  • How should I set up protection for the database against sql injection when all the php scripts are flawed?

    - by Tchalvak
    I've inherited a php web app that is very insecure, with a history of sql injection. I can't fix the scripts immediately, I rather need them to be running to have the website running, and there are too many php scripts to deal with from the php end first. I do, however, have full control over the server and the software on the server, including full control over the mysql database and it's users. Let's estimate it at something like 300 scripts overall, 40 semi-private scripts, and 20 private/secure scripts. So my question is how best to go about securing the data, with the implicit assumption that sql injection from the php side (e.g. somewhere in that list of 300 scripts) is inevitable? My first-draft plan is to create multiple tiers of different permissioned users in the mysql database. In this way I can secure the data & scripts in most need of securing first ("private/secure" category), then the second tier of database tables & scripts ("semi-private"), and finally deal with the security of the rest of the php app overall (with the result of finally securing the database tables that essentially deal with "public" information, e.g. stuff that even just viewing the homepage requires). So, 3 database users (public, semi-private, and secure), with a different user connecting for each of three different groups of scripts (the secure scripts, the semi-private scripts, and the public scripts). In this way, I can prevent all access to "secure" from "public" or from "semi-private", and to "semi-private" from "public". Are there other alternatives that I should look into? If a tiered access system is the way to go, what approaches are best?

  • Android: database reading problem throws exception

    - by Vamsi
    Hi, i am having this problem with the android database. I adopted the DBAdapter file the NotepadAdv3 example from the google android page. DBAdapter.java public class DBAdapter { private static final String TAG = "DBAdapter"; private static final String DATABASE_NAME = "PasswordDb"; private static final String DATABASE_TABLE = "myuserdata"; private static final String DATABASE_USERKEY = "myuserkey"; private static final int DATABASE_VERSION = 2; public static final String KEY_USERKEY = "userkey"; public static final String KEY_TITLE = "title"; public static final String KEY_DATA = "data"; public static final String KEY_ROWID = "_id"; private final Context mContext; private DatabaseHelper mDbHelper; private SQLiteDatabase mDb; private static final String DB_CREATE_KEY = "create table " + DATABASE_USERKEY + " (" + "userkey text not null" +");"; private static final String DB_CREATE_DATA = "create table " + DATABASE_TABLE + " (" + "_id integer primary key autoincrement, " + "title text not null" + "data text" +");"; private static class DatabaseHelper extends SQLiteOpenHelper { DatabaseHelper(Context context) { super(context, DATABASE_NAME, null, DATABASE_VERSION); } @Override public void onCreate(SQLiteDatabase db) { db.execSQL(DB_CREATE_KEY); db.execSQL(DB_CREATE_DATA); } @Override public void onUpgrade(SQLiteDatabase db, int oldVersion, int newVersion) { Log.w(TAG, "Upgrading database from version " + oldVersion + " to " + newVersion + ", which will destroy all old data"); db.execSQL("DROP TABLE IF EXISTS myuserkey"); db.execSQL("DROP TABLE IF EXISTS myuserdata"); onCreate(db); } } public DBAdapter(Context ctx) { this.mContext = ctx; } public DBAdapter Open() throws SQLException{ try { mDbHelper = new DatabaseHelper(mContext); } catch(Exception e){ Log.e(TAG, e.toString()); } mDb = mDbHelper.getWritableDatabase(); return this; } public void close(){ mDbHelper.close(); } public Long storeKey(String userKey){ ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_USERKEY, userKey); try { mDb.delete(DATABASE_USERKEY, "1=1", null); } catch(Exception e) { Log.e(TAG, e.toString()); } return mDb.insert(DATABASE_USERKEY, null, initialValues); } public String retrieveKey() { final Cursor c; try { c = mDb.query(DATABASE_USERKEY, new String[] { KEY_USERKEY}, null, null, null, null, null); }catch(Exception e){ Log.e(TAG, e.toString()); return ""; } if(c.moveToFirst()){ return c.getString(0); } else{ Log.d(TAG, "UserKey Empty"); } return ""; } //not including any function related to "myuserdata" table } Class1.java { mUserKey = mDbHelper.retrieveKey(); mDbHelper.storeKey(Key); } the error that i am receiving is from Log.e(TAG, e.toString()) in the methods retrieveKey() and storeKey() "no such table: myuserkey: , while compiling: SELECT userkey FROM myuserkey"

  • WPF- Why can't my custom textbox be selected?

    - by highone
    I have this custom textbox that I am working on and I can use it in xaml, but when I run my app I cannot select it or type in it. Here is my code: public class ModdedTextBox : TextBox { private bool selectionStartChangeFromUI; private bool selectionLengthChangeFromUI; private bool selectedTextChangeFromUI; static ModdedTextBox() { DefaultStyleKeyProperty.OverrideMetadata(typeof(ModdedTextBox), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata(typeof(ModdedTextBox))); //this.SelectionChanged += this.OnSelectionChanged; //PropertyDescriptor VerticalOffsetProperty = TypeDescriptor.GetProperties(typeof(ModdedTextBox))["VerticalOffset"]; //VerticalOffsetProperty.AddValueChanged(this, this.OnVerticalOffsetChanged); } public static readonly DependencyProperty BindableSelectionStartProperty = DependencyProperty.Register( "BindableSelectionStart", typeof(int), typeof(ModdedTextBox), new PropertyMetadata(OnBindableSelectionStartChanged)); public static readonly DependencyProperty BindableSelectionLengthProperty = DependencyProperty.Register( "BindableSelectionLength", typeof(int), typeof(ModdedTextBox), new PropertyMetadata(OnBindableSelectionLengthChanged)); public static readonly DependencyProperty BindableSelectedTextProperty = DependencyProperty.Register( "BindableSelectedText", typeof(string), typeof(ModdedTextBox), new PropertyMetadata(OnBindableSelectedTextChanged)); public static readonly DependencyProperty DelayedTextProperty = DependencyProperty.Register( "DelayedText", typeof(string), typeof(ModdedTextBox), new PropertyMetadata(OnDelayedTextChanged)); public int BindableSelectionStart { get { return (int)this.GetValue(BindableSelectionStartProperty); } set { this.SetValue(BindableSelectionStartProperty, value); } } public int BindableSelectionLength { get { return (int)this.GetValue(BindableSelectionLengthProperty); } set { this.SetValue(BindableSelectionLengthProperty, value); } } public string BindableSelectedText { get { return (string)this.GetValue(BindableSelectedTextProperty); } private set { this.SetValue(BindableSelectedTextProperty, value); } } public string DelayedText { get { return (string)this.GetValue(DelayedTextProperty); } private set { this.SetValue(DelayedTextProperty, value); } } private static void OnBindableSelectionStartChanged(DependencyObject dependencyObject, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs args) { var textBox = dependencyObject as ModdedTextBox; if (!textBox.selectionStartChangeFromUI) { int newValue = (int)args.NewValue; textBox.SelectionStart = newValue; } else { textBox.selectionStartChangeFromUI = false; } } private static void OnBindableSelectionLengthChanged(DependencyObject dependencyObject, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs args) { var textBox = dependencyObject as ModdedTextBox; if (!textBox.selectionLengthChangeFromUI) { int newValue = (int)args.NewValue; textBox.SelectionLength = newValue; } else { textBox.selectionLengthChangeFromUI = false; } } private static void OnBindableSelectedTextChanged(DependencyObject dependencyObject, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs args) { var textBox = dependencyObject as ModdedTextBox; if (!textBox.selectedTextChangeFromUI) { string newValue = (string)args.NewValue; textBox.BindableSelectedText = newValue; } else { textBox.selectedTextChangeFromUI = false; } } private static void OnDelayedTextChanged(DependencyObject dependencyObject, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs args) { } private void OnSelectionChanged(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { if (this.BindableSelectionStart != this.SelectionStart) { this.selectionStartChangeFromUI = true; this.BindableSelectionStart = this.SelectionStart; } if (this.BindableSelectionLength != this.SelectionLength) { this.selectionLengthChangeFromUI = true; this.BindableSelectionLength = this.SelectionLength; } if (this.BindableSelectedText != this.SelectedText) { this.selectedTextChangeFromUI = true; this.BindableSelectedText = this.SelectedText; } } private void OnVerticalOffsetChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show("hello the vertical offset works"); } }

