  • Regular Expressions Quick Reference

    The Regular-Expressions.info website has a new quick reference to regular expressions that lists all of the regex syntax in one single table along with a link to the tutorial section that explains the syntax. The quick reference is ordered by syntax whereas the full reference tables are ordered by feature. There are multiple entries for some of the syntax as different regex flavors may use the same syntax for different features. Use the quick reference if you’ve seen some syntax in somebody else’s regex and you have no idea what feature that syntax is for. Use the full reference tables if you already know the feature you want but forgot which syntax to use. Of course, an even quicker reference is to paste your regex into RegexBuddy, select the application you’re working with, and click on the part of the regex you don’t understand. RegexBuddy then selects the corresponding node in its regex tree which summarizes exactly what the syntax you clicked on does in your regex. If you need more information, press F1 or click the Explain Token button to open the relevant page in the regex tutorial in RegexBuddy’s help file.

  • Is it a good idea to define a variable in a local block for a case of a switch statement?

    I have a rather long switch-case statement. Some of the cases are really short and trivial. A few are longer and need some variables that are never used anywhere else, like this: switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: { int specialVariable = 5; // Do something complex with specialVariable } break; } The alternative would be to declare that variable before going into the switch like this: int specialVariable = 5; switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: // Do something complex with specialVariable break; } This can get rather confusing since it is not clear to which case the variable belongs and it uses some unnecessary memory. However, I have never seen this usage anywhere else. Do you think it is a good idea to declare variables locally in a block for a single case?

  • Specification: Use cases for CRUD

    I am writing a Product requirements specification. In this document I must describe the ways that the user can interact with the system in a very high level. Several of these operations are "Create-Read-Update-Delete" on some objects. The question is, when writing use cases for these operations, what is the right way to do so? Can I write only one Use Case called "Manage Object x" and then have these operations as included Use Cases? Or do I have to create one use case per operation, per object? The problem I see with the last approach is that I would be writing quite a few pages that I feel do not really contribute to the understanding of the problem. What is the best practice?

  • sql query where parameters null not null

    I am trying to do a sql query and to build the where condition dynamically depending if the parameters are null or no. I have something like this: SELECT tblOrder.ProdOrder, tblOrder.Customer FROM tblOrder CASE WHEN @OrderId IS NOT NULL THEN WHERE tblOrder.OrderId = @OrderId ELSE END CASE WHEN @OrderCustomer IS NOT NULL THEN AND tblOrder.OrderCustomer = @OrderCustomer ELSE END END This doesn't work, but this is just a small prototype how to assemble the query, so if the orderid is not null include in the where clause, or if the ordercustomer is not null include in the where clause. But I see problem here, for example if the ordercustomer is not null but the orderid is null, there will be error because the where keyword is not included. Any advice how I can tackle this problem.   • How can you control the speed of fan that comes with the Antec Sonata III case from the outside?

    The Antec Sonata III case comes with a nice 120mm fan that has a 3 speed switch. Most of the time the fan is fine on low, but for games or other taxing workloads I need to switch it to medium or high. Opening the case every time I want to change the setting is kind of a pain. Has anyone figured out a way to control the speed from the outside of the case without going nuclear (e.g. cutting holes in the case)? Other than this annoyance I like the case and the fan that comes with it.

  • Are there any actual case studies on rewrites of software success/failure rates?

    I've seen multiple posts about rewrites of applications being bad, peoples experiences about it here on Programmers, and an article I've ready by Joel Splosky on the subject, but no hard evidence of case studies. Other than the two examples Joel gave and some other posts here, what do you do with a bad codebase and how do you decide what to do with it based on real studies? For the case in point, there are two clients I know of that both have old legacy code. They keep limping along with it because as one of them found out, a rewrite was a disaster, it was expensive and didn't really work to improve the code much. That customer has some very complicated business logic as the rewriters quickly found out. In both cases, these are mission critical applications that brings in a lot of revenue for the company. The one that attempted the rewrite felt that they would hit a brick wall at some point if the legacy software didn't get upgraded at some point in the future. To me, that kind of risk warrants research and analysis to ensure a successful path. My question is have there been actual case studies that have investigated this? I wouldn't want to attempt a major rewrite without knowing some best practices, pitfalls, and successes based on actual studies. Aftermath: okay, I was wrong, I did find one article: Rewrite or Reuse. They did a study on a Cobol app that was converted to Java.

