  • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the ground up

    - by Chris Thompson
    Hi all, I'm about to start developing a large-scale system and I'm struggling with which direction to proceed. I've done plenty of Java web apps before and I have plenty of experience with servlet containers and GWT and some experience with Spring. The problem is most of my webapps have been thrown together just to be a proof of concept and what I'm struggling with is what set of frameworks to use. I need to have both a browser based application as well as a web service designed to support access from mobile devices (Android and iPhone for now). Ideally, I'd like to design this system in such a way that I don't end up rewriting all of my servlets for each client (browser and phone) although I don't mind having some small checks in there to properly format the data. In addition, although I'm the only developer now, that won't necessarily be the case down the road and I'd like to design something that scales well both with regards to traffic and number of developers (isn't just a nightmare to maintain). So where I am now is planning on using GWT to design the browser-based interface but I'm struggling with how to reuse that code with to present the interface (most likely xml) for the mobile devices. Using GWT RPC would, I think, make it relatively easy to do all of the AJAX in the browser, but might make generating xml for the mobile phones difficult. In addition, I like the idea of using something like Hibernate for persistence and Spring Security to secure the whole thing. Again, I'm not sure how well those will cooperate with GWT (I think Hibernate should be fine...) There's obviously a lot more to this than I've presented here, but I've tried to give you the 5-minute overview. I'm a bit stumped and was wondering if anybody in the community had any experience starting from this place. Does what I'm trying to do make sense? Is it realistic? I have no doubt I can make all of these frameworks speak the same language, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to fight with them. Also, am I missing a framework that would be really beneficial? Thanks in advance and sorry for the relatively broad question... Chris

  • LockMode With Subclasses

    - by Lester
    I'm using Fluent Nhibernate with the following query on DerivedClass which extends BaseClass: var query = Session.CreateCriteria<DerivedClass>().SetLockMode(LockMode.Upgrade) What I want is the lock hints (updlock, rowlock) to be applied to both DerivedClass and BaseClass, but the generated SQL only applies the lock hints to DerivedClass: SELECT * FROM DerivedClass this_ with (updlock, rowlock) inner join [BaseClass] this_1_ on this_.Id=this_1_.Id WHERE ... This is the same situation described in http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-2392 If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

  • ivy dependency on external JAR

    - by Misha Koshelev
    Dear All: I am battling with Ivy (I tried maven but had an event more difficult time setting up the JBoss repository for Hibernate). Quick question - I am using this wonderful package: http://ooweb.sourceforge.net/index.html Unfortunately, the JAR is only available through Sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooweb/files/ooweb/0.8.0/ooweb-0.8.0-bin.tar.gz/download Is there a way to get Ivy to download a specific JAR? For that matter, is it possible to do with Maven? Thank you! Misha

  • Updatable false behvior incosistent

    I need LastUpdatedDttm to be updated by SYSDATE whenever record is updated. But below annoataions do nt work as desired. SYSDATE is inserted only once and not updated for subsequent updations. Also, lastUpdDTTM is not part of sql generated by hibernate. @Generated(GenerationTime.ALWAYS) @Column(name="LAST_UPDATED_DTTM",insertable=false,updatable=true, columnDefinition ="timestamp default SYSDATE") private Date lastUpdDTTM; @Generated(GenerationTime.ALWAYS) @Column(name="CREATED_DTTM", insertable=false, updatable=false) private Date createdDTTM;

  • Porting a Grails application to GAE

    - by xain
    Hi, I currently have a Grails application I'm evaluating to port to Google App Engine and I'd like to know experiences regarding: Acegi security: the application relies on this library to enforce the security. Use of JPA or JDO instead of the hibernate plugin (I'll have to migrate the Domain classes); which one is better ? I have a growing number of pre-generated pdf files I keep uploading; is there any foreseeable problem with this? Thanks in advance.

The table ComputerSystems has three columsn Name, Description and InstallationId. Mappings: I have the following mapping for Installation: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="myProgram.Core" namespace="myProgram"> <class name="Installation" table="Installations" lazy="true"> <id name="Id" column="Id" type="int"> <generator class="native" /> </id> <property name="Name" column="Name" type="string" not-null="true" /> <property name="Description" column="Description" type="string" /> <bag name="ComputerSystems" inverse="true" lazy="true" cascade="all-delete-orphan"> <key column="InstallationId" /> <one-to-many class="ComputerSystem" /> </bag> </class> </hibernate-mapping> I have the following mapping for ComputerSystem: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <id name="Id" column="ID" type="int"> <generator class="native" /> </id> <property name="Name" column="Name" type="string" not-null="true" /> <property name="Description" column="Description" type="string" /> <many-to-one name="Installation" column="InstallationID" cascade="save-update" not-null="true" /> Classes: The Installation class is: public class Installation { public virtual String Description { get; set; } public virtual String Name { get; set; } public virtual IList<ComputerSystem> ComputerSystems { get { if (_computerSystemItems== null) { lock (this) { if (_computerSystemItems== null) _computerSystemItems= new List<ComputerSystem>(); } } return _computerSystemItems; } set { _computerSystemItems= value; } } protected IList<ComputerSystem> _computerSystemItems; public Installation() { Description = ""; Name= ""; } } The ComputerSystem class is: public class ComputerSystem { public virtual String Name { get; set; } public virtual String Description { get; set; } public virtual Installation Installation { get; set; } } The issue is that I get an error when trying to delete an installation that contains a ComputerSystem.   • What's your "best practice" for the first Java EE Spring project?