  • Continuous Form, how to add/update records with external connection

    - by Mohgeroth
    EDIT After some more research I found that I cannot use a continuous form with an unbound form since it can only reference a single record at a time. Given that I've altered my question... I have a sample form that pulls out data to enter into a table as an intermediary. Initially the form is unbound and I open connections to two main recordsets. I set the listbox's recordset equal to one of them and the forms recordset equal to the other. The problem is that I cannot add records or update existing ones. Attempting to key into the fields does nothing almost as if the field was locked (Which it is not). Settings of the recordsets are OpenKeyset and LockPessimistic. Tables are not linked, they come from an outside access database seperate from this project and must remain that way. I am using an adodb connection to get the data. Could the separation of the data from the project be causing this? Sample Code from the Form Option Compare Database Option Explicit Private conn As CRobbers_Connections Private exception As CError_Trapping Private mClient_Translations As ADODB.Recordset Private mUnmatched_Clients As ADODB.Recordset Private mExcluded_Clients As ADODB.Recordset //Construction Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer) Set conn = New CRobbers_Connections Set exception = New CError_Trapping Set mClient_Translations = New ADODB.Recordset Set mUnmatched_Clients = New ADODB.Recordset Set mExcluded_Clients = New ADODB.Recordset mClient_Translations.Open "SELECT * FROM Client_Translation" _ , conn.RBRS_Conn, adOpenKeyset, adLockPessimistic mUnmatched_Clients.Open "SELECT DISTINCT(a.Client) as Client" _ & " FROM Master_Projections a " _ & " WHERE Client NOT IN ( " _ & " SELECT DISTINCT ClientID " _ & " FROM Client_Translation);" _ , conn.RBRS_Conn, adOpenKeyset, adLockPessimistic mExcluded_Clients.Open "SELECT * FROM Clients_Excluded" _ , conn.RBRS_Conn, adOpenKeyset, adLockPessimistic End Sub //Add new record to the client translations Private Sub cmdAddNew_Click() If lstUnconfirmed <> "" Then AddRecord End If End Sub Private Function AddRecord() With mClient_Translations .AddNew .Fields("ClientID") = Me.lstUnconfirmed .Fields("ClientAbbr") = Me.txtTmpShort .Fields("ClientName") = Me.txtTmpLong .Update End With UpdateRecords End Function Private Function UpdateRecords() Me.lstUnconfirmed.Requery End Function //Load events (After construction) Private Sub Form_Load() Set lstUnconfirmed.Recordset = mUnmatched_Clients //Link recordset into listbox Set Me.Recordset = mClient_Translations End Sub //Destruction method Private Sub Form_Close() Set conn = Nothing Set exception = Nothing Set lstUnconfirmed.Recordset = Nothing Set Me.Recordset = Nothing Set mUnmatched_Clients = Nothing Set mExcluded_Clients = Nothing Set mClient_Translations = Nothing End Sub

  • Simple RSA encryption (Java)

    - by jake blue
    This is simply for fun. This will not be used for any actual encryption. I'm only first year comp sci student and love cryptography. This took a long time to get working. At approximately N = 18, it begins breaking down. It won't encrypt messages properly after that point. I'm not sure why. Any insights? I'd also appreciate any links you could provide me to tutorials or interesting reading about Cryptography. import java.math.BigInteger; import java.security.SecureRandom; /** * Cryptography. * * Generates public and private keys used in encryption and * decryption * */ public class RSA { private final static BigInteger one = new BigInteger("1"); private final static SecureRandom random = new SecureRandom(); // prime numbers private BigInteger p; private BigInteger q; // modulus private BigInteger n; // totient private BigInteger t; // public key private BigInteger e; // private key private BigInteger d; private String cipherText; /** * Constructor for objects of class RSA */ public RSA(int N) { p = BigInteger.probablePrime(N/2, random); q = BigInteger.probablePrime(N/2, random); // initialising modulus n = p.multiply(q); // initialising t by euclid's totient function (p-1)(q-1) t = (p.subtract(one)).multiply(q.subtract(one)); // initialising public key ~ 65537 is common public key e = new BigInteger("65537"); } public int generatePrivateKey() { d = e.modInverse(t); return d.intValue(); } public String encrypt(String plainText) { String encrypted = ""; int j = 0; for(int i = 0; i < plainText.length(); i++){ char m = plainText.charAt(i); BigInteger bi1 = BigInteger.valueOf(m); BigInteger bi2 = bi1.modPow(e, n); j = bi2.intValue(); m = (char) j; encrypted += m; } cipherText = encrypted; return encrypted; } public String decrypt() { String decrypted = ""; int j = 0; for(int i = 0; i < cipherText.length(); i++){ char c = cipherText.charAt(i); BigInteger bi1 = BigInteger.valueOf(c); BigInteger bi2 = bi1.modPow(d, n); j = bi2.intValue(); c = (char) j; decrypted += c; } return decrypted; } }

  • How Do you Declare a Dependancy Property in VB.Net 3.0

    - by discwiz
    My company is stuck on .Net 3.0. The task I am trying to tackle is simple, I need to bind the IsChecked property of the CheckBoxResolvesCEDAR to the CompletesCEDARWork in my Audio class. The more I read about this it appears that I have to declare CompletesCEDARWork as dependancy propert, but I can not find a good example of how this is done. I found this example, but when I pasted into my code I get an "is not defined" error for GetValue and I have not successfully figure out what MyCode is supposed to represent. Any help/examples would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Public Shared ReadOnly IsSpinningProperty As DependencyProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("IsSpinning", GetType(Boolean), GetType(MyCode)) Public Property IsSpinning() As Boolean Get Return CBool(GetValue(IsSpinningProperty)) End Get Set(ByVal value As Boolean) SetValue(IsSpinningProperty, value) End Set End Property Here is my slimed down Audio Class as it stands now. • How come Java doesn't accept my LinkedList in a Generic, but accepts its own?