  • Cheap desktop computer in 19" rack-mountable form-factor?

    I'm a high school teacher at a small private school. As of this year, we have SMARTBoards in every classroom (though I've had one in the class I share for two years now). The classrooms themselves don't have computers in them, so we teachers bring our laptops to class and connect them to the boards. This has several disadvantages: This takes a few minutes while we wait for the board to boot up and then orient the board to our individual laptop -- we have to do this every time b/c different teachers have different laptops requiring different orientations. This isn't ideal because when you only have 43 minutes per class period, waiting five minutes just to get started is a real waste. Carrying your laptop to class doesn't sound so bad until you consider that we're also carrying textbooks and piles of student papers, and we're carrying it all through crowded high school hallways. More than one laptop has fallen THUNK to the floor, with dire consequences. We feel we could eliminate the need to use our laptops with the SMARTBoards if we had a dedicated computer in each classroom hooked up to the board at all times. Each board set-up is connected to a podium with a standard 19" rack in it, currently housing a power supply and DVD player. There're plenty of rack spaces available. So I'm thinking: maybe we could get some inexpensive computers in a 19" rack-mountable form factor, install them in the podiums, and connect them to the boards on a permanent basis. Any suggestions?

    As computers become faster and generate more heat it gets more important to have good ventilation, but that also increases the amount of dust sticking to the components of the computer. It's of course better to make sure the computer never gets dusty by vacuum cleaning around it (not in it) frequently. But what to do if it's already to late? I've heard that vacuum cleaning the computer itself is very bad, since it can cause static electricity that hurts the computer. So, Does anyone have any tips for how to remove dust from your computer?

  • How to remove the smell of cigarette from the computer?

    So I'm a smoker, and of course I smoke in front of the computer when I'm at home. On last Friday I moved out from my mothers house to my own, and since the computers were always turned on and the room was a room that everybody could smoke, the smell didn't bother me. At my new home, I turned them on, about 15 minutes ago, and I'm dying because of the smell of cigarette ( this may be kind of stupid from a smoker, but I hope some of you understand ). This solution has to be relatively quick, because I can't stay without the desktop and the server for one week, for example. Tomorrow, I'm going to open them both, and remove all dust there is inside, this should clear some of the smell, but probably won't remove it completely. Does anyone know a technique to get rid of the smell?

  • 2.5" SSD in a 3.5" desktop drive bay normal?

    I'm a little out of touch with modern desktop builds, but I recently built a new machine anyway. I want to pick up a SSD for my I/O intensive apps (EverQuest 2 and Flash CS4 mostly), but I'm having trouble finding any in the 3.5" form factor. Is this expected, or do I fail at product search? And, if it is expected, do 2.5" SSDs come with an adapter to fit them in my desktop machine, or will I need to purchase one separately? And, finally, if I do need to purchase an adapter, are they pretty standard or are some better than others. General advice is most welcomed, though specific product recommendations in addition would be helpful!

  • USB port causing device problems after new motherboard upgrade

    I'm looking into a PC with an issue with one of the front USB ports (perhaps both). It was working before a motherboard upgrade but since then, a USB drive was inserted, overheated and does not appear to be working. Then a phone (with USB charging) was plugged in, and the phone OS suspended. Removing and re-inserting the battery led to the phone (and hence battery) working, however the battery no longer charges (including with a wall charger). It seems too much to be a coincidence and am wondering what the issue may be? Ideas so far are short circuiting, or over-current to the USB ports. Note: Did not occur to me, so details are not 100% accurate or complete. Feel free to ask for missing info that I may have forgotten though.

  • PHP-REGEX: accented letters matches non-accented ones, and visceversa. How to achive it?

