• How successful is GPL in reaching its goals?

  There are, broadly, two types of FOSS licenses when it relates to commercial usage of the code - let's say the GPL-type and the BSD-type. The first is, broadly, restrictive about commercial usage (by usage I also mean modification and redistribution, as well as creating derived works, etc.) of the code under the license, and the second is much more permissive. As I understand, the idea behind GPL-type licenses is to encourage people to abandon the proprietary software model and instead convert to the FOSS code, and the license is the instrument to entice them to do so - i.e. "you can use this nice software, but only if you agree to come to our camp and play by our rules". What I want to ask is - was this strategy successful so far? I.e. are there any major achievements in the form of some big project going from closed to open because of GPL or some software being developed in the open only because GPL made it so? How big is the impact of this strategy - compared, say, to the world where everybody would have BSD-type licenses or release all open-source code under public domain? Note that I am not asking if FOSS model is successful - this is beyond question. What I am asking is if the specific way of enticing people to convert from proprietary to FOSS used by GPL-type and not used by BSD-type licenses was successful. I also don't ask about the merits of GPL itself as the license - just about the fact of its effectiveness.

• OpenGL lighting with dynamic geometry

  I'm currently thinking hard about how to implement lighting in my game. The geometry is quite dynamic (fixed 3D grid with custom geometry in each cell) and needs some light to get more depth and in general look nicer. A scene in my game always contains sunlight and local light sources like lamps (point lights). One can move underground, so sunlight must be able to illuminate as far as it can get. Here's a render of a typical situation: The lamp is positioned behind the wall to the top, and in the hollow cube there's a hole in the back, so that light can shine through. (I don't want soft shadows, this is just for illustration) While spending the whole day searching through Google, I stumbled on some keywords like deferred rendering, forward rendering, ambient occlusion, screen space ambient occlusion etc. Some articles/tutorials even refer to "normal shading", but to be honest I don't really have an idea to even do simple shading. OpenGL of course has a fixed lighting pipeline with 8 possible light sources. However they just illuminate all vertices without checking for occluding geometry. I'd be very thankful if someone could give me some pointers into the right direction. I don't need complete solutions or similar, just good sources with information understandable for someone with nearly no lighting experience (preferably with OpenGL).

• Exporting UV coords from Blender

  So I have searched on google and various other websites but I've not found an answer. The only ones I did find did not work. So my question is how do I get UV coords from blender (2.63)? Currently I'm writing my own custom file exporter, and so far have managed to export vertices and their normals. Is there a way to export the UV coords? N.B. I'm currently try to figure it out using a simple cube that is unwrapped and has a texture applied to it.

• Sampling Heightmap Edges for Normal map

  I use a Sobel filter to generate normal maps from procedural height maps. The heightmaps are 258x258 pixels. I scale my texture coordinates like so: texCoord = (texCoord * (256/258)) + (1/258) Yet even with this I am left with the following problem: As you can see the edges of the normal map still proves to be problematic. Putting the texture wrap mode to "clamp" also proved no help. EDIT: The Sobel Filter function by sampling the 8 surrounding pixels around a given pixel so that a derivative can be calculated in order to find the "normal" of the given pixel. The texture coordinates are instanced once per quad (for the quadtree that makes up the world) and are created as follows (it is quite possible that the problem results from the way I scale and offset the texCoords as seen above): Java: for(int i = 0; i<vertices.length; i++){ Vector2f coord = new Vector2f((vertices[i].x)/(worldSize), (vertices[i].z)/( worldSize)); texCoords[i] = coord; } the quad used for input here rests on the X0Z plane. 'worldSize' is the diameter of the planet. No negative texCoords are seen as the quad used for input for this method is not centered around the origin. Is there something I am missing here? Thanks.