    - by master chief
    For a class assignment, we can't use any of the languages bultin types, so I'm stuck with my own list. Anyway, here's the situation: public class CrazyStructure <T extends Comparable<? super T>> { MyLinkedList<MyTree<T>> trees; //error: type parameter MyTree is not within its bound } However: public class CrazyStructure <T extends Comparable<? super T>> { LinkedList<MyTree<T>> trees; } Works. MyTree impleements the Comparable interface, but MyLinkedList doesn't. However, Java's LinkedList doesn't implement it either, according to this. So what's the problem and how do I fix it? MyLinkedList: public class MyLinkedList<T extends Comparable<? super T>> { private class Node<T> { private Node<T> next; private T data; protected Node(); protected Node(final T value); } Node<T> firstNode; public MyLinkedList(); public MyLinkedList(T value); //calls node1.value.compareTo(node2.value) private int compareElements(final Node<T> node1, final Node<T> node2); public void insert(T value); public void remove(T value); } MyTree: public class LeftistTree<T extends Comparable<? super T>> implements Comparable { private class Node<T> { private Node<T> left, right; private T data; private int dist; protected Node(); protected Node(final T value); } private Node<T> root; public LeftistTree(); public LeftistTree(final T value); public Node getRoot(); //calls node1.value.compareTo(node2.value) private int compareElements(final Node node1, final Node node2); private Node<T> merge(Node node1, Node node2); public void insert(final T value); public T extractMin(); public int compareTo(final Object param); }

  • Cutting down repeating code in c# Class

    - by Tom Gullen
    This is a wrapper for an API I'm working on, am I doing it sort of right? I'm not particularly fond of all the repeating code in the constructor, if someone can show me if I can reduce that it would be very helpful! public class WebWizForumVersion { // Properties of returned data public string Software { get; private set; } public string Version { get; private set; } public string APIVersion { get; private set; } public string Copyright { get; private set; } public string BoardName { get; private set; } public string URL { get; private set; } public string Email { get; private set; } public string Database { get; private set; } public string InstallationID { get; private set; } public bool NewsPad { get; private set; } public string NewsPadURL { get; private set; } public WebWizForumVersion(XmlReader Data) { try { Data.ReadToFollowing("Software"); this.Software = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("Version"); this.Version = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("ApiVersion"); this.APIVersion = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("Copyright"); this.Copyright = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("BoardName"); this.BoardName = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("URL"); this.URL = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("Email"); this.Email = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("Database"); this.Database = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("InstallID"); this.InstallationID = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); Data.ReadToFollowing("NewsPad"); this.NewsPad = bool.Parse(Data.ReadElementContentAsString()); Data.ReadToFollowing("NewsPadURL"); this.NewsPadURL = Data.ReadElementContentAsString(); } catch (Exception e) { } } }

  • Endless terrain in jMonkey using TerrainGrid fails to render

    - by nightcrawler23
    I have started to learn game development using jMonkey engine. I am able to create single tile of terrain using TerrainQuad but as the next step I'm stuck at making it infinite. I have gone through the wiki and want to use the TerrainGrid class but my code does not seem to work. I have looked around on the web and searched other forums but cannot find any other code example to help. I believe in the below code, ImageTileLoader returns an image which is the heightmap for that tile. I have modified it to return the same image every time. But all I see is a black window. The Namer method is not even called. terrain = new TerrainGrid("terrain", patchSize, 513, new ImageTileLoader(assetManager, new Namer() { public String getName(int x, int y) { //return "Scenes/TerrainMountains/terrain_" + x + "_" + y + ".png"; System.out.println("X = " + x + ", Y = " + y); return "Textures/heightmap.png"; } })); These are my sources: jMonkeyEngine 3 Tutorial (10) - Hello Terrain TerrainGridTest.java ImageTileLoader This is the result when i use TerrainQuad: , My full code: // Sample 10 - How to create fast-rendering terrains from heightmaps, and how to // use texture splatting to make the terrain look good. public class HelloTerrain extends SimpleApplication { private TerrainQuad terrain; Material mat_terrain; private float grassScale = 64; private float dirtScale = 32; private float rockScale = 64; public static void main(String[] args) { HelloTerrain app = new HelloTerrain(); app.start(); } private FractalSum base; private PerturbFilter perturb; private OptimizedErode therm; private SmoothFilter smooth; private IterativeFilter iterate; @Override public void simpleInitApp() { flyCam.setMoveSpeed(200); initMaterial(); AbstractHeightMap heightmap = null; Texture heightMapImage = assetManager.loadTexture("Textures/heightmap.png"); heightmap = new ImageBasedHeightMap(heightMapImage.getImage()); heightmap.load(); int patchSize = 65; //terrain = new TerrainQuad("my terrain", patchSize, 513, heightmap.getHeightMap()); // * This Works but below doesnt work* terrain = new TerrainGrid("terrain", patchSize, 513, new ImageTileLoader(assetManager, new Namer() { public String getName(int x, int y) { //return "Scenes/TerrainMountains/terrain_" + x + "_" + y + ".png"; System.out.println("X = " + x + ", Y = " + y); return "Textures/heightmap.png"; // set to return the sme hieghtmap image. } })); terrain.setMaterial(mat_terrain); terrain.setLocalTranslation(0,-100, 0); terrain.setLocalScale(2f, 1f, 2f); rootNode.attachChild(terrain); TerrainLodControl control = new TerrainLodControl(terrain, getCamera()); terrain.addControl(control); } public void initMaterial() { // TERRAIN TEXTURE material this.mat_terrain = new Material(this.assetManager, "Common/MatDefs/Terrain/HeightBasedTerrain.j3md"); // GRASS texture Texture grass = this.assetManager.loadTexture("Textures/white.png"); grass.setWrap(WrapMode.Repeat); this.mat_terrain.setTexture("region1ColorMap", grass); this.mat_terrain.setVector3("region1", new Vector3f(-10, 0, this.grassScale)); // DIRT texture Texture dirt = this.assetManager.loadTexture("Textures/white.png"); dirt.setWrap(WrapMode.Repeat); this.mat_terrain.setTexture("region2ColorMap", dirt); this.mat_terrain.setVector3("region2", new Vector3f(0, 900, this.dirtScale)); Texture building = this.assetManager.loadTexture("Textures/building.png"); building.setWrap(WrapMode.Repeat); this.mat_terrain.setTexture("slopeColorMap", building); this.mat_terrain.setFloat("slopeTileFactor", 32); this.mat_terrain.setFloat("terrainSize", 513); } }

  • Improvements to Joshua Bloch's Builder Design Pattern?