    I want to do the typical higlight code. So I have something like: $valor = preg_replace("/(".$_REQUEST['txt_search'].")/iu", "<span style='background-color:yellow; font-weight:bold;'>\\1</span>", $valor); Now, the request word could be something like "josé". And with it, I want "jose" or "JOSÉ" or "José" or ... highlighted too. With this expression, if I write "josé", it matches "josé" and "JOSÉ" (and all the case variants). It always matches the accented variants only. If I search "jose", it matches "JOSE", "jose", "Jose"... but not the accented ones. So I've partially what I want, cause I have case insensitive on accented and non-accented separately. I need it fully combined, wich means accent (unicode) insensitive, so I can search "jose", and highlight "josé", "josÉ", "José", "JOSE", "JOSÉ", "JoSé", ... I don't want to do a replace of accents on the word, cause when I print it on screen I need to see the real word as it comes. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi! I write program to communicate with modem (it useing Hayes commands) and this is working. GUI is programmed with QT, but communication with COM port is write with winapi library. I have problem when I want to send with my program message from one computer to another, i can't send Polish chars (they are repleaced by '?'), how can I fix it ? Does anyone have idea ?? And I have one more problem, I can't send message from my program to Microsoft HyperTerminal, HyperTerminal receive something, but not that what I send.     Here is the pseudo-code for my inline query in my code: select columnOne from myTable where columnOne = '#variableOne#' if len(variableTwo) gt 0 and columnTwo = '#variableTwo#' end I would like to move this into a stored procedure but am having trouble building the query correctly. I assume it would be something like select columnOne from myTable where columnOne = @variableOne CASE WHEN len(@variableTwo) <> 0 THEN and columnTwo = @variableTwo END This is giving me a syntax error. Could someone tell me what I've got wrong. Also, I would like to keep it to only one query and not just have one if statement. Also, I do not want to build the sql in the stored procedure and run Exec() on it.

  • MySQL Update Trigger with Conditions

    I have a PHP app that inserts 'Pass', 'Fail' or 'NA' into fields TEST1, TEST2, TEST3... through TEST15. I have a field called OVERALL that needs to be automatically updated with 'FAIL' if any of the TEST1-TEST15 fields contains 'Fail'. I'm pretty sure I need to use a trigger containing the update statement and either CASE or IF, but I haven't been able to nail down the exact syntax. Can anyone please help a MySQL noob?     I have been scripting the configuration of our IIS 7.5 instance and through bits and pieces of other peoples scripts I have come up with a syntax that I like: $WebAppPoolUserName = "domain\user" $WebAppPoolPassword = "password" $WebAppPoolNames = @("Test","Test2") ForEach ($WebAppPoolName in $WebAppPoolNames ) { $WebAppPool = New-WebAppPool -Name $WebAppPoolName $WebAppPool.processModel.identityType = "SpecificUser" $WebAppPool.processModel.username = $WebAppPoolUserName $WebAppPool.processModel.password = $WebAppPoolPassword $WebAppPool.managedPipelineMode = "Classic" $WebAppPool.managedRuntimeVersion = "v4.0" $WebAppPool | set-item } I have seen this done a number of different ways that are less terse and I like the way this syntax of setting object properties looks compared to something like what I see on TechNet: Set-ItemProperty 'IIS:\AppPools\DemoPool' -Name recycling.periodicRestart.requests -Value 100000 One thing I haven't been able to figure out though is how to setup recycle schedules using this syntax. This command sets ApplicationPoolDefaults but is ugly: add-webconfiguration system.applicationHost/applicationPools/applicationPoolDefaults/recycling/periodicRestart/schedule -value (New-TimeSpan -h 1 -m 30) I have done this in the past through appcmd using something like the following but I would really like to do all of this through powershell: %appcmd% set apppool "BusinessUserApps" /+recycling.periodicRestart.schedule.[value='01:00:00'] I have tried: $WebAppPool.recycling.periodicRestart.schedule = (New-TimeSpan -h 1 -m 30) This has the odd effect of turning the .schedule property into a timespan until I use $WebAppPool = get-item iis:\AppPools\AppPoolName to refresh the variable. There is also $WebappPool.recycling.periodicRestart.schedule.Collection but there is no add() function on the collection and I haven't found any other way to modify it. Does anyone know of a way I can set scheduled recycle times using syntax consistent with the code I have written above?
