• SQL update a table with a foreign key

  I have a categories table, which one of the fields serves as the foreign key for a sub-categories table. One field that serves as part of the primary key for each table is the language id. I need to update these in both tables. Basically, wherever the language id = x in both tables, I need to set it to y. When I try to do an update on either table, I get a 'The UPDATE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint..' which refers to the foreign key constraint. How can I update the language field on both of these tables?

  if I have a stored procedure say create procure w AS ALTER TABLE t ADD x char(1) UPDATE t set x =1 Even when it lets me create that stored procedure (if I create it when x exists), when it runs, there is an error on the UPDATE statement because column x doesn't exist. What's the conventional way to deal with this, it must come up all the time? I can work around it by putting the UPDATE inside EXEC, is there another/better way? Thanks

• SQL SERVER – How to Get SQL Server Restart Notification?

  Few days back my friend called me to know if there is any tool which can be used to get restart notification about SQL in their environment. I told that SQL Server can do it by itself with some configurations. He was happy and surprised to know that he need not spend any extra money. In SQL Server, we can configure stored procedure(s) to run at start-up of SQL Server. This blog would give steps to achieve how to achieve it. There are many situations where this feature can be used. Below are few. Logging SQL Server startup timings Modify data in some table during startup (i.e. table in tempdb) Sending notification about SQL start. Step 1 – Enable ‘scan for startup procs’ This can be done either using T-SQL or User Interface of Management Studio. EXEC sys.sp_configure N'Show Advanced Options', N'1' GO RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE GO EXEC sys.sp_configure N'scan for startup procs', N'1' GO RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE GO Below is the interface to change the setting. We need to go to “Server” > “Properties” and use “Advanced” tab. “Scan for Startup Procs” is the parameter under “Miscellaneous” section as shown below. We need to make value as “True” and hit OK. Step 2 – Create stored procedure It’s important to note that the procedure is executed after recovery is finished for ALL databases. Here is a sample stored procedure. You can use your own logic in the procedure. CREATE PROCEDURE SQLStartupProc AS BEGIN CREATE TABLE ##ThisTableShouldAlwaysExists (AnyColumn INT) END Step 3 – Set Procedure to run at startup We need to use sp_procoption to mark the procedure to run at startup. Here is the code to let SQL know that this is startup proc. sp_procoption 'SQLStartupProc', 'startup', 'true' This can be used only for procedures in master database. Msg 15398, Level 11, State 1, Procedure sp_procoption, Line 89 Only objects in the master database owned by dbo can have the startup setting changed. We also need to remember that such procedure should not have any input/output parameter. Here is the error which would be raised. Msg 15399, Level 11, State 1, Procedure sp_procoption, Line 107 Could not change startup option because this option is restricted to objects that have no parameters. Verification Here is the query to find which procedures is marked as startup procedures. SELECT name FROM sys.objects WHERE OBJECTPROPERTY(OBJECT_ID, 'ExecIsStartup') = 1 Once this is done, I have restarted SQL instance and here is what we would see in SQL ERRORLOG Launched startup procedure 'SQLStartupProc'. This confirms that stored procedure is executed. You can also notice that this is done after all databases are recovered. Recovery is complete. This is an informational message only. No user action is required. After few days my friend again called me and asked – I want to turn this OFF? • Do I need to do an "apt-get update" after adding a PPA?

  After adding a new ppa to the repository, is it necessary to update the whole database? By "whole database" I mean is it necessary to update index's of each and every packege? If it's not necessary, then how can I update only that specific package whose ppa I have just added into the repository. For example, if I add an ppa by typing the following in terminal, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox then we normally run the following command after it, sudo apt-get update But how can I update the only package which is associated with the above ppa, instead of updating the whole database.

In order to do so, I need the list of updates in the file named "wsusscn2.cab". Is there a well-known page or URL at Microsoft for downloading the most up-to-date version of that file for MBSA offline mode? Thank you.

• Windows server reboot loop - uninstalling hotfixes

  After installing 3 updates, my system is stuck in a reboot loop. I am using server 2008 r2. I have tried deleting pending.xml from the windows directory, so pelase don't suggest that. I tried dism /image:d:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions which completed successfully but did not solve my issue I then tried: dism /image:d:\ /Remove-Package /PackageName: and sucusfully removed one of the 3 updates. The two updates that are left are not listed with the dism get-packages command, but are listed with the get-apppatches command. I cannot find a way to uninstall them with dism however. So my question is, how can I manually uninstall specific updates or hotfixes from within the winre environment?

  I have production DB server (RHEL 5.1) with LSI Megaraid driver loaded during setup via DUD (Driver Upd Diskett). Now I'd like to update kernel and other packeges to 5.4 version. I also downloaded new LSI SCSI driver (megasr-13.11.0922.2009-1-rhel50-u4-all.img ). Could you explain the necessary steps to make this driver visible on boot for new kernel (lets assume, that I've already update kernel to 5.4)? I read the article on Redhat - "How do I add a driver to the initrd.img". Does it contain all the steps I need? Thanks in advance!

• How do I limit the CPU share of TrustedInstaller.exe on a Vista system

  I'm trying to fix a few low end single core desktops running Vista. In normal use they're fast enough not to be a problem. The issue is that because these machines are only on when being used, primarily for school work, windowsupdate begins installing patches it launches TrustedInstaller which in turn hogs 100% of the CPU and renders the machines all but unusable for however long it takes to patch them.