• Bad texture on model with different GPU

  I have some kind of distortion on the texture of my 3D model. It works perfectly well on an AMD GPU, but when testing on a integrated Intel HD graphics card it has a weird issue. I don't have a problem with the rest of my entities as they are not scaled. The models with the problems are scaled, as my engine supports different sizes for the platforms. I am using Ogre3D as rendering engine, and GLSL as shader language. • HLSL 5 interpolation issues

  I'm having issues with the depth components of my shadowmapping shaders. The shadow map rendering shader is fine, and works very well. The world rendering shader is more problematic. The only value which seems to definitely be off is the pixel's position from the light's perspective, which I pass in parallel to the position. struct Pixel { float4 position : SV_Position; float4 light_pos : TEXCOORD2; float3 normal : NORMAL; float2 texcoord : TEXCOORD; }; The reason that I used the semantic 'TEXCOORD2' on the light's pixel position is because I believe that the problem lies with Direct3D's interpolation of values between shaders, and I started trying random semantics and also forcing linear and noperspective interpolations. In the world rendering shader, I observed in the pixel shader that the Z value of light_pos was always extremely close to, but less than the W value. This resulted in a depth result of 0.999 or similar for every pixel. The problem is evident as both of the same vectors were passed to a pixel from the VS, but only one of them showed a change in the PS. I have already thoroughly debugged the matrices' validity, the cbuffers' validity, and the multiplicative validity. I'm very stumped and have been trying to solve this for quite some time. Misc info : The light projection matrix and the camera projection matrix are the same, generated from D3DXMatrixPerspectiveFovLH(), with an FOV of 60.0f * 3.141f / 180.0f, a near clipping plane of 0.1f, and a far clipping plane of 1000.0f. • How do I remove a malformed line from my sources.list?

  I have unistalled and reinstalled the Ubuntu Software Center as per info I found in a similar thread and I got the same response about line 91 or something like that. I just tried to upload a screen shot but since I'm new it won't allow me to. I also can not figure out how to cut and paste anything so I have to hand type what the error screen says, both when I attempt to open the software center and nothing happens, when I try to enter commands into the terminal to uninstall, reinstall, whatever I get the same following: COULD NOT INTITIALIZE THE PACKAGE INFORMATION An unresolvable problem occured while initializing the package information Please report t:his bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E: Malformed line 91 in source list/etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse) E: The list of sources could not be read., E: The package list of status file could not be parsed or opened. How do I report bugs? What can be done about this. I have searched and everything everyone says to do leads me back to the same line error message. So, I don't know how to get to line 91 in the source list; to tell you what it says. Sorry, I'm really new to this. That is what I need is to find out how to get there and fix what it says. I would really like to NOT have to re partition my hard drive and start from scratch, so I'm really looking forward to getting this problem solved. I need to be able to install new software.

• Complex shading using one single (small) texture

  Recently I stumbled upon a demo reel in UDK about how one can attain beautiful results using just one (rather tiny) texture that's being sent to the shader pipeline. The famous link is this one. Basically, the author states that they've used just one texture and give a snapshot of the technique here. I see that every RGBA channel contains different grayscale information.. and that info could be used to inside a shader to obtain a colour blended output. The problem is that the reel displays a fairly complex scene. To top that, the author even makes use of a normal map. How did they manage to fit a normal map in an already cluttered texture? It makes sense to have a half-space normal map by using only RG from an RGB texture, but what about the rest of the information? Since it was proven to be possible, could someone please explain how it was done (the big picture, not the dirty details!)!? Here's the texture being used. Click to see in full size.

• What languages should a microISV use to write commercial software?

  I've been writing software in Java for many years now, but it was always for internal applications that would be deployed to a server. I'd like to get into writing desktop applications now but I don't know where to start. I've written a few Java/Swing applications but again they were for internal use. My understanding is that Java and other semi-compiled and interpreted languages are too easy to reverse engineer, making them unsuitable for commercial software. I am aware that there are compilers for Java and some other interpreted language, but I've also heard that they are pricey and/or unreliable. Assuming I start a microISV and wish to develop and sell applications to a broad audience, what's my best bet? I would prefer something that can be written close to once, and compiled for different operating systems but I am not opposed to .NET and a Windows-only audience if other languages would compromise the experience (installation ease & user experience) in Windows. My only issue there is that I don't have a large starting budget and paying out the wazoo for the required development tools is not really in the cards.

