• Does the UISplitViewController have to be the root controller of an iPad app?

  Hey friends, According to Apple's documentation on the UISplitViewController (in the new iPad 3.2 SDK) it looks like they intend for you to use it only as a root controller of an app. In other words...it seams like you cannot push a UISplitViewController onto a UINavigationController because obviously the UINavigationController would need to hold the split view. Can anyone confirm if this is a true limitation of the UISplitViewController? I was hoping to use the split view in my app a few levels deep in my UINavigationController hierarchy but it looks like I won't be able to do that unless there is a way. Thank you!

• How to remove segmentedcontroller from uinavigationcontroller after view pops?

  I'm building a segmented control within my viewDidLoad method, like so: NSArray *tabitems = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"ONE", @"TWO", nil]; UISegmentedControl *tabs = [[UISegmentedControl alloc] initWithItems:tabitems]; tabs.segmentedControlStyle = UISegmentedControlStyleBar; tabs.frame = CGRectMake(185.0, 7.0, 130.0, 30.0); tabs.selectedSegmentIndex = 0; [self.navigationController.navigationBar addSubview:tabs]; [tabs release]; But when the user goes Back in the uinavigationcontroller hierarchy, the segmented controller stays on the navigation bar. How would I get rid of it? Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong?

• Refactor/rewrite code or continue?

  I just completed a complex piece of code. It works to spec, it meets performance requirements etc etc but I feel a bit anxious about it and am considering rewriting and/or refactoring it. Should I do this (spending time that could otherwise be spent on features that users will actually notice)? The reasons I feel anxious about the code are: The class hierarchy is complex and not obvious Some classes don't have a well defined purpose (they do a number of unrelated things) Some classes use others internals (they're declared as friend classes) to bypass the layers of abstraction for performance, but I feel they break encapsulation by doing this Some classes leak implementation details (eg, I changed a map to a hash map earlier and found myself having to modify code in other source files to make the change work) My memory management/pooling system is kinda clunky and less-than transparent They look like excellent reasons to refactor and clean code, aiding future maintenance and extension, but could be quite time consuming. Also, I'll never be perfectly happy with any code I write anyway... So, what does stackoverflow think? Clean code or work on features?

  I have a product category table with the following fields: cat_id (PK) Cat_name Cat_desc Parent_Cat_Id Now when a user wants to add a product he should be able to select multiple categories from a listbox(multiselection enabaled). But to let the user know the hierarchy of the categories, I need to display them in the following style: parent category 1 parent category 1-sub category 1 parent category 1-sub category 1-sub-sub category 1 parent category 1-sub category 1-sub-sub category 2 parent category 1-sub category 2 Parent category 2 ... I know that to achieve this I need to use recursive programming. But how can we do it via stored procedures? That would be much more efficient, right? Thanks in advance for your kind help.

• setting source classpath in eclipse

  What do you guys do, when you have huge project built with ant for instance, where the source folders are right bellow the root project folder for building classpath from source files ? putting entire project as a source folder is nonsense. Putting separate folders as source folders can't be done if they are part of the package hierarchy and the only thing I could think of, is to copy the source folders into a separate folder and add it then as source folder which is weird but I don't know how else to do it. Having to duplicate sources just because of the eclipse way of making classpath and also because of somebody doing stupid project structure

• TFS and team project portal question

  The team explorer for my project looks like this: mytfsserver\mycollection -- Project 1 solution -- Project 2 solution -- Project 3 solution When I right click on one of the solutions and do a "Show Project Portal", I see the following hierarchy: mycollection - WSS site Project 1 site with dashboard (appears to be a MOSS site) Project 2 site with dashboard (appears to be a MOSS site) Project 3 site with dashboard (appears to be a MOSS site) Are the dashboard sites MOSS sites? If I want to create a wiki, do I have to create a subsite with the wiki template under each of the Project sites? Can someone point me to a document/video that talks about the sites that area created by TFS by default?

• How to efficiently manage files on a filesystem in Java?

  I am creating a few JAX-WS endpoints, for which I want to save the received and sent messages for later inspection. To do this, I am planning to save the messages (XML files) into filesystem, in some sensible hierarchy. There will be hundreds, even thousands of files per day. I also need to store metadata for each file. I am considering to put the metadata (just a couple of fields) into database table, but the XML file content itself into files in a filesystem in order not to bloat the database with content data (that is seldomly read). Is there some simple library that helps me in saving, loading, deleting etc. the files? It's not that tricky to implement it myself, but I wonder if there are existing solutions? Just a simple library that already provides easy access to filesystem (preferrably over different operating systems). Or do I even need that, should I just go with raw/custom Java?

