• Updating multiple divs w/ RJS/AJAX

  I am successfully using RJS to implement AJAX on a page.replace.html create.js.rjs. I am attempting to update two locations instead of one and after watching Ryan Bates Railscast I am very close (I think) but have a problem in the syntax of my /views/likes/create.js.rjs file. Here is the situation: located at /views/likes/create.js.rjs is the following code: page.replace_html "votes_#{ @site.id }", :partial => @like page.replace_html "counter", 10 - (@question.likes.count :conditions => {:user_id => current_user.id}) page[@like].visual_effect :highlight My problem lies in the second line. The div "counter" displays the following code in the /views/question/show.html.erb page: <div id="counter"> You have <%= 10 - (@question.likes.count :conditions => {:user_id => current_user.id}) %> votes remaining for this question </div> From watching the screen cast I believe that my error has to do w/ the syntax of the second line. Specifically he mentions that you cannot use a local instance variable but not sure how to make the change. Thoughts?

  I thought what I was doing was right out of the Josh Smith MVVM handbook, but I seem to be having a lot of problems with value converters firing when no data in the view-model has changed. So, I have a ContentControl defined in XAML like this: <ContentControl Grid.Row="0" Content="{Binding CurrentViewModel}" /> The Window containing this ContentControl references a resource dictionary that looks something like this: <ResourceDictionary ...> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:SetupPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:SetupPanel /> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:InstructionsPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:InstructionsPanel /> </DataTemplate> </ResourceDictionary> So, basically, the two data templates specify which view to show with which view-model. This switches the views as expected whenever the CurrentViewModel property on my window's view-model changes, but it also seems to cause value converters on the views to fire even when no data has changed. It's a particular problem with IMultiValueConverter classes, because the values in the value array get set to DependencyProperty.UnsetValue, which causes exceptions unless I specifically check for that. But I'm getting other weird side effects too. This has me wondering if I shouldn't just do everything manually, like this: Instantiate each view. Set the DataContext of each view to the appropriate view-model. Give the ContentControl a name and make it public. Handle the PropertyChanged event for the window. In the event handler, manually set the Content property of the ContentControl to the appropriate view, based the CurrentViewModel (using if statements). This seems to work, but it also seems very inelegant. I'm hoping there's a better way. Could you please advise me the best way to handle view switching so that value converters don't fire unnecessarily?

• Is it bad practice to make a setter return "this"?

  Is it a good or bad idea to make setters in java return "this"? public Employee setName(String name){ this.name = name; return this; } This pattern can be useful because then you can chain setters like this: list.add(new Employee().setName("Jack Sparrow").setId(1).setFoo("bacon!")); instead of this: Employee e = new Employee(); e.setName("Jack Sparrow"); ...and so on... list.add(e); ...but it sort of goes against standard convention. I suppose it might be worthwhile just because it can make that setter do something else useful. I've seen this pattern used some places (e.g. JMock, JPA), but it seems uncommon, and only generally used for very well defined APIs where this pattern is used everywhere. Update: What I've described is obviously valid, but what I am really looking for is some thoughts on whether this is generally acceptable, and if there are any pitfalls or related best practices. I know about the Builder pattern but it is a little more involved then what I am describing - as Josh Bloch describes it there is an associated static Builder class for object creation.

• How can I search an XML file without a dynamic language?

  Let me try to explain my situation: We are using a CMS which 'bakes' a website, and you publish it to a webserver. The published site contains only static HTML ( or XML ) pages ( generated from the content in the CMS database ). I imported an XML file with the names and phone numbers from the company phone directory. Using only XSLT, can I create a way to search that directory? For example, if my XML file, directory.xml looks like this: <directory> <person> <fname>Ryan</fname> <lname>Purple</lname> <phone>887 778 5544</phone> </person> <person> <fname>Tanya</fname> <lname>Orange</lname> <phone>887 998 5541</phone> </person> <directory> Can I create a way to search for a person with the last name starting with "Pur" ? Can I pass a parameter to the XSLT? Can I search the XML tree to match the string in the parameter?

