMyAdmin from my VPS I get the following error: Cannot start session without errors, please check errors given in your PHP and/or webserver log file and configure your PHP installation properly. I have researched it, but cant seem to find a solution, I have done the following: Cleared cache and cookies Checked the php.ini (see below) Checked the logs (found nothing relevant) Given the correct permissions. [by sudo chown -R root:nginx /home/humza/pma] I am running Nginx with PHP-FPM, I have php-mysql and all that working fine but I can't get phpMyAdmin to work.     I am building an SSIS package that will contain dozens of Sequence tasks. Each Sequence task will contain three tasks. One to truncate a destination table and remove indexes on the table, another to import data from a source table, and a third to add back indexes to the destination table. My question is this. I currently have nine of these Sequences tasks built, and none are dependent on any of the others. When I execute the package, SSIS seems to do a pretty good job of determining which tasks in which Sequence to execute, which, by the way, appears to be quite random. As I continue adding more Sequences, should I attempt to be smarter about how SSIS should execute these Sequences, or is SSIS smart enough to do it itself? Thanks.

  • In Perl, how can I wait for threads to end in parallel?

    I have a Perl script that launches 2 threads,one for each processor. I need it to wait for a thread to end, if one thread ends a new one is spawned. It seems that the join method blocks the rest of the program, therefore the second thread can't end until everything the first thread does is done which sort of defeats its purpose. I tried the is_joinable method but that doesn't seem to do it either.   • How (and if) to write a single-consumer queue using the task parallel library?

    I've heard a bunch of podcasts recently about the TPL in .NET 4.0. Most of them describe background activities like downloading images or doing a computation, using tasks so that the work doesn't interfere with a GUI thread. Most of the code I work on has more of a multiple-producer / single-consumer flavor, where work items from multiple sources must be queued and then processed in order. One example would be logging, where log lines from multiple threads are sequentialized into a single queue for eventual writing to a file or database. All the records from any single source must remain in order, and records from the same moment in time should be "close" to each other in the eventual output. So multiple threads or tasks or whatever are all invoking a queuer: lock( _queue ) // or use a lock-free queue! { _queue.enqueue( some_work ); _queueSemaphore.Release(); } And a dedicated worker thread processes the queue: while( _queueSemaphore.WaitOne() ) { lock( _queue ) { some_work = _queue.dequeue(); } deal_with( some_work ); } It's always seemed reasonable to dedicate a worker thread for the consumer side of these tasks. Should I write future programs using some construct from the TPL instead? Which one? Why?

However there are often not the same number for both. What I am doing right now is running a WHILE loop in a WHILE loop. The outer loop is running fine but I think I am doing the inner loop wrong.   • Suspend not working after kernel update on an HP Envy14 1050

    I just update ubuntu 12.04 to the kernel 3.2.0-30 and together with it a lot of packeges in the system. I am running it on an HP Envy14 1050. When I first made a fresh install of the clean ubuntu 12.04 I had the problem that when restoring from suspend the screen was black, although some backlight was there. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. Now, after the update the black screen after suspend has reappeared but with no backlight at all and the led in the caps lock key blinking. The laptop is using a ATI radeon 5600 with the privative drivers. During the update process there was an error with depmod . You can see the /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log file at the end. UPDATE: suspend is not working at all. The problem is not when restoring from suspend, but when I try to suspend the system it gets blocked and the fan running. Only option is to press power button.