• Is NSDictionary key order guaranteed the same as initialized if it never changes?

  I've run into the same problem as found in this question. However, I have a follow-up question. I seem to be in the same situation as the original asker: I have a plist with a hierarchy of dictionaries that define a configuration screen. These are not mutable and will stay the same throughout the application. Since the original discussion seems to focus on problems arising from mutating the dictionary, I must ask for comfirmation: is the order of a dictionary guaranteed the same as they are in the plist, i.e. as it is read (with initWithContentsOfFile)? Can I use allKeys on it in this case to get a correct-order array of keys if the dictionary never changes?

• A little bit more complicated multiview App for Iphone

  Hi, i'm new to iphone development. I spend several days by looking for how write muliview app for an Iphone OS. I found how to switch the diferent views without navigation hierarchy (in this article). It's great, but i want more complicated function. For example, i have three diferent views (view 1 - 3) and i can switch between them with technique from link 1. It works fine. My question is: How can i put UITabBarController on view 2, that shows own subviews (tabView 1 - 3) and how put UINavigationController on view 3, that shows own subviews (navView 1 - 2)? The reslut should look like that, one main view (view 1) with two buttons (for example), which switch me to "window" with UiTabBarController or UINavigationController. I found only tutorials, where UITabBarController was a first controller class, that shows directly from AppDelegate (something like default Xcode predefined scenarios). Thanks for your helpfull answer, or i will be crazy soon:).

• In terminal, merging multiple folders into one.

  I have a backup directory created by WDBackup (western digital external HD backup util) that contains a directory for each day that it backed up and the incremental contents of just what was backed up. So the hierarchy looks like this: 20100101 My Documents Letter1.doc My Music Best Songs Every First Songs.mp3 My song.mp3 # modified 20100101 20100102 My Documents Important Docs Taxes.doc My Music My Song.mp3 # modified 20100102 ...etc... Only what has changed is backed up and the first backup that was ever made contains all the files selected for backup. What I'm trying to do now is incrementally copy, while keeping the folder structure, from oldest to newest, each of these dated folders into a 'merged' folder so that it overrides the older content and keeps the new stuff. As an example, if just using these two example folders, the final merged folder would look like this: Merged My Documents Important Docs Taxes.doc Letter1.doc My Music Best Songs Every First Songs.mp3 My Song.mp3 # modified 20100102 Hope that makes sense.   I have been using UIViewControllers and initWithNibName with much success, basically using them as a convenient way to design the view with Interface Builder. Unfortunately I have built a hierarchy of views before noticing this line in the UIViewController documentation: Note: You should not use view controllers to manage views that fill only a part of their window My question is this: Having a very simple NIB that only has a UIView in addition to the default First Responder and Owning Object, what is the simplest way to load the UIView into my code? I have not been able to get loadNibNamed:owner:options: to work at this point, but suspect the answer will involve it somehow.

• T-SQL: Build Nested Set From Parent-Child Relationship

  I have a table that stores my Customer hierarchy with a nested set (due to the specific design of the application, I wasn't able to leverage just a Customer/Parent Customer mapping table). To simplify maintenance of this table, I've built a couple of stored procedures to handle moving nodes around and creating new nodes, but it's significantly more work than maintaining a Customer/Parent Customer table. Further, these structures are very fragile. So I'm looking for a way to have a Customer/Parent Customer table and then convert that table to a nested set on demand. Does anyone have a link to such an implementation?

  Hi there, I have a long View Controllers hierarchy; in the first View Controller I use this code: SecondViewController *svc = [[SecondViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"SecondViewController" bundle:nil]; [self presentModalViewController:svc animated:YES]; [svc release]; In the second View Controller I use this code: ThirdViewController *tvc = [[ThirdViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ThirdViewController" bundle:nil]; [self presentModalViewController:tvc animated:YES]; [tvc release]; and so on. So there is a moment when I have many View Controllers and I need to come back to the first View Controller. If I come back one step at once, I use in every View Controller this code: [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; If I want to go back directly from the, say, sixth View Controller to the first one, what I have to do to dismiss all the Controllers at once? By depth, I mean, how many parent and ancestor records exist. • Iterating 'Active' View Controllers