• Problem with Railscast #197 - Nested Model Form Part 2

  I'm trying to implement Ryan's Railscast #197 in a system with Questions, Answers, and (multiple choice) Options. http://railscasts.com/episodes/197-nested-model-form-part-2. I have successfully implemented the nesting among these forms/partials. The simpler 'check box' way to delete records works properly. The problem occurs when I try to add/delete records. • Rails: Multi-Step New User Signup Form (FSM?)

  I've read the "Create Multi-Step Wizard" in Advanced Rails Recipes. I've also read and re-read the documentation for the updated FSM I'm using called Workflow, and looked here and here. The Advanced Rails Recipe focuses on records (quizzes) that already exist, and doesn't cover creating new ones. The Workflow docs don't cover any code for controllers or views, so I've no idea what to do with all this model magic, and the last two links barely touch on implementation either. From the aforementioned resources, I have a good understanding of what a FSM in Rails is and how to play with it in the console or IRB, but I've got very little direction or understanding how to implement one into my Rails app. What I would like is this: a simple, multi-step user signup process. Step 1: User enters in their critical details (with validations). Step 2: User enters in their search criteria, for their profile (with validations). Step 3: User agrees to the Terms of Service (with validations). Step 4: User is greeted by a confirmation page, including a link that takes them to their newly created account. I'd also like full navigation between the steps and full capture (saves to the database) with each transition. Can someone please give me a clear implementation of something similar to this? I would LOVE an example app that includes a multi-step signup process where I can look at the code (FULL source code--models AND controllers and views) under the hood, but I've been unable to find anything like that.   Hi, I am following a tutorial in one of Ryan Bates' Railscasts here. Basically I want a form where there are 2 drop down menus, the contents of one are dependent on the other. I have Years and Courses, where Years HABMT Courses and Courses HABTM Years. • Serializing and deserializing a map with key as string

  Hi! I am intending to serialize and deserialize a hashmap whose key is a string. From Josh Bloch's Effective Java, I understand the following. P.222 "For example, consider the case of a harsh table. The physical representation is a sequence of hash buckets containing key-value entries. Which bucket an entry is placed in is a function of the hash code of the key, which is not, in general guaranteed to be the same from JVM implementation to JVM implementation. In fact, it isn't even guranteed to be the same from run to run on the same JVM implementation. Therefore accepting the default serialized form for a hash table would constitute a serious bug. Serializing and deserializing the hash table could yield an object whose invariants were seriously corrupt." My questions are: 1) In general, would overriding the equals and hashcode of the key class of the map resolve this issue and the map can be correctly restored? 2) If my key is a String and the String class is already overriding the hashCode() method, would I still have problem described above. (I am seeing a bug which makes me think this is probably still a problem even though the key is String with overriding hashCode.) 3)Previously, I get around this issue by serializing an array of entries (key, value) and when deserializing I would reconstruct the map. I am wondering if there is a better approach. 4) If the answers to question 1 and 2 are that I still can't be guaranteed. Could someone explain why? If the hashCodes are the same would they go to the same buckets across JVMs? Thanks, Grace

• Binding update on adds news series to WPF Toolkit chart (instead of replacing/updating series)

  I'm currently recoding a bar chart in my app to make use of the Chart class in the WPF Toolkit. Using MVVM, I'm binding the ItemsSource of a ColumnSeries in my chart to a property on my viewmodel. Here's the relevant XAML: <charting:Chart> <charting:ColumnSeries ItemsSource="{Binding ScoreDistribution.ClassScores}" IndependentValuePath="ClassName" DependentValuePath="Score"/> </charting:Chart> And the property on the viewmodel: // NB: viewmodel derived from Josh Smith's BindableObject public class ExamResultsViewModel : BindableObject { // ... private ScoreDistributionByClass _scoreDistribution; public ScoreDistributionByClass ScoreDistribution { get { return _scoreDistribution; } set { if (_scoreDistribution == value) { return; } _scoreDistribution = value; RaisePropertyChanged(() => ScoreDistribution); } } However, when I update the ScoreDistribution property (by setting it to a new ScoreDistribution object), the chart gets an additional series (based on the new ScoreDistribution) as well as keeping the original series (based on the previous ScoreDistribution). To illustrate this, here are a couple of screenshots showing the chart before an update (with a single data point in ScoreDistribution.ClassScores) and after it (now with 3 data points in ScoreDistribution.ClassScores): Now, I realise there are other ways I could be doing this (e.g. changing the contents of the original ScoreDistribution object rather than replacing it entirely), but I don't understand why it's going wrong in its current form.   I come from a PHP background and I'm just getting my teeth into some Java. I do plan on using this for an Android App in the distant future, so, hopefully it should all work on Android fine too, although, I imagine this sort of thing works on anything Java related :).