    - by Jason Fotinatos
    Back in 2007, I read an article about Joshua Blochs take on the "builder pattern" and how it could be modified to improve the overuse of constructors and setters, especially when an object has a large number of properties, most of which are optional. A brief summary of this design pattern is articled here [http://rwhansen.blogspot.com/2007/07/theres-builder-pattern-that-joshua.html]. I liked the idea, and have been using it since. The problem with it, while it is very clean and nice to use from the client perspective, implementing it can be a pain in the bum! There are so many different places in the object where a single property is reference, and thus creating the object, and adding a new property takes a lot of time. So...I had an idea. First, an example object in Joshua Bloch's style: Josh Bloch Style: public class OptionsJoshBlochStyle { private final String option1; private final int option2; // ...other options here <<<< public String getOption1() { return option1; } public int getOption2() { return option2; } public static class Builder { private String option1; private int option2; // other options here <<<<< public Builder option1(String option1) { this.option1 = option1; return this; } public Builder option2(int option2) { this.option2 = option2; return this; } public OptionsJoshBlochStyle build() { return new OptionsJoshBlochStyle(this); } } private OptionsJoshBlochStyle(Builder builder) { this.option1 = builder.option1; this.option2 = builder.option2; // other options here <<<<<< } public static void main(String[] args) { OptionsJoshBlochStyle optionsVariation1 = new OptionsJoshBlochStyle.Builder().option1("firefox").option2(1).build(); OptionsJoshBlochStyle optionsVariation2 = new OptionsJoshBlochStyle.Builder().option1("chrome").option2(2).build(); } } Now my "improved" version: public class Options { // note that these are not final private String option1; private int option2; // ...other options here public String getOption1() { return option1; } public int getOption2() { return option2; } public static class Builder { private final Options options = new Options(); public Builder option1(String option1) { this.options.option1 = option1; return this; } public Builder option2(int option2) { this.options.option2 = option2; return this; } public Options build() { return options; } } private Options() { } public static void main(String[] args) { Options optionsVariation1 = new Options.Builder().option1("firefox").option2(1).build(); Options optionsVariation2 = new Options.Builder().option1("chrome").option2(2).build(); } } As you can see in my "improved version", there are 2 less places in which we need to add code about any addition properties (or options, in this case)! The only negative that I can see is that the instance variables of the outer class are not able to be final. But, the class is still immutable without this. Is there really any downside to this improvement in maintainability? There has to be a reason which he repeated the properties within the nested class that I'm not seeing?

  • Camera Preview App in Android throwing many errors (Nexus 4)

  • How to serialize a protected property in wcf

    - by Denis Rosca
    Hello, i need some help with wcf serializing. I have two classes Person and Address. The Address class looks like this: public class Adresa : IExtensibleDataObject { private Guid _id; [DataMember] protected virtual Guid Id { get { return _id; } set { _id = value; } } private ExtensionDataObject _extensionData; [DataMember] public virtual ExtensionDataObject ExtensionData { get { return _extensionData; } set { _extensionData = value; } } private string _street; [DataMember] public virtual string Street { get { return this._cUTAM; } set { this._cUTAM = value; } } private string _number; [DataMember] public virtual string Number { get { return this._number; } set { this._number = value; } } private string _postalCode; [DataMember] public virtual string PostalCode { get { return this._postalCode; } set { this._postalCode = value; } } // and some other stuff related to the address } The Person class looks like this: public class PersoanaFizica :IExtensibleDataObject { private Guid _id; [DataMember] protected virtual Guid Id { get { return _id; } set { _id = value; } } private ExtensionDataObject _extensionData; [DataMember] public virtual ExtensionDataObject ExtensionData { get { return _extensionData; } set { _extensionData = value; } } private string _firstName; [DataMember] public virtual string FirstName { get { return this._firstName; } set { this._firstName = value; } } private string _lastName; [DataMember] public virtual string LastName { get { return this._lastName; } set { this._lastName = value; } } } The problem is that when the wcf client the data the Id properties are set to a bunch of zeros ( something like 000000-0000-000000-0000000). Any ideas on why this is happening? Thanks, Denis.

  • Serialization Performance and Google Android

    - by Jomanscool2
    I'm looking for advice to speed up serialization performance, specifically when using the Google Android. For a project I am working on, I am trying to relay a couple hundred objects from a server to the Android app, and am going through various stages to get the performance I need. First I tried a terrible XML parser that I hacked together using Scanner specifically for this project, and that caused unbelievably slow performance when loading the objects (~5 minutes for a 300KB file). I then moved away from that and made my classes implement Serializable and wrote the ArrayList of objects I had to a file. Reading that file into the objects the Android, with the file already downloaded mind you, was taking ~15-30 seconds for the ~100KB serialized file. I still find this completely unacceptable for an Android app, as my app requires loading the data when starting the application. I have read briefly about Externalizable and how it can increase performance, but I am not sure as to how one implements it with nested classes. Right now, I am trying to store an ArrayList of the following class, with the nested classes below it. public class MealMenu implements Serializable{ private String commonsName; private long startMillis, endMillis, modMillis; private ArrayList<Venue> venues; private String mealName; } And the Venue class: public class Venue implements Serializable{ private String name; private ArrayList<FoodItem> foodItems; } And the FoodItem class: public class FoodItem implements Serializable{ private String name; private boolean vegan; private boolean vegetarian; } IF Externalizable is the way to go to increase performance, is there any information as to how java calls the methods in the objects when you try to write it out? I am not sure if I need to implement it in the parent class, nor how I would go about serializing the nested objects within each object.

  • Help regarding composite pattern with hibernate

    - by molleman
    Hello, So i am stuck, i am creating a gwt web application, i will be using a tree(gwt Tree and TreeItems) structure to show a list of folders(class Folder) and files(class FileLocation), the folder and filelocation class will all implement a Hierarchy interface basing the classes on the composite pattern. but i am using hibernate to store my data , and i am using annotations for the mapping of the data to the database. my trouble is i do not know how to annotate my interface. have any of you guys used the composite pattern while persisting the data with hibernate public interface Hierarchy(){ // a few abstract methods that will be implemented by the sub classes } @Entity @Table() public class Folder extends Hierarchy implements Serializable { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) @Column(name = "folder_id", updatable = false, nullable = false) private int id; @OneToMany(cascade = CascadeType.ALL,fetch = FetchType.EAGER) @JoinTable(name = "FOLDER_FILELOCATION", joinColumns = { @JoinColumn(name = "folder_id") }, inverseJoinColumns = { @JoinColumn(name = "file_information_id") }) private List<Hierarchy> children = new ArrayList<Hierarchy>() ; @Column(name = "folder_name") private String folderName; @Column(name = "tree_item") private TreeItem item; @Column (name = "parent") private Hierarchy parent; @Entity @Table(name = "FILE_INFORMATION_TABLE") public class FileInformation extends Hierarchy implements Serializable { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) @Column(name = "file_information_id", updatable = false, nullable = false) private int fiId; @Column (name = "location") private String location; @Column(name = "tree_item") private TreeItem item; @Column (name = "parent") private Hierarchy parent;

  • Deserialize complex JSON (VB.NET)