  Ola Folks, In an iPhone application I am displaying different views by using the addSubView:SomeViewController.view method. I want to be able to, at the very least, log the view controllers that are in the view hierarchy that is being displayed. I would prefer to be able to get a handle to a specific view controller. I know how to iterate the views, I just do not see how to access the view controllers of those views. I am looking for something that will give me the type of access to the view controllers that UINavigationController::ViewControllers does. I thought I could get away with: for (UIViewController* oVC in [self.view subviews]) but this is not having the intended effect. If someone has a way of doing this, please share it with me. -isdi-

• Accessing NHibernate Repository using ASP.NET Ajax WebMethod

  Hi there! on my page I have a save button that gets the values from the form and then saves it in the database using NHibernate. This works using ASP.net postback buttons. I have now added an Ajax WebMethod to make things sleek and quicker. Howver, when trying to access the data in the repository it doesn't seem to get it. I am passing in the correct values, and everything looks the same as when you are using the postback but no Joy! I should point out here that I'm a newbie with NHibernate and I'm working with someone elses code. Here's the code: the main problem is this line: Solution.Entities.Hierarchy.Tag tag = tagRep.Get(tagId); The tagID is fine, but when it does the get no exception is raised it just comes out the method and goes back to the page???? http://pastebin.com/cBTp9pnC Anyone have any ideas? All the getter and setter are delegated from Business class to BusinessData class. I thought about implementing IBusinessData interface that will contain all the getter and setters and IBusiness interface that will extend it. I can either make Business extend BuisnessData so I will not need to implement all getter and setter delegates, or make some abstract class ForwardingBusinessData that will only delegate getter and setters. Any of the above option I loose my hierarchy freedom, does any of you have any creative solution for this problem... I also reviewed DAO pattern: http://java.sun.com/blueprints/patterns/DAO.html

• Lackadaisical One-to-One between Char and Byte Streams

  I expected to have a one-to-one correspondence between the character streams and byte streams in terms of how the classes are organized in their hierarchy. FilterReader and FilterWriter (character streams) correspond back to FilterInputStream and FilterOutputStream (byte stream) classes. However I noticed few changes as - BufferedInputStream extends FilterInputStream, but BufferedReader does NOT extend FilterReader. BufferedOutputStream and PrintStream both extend FilterOutputStream, but BufferedWriter and PrintWriter does NOT extend FilterWriter. FilterInputStream and FilterOutputStream are not abstract classes, but FilterReader and FilterWriter are. I am not sure if I am being too paranoid to point out such differences, but was just curious to know if there was design reasoning behind such decision.

• What's wrong with my svn:ignore pattern?

  I have the pattern svn:ignore datasheets/*/*.pdf It is supposed to ignore all pdfs that are at an arbitrary depth under multiple "datasheet" directories under the current root folder. As an example: say I have a dir structure like this Websites -web1 -dataSheets -AT -ignore.pdf -BE -NL -ignore.pdf -FR -ignore.pdf -ignore2.pdf -licenseAgreements -important.pdf -web2 -datasheets -etc In this example the pattern needs to ignore all the ignore.pdfs without ingoring the important.pdf too. The shown pattern still includes all my pdf files. I know there are a bunch of similar questions, but none of them seem to tackle the problem with the various hierarchy levels.

  I'm re-working some prototype code into a policy based design in C++, and I'm wondering what the best practice is for documenting the design. My current plan is to document: Policy hierarchy Overview of each policy Description of each type/value/function in each policy I was thinking of putting this into a doxygen module, but this looks like it will be a bit awkward since formatting will have to be done by hand without code to base the doc on (that is, documenting the policies rather than the implementation of the policies). So my questions are: Are there other aspects of the design that should be documented? Are there any tricks to doing this efficiently in doxygen? Is there a tool other than doxygen thats better suited to this? What are some examples of well documented policy based design? This is my first serious attempt at policy based design. I think I have a working grasp of the principles, but whatever naivety I expose in this question is fair game for an answer too.

  A while back I read (before I lost it) a great book called GUI Bloopers which was full of examples of bad GUI design but also full of useful tidbits like Don't call something a Dialog one minute and a Popup the next. What top tips would you give for designing/documenting a GUI? It would be particularly useful to hear about widgets you designed to cram readable information into as little screen real-estate as possible. I'm going to roll this off with one of my own: avoid trees (e.g. Swing's JTree) unless you really can't avoid it, or have a unbounded hierarchy of stuff. I have found that users don't find them intuitive and they are hard to navigate and filter. PS. I think this question differs from this one as I'm asking for generalist tips