• Have any software engineers gotten math degrees later in their careers?

  I have a bachelors in computer science and worked the last 12 years as a software engineer. I'm bored with doing general development work, so I want to specialize. I'm thinking about getting a master's degree in math so I can build math models and write algorithms to implement them. I'm unsure what type of work I'd do (financial, gaming, graphics, science, research, etc) but I'm open minded. I would need to refresh my undergrad math skills (which are old and faded), but I loved algebra and calculus. I've been working with couple statisticians so I've been finding myself more interested in statistics. Since I'm a parent supporting a household, I would have to continue working while studying. Have any software engineers taken this route? (Specifically, going from BS in comp sci to MS in math.) If so, what advice do you have for coursework, financing, and getting a job that combines programming with advanced math? How abundant are these kinds of jobs? I'm not sure where one starts. Also, how do you hop from a BS to an MS in a different subject?

• iPad Safari's mapping of mouse events to touch events in image-maps

  My website makes extensive use of image-maps. The images are of pages from a medieval manuscript. The mouseOver event of the AREA tags has a tooltip attached to it, which displays a modern typographic transcription of the ancient script for the line the mouse is hovering over. I just checked my website out on the iPad at the Apple store. The iPad is many respects a joy to use, however, I am wondering about Apple's mapping of the mouseEvents to the finger-touch events. Apple probably had a good reason for doing things as they did, but their choices seem counterintuitive an overly complicated to me. Specifically, the iPad Safari browser clearly was responding to both fingerDown and fingerTap, and in different ways. When I tapped an area of the image-map, the tooltip wired to the mouse-over event pf the AREA tag was displayed, and remained visible until I tapped somewhere else. When I held my finger down on an area of the image-map, the area changed color. So if iPad Safari detects a mouseOver eventhandler, it executes the mouseOver code and apparently prevents the "click" event from propagating, so that if you also have something wired to the click event, it doesn't work? Is that right? But more importantly, why isn't fingerDown the iPad-Safari counterpart for mouseOver? FingerDown seems a more likely candidate than Tap when mapping the mousePOver event. I would have expected things to be mapped in this way: MouseClick : FingerTap (i.e. finger down and then immediately up) MouseOver : FingerDown (finger down and stays on the spot) If Apple had treated fingerDown as the counterpart to mouseOver, then the tooltip could be displayed upon FingerDown and made invisible again on fingerUp, which would be the counterpart to mouseOut. Perhaps someone could enlighten me about the thinking process that led Apple to these particular mouse-to-touch event-mappings? Thanks

• IIS 6 with wildcard mapping and UNC virtual directory problem

  Hi. On our production servers (win 2003 with IIS6 and load balanced with an F5 BIGIP), we have a problem when introducing wildcardmapping on IIS6. We use .net Framework 3.5 SP1. The issue manifests itself as by the server only sometimes serving the images stored on a virtual directory pointing to a UNC path. Sometimes the images are displayed, and sometimes not. Removing the wildcard mapping solved this problem. I will need wildcard mapping on the server for future features, so any help/pointers to if this is a known problem will be very helpful. In advance, thanks for any help. • Inheritance mapping with Fluent NHibernate

  Below is an example of how I currently use automapping overrides to set up a my db representation of inheritance. It gets the job done functionality wise BUT by using some internal default values. For example, the discriminator column name winds up being the literal value 'discriminator' instead of "ActivityType, and the discriminator values are the fully qualified type of each class, instead of "ACCOUNT" and "PROJECT". I am guessing that this is a bug that doesn't get much attention now that conventions are preferred, and that the convention approach works correctly. I am looking for a sample of usage.   I'm using FreeType in order to allow fonts to be used in OpenGL. However, I'm having a problem where I cannot change the font colour whenever I do texture mapping. No matter what I select using glColor3f it will just come out white. • NHibernate slow mapping