    - by cringe
    I'm currently trying to get into the Java EE development with the Spring framework. As I'm new to Spring, it is hard to imaging how a good running project should start off. Do you have any best practices, tipps or major DO NOTs for a starter? How did you start with Spring - big project or small tutorial-like applications? Which technology did you use right away: AOP, complex Hibernate...

  • Good examples of .NET (C#) open source projects ported to Java?

    - by JasDev
    I notice several well-known projects in java that were ported to C# .NET. Some examples: Hibernate - NHibernate JUnit -- NUnit Ant -- NAnt Lucene -- Lucene.Net, NLucene iText -- iTextSharp log4j -- log4net Quartz -- Quartz.NET I was curious about the reverse situation: what are the notable .NET projects that have been ported to the java world? I looked at the list of projects at http://csharp-source.net but didn't see any obvious ones.

  • Programmatically loading Entity classes with JPA 2.0?

    - by Dennetik
    With Hibernate you can load your Entity classes as: sessionFactory = new AnnotationConfiguration() .addPackage("test.animals") .addAnnotatedClass(Flight.class) .addAnnotatedClass(Sky.class) .addAnnotatedClass(Person.class) .addAnnotatedClass(Dog.class); Is there a way to do the same thing - programmatically loading your Entity classes - in a JPA 2.0 compliant way?

  • JSF data transfer between UI and business layer

    - by Ram
    Hi, We are using JSF in UI, Spring in business layer, Hibernate in persistence layer. Now my question is how to pass data from the JSF UI to spring business layer. Can I directly use my business object in my backing bean or should I transfer data between the layer through DTO? Can one explain me with clear explanation if possible with piece of code and that related websites?

  • What is the best way to scale images in Java?

    - by Peter Kelley
    I have a web application written in Java (Spring, Hibernate/JPA, Struts2) where users can upload images and store them in the file system. I would like to scale those images so that they are of a consistent size for display on the site. What libraries or built in functions will offer the best results? I will consider the following criteria in making my decision (in this order): Free/Open Source (essential) Easy to implement Quality of results Performance Size of executable

  • Spring aspectj jar not configured correctly

    - by newguy
    I am getting this error when I tried to use a JPA object created by Roo. Entity manager has not been injected (is the Spring Aspects JAR configured as an AJC/AJDT aspects library?) I have followed some online advice to add the spring-aspects.jar to aspectj path in Eclipse but I still get this error. Does anyone know how to solve this? The environment I am using is Spring 3.0.5, Hibernate 3.6 and JBoss 6.0.0.Final.

  • How to cache queries in EJB and return result efficient (performance POV)

    - by Maxym
    I use JBoss EJB 3.0 implementation (JBoss 4.2.3 server) At the beginning I created native query all the time using construction like Query query = entityManager.createNativeQuery("select * from _table_"); Of couse it is not that efficient, I performed some tests and found out that it really takes a lot of time... Then I found a better way to deal with it, to use annotation to define native queries: @NamedNativeQuery( name = "fetchData", value = "select * from _table_", resultClass=Entity.class ) and then just use it Query query = entityManager.createNamedQuery("fetchData"); the performance of code line above is two times better than where I started from, but still not that good as I expected... then I found that I can switch to Hibernate annotation for NamedNativeQuery (anyway, JBoss's implementation of EJB is based on Hibernate), and add one more thing: @NamedNativeQuery( name = "fetchData2", value = "select * from _table_", resultClass=Entity.class, readOnly=true) readOnly - marks whether the results are fetched in read-only mode or not. It sounds good, because at least in this case of mine I don't need to update data, I wanna just fetch it for report. When I started server to measure performance I noticed that query without readOnly=true (by default it is false) returns result with each iteration better and better, and at the same time another one (fetchData2) works like "stable" and with time difference between them is shorter and shorter, and after 5 iterations speed of both was almost the same... The questions are: 1) is there any other way to speed query using up? Seems that named queries should be prepared once, but I can't say it... In fact if to create query once and then just use it it would be better from performance point of view, but it is problematic to cache this object, because after creating query I can set parameters (when I use ":variable" in query), and it changes query object (isn't it?). well, is here any way to cache them? Or named query is the best option I can use? 2) any other approaches how to make results retrieveng faster. I mean, for instance I don't need those Entities to be attached, I won't update them, all I need is just fetch collection of data. Maybe readOnly is the only available way, so I can't speed it up, but who knows :) P.S. I don't ask about DB performance, all I need now is how not to create query all the time, so use it efficient, and to "allow" EJB to do less job with the same result concerning data returning.
