• Is XSLT worth investing time in and are there any actual alternatives?

  I realize this has been a few other questions on this topic, and people are saying use your language of choice to manipulate the XML etc etc however, not quite fit my question exactly. Firstly, the scope of the project: We want to develop platform independent e-learning, currently, its a bunch of HTML pages but as they grow and develop they become hard to maintain. The idea: Generate up an XML file + Schema, then produce some XSLT files that process the XML into the eLearning modiles. XML to HTML via XSLT. Why: We would like the flexibilty to be able to easy reformat the content (I realize CSS is a viable alternative here) If we decide to alter the pages layout or functionality in anyway, im guessing altering the "shared" XSLT files would be easier than updating the HTML files. So far, we have about 30 modules, with up to 10-30 pages each Depending on some "parameters" we could output drastically different page layouts/structures, above and beyond what CSS can do Now, all this has to be platform independent, and to be able to run "offline" i.e. without a server powering the HTML Negatives I've read so far for XSLT: Overhead? Not exactly sure why...is it the compute power need to convert to HTML? Difficult to learn Better alternatives Now, what I would like to know exactly is: are there actually any viable alternatives for this "offline"? Am I going about it in the correct manner, do you guys have any advice or alternatives. Thanks!

  hello all, i am new to the filestream option in sql server 2008, but i have already understand how to open this option and how to create a table that allow you to save files. let say my table contains: id,name, filecontent i tried to insert an html file (that has hebrew chars/text in it) to this table. i'm writing in asp.net (c#), using visual studio 2008. but when i tried to read back the content , hebrew char becomes '?'. the actions i took were: 1. i read the file like this: // open the stream reader System.IO.StreamReader aFile = new StreamReader(FileName, System.Text.UTF8Encoding.UTF8); // reads the file to the end stream = aFile.ReadToEnd(); // closes the file aFile.Close(); return stream; // returns the stream i inserted the 'stream' to the filecontent column as binary data. i tried to do a 'select' to this column and the data did return (after i coverted it back to string) but hebrew chars become '?' how do i solve this problem ? what I should pay attention to ? thanks, gadym

• Load random swf object with jquery

  I'm working on a site that utilizes full screen background video. I have three flash videos I'd like to load into the page which would be displayed randomly on page refresh. I know you can achieve this through action script loading the movies into one main .swf, but I'm rubbish with Flash and am looking for an alternative solution. My search so far has uncovered a method using jquery. Unfortunately my attempts to implement it have failed. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself can tell me if this technique is valid or what I'm doing wrong.   I am coding a form generator. So far, so good, then I decided to give it a real test. I made a form with some nested each holding a few controls. I will post the HTML at the end. If you load it into a browser, it renders, but is obviously wrong. I had previously tested using the W3C validator and things were fine, but that was for non nested. • Enum exeeding the 65535 bytes limit of static initializer... what's best to do?

  I've started a rather large Enum of so called Descriptors that I've wanted to use as a reference list in my model. But now I've come across a compiler/VM limit the first time and so I'm looking for the best solution to handle this. Here is my error : The code for the static initializer is exceeding the 65535 bytes limit It is clear where this comes from - my Enum simply has far to much elements. But I need those elements - there is no way to reduce that set. Initialy I've planed to use a single Enum because I want to make sure that all elements within the Enum are unique. It is used in a Hibernate persistence context where the reference to the Enum is stored as String value in the database. So this must be unique! The content of my Enum can be devided into several groups of elements belonging together. But splitting the Enum would remove the unique safety I get during compile time. Or can this be achieved with multiple Enums in some way? My only current idea is to define some Interface called Descriptor and code several Enums implementing it. This way I hope to be able to use the Hibernate Enum mapping as if it were a single Enum. But I'm not even sure if this will work. And I loose unique safety. Any ideas how to handle that case?

• UIButton stops responding after going into landscape mode - iPhone

  I've been trying different things the last few days and I've run out of ideas so I'm looking for help. The situation is that I'm displaying my in-app purchasing store view after the user clicks a button. Button pressed, view is displayed. The store shows fine. Inside this view, I have a few labels with descriptions of the product, and then below them I have the price and a Buy button which triggers the in-app purchase. Problem is when I rotate the phone to landscape, that Buy button no longer responds, weird. Works fine in portrait. The behavior in landscape when the I touch the button is nothing. It doesn't appear to press down and be selected or anything, just not responding to my touches. But then when I rotate back to portrait or even upside down portrait, it works fine. Here is the rough structure of my view in IB, all the rotating and layout is setup in IB. I set the autoresizing in IB so that everything looks ok in landscape and the Buy button expands horizontally a little bit. The only layout manipulation I do in my code is after loading, I set the content size of the scroll view. File Owner with view set to the scrollView / scrollView ----/ view --------/ label --------/ label --------/ label --------/ label --------/ label --------/ label --------/ label --------/ label --------/ uibutton (Buy) After orientation changes I printed out the userInteractionEnabled property of the scrollView and the button, and they were both TRUE at all orientations. Ideas? Or maybe some other way of displaying a buy button that won't be nonfunctional? I've already begun a branch that plays with a toolbar and placing the buy button there, but I can't seem to get the bar to stay in place while scrolling.

