• Does Windows Move command delete the file only on successful completion?

  This may be a stupid question, but I'm erring on the side of caution here. If I'm using Windows command line/batch files to Move a file from one server to another and we have a network failure, what will happen to the original file? I would assume it remains untouched until fully moved, and then deleted, but I need to be sure. My fear is that it deletes bytes as they are moved, which would be bad. If that isn't the case, is there a better way than Copying the file and Deleting after the copy completes? Thanks for your help. EDIT: I suppose super user would have been better. This is part of a job kicked off by code, so my first thought was to come here.

• Is it possible to not trigger my normal search highlighting when using search as a movement?

  When I do a search in vim, I like to have my results highlighted and super-visible, so I give them a bright yellow background and a black foreground in my .vimrc. " When highlighting search terms, make sure text is contrasting colors :highlight Search guibg=yellow guifg=black (This is for GUI versions of vim, like MacVim or Gvim; for command-line, you'd use ctermbg and ctermfg.) But I sometimes use search as a movement, as in c/\foo - "change from the cursor to the next occurrence of foo." In that case, I don't want all the occurrences of foo to be highlighted. Can I turn off highlighting in cases where search is used as a movement?

• Key Repeat no longer works on Windows 7 Lenovo Windows 700 laptop

  The title pretty much sums up my problem. I can type fine, but holding down the key doesn't repeat, including the arrow keys which is super-annoying. "Filter Keys" in the Ease of access center is not turned on, so that's not the problem. Any ideas? UPDATE Also, the numeric keypad on the right is not working at all -- not just that it won't repeat, but there is no response at all to the numbers, the enter key, the numlk key. The purple Fn+NumLk which usually opens the calc program doesn't work. It's like it's totally disconnected.

• "System call failed" error when trying to open "My Computer" etc. under the Start menu! What is happening?

  When I go to the start menu I can load program icons but if I click on Documents, My Pictures, My Computer, Default Programs...all the options on the right part--I get "System call failed". How do I solve ths? Is my HD failing? Also, I don't know if it's connected but yesterday my uTorrent stopped working in a way it has never done before. I'm not able to download torrent files. In the program I get "socket unreacheable..." Also, for the last 2 days my internet has been super-slow. I checked Kaspersky for viruses. It says: "No active threats". Windows 7 64-bit.

• Ultra-lightweight web browser?

  Are there any good super-lightweight graphical web browsers out there? I'd like to be able to browse the web on an old PC, but the mainstream crop of browsers is just too heavy, and I don't want to resort to something like Lynx. There must be something decent out there that'll fit in 16 or 32MB of RAM comfortably. 100% standards compliance isn't necessary, but I'd like something that supports the most widely used parts of CSS and JavaScript. The goal is to get 98% of sites usable in a nice, graphical format.

• How to change color of a cell in one sheet if its value increases or decreases from another cell value in a different sheet

  I am putting together a workbook with 52 sheets for the weeks in the year. In this workbook there are multiple columns for percentages on each sheet. I want to be able to change the color of each cell based on whethernit increases (green) or decreases (red) from the same cell in the previous sheet. I have the formula i.e. =IF(ISERROR(B4/D4),"0", B4/D4) to calculate my percentages but I don't know how to put the reference in for this change. Any help?

• BSOD doing wireless connection repair

  (This should maybe be asked on Super User, but currently it is only for beta users.) We have a Dell Latitude X1 which always gets a BSOD (page fault in non page area) after repair on wireless. Wireless works as long as we do not do repair. Have tried the following with no success: Have updated BIOS to latest version and updated drivers for Intel wireless to the latest version. Any other suggestions? For now we just do not do repair and maybe that is the solution?

  When searching for history or favorites, the search phrase has to be an exact substring of the URL or title. For example super awesome wouldn't match this page. Can the criteria be made more liberal? When an item that was matched by its title is selected from the suggestion list, the title is filled in in place of the URL. The filled in part sometimes starts from the middle of a URL or a title. Can either of these behaviors be changed? Can you redirect unresolved addresses to the default search engine or a custom URL? In Firefox you can go to about:config and set keyword.URL to http://www.google.com/search?btnI&q=. Can you remove or hide the web search field? In Camino, Cruz, and Fluid it can be resized to zero width.