• Centralized Windows/Mac Patch Management that is easy to use

  I'm looking for advice on what patch management solutions you would recommend based upon your experience. I'm also looking for which ones you would not recommend based upon your experience. We have a mixed network of Windows and Mac clients. Our central servers are all Windows servers, although I have considered putting in a Mac server to better handle our Mac clients. The issue we are facing currently is that we need to maintain the patches on all of our third-party applications. Right now we use WSUS, which handles with patching of Windows and some Microsoft products but that is about it. I need something to cover the other applications, specifically things like Adobe products (Reader, Flash, Dreamweaver, etc.) Our network isn't that big (maybe 200 clients) and I don't have a person to dedicate just to patching and maintaining a patch management solution. Thus very large and complicated solutions like System Center are most likely out. I have recently been looking at Dell's Kace K1000 solution (http://www.kace.com/products/systems-management-appliance/). It seems simple and it provides a lot of tools in one package that I would like/need as well. I like the fact that it is self-contained in an appliance and that it is designed for solutions like mine. However, I'm not sure if this is the best solution. I've also looked some at Shavlik's Netchk solution (http://www.shavlik.com/netchk-protect.aspx) but I don't need an anti-virus product. However, it looks like they might have a very good patch database. My question is this: What are your thoughts on these to products? Are there better products out there? Are there issues that I'm not considering? I want something that is very good at patching a broad range of products, that is simple to use, that takes a minimal amount of management (like WSUS), and that (hopefully) works with Mac and Windows.

• Windows crash report pop up 3 times when Windows XP starts after updating IE7 to IE8

  I just updated Internet Explorer 7 to IE 8. After the reboot, I have the Windows XP "send error report" dialog 3 times all with this info in it: AppName: update_kb24b8.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16981 ModName: urlmon.dll ModVer: 8.0.6001.18904 Offset: 0002df76 I uninstalled/updated all of my plugins and I still have this error 3 times each time I log in. Anyone know what is update_kb24b8.exe I didn't found a Microsoft KB with this number... BTW, after these 3 errors, everything s working well, including IE... Thanks!

• How can I tell if a KB or newer has been installed for Windows?

  I have a Windows system that I need to audit. The requirements is that (for example) KB2160329 has been installed onto the system. I know from lots of digging that KB2731847 that we have installed in the environment superseded the earlier KB. MSkbfiles.com works if you know the file name such as TCPIP.SYS. Doesn't do anything if you are just looking for KB Hotfixes. How can I say feed in a script that I'm looking for KB2160329 and it can check for superseded patches? Or is there a website somewhere that I'm missing? [Edited 7 May 2014 8:54am CST] I'm looking for a way to say that KB2731847 which is on the system does fix the same issue (plus more fixes) as KB2160329 which is not in the list as being installed on the system.

However, one module I needed was not loaded. • Config file (App.config) does not update on new installation

  I am creating setup of my project using Visula Studio 2008. I am facing problem in setup installation. If I uninstall old setup (application) and install the new one then config file (App.config) updates the attributes (surely it is new file) of config file but if I install new setup without uninstalling the old one then config file does not update. from config file I mean MyProject.exe.config Why is this behavior of config file. Should it not be updated on installation of the new setup Is this possible to delete and copy the config file of new setup? Is there a way to update only config file forcefully during installation. • Installing Sql Server 2005 SP2 - Getting error on analysis services component

  At first many of the components didn't install and I followed this workaround (fixing user/SID mappings in registry.) After that everything installed successfully except for analysis services. I am getting the exact same error message as before on analysis services. (Are there other users installed by sql server I'm not aware of perhaps?) Do you guys have any ideas? All of my searches seem to just point to that workaround above that I already did. • Prevent Server Restart after Windows Updates

  we have a number of servers in our office, as a small hosting company, and these servers are critical to business, ... web server, mail server, db server, etc. On a semi-regular basis, when the machines get automatic updates, they just automagically reboot themselves in the middle of the night. A number of them have software which must be running on the console session (bad practice, I know, but out of my control). When they reboot themselves, these programs obviously shut down, leaving customers upset and services interrupted. How do you set a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine to NEVER automagically reboot itself after updates? And perhaps, if possible, to instead email someone so that they are aware it needs a pending reboot and can schedule it for the best time? Thanks in advance!

  From Windows Server 2008+, wuauserv is no longer a service that's ran all of the time and is instead ran as a scheduled task. I'm not sure of the exact behavior of how the scheduled task is created as it seems the schedule is generated and edited by another service. Prior to this, we setup nagios to just check for the running service to ensure it was accepting updates. My question is, how does one track the proper execution/running of wuauserv service in Windows Server 2008+ to ensure it is accepting updates with nagios?

• MySQL: "UPDATE command denied to user ''@'localhost'"

  For some reason when I installed MySQL on my machine (a Mac running OS X 10.9) the 'root' MySQL account got messed up and I don't have access to it, but I do have access to the standard MySQL account 'sean@localhost' which I use to log into phpMyAdmin. I am trying to reset the 'root' password by starting the mysqld daemon using the command mysqld --skip-grant-tables and then running the following lines in the mysql shell. mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('MyNewPass') -> WHERE User='root'; mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES; Problem is when I try to run that MySQL string the daemon spits back a ERROR 1142 (42000): UPDATE command denied to user ''@'localhost' for table 'user' as if I didn't use the -u argument when I started the mysql shell, either though I did. Any help is muchly appreciated as I am lost at this point. :/