  I am looking for a good solution for a probably typical problem of managing models with HABTM association in Rails. Let's assume that we have two models -- products and categories: Products has_many :categorizations has_many :categories, :through => :categorizations Categories has_many :categorizations has_many :products, :through => :categorizations Categorization belongs_to :product belongs_to :category Pat Shaughnessy is developing modified auto_complete plugin which can allow to manage one-to-many (and many-to-many) association: For someone that would be enough, but I don't really like so many text fields. I guess it is possible to combine the Ryan Bates' screencasts used by Pat in a slightly different way, namely, using one text field with autocomplete: Also it would be better to remove from the list of suggested tasks (one-to-many), or products|categories (many-to-many) those which have been already added. In the case of products-categories relationship, such auto completion would be used both in the form for product, and in the form for category. I hope that there is an existing plugin for that. I am not very experienced in Ruby, and don't really know how to implement such logic by myself. Any help is appreciated!

• Rails can't find my route but it exists!

  Ok I have events that I want to publish/unpublish with an extra action (nonRESTful) I watched Ryan Bates' railscast on this: http://railscasts.com/episodes/35-custom-rest-actions and it got me most of the way. I think the problem is that my route is nested in an /admin section so even though when I run rake routes and get: publish_admin_event PUT /admin/events/:id/publish(.:format) {:controller=>"event_services", :action=>"publish"} This won't work in my /views/admin/index.html.erb file: <%= link_to 'Publish', publish_admin_event(event), :method => :put %> because it claims that path doesn't exist! And neither will this: <%= link_to 'Publish', {:controller => :event_services, :action => :publish}, {:method => :put, :id => event} %> and says that "No route matches {:controller=>"event_services", :action=>"publish"}" so what gives? (And I've tried restarting my server so that isn't it.) EDIT: This DOES work: <%= link_to 'Publish', "/admin/events/" + event.id.to_s + "/publish", :method => :put %> But I'd rather NOT do this.

• PHP: json_decode dumping NULL, BOM not found

  I've been trying to find out why this 'json_encode'd string isn't parsing out correctly, and came across previously answered questions that had the UTF BOM sequence that was throwing the error, but didn't help me here.   Hi I am new to iOS programming and I need a little help. I have a table view cell which is populated by data from a .plist file. I need to be able to make a link within one of the cells. How could I do this? • Code promotion: Enforcing the rules

  So here is our problem: We have a small team of developers with their own ways of doing things-- I am trying to formalize a process in which we are required to promote our code in the following order: Local sandbox Dev UAT Staging Live Developers develop/test as they go on their own sandbox, Dev is its own box that we would use for continuous integration, UAT is another site in IIS on the dev box, which uses our dev database. We then promote to staging, which is a site in IIS on the Live box and using live data (just like the live, hence staging). Then, finally, we promote to live. Here are a few of my questions: 1.) Does this seem to be best practice? If not, what needs to be done differently? 2.) How do I enforce the rules to the developers? Often developers skip steps in order to save time... this should not be tolerated and would be great if it could be physically enforced. 3.) How do I enforce these rules to the business group? The business group just wants to get features out FAST. Do we promote only on certain days? Thanks! Josh