• How to reference individual cells in Excel to variable data from records in an external SQL table

  I have a SQL table containing date oriented financial data eg. multiple daily records with fields for Date, Account code and Value. I want to set up dynamic links (formulas) from cells in an Excel speadsheet to this data so when the spreadsheet is loaded the data is fetched from all the relevant records. The spreadsheet has the Account codes on the x axis and Dates on the y. Each day the SQL table has new data in it for the new day and I want the spreadsheet to reference this new data for the column for the new day. Any ideas? I have seen how you can generally bring in data from a SQL table (in our case using ODBC as it is not MS SQL) but the data is not simply bringing in multiple records as you would a CVS file but specific records in the SQL table referencing to specific cells and columns in the spreadsheet.

• Root cause for high CPU usage; which measurement to trust more: Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer?

  Consider this Windows 8.1 machine (in-place upgrade from Windows 8) with differing reports on its CPU usage. The machine is idle, and has been for 3 days. There are no CPU intensive tasks running currently nor over the 3 day idle period. Windows Task Manager is reporting CPU usage constantly at an incredibly high value (and increasing over time!) at around 75%. Process Explorer from SysInternals reports that the CPU usage is much different at around 42% How does Process Explorer report 42.14% usage, but its columns report Idle at 57%, with the sum of the other processes not even approaching 10%? Which of these two values should I trust more, and why should it be trusted over the other measurement? How can I actually determine which process is causing Task Manager to report its values? • Deleting Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.6.4

  Does anyone know how to delete Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.6.4? Before answering: sudo rm -rf /whateverthetimemachineis does not work Disabling the ACL permissions first with sudo fsaclctl -p /whatever -d does not work, sudo: fsaclctl: command not found Use the delete all backup feature in Time Machine... this is slow as hell, would take days. Need a command line solution. No I don't want to reformat the drive, I have other content on it, and no don't say I should have separated on two partition or two drives, I did it this say since partitions cannot be dynamically changed, and two drives is annoying since, whats the point of having a big drive?... plus has no relation to the issue at hand. Already googlied for hours and read everything on Super User, nothing working. and all solutions are the first 4. Any clues?

• Browser which shows what's been downloaded so far regardless of formatting and layout ?

  Every now and then a website becomes super-slow (but not broken) because there are too many people looking at it at the same time. When I try and view such a site, say with Firefox, I can see that it is downloading all sorts of components of the site because of the progress information printed at the bottom of the window and I'm sitting there thinking "If only the browser would show me what it's got so far. I don't care if its a jumbled mess, I just want to see what you've got". Does any browser offer such an option?

• Internet connection too slow

  I now think that it is the ISP. After a full scan of my system. With super antispyware, avast, norton and spybot. Internet connection is still slow. And the truth is we have recently upgraded the connection from 512 kbps to 768. And I get a .25 Mbps at speedtest.net which is equivalent to 256 Kbps. Its not even half of the advertised speed. Is it normal for ISP's to just limit your bandwidth if you are always downloading something from the internet? Are they entitled to do this.

• Has anyboy been able to install Pantograph for Blender on Windows?

  I am specially interested on if somebody is actually doing/maintaining an installer for Windows, as there are quite several issues when installing all dependencies, etc. (for example, there might be someone already doing a Installbuilder installer for it and am just not aware of the matter) If not, at least if someone got it working and has some key tip to share. I am never able to fully get it all up and running. I'd love to have a not super complex way to install each new build of this great vector rendering module for Blender. For example, Student K300997203 has a row containing Course FHS120100417, a score of 3, and "Pre" AND Student K300997203 has a row containing Course FHS120100417, a score of 4, and "Post". How can I calculate a cell value as the score in the row containing "Post" minus the score in the row containing "Pre"?

• MacBook Pro USB port provides more current in Mac OS X than in Windows

  I have a MacBook Pro with both Mac OS X Lion and Windows (under BootCamp) installed. While in Windows, I tried to charge my iPad 3 via the USB port. The iPad says "Not charging", but really, it does, just super slow (4-5% per hour). The reason for this is that the iPad requires 2.1 A of current, but a standard USB port provides 0.5 A. However, if I switch to Mac OS X, the iPad states that it is charging and it does at a rate of about 10% per hour. The only takeaway from this is that either OS X puts out more current on the USB port or that it recognizes the iPad and acts accordingly. Can someone provide more information on what is actually happening?