    - by Ssstefan
    I'm trying to deserialize json returned by some directions API similar to Google Maps API. My JSON is as follows (I'm using VB.NET 2008): jsontext = { "version":0.3, "status":0, "route_summary": { "total_distance":300, "total_time":14, "start_point":"43", "end_point":"42" }, "route_geometry":[[51.025421,18.647631],[51.026131,18.6471],[51.027802,18.645639]], "route_instructions": [["Head northwest on 43",88,0,4,"88 m","NW",334.8],["Continue on 42",212,1,10,"0.2 km","NW",331.1,"C",356.3]] } So far I came up with the following code: Dim js As New System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer Dim lstTextAreas As Output_CloudMade() = js.Deserialize(Of Output_CloudMade())(jsontext) I'm not sure how to define complex class, i.e. Output_CloudMade. I'm trying something like: Public Class RouteSummary Private mTotalDist As Long Private mTotalTime As Long Private mStartPoint As String Private mEndPoint As String Public Property TotalDist() As Long Get Return mTotalDist End Get Set(ByVal value As Long) mTotalDist = value End Set End Property Public Property TotalTime() As Long Get Return mTotalTime End Get Set(ByVal value As Long) mTotalTime = value End Set End Property Public Property StartPoint() As String Get Return mStartPoint End Get Set(ByVal value As String) mStartPoint = value End Set End Property Public Property EndPoint() As String Get Return mEndPoint End Get Set(ByVal value As String) mEndPoint = value End Set End Property End Class Public Class Output_CloudMade Private mVersion As Double Private mStatus As Long Private mRSummary As RouteSummary 'Private mRGeometry As RouteGeometry 'Private mRInstructions As RouteInstructions Public Property Version() As Double Get Return mVersion End Get Set(ByVal value As Double) mVersion = value End Set End Property Public Property Status() As Long Get Return mStatus End Get Set(ByVal value As Long) mStatus = value End Set End Property Public Property Summary() As RouteSummary Get Return mRSummary End Get Set(ByVal value As RouteSummary) mRSummary = value End Set End Property 'Public Property Geometry() As String ' Get ' End Get ' Set(ByVal value As String) ' End Set 'End Property 'Public Property Instructions() As String ' Get ' End Get ' Set(ByVal value As String) ' End Set 'End Property End Class but it does not work. The problem is with complex properties, like route_summary. It is filled with "nothing". Other properties, like "status" or "version" are filled properly. Any ideas, how to define class for the above JSON? Can you share some working code for deserializing JSON in VB.NET? Thanks,

  • Netbeans GUI building on pre-defined code

    - by deliriumtremens
    I am supposed edit some code for an assignment, and he gave us the framework and wants us to implement code for it. I load the project into netbeans and can't figure out how I'm supposed to edit the swing components. I don't see how to edit source vs. design. import javax.swing.*; import java.util.*; import java.io.*; public class CurrencyConverterGUI extends javax.swing.JFrame { /************************************************************************************************************** insert your code here - most of this will be generated by NetBeans, however, you must write code for the event listeners and handlers for the two ComboBoxes, the two TextBoxes, and the Button. Therefore, 1 Euro is equivalent to 1.35 USD Use the rate specified for USD to convert to equivalent GBP: amount / USD_rate * GBP_rate ****************************************************************************/ } public ArrayList getKeys(){ // return KeyList } } This is what we were given, but I can't do anything with it inside the GUI editor. (Can't even get to the GUI editor). I have been staring at this for about an hour. Any ideas?

  • Simplest way to automatically alter "const" value in Java during compile time

    - by Michael Mao
    Hi all: This is a question corresponds to my uni assignment so I am very sorry to say I cannot adopt any one of the following best practices in a short time -- you know -- assignment is due tomorrow :( link to Best way to alter const in Java on StackOverflow Basically the only task (I hope so) left for me is the performance tuning. I've got a bunch of predefined "const" values in my single-class agent source code like this: //static final values private static final long FT_THRESHOLD = 400; private static final long FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN = 50; private static final long FT_SMOOTH_PRICE_IDICATOR = 20; private static final long FT_BUY_PRICE_MODIFIER = 0; private static final long FT_LAST_ROUNDS_STARTTIME = 90; private static final long FT_AMOUNT_ADJUST_MODIFIER = 5; private static final long FT_HISTORY_PIRCES_LENGTH = 10; private static final long FT_TRACK_DURATION = 5; private static final int MAX_BED_BID_NUM_PER_AUC = 12; I can definitely alter the values manually and then compile the code to give it another go around. But the execution time for a thorough "statistic analysis" usually requires over 2000 times of execution, which will typically lasts more than half an hour on my own laptop... So I hope there is a way to alter values using other ways than dig into the source code to change the "const" values there, so I can automatically distributed compiled code to other people's PC and let them run the statistic analysis instead. One other reason for a automatically value adjustment is that I can try using my own agent to defeat itself by choosing different "const" values. Although my values are derived from previous history and statistical results, they are far from the most optimized values. I hope there is a easy way so I can quickly adopt that so to have a good sleep tonight while the computer does everything for me... :) Any hints on this sort of stuff? Any suggestion is welcomed and much appreciated.

  • How to store some of the entity's values in another table using hibernate?

    - by nimcap
    Hi guys, is there a simple way to persist some of the fields in another class and table using hibernate. For example, I have a Person class with name, surname, email, address1, address2, city, country fields. I want my classes to be: public class Person { private String name; private String surname; private String email; private Address address; // .. } public class Address { private Person person; // to whom this belongs private String address1; private String address2; private String city; private Address country; // .. } and I want to store Address in another table. What is the best way to achieve this? Edit: I am using annotations. It does not have to be the way I described, I am looking for best practices. PS. If there is a way to make Address immutable (to use as a value object) that is even better, or maybe not because I thought everything from wrong perspective :)

  • Is there an ORM that supports composition w/o Joins

    - by Ken Downs
    EDIT: Changed title from "inheritance" to "composition". Left body of question unchanged. I'm curious if there is an ORM tool that supports inheritance w/o creating separate tables that have to be joined. Simple example. Assume a table of customers, with a Bill-to address, and a table of vendors, with a remit-to address. Keep it simple and assume one address each, not a child table of addresses for each. These addresses will have a handful of values in common: address 1, address 2, city, state/province, postal code. So let's say I'd have a class "addressBlock" and I want the customers and vendors to inherit from this class, and possibly from other classes. But I do not want separate tables that have to be joined, I want the columns in the customer and vendor tables respectively. Is there an ORM that supports this? The closest question I have found on StackOverflow that might be the same question is linked below, but I can't quite figure if the OP is asking what I am asking. He seems to be asking about foregoing inheritance precisely because there will be multiple tables. I'm looking for the case where you can use inheritance w/o generating the multiple tables. Model inheritance approach with Django's ORM

  • PHP Doxygen Collaboration Diagrams

    - by Shabbyrobe
    I've started playing around with doxygen to generate documentation from my PHP code. I notice there are two diagrams in the generated output - inheritance and collaboration. I know about the inheritance one, but the collaboration one has piqued my interest since reading the manual: If the COLLABORATION_GRAPH and HAVE_DOT tags are set to YES then doxygen will generate a graph for each documented class showing the direct and indirect implementation dependencies (inheritance, containment, and class references variables) of the class with other documented classes. The impression I get from that description is that composition relationships should be represented by the collaboration diagram as well, but it always seems to just be identical to the inheritance one. Is there something I can do to hint to Doxygen the things I would like to appear in this diagram? Does it just not work with PHP?