• Looping through Markers with Google Maps API v3 Problem

  I'm not sure why this isn't working. I don't have any errors, but what happens is, no matter what marker I click on, it clicks the 3rd one (which is the last one out of 4 markers. Array starts at 0, obviously) and shows the number "3", which is correct for THAT one, but I'm not clicking that one. • google maps call within a For Loop not returning distance

  Hi, I am calling google maps within a for loop in my javascript as I have mulitple routes that need to be costed separately based on distances. Everything works great except that the distance is only returned for one of the routes. I have a feeling that it is something to do with the way I have the items declared within the ajax call for the maps. • Request size limitation when using MultipartHttpServletRequest of Spring 3.0

  I'd like to know what is the size limitation if I upload list of files in one client's form submition using HTTP multipart content type. On the server side I am using Spring's MultipartHttpServletRequest to handle the request. mM questions: Is there should be different file size limitation and total request size limitation or file size is the only limitation and the request is capable of uploading 100s of files as lonng as they are not too large. Doest the Spring request wrapper read the complete request and store it in the JAVA heap memory or it store temporaray files of it to be able to use big quota. Is the use of reading the httpservlet request in streaming would change the size limitation than using complete http request read at-once by the application server. What is the bottleneck of this process - Java heap size, the quota of the filesystem on which my web-server runs, the maximum allowed BLOB size that the DataBase in which I am gonna save the file alows? or Spring internal limitations? Within that, I plan to place a div that stretches to the height and width of the viewport and has black background colour at 50% opacity. I've set the div to be 100% width and height.   Hi, i'm having a problem with dynamically loaded forms - instead of using the action attribute of the newly loaded form, my jquery code is still using the action attribute of the first form loaded.   In the following code, the call to myChild.bar() results in an exception because myChild is null. myParent is a valid object. What I don't understand is why myChild has not been created yet. • How to put JFrame into existing JPanel in Java Swing?

  I have an open-source java swing application like this: http://i47.tinypic.com/dff4f7.jpg You can see in the screenshot, there is a JPanel divided into two area, left and right area. The left area has many text links. When I click the SLA Criteria link, it will pop-up the SLA Criteria window. The pop-up window is JFrame object. Now, I'm trying to put the pop-up window into right area of the JPanel, so that means no pop-up window anymore, i.e. when I click the SLA Criteria link, its contents will be displayed at the right area of the JPanel. The existing content of the right area of JPanel will not be used anymore. The example illustration (note: it's made and edited using image editor, this is not the real screenshot of working application) is like this: http://i48.tinypic.com/5vrxaa.jpg So, I would like to know is there a way to put JFrame into JPanel? I'm thinking of using JInternalFrame, is it possible? Or is there another way? • Extremely CPU Intensive Alarm Clock

  For some reason my program, a console alarm clock I made for laughs and practice, is extremely CPU intensive. It consumes about 2mB RAM, which is already quite a bit for such a small program, but it devastates my CPU with over 50% resources at times. Most of the time my program is doing nothing except counting down the seconds, so I guess this part of my program is the one that's causing so much strain on my CPU, though I don't know why. If it is so, could you please recommend a way of making it less, or perhaps a library to use instead if the problem can't be easily solved? /* The wait function waits exactly one second before returning to the * * called function. */ void wait( const int &seconds ) { clock_t endwait; // Type needed to compare with clock() endwait = clock() + ( seconds * CLOCKS_PER_SEC ); while( clock() < endwait ) {} // Nothing need be done here. } In case anybody browses CPlusPlus.com, this is a genuine copy/paste of the clock() function they have written as an example for clock(). Much why the comment //Nothing need be done here is so lackluster. I'm not entirely sure what exactly clock() does yet. The rest of the program calls two other functions that only activate every sixty seconds, otherwise returning to the caller and counting down another second, so I don't think that's too CPU intensive- though I wouldn't know, this is my first attempt at optimizing code. The first function is a console clear using system("cls") which, I know, is really, really slow and not a good idea. I will be changing that post-haste, but, since it only activates every 60 seconds and there is a noticeable lag-spike, I know this isn't the problem most of the time. The second function re-writes the content of the screen with the updated remaining time also only every sixty seconds. I will edit in the function that calls wait, clearScreen and display if it's clear that this function is not the problem. I already tried to reference most variables so they are not copied, as well as avoid endl as I heard that it's a little slow compared to \n.

• Java conditional compilation: how to prevent code chunks to be compiled?

  My project requires Java 1.6 for compilation and running. Now I have a requirement to make it working with Java 1.5 (from the marketing side). I want to replace method body (return type and arguments remain the same) to make it compiling with Java 1.5 without errors. Details: I have an utility class called OS which encapsulates all OS-specific things. It has a method public static void openFile(java.io.File file) throws java.io.IOException { // open the file using java.awt.Desktop ... } to open files like with double-click (start Windows command or open Mac OS X command equivalent). Since it cannot be compiled with Java 1.5, I want to exclude it during compilation and replace by another method which calls run32dll for Windows or open for Mac OS X using Runtime.exec. Question: How can I do that? Can annotations help here? Note: I use ant, and I can make two java files OS4J5.java and OS4J6.java which will contain the OS class with the desired code for Java 1.5 and 1.6 and copy one of them to OS.java before compiling (or an ugly way - replace the content of OS.java conditionally depending on java version) but I don't want to do that, if there is another way. Elaborating more: in C I could use ifdef, ifndef, in Python there is no compilation and I could check a feature using hasattr or something else, in Common Lisp I could use #+feature. Is there something similar for Java? Found this post but it doesn't seem to be helpful. Any help is greatly appreciated. kh.