  My question is what can I do to determine the cause of the slowness, or what can I do to speed it up without knowing the exact cause. I am running a simple query and it appears that the mapping back to the entities is taking taking forever. The result set is 350, which is not much data in my opinion. IRepository repo = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<IRepository>(); var q = repo.Query<Order>(item => item.Ordereddate > DateTime.Now.AddDays(-40)); foreach (var order in q) { Console.WriteLine(order.TransactionNumber); } The profiler is telling me it is executing the query 7ms / 35257ms, I am assuming that the former is the actual response from the db and the latter is the time it takes NH to do it's magic. 35 seconds is too long. This is a simple mapping, one table, nested components, using fluent interface to do mappings. I just start up a simple console app and run the one query, the slowness is measured after the SessionFactory is initialized, there should only be one session, and I am not using a transaction.   I am following the http://wiki.fluentnhibernate.org/Getting%5Fstarted tutorial to create my first NHibernate project with Fluent NHibernate I have 2 tables 1) Account with fields Id AccountHolderName AccountTypeId 2) AccountType with fields Id AccountTypeName Right now the account types can be Savings or Current So the table AccountTypes stores 2 rows 1 - Savings 2 - Current For AccoutType table I have defined enum public enum AccountType { Savings=1, Current=2 } For Account table I define the entity class public class Account { public virtual int Id {get; private set;} public virtual string AccountHolderName {get; set;} public virtual string AccountType {get; set;} } The fluent nhibernate mappings are: public AgencyMap() { Id(o => o.Id); Map(o => o.AccountHolderName); Map(o => o.AccountType); } When I try to run the solution, it gives an exception - InnerException = {"(XmlDocument)(2,4): XML validation error: The element 'class' in namespace 'urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'meta, subselect, cache, synchronize, comment, tuplizer, id, composite-id' in namespace 'ur... I guess that is because I have not speciofied any mapping for AccountType. The questions are: How can I use AccountType enum instead of a AccountType class? Maybe I am going on wrong track. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks!

  I´m trying to use an external XML file to map the output from a stored procedure into an instance of a class. The problem is that my class is of a generic type: public class MyValue<T> { public T Value { get; set; } } Searching through a lot of blogs an articles I've managed to get this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Database Name="" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/linqtosql/mapping/2007"> <Table Name="MyValue" Member="MyNamespace.MyValue`1" > <Type Name="MyNamespace.MyValue`1"> <Column Name="Category" Member="Value" DbType="VarChar(100)" /> </Type> </Table> <Function Method="GetResourceCategories" Name="myprefix_GetResourceCategories" > <ElementType Name="MyNamespace.MyValue`1"/> </Function> </Database> The MyNamespace.MyValue`1 trick works fine, and the class is recognized. I expect four rows from the stored procedure, and I'm getting four MyValue<string> instances, but the big problem is that the property Value for the all four instances is null. The property is not getting mapped and I don't really get why. Maybe worth noting that the property Value is generic, and that when the mapping is done using attributes it works perfect. Anyone have a clue?   Hi all I am struggling a little in getting my mapping right. What I have is a single self joined table of look up values of certain types. Each lookup can have a parent, which can be of a different type. For simplicities sake lets take the Country and State example. • Association Mapping Details confusion?

  I have never understood why the associations in EntityFramework look the way they do in the Mapping Details window. When I select the line between 2 tables for an association, for example FK_ApplicationSectionsNodes_FormItems, it shows this: Association Maps to ApplicationSectionNodes FormItems (key symbol) FormItemId:Int32 <--> FormItemId:int ApplicationSectionNodes (key symbol) NodeId:Int32 <--> (key symbol) NodeId : int Fortunately this one was create automatically for me based on the foreign key constraints in my database, but whenever no constraints exist, I have a hard to creating associations manually(when the database doesn't have a diagram setup) because I don't understand the mapping details for associations. FormItems table has a primary key identity column FormItemId, and ApplicationSectionNodes contains a FormItemId column that is the foreign key and has NodeId as a primary key identity column. What really makes no sense to me is why the association has anything listed about the NodeId, when NodeId doesn't have anything to do with the foreign key relationship? (It's even more confusing with self referencing relationships, but maybe if I could understand the above case I'd have a better handle).