  • Multi-Column Join in Hibernate/JPA Annotations

    - by bowsie
    I have two entities which I would like to join through multiple columns. These columns are shared by an @Embeddable object that is shared by both entities. In the example below, Foo can have only one Bar but Bar can have multiple Foos (where AnEmbeddableObject is a unique key for Bar). Here is an example: @Entity @Table(name = "foo") public class Foo { @Id @Column(name = "id") @GeneratedValue(generator = "seqGen") @SequenceGenerator(name = "seqGen", sequenceName = "FOO_ID_SEQ", allocationSize = 1) private Long id; @Embedded private AnEmbeddableObject anEmbeddableObject; @ManyToOne(targetEntity = Bar.class, fetch = FetchType.LAZY) @JoinColumns( { @JoinColumn(name = "column_1", referencedColumnName = "column_1"), @JoinColumn(name = "column_2", referencedColumnName = "column_2"), @JoinColumn(name = "column_3", referencedColumnName = "column_3"), @JoinColumn(name = "column_4", referencedColumnName = "column_4") }) private Bar bar; // ... rest of class } And the Bar class: @Entity @Table(name = "bar") public class Bar { @Id @Column(name = "id") @GeneratedValue(generator = "seqGen") @SequenceGenerator(name = "seqGen", sequenceName = "BAR_ID_SEQ", allocationSize = 1) private Long id; @Embedded private AnEmbeddableObject anEmbeddableObject; // ... rest of class } Finally the AnEmbeddedObject class: @Embeddable public class AnEmbeddedObject { @Column(name = "column_1") private Long column1; @Column(name = "column_2") private Long column2; @Column(name = "column_3") private Long column3; @Column(name = "column_4") private Long column4; // ... rest of class } Obviously the schema is poorly normalised, it is a restriction that AnEmbeddedObject's fields are repeated in each table. The problem I have is that I receive this error when I try to start up Hibernate: org.hibernate.AnnotationException: referencedColumnNames(column_1, column_2, column_3, column_4) of Foo.bar referencing Bar not mapped to a single property I have tried marking the JoinColumns are not insertable and updatable, but with no luck. Is there a way to express this with Hibernate/JPA annotations? Thank you.

  • Introducing the Earthquake Locator – A Bing Maps Silverlight Application, part 1