• How to use MySQL geospatial extensions with spherical geometries

  Hi Everyone, I would like to store thousands of latitude/longitude points in a MySQL db. I was successful at setting up the tables and adding the data using the geospatial extensions where the column 'coord' is a Point(lat, lng). Problem: I want to quickly find the 'N' closest entries to latitude 'X' degrees and longitude 'Y' degrees. Since the Distance() function has not yet been implemented, I used GLength() function to calculate the distance between (X,Y) and each of the entries, sorting by ascending distance, and limiting to 'N' results. The problem is that this is not calculating shortest distance with spherical geometry. Which means if Y = 179.9 degrees, the list of closest entries will only include longitudes of starting at 179.9 and decreasing even though closer entries exist with longitudes increasing from -179.9. How does one typically handle the discontinuity in longitude when working with spherical geometries in databases? There has to be an easy solution to this, but I must just be searching for the wrong thing because I have not found anything helpful. Should I just forget the GLength() function and create my own function for calculating angular separation? If I do this, will it still be fast and take advantage of the geospatial extensions? Thanks! josh UPDATE: This is exactly what I am describing above. However, it is only for SQL Server. Apparently SQL Server has a Geometry and Geography datatypes. The geography does exactly what I need. Is there something similar in MySQL?

• Client-Side Dynamic Removal of <script> Tags in <head>

  Is it possible to remove script tags in the <head> of an HTML document client-side and prior to execution of those tags? On the server-side I am able to insert a <script> above all other <script> tags in the <head>, except one, and I would like to be able to remove all subsequent scripts. I do not have the ability to remove <script> tags from the server side. What I've tried: (function (c,h) { var i, s = h.getElementsByTagName('script'); c.log("Num scripts: " + s.length); i = s.length - 1; while(i > 1) { h.removeChild(s[i]); i -= 1; } })(console, document.head); However, the logged number of scripts comes out to only 1, since (as @ryan pointed out) the code is being executed prior to the DOM being ready. Although wrapping the code above in a document.ready event callback does enable proper calculation of the number of <script> tags in the <head>, waiting until the DOM is ready fails to prevent the scripts from loading. Is there a reliable means of manipulating the HTML prior to the DOM being ready? Background If you want more context, this is part of an attempt to consolidate scripts where no option for server-side aggregation is available. Many of the JS libraries being loaded are from a CMS with limited configuration options. The content is mostly static, so there is very little concern about manually aggregating the JavaScript and serving it from a different location. Any suggestions for alternative applicable aggregation techniques would also be welcome.

• Locking database edit by key name

  I need to prevent simultaneous edits to a database field. Users are executing a push operation on a structured data field, so I want to sequence the operations, not simply ignore one edit and take the second. Essentially I want to do synchronized(key name) { push value onto the database field } and set up the synchronized item so that only one operation on "key name" will occur at a time. (note: I'm simplifying, it's not always a simple push). A crude way to do this would be a global synchronization, but that bottlenecks the entire app. All I need to do is sequence two simultaneous writes with the same key, which is rare but annoying occurrence. This is a web-based java app, written with Spring (and using JPA/MySQL). The operation is triggered by a user web service call. (the root cause is when a user sends two simultaneous http requests with the same key). I've glanced through the Doug Lea/Josh Bloch/et al Concurrency in Action, but don't see an obvious solution. Still, this seems simple enough I feel there must be an elegant way to do this.

  I am following Ryan Bates's tutorial on Rails 3 ActionMailer. I generate the mailer in terminal and then establish a setup_mail.rb under config/initializers. • Improved technique to store a filename in a variable?

  Greetings, I need to store the filename of a log into a variable so my script can perform some checks on the daily log files. These logs always have a different name because they have a timestamp in the name. Currently I'm using a hodge podged method that pipes an ls command to sed, sort, cut, and tail in order to get the name out. CRON_LOG=$(ls -1 $LOGS_DIR/fetch_cron_{true,false}_$CRON_DATE*.log 2> /dev/null | sed 's/^[^0-9][^0-9]*\([0-9][0-9]*\).*/\1 &/' | sort -n | cut -d ' ' -f2- | tail -1 ) UPDATE: $CRON_DATE is supplied as an argument to the script. It is the date (to the day) that the log was created on. Sometimes multiple logs will exist for the same day so I want this to get the most recent one. A typical filename is fetch_cron_false_031810090452.log I'm pretty sure I kluged this together from some stuff I found google a few months ago. it works now but I'm not really happy with the technique. I have some ideas about how to do this better but I have had great success on this site before and thought it might be best to refer to the stackoverflow gods first.