    - by Bobby Diaz
    Update: Live demo and source code now available!  The recent wave of earthquakes (no pun intended) being reported in the news got me wondering about the frequency and severity of earthquakes around the world. Since I’ve been doing a lot of Silverlight development lately, I decided to scratch my curiosity with a nice little Bing Maps application that will show the location and relative strength of recent seismic activity. Here is a list of technologies this application will utilize, so be sure to have everything downloaded and installed if you plan on following along. Silverlight 3 WCF RIA Services Bing Maps Silverlight Control * Managed Extensibility Framework (optional) MVVM Light Toolkit (optional) log4net (optional) * If you are new to Bing Maps or have not signed up for a Developer Account, you will need to visit www.bingmapsportal.com to request a Bing Maps key for your application. Getting Started We start out by creating a new Silverlight Application called EarthquakeLocator and specify that we want to automatically create the Web Application Project with RIA Services enabled. I cleaned up the web app by removing the Default.aspx and EarthquakeLocatorTestPage.html. Then I renamed the EarthquakeLocatorTestPage.aspx to Default.aspx and set it as my start page. I also set the development server to use a specific port, as shown below. RIA Services Next, I created a Services folder in the EarthquakeLocator.Web project and added a new Domain Service Class called EarthquakeService.cs. This is the RIA Services Domain Service that will provide earthquake data for our client application. I am not using LINQ to SQL or Entity Framework, so I will use the <empty domain service class> option. We will be pulling data from an external Atom feed, but this example could just as easily pull data from a database or another web service. This is an important distinction to point out because each scenario I just mentioned could potentially use a different Domain Service base class (i.e. LinqToSqlDomainService<TDataContext>). Now we can start adding Query methods to our EarthquakeService that pull data from the USGS web site. Here is the complete code for our service class: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.IO; using System.Linq; using System.ServiceModel.Syndication; using System.Web.DomainServices; using System.Web.Ria; using System.Xml; using log4net; using EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Services {     /// <summary>     /// Provides earthquake data to client applications.     /// </summary>     [EnableClientAccess()]     public class EarthquakeService : DomainService     {         private static readonly ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(EarthquakeService));           // USGS Data Feeds: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/catalogs/         private const string FeedForPreviousDay =             "http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/catalogs/1day-M2.5.xml";         private const string FeedForPreviousWeek =             "http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/catalogs/7day-M2.5.xml";           /// <summary>         /// Gets the earthquake data for the previous week.         /// </summary>         /// <returns>A queryable collection of <see cref="Earthquake"/> objects.</returns>         public IQueryable<Earthquake> GetEarthquakes()         {             var feed = GetFeed(FeedForPreviousWeek);             var list = new List<Earthquake>();               if ( feed != null )             {                 foreach ( var entry in feed.Items )                 {                     var quake = CreateEarthquake(entry);                     if ( quake != null )                     {                         list.Add(quake);                     }                 }             }               return list.AsQueryable();         }           /// <summary>         /// Creates an <see cref="Earthquake"/> object for each entry in the Atom feed.         /// </summary>         /// <param name="entry">The Atom entry.</param>         /// <returns></returns>         private Earthquake CreateEarthquake(SyndicationItem entry)         {             Earthquake quake = null;             string title = entry.Title.Text;             string summary = entry.Summary.Text;             string point = GetElementValue<String>(entry, "point");             string depth = GetElementValue<String>(entry, "elev");             string utcTime = null;             string localTime = null;             string depthDesc = null;             double? Model I have also created a Model folder and added a new class, Earthquake.cs. The Earthquake object will hold the various properties returned from the Atom feed. Here is a sample of the code for that class. Notice the [Key] attribute on the Id property, which is required by RIA Services to uniquely identify the entity. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Runtime.Serialization; using System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model {     /// <summary>     /// Represents an earthquake occurrence and related information.     /// </summary>     [DataContract]     public class Earthquake     {         /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the id.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The id.</value>         [Key]         [DataMember]         public string Id { get; set; }           /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the title.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The title.</value>         [DataMember]         public string Title { get; set; }           /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the summary.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The summary.</value>         [DataMember]         public string Summary { get; set; }           // additional properties omitted     } }   View Model The recent trend to use the MVVM pattern for WPF and Silverlight provides a great way to separate the data and behavior logic out of the user interface layer of your client applications. I have chosen to use the MVVM Light Toolkit for the Earthquake Locator, but there are other options out there if you prefer another library. That said, I went ahead and created a ViewModel folder in the Silverlight project and added a EarthquakeViewModel class that derives from ViewModelBase. Here is the code: using System; using System.Collections.ObjectModel; using System.ComponentModel.Composition; using System.ComponentModel.Composition.Hosting; using Microsoft.Maps.MapControl; using GalaSoft.MvvmLight; using EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model; using EarthquakeLocator.Web.Services;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.ViewModel {     /// <summary>     /// Provides data for views displaying earthquake information.     /// </summary>     public class EarthquakeViewModel : ViewModelBase     {         [Import]         public EarthquakeContext Context;           /// <summary>         /// Initializes a new instance of the <see cref="EarthquakeViewModel"/> class.         /// </summary>         public EarthquakeViewModel()         {             var catalog = new AssemblyCatalog(GetType().Assembly);             var container = new CompositionContainer(catalog);             container.ComposeParts(this);             Initialize();         }           /// <summary>         /// Initializes a new instance of the <see cref="EarthquakeViewModel"/> class.         /// </summary>         /// <param name="context">The context.</param>         public EarthquakeViewModel(EarthquakeContext context)         {             Context = context;             Initialize();         }           private void Initialize()         {             MapCenter = new Location(20, -170);             ZoomLevel = 2;         }           #region Private Methods           private void OnAutoLoadDataChanged()         {             LoadEarthquakes();         }           private void LoadEarthquakes()         {             var query = Context.GetEarthquakesQuery();             Context.Earthquakes.Clear();               Context.Load(query, (op) =>             {                 if ( !op.HasError )                 {                     foreach ( var item in op.Entities )                     {                         Earthquakes.Add(item);                     }                 }             }, null);         }           #endregion Private Methods           #region Properties           private bool autoLoadData;         /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets a value indicating whether to auto load data.         /// </summary>         /// <value><c>true</c> if auto loading data; otherwise, <c>false</c>.</value>         public bool AutoLoadData         {             get { return autoLoadData; }             set             {                 if ( autoLoadData != value )                 {                     autoLoadData = value;                     RaisePropertyChanged("AutoLoadData");                     OnAutoLoadDataChanged();                 }             }         }           private ObservableCollection<Earthquake> earthquakes;                 }                   return earthquakes;             }         }           private Location mapCenter;         /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the map center.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The map center.</value>         public Location MapCenter         {             get { return mapCenter; }             set             {                 if ( mapCenter != value )                 {                     mapCenter = value;                     RaisePropertyChanged("MapCenter");                 }             }         }           private double zoomLevel;         /// <summary>         /// Gets or sets the zoom level.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The zoom level.</value>         public double ZoomLevel         {             get { return zoomLevel; }             set             {                 if ( zoomLevel != value )                 {                     zoomLevel = value;                     RaisePropertyChanged("ZoomLevel");                 }             }         }           #endregion Properties     } }   The EarthquakeViewModel class contains all of the properties that will be bound to by the various controls in our views. Be sure to read through the LoadEarthquakes() method, which handles calling the GetEarthquakes() method in our EarthquakeService via the EarthquakeContext proxy, and also transfers the loaded entities into the view model’s Earthquakes collection. Another thing to notice is what’s going on in the default constructor. I chose to use the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) for my composition needs, but you can use any dependency injection library or none at all. To allow the EarthquakeContext class to be discoverable by MEF, I added the following partial class so that I could supply the appropriate [Export] attribute: using System; using System.ComponentModel.Composition;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Services {     /// <summary>     /// The client side proxy for the EarthquakeService class.     /// </summary>     [Export]     public partial class EarthquakeContext     {     } }   One last piece I wanted to point out before moving on to the user interface, I added a client side partial class for the Earthquake entity that contains helper properties that we will bind to later: using System;   namespace EarthquakeLocator.Web.Model {     /// <summary>     /// Represents an earthquake occurrence and related information.     /// </summary>     public partial class Earthquake     {         /// <summary>         /// Gets the location based on the current Latitude/Longitude.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The location.</value>         public string Location         {             get { return String.Format("{0},{1}", Latitude, Longitude); }         }           /// <summary>         /// Gets the size based on the Magnitude.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The size.</value>         public double Size         {             get { return (Magnitude * 3); }         }     } }   View Now the fun part! Usually, I would create a Views folder to place all of my View controls in, but I took the easy way out and added the following XAML code to the default MainPage.xaml file. Be sure to add the bing prefix associating the Microsoft.Maps.MapControl namespace after adding the assembly reference to your project. The MVVM Light Toolkit project templates come with a ViewModelLocator class that you can use via a static resource, but I am instantiating the EarthquakeViewModel directly in my user control. I am setting the AutoLoadData property to true as a way to trigger the LoadEarthquakes() method call. The MapItemsControl found within the <bing:Map> control binds its ItemsSource property to the Earthquakes collection of the view model, and since it is an ObservableCollection<T>, we get the automatic two way data binding via the INotifyCollectionChanged interface. <UserControl x:Class="EarthquakeLocator.MainPage"     xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"     xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"     xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"     xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"     xmlns:bing="clr-namespace:Microsoft.Maps.MapControl;assembly=Microsoft.Maps.MapControl"     xmlns:vm="clr-namespace:EarthquakeLocator.ViewModel"     mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" >     <UserControl.Resources>         <DataTemplate x:Key="EarthquakeTemplate">             <Ellipse Fill="Red" Stroke="Black" StrokeThickness="1"                      Width="{Binding Size}" Height="{Binding Size}"                      bing:MapLayer.Position="{Binding Location}"                      bing:MapLayer.PositionOrigin="Center">                 <ToolTipService.ToolTip>                     <StackPanel>                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding Title}" FontSize="14" FontWeight="Bold" />                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding UtcTime}" />                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding LocalTime}" />                         <TextBlock Text="{Binding DepthDesc}" />                     </StackPanel>                 </ToolTipService.ToolTip>             </Ellipse>         </DataTemplate>     </UserControl.Resources>       <UserControl.DataContext>         <vm:EarthquakeViewModel AutoLoadData="True" />     </UserControl.DataContext>       <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot">           <bing:Map x:Name="map" CredentialsProvider="--Your-Bing-Maps-Key--"                   Center="{Binding MapCenter, Mode=TwoWay}"                   ZoomLevel="{Binding ZoomLevel, Mode=TwoWay}">             <bing:MapItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Earthquakes}"                                   ItemTemplate="{StaticResource EarthquakeTemplate}" />         </bing:Map>       </Grid> </UserControl>   The EarthquakeTemplate defines the Ellipse that will represent each earthquake, the Width and Height that are determined by the Magnitude, the Position on the map, and also the tooltip that will appear when we mouse over each data point. Running the application will give us the following result (shown with a tooltip example): That concludes this portion of our show but I plan on implementing additional functionality in later blog posts. Be sure to come back soon to see the next installments in this series. • Using TPL and PLINQ to raise performance of feed aggregator

    - by DigiMortal
    In this posting I will show you how to use Task Parallel Library (TPL) and PLINQ features to boost performance of simple RSS-feed aggregator. I will use here only very basic .NET classes that almost every developer starts from when learning parallel programming. Of course, we will also measure how every optimization affects performance of feed aggregator. Feed aggregator Our feed aggregator works as follows: Load list of blogs Download RSS-feed Parse feed XML Add new posts to database Our feed aggregator is run by task scheduler after every 15 minutes by example. We will start our journey with serial implementation of feed aggregator. Second step is to use task parallelism and parallelize feeds downloading and parsing. And our last step is to use data parallelism to parallelize database operations. We will use Stopwatch class to measure how much time it takes for aggregator to download and insert all posts from all registered blogs. After every run we empty posts table in database. Serial aggregation Before doing parallel stuff let’s take a look at serial implementation of feed aggregator. All tasks happen one after other. internal class FeedClient {     private readonly INewsService _newsService;     private const int FeedItemContentMaxLength = 255;       public FeedClient()     {          ObjectFactory.Initialize(container =>          {              container.PullConfigurationFromAppConfig = true;          });           _newsService = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<INewsService>();     }       public void Execute()     {         var blogs = _newsService.ListPublishedBlogs();           for (var index = 0; index <blogs.Count; index++)         {              ImportFeed(blogs[index]);         }     }       private void ImportFeed(BlogDto blog)     {         if(blog == null)             return;         if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(blog.RssUrl))             return;           var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         SyndicationContentFormat feedFormat;           feedFormat = SyndicationDiscoveryUtility.SyndicationContentFormatGet(uri);           if (feedFormat == SyndicationContentFormat.Rss)             ImportRssFeed(blog);         if (feedFormat == SyndicationContentFormat.Atom)             ImportAtomFeed(blog);                 }       private void ImportRssFeed(BlogDto blog)     {         var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         var feed = RssFeed.Create(uri);           foreach (var item in feed.Channel.Items)         {             SaveRssFeedItem(item, blog.Id, blog.CreatedById);         }     }       private void ImportAtomFeed(BlogDto blog)     {         var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         var feed = AtomFeed.Create(uri);           foreach (var item in feed.Entries)         {             SaveAtomFeedEntry(item, blog.Id, blog.CreatedById);         }     } } Serial implementation of feed aggregator downloads and inserts all posts with 25.46 seconds. Task parallelism Task parallelism means that separate tasks are run in parallel. You can find out more about task parallelism from MSDN page Task Parallelism (Task Parallel Library) and Wikipedia page Task parallelism. Although finding parts of code that can run safely in parallel without synchronization issues is not easy task we are lucky this time. Feeds import and parsing is perfect candidate for parallel tasks. We can safely parallelize feeds import because importing tasks doesn’t share any resources and therefore they don’t also need any synchronization. After getting the list of blogs we iterate through the collection and start new TPL task for each blog feed aggregation. internal class FeedClient {     private readonly INewsService _newsService;     private const int FeedItemContentMaxLength = 255;       public FeedClient()     {          ObjectFactory.Initialize(container =>          {              container.PullConfigurationFromAppConfig = true;          });           _newsService = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<INewsService>();     }       public void Execute()     {         var blogs = _newsService.ListPublishedBlogs();                var tasks = new Task[blogs.Count];           for (var index = 0; index <blogs.Count; index++)         {             tasks[index] = new Task(ImportFeed, blogs[index]);             tasks[index].Start();         }           Task.WaitAll(tasks);     }       private void ImportFeed(object blogObject)     {         if(blogObject == null)             return;         var blog = (BlogDto)blogObject;         if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(blog.RssUrl))             return;           var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         SyndicationContentFormat feedFormat;           feedFormat = SyndicationDiscoveryUtility.SyndicationContentFormatGet(uri);           if (feedFormat == SyndicationContentFormat.Rss)             ImportRssFeed(blog);         if (feedFormat == SyndicationContentFormat.Atom)             ImportAtomFeed(blog);                }       private void ImportRssFeed(BlogDto blog)     {          var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);          var feed = RssFeed.Create(uri);           foreach (var item in feed.Channel.Items)          {              SaveRssFeedItem(item, blog.Id, blog.CreatedById);          }     }     private void ImportAtomFeed(BlogDto blog)     {         var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         var feed = AtomFeed.Create(uri);           foreach (var item in feed.Entries)         {             SaveAtomFeedEntry(item, blog.Id, blog.CreatedById);         }     } } You should notice first signs of the power of TPL. We made only minor changes to our code to parallelize blog feeds aggregating. On my machine this modification gives some performance boost – time is now 17.57 seconds. Data parallelism There is one more way how to parallelize activities. Previous section introduced task or operation based parallelism, this section introduces data based parallelism. By MSDN page Data Parallelism (Task Parallel Library) data parallelism refers to scenario in which the same operation is performed concurrently on elements in a source collection or array. In our code we have independent collections we can process in parallel – imported feed entries. As checking for feed entry existence and inserting it if it is missing from database doesn’t affect other entries the imported feed entries collection is ideal candidate for parallelization. internal class FeedClient {     private readonly INewsService _newsService;     private const int FeedItemContentMaxLength = 255;       public FeedClient()     {          ObjectFactory.Initialize(container =>          {              container.PullConfigurationFromAppConfig = true;          });           _newsService = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<INewsService>();     }       public void Execute()     {         var blogs = _newsService.ListPublishedBlogs();                var tasks = new Task[blogs.Count];           for (var index = 0; index <blogs.Count; index++)         {             tasks[index] = new Task(ImportFeed, blogs[index]);             tasks[index].Start();         }           Task.WaitAll(tasks);     }       private void ImportFeed(object blogObject)     {         if(blogObject == null)             return;         var blog = (BlogDto)blogObject;         if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(blog.RssUrl))             return;           var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         SyndicationContentFormat feedFormat;           feedFormat = SyndicationDiscoveryUtility.SyndicationContentFormatGet(uri);           if (feedFormat == SyndicationContentFormat.Rss)             ImportRssFeed(blog);         if (feedFormat == SyndicationContentFormat.Atom)             ImportAtomFeed(blog);                }       private void ImportRssFeed(BlogDto blog)     {         var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         var feed = RssFeed.Create(uri);           feed.Channel.Items.AsParallel().ForAll(a =>         {             SaveRssFeedItem(a, blog.Id, blog.CreatedById);         });      }        private void ImportAtomFeed(BlogDto blog)      {         var uri = new Uri(blog.RssUrl);         var feed = AtomFeed.Create(uri);           feed.Entries.AsParallel().ForAll(a =>         {              SaveAtomFeedEntry(a, blog.Id, blog.CreatedById);         });      } } We did small change again and as the result we parallelized checking and saving of feed items. This change was data centric as we applied same operation to all elements in collection. On my machine I got better performance again. Time is now 11.22 seconds. Results Let’s visualize our measurement results (numbers are given in seconds). As we can see then with task parallelism feed aggregation takes about 25% less time than in original case. When adding data parallelism to task parallelism our aggregation takes about 2.3 times less time than in original case. More about TPL and PLINQ Adding parallelism to your application can be very challenging task. You have to carefully find out parts of your code where you can safely go to parallel processing and even then you have to measure the effects of parallel processing to find out if parallel code performs better. If you are not careful then troubles you will face later are worse than ones you have seen before (imagine error that occurs by average only once per 10000 code runs). Parallel programming is something that is hard to ignore. Effective programs are able to use multiple cores of processors. Using TPL you can also set degree of parallelism so your application doesn’t use all computing cores and leaves one or more of them free for host system and other processes. And there are many more things in TPL that make it easier for you to start and go on with parallel programming. In next major version all .NET languages will have built-in support for parallel programming. There will be also new language constructs that support parallel programming. Currently you can download Visual Studio Async to get some idea about what is coming. Conclusion Parallel programming is very challenging but good tools offered by Visual Studio and .NET Framework make it way easier for us. In this posting we started with feed aggregator that imports feed items on serial mode. With two steps we parallelized feed importing and entries inserting gaining 2.3 times raise in performance. Although this number is specific to my test environment it shows clearly that parallel programming may raise the performance of your application significantly.