• Dates not recognized as dates in pivot table pulling directly from SQL Server

  My pivot pulls from an external data source with a date column. Excel doesn't see this column as a date and the 'Format Cells' option panel doesn't change how the dates are displayed. The cell data is left-aligned, suggesting a string rather than a date. I have tried cast(myvar as date) and convert(varchar, myvar, 101) and convert(varchar, myvar, 1) in the base table, but none of these have been picked up by Excel as dates. If the column is recognized as a date, I can group by week and month. I understand that if I can't fix this, the next step is to add columns with weeks and months for each date to the table, but I'd like to give formatting the column one more shot before doing that.

• Odd SVN Checkout failures occur frequenctly on VMWare virtual machines

  We've recently been experiencing seemingly random SVN checkout failures on our Hudson build system. Google search has failed me; I'm hoping the super user community can help me out :-) We are occasionally receiving the following SVN error when our Hudson build jobs checkout source via the Hudson Subversion plug-in (which uses svn kit): ERROR: Failed to check out http://server/svnroot/trunk org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Processing REPORT request response failed: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. (/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default) svn: REPORT request failed on '/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default' This issue seems to only occur when checking out from our Virtual Machines (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Fedora 12) using Hudson's SVN Plug-in. Systems that use the traditional SVN client seem to work. SVN Server version: 1.6.6 Hudson version: 1.377 Hudson SVN Plugin Version: 1.17 Has anyone dealt with this issue, or have any suggestions? • Batch converting video from avc1 to xvid

  I need a way to batch convert 720p video files from avc1 to xvid in Ubuntu 10.04. I'm not terribly concerned about file size, but I do wish to retain the picture quality as much as possible. I believe the audio is encoded as aac, which is fine for my purposes. What would be the best and easiest way to do this? I've tried using Handbrake. During my first attempt, I had it using ffmpeg to convert to MPEG-4, but that just gave me a super-low quality video at twice the file size. Trying h.264 now, so we'll see how that works out. But just in case it doesn't pan out so well, what other ways do you recommend? I was thinking I'd write a bash script to reencode the files one by one, but the problem is that I have very little knowledge about codecs and containers and whatnot - so I wouldn't know what parameters I would pass ffmpeg/mencoder.

• How to make a non-root user to use chown for any user group files?

  I would like to make a user super powerful, with almost all root rights but unable to touch a the root user (to change the password of the root). My goal is to user "B" to manage my web server. The problem is user B need to able to run the chown and chmod commands on some files belonging to other users. I tried to put B in root group or use visudo, but it's not enough. I'm working an Centos 6 system. If some body have ideas!

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

• Wireless Connection unstable with multiple devices connected

  My wireless network works perfectly when only 1 device is connected. Super fast, full strength. But as soon as multiple devices are connected to the wireless network the connections become unstable (constantly losing connection with the internet, not the network itself). It's quite annoying. I have a Sitecom Wireless 300N XR Gigabit Router WL-306, which should be a decent router so I'm guessing there must be something wrong with my configuration.   I am getting the following error when attempting to activate the Sharepoint Server Publishing Infrastructure. There are only about 140 columns defined in the entire site collection. I had previously activated and subsequently deactivated this feature. I don't know whether this might be causing the problem. But I really have no idea. I am a developer and this is my first question on serverFault. Please be gentle. Error Message: Column Limit Exceeded. There are too many columns of the specified data type. • Different versions of 2.5" drives? Unscreawing Intel 320 for slimmer drive to fit newer thinkpads?

  My x60s laptops come with about 1-2mm heigher 2.5" HDD than newer x220 models. This is totally stupid when one would like to reuse the old drive in the newer laptops. I bought newer 2.5" 320 Intel SSDs and they seem to have such 1-2mm gap to unscrew but I am unsure whether it is meant for opening. Could someone instruct what to do here? Look the manufacturer has started changing the old good 2.5" drives into slightly different versions, now it means slow compability issues to fix or totally new 2.5" drives. Ideas how to proceed? Unscrewing newer 320 drives or are some other versions of 2.5" drives meant for x220? Does there exist some sort of racks to get drives working between different comps? Perhaps booting from laplink is currently the easiest solution to get things working when changing harddrives between comps? • Macro - maintain paste link if new row is added to master spreadsheet

  I have a master spreadsheet that has a portion of data (say columns a to e) that paste links to a report. Each row paste links to its own report. If I add a new row to the master spreadsheet I now have the wrong data linking into my reports. I know if I have the reports open when a change is made to the master it will update the reports. However, with the number of reports I will soon have this will no longer be practical. Is there a macro or formula that can be added to maintain the correct data link. I have no real knowledge on such matters and as much information as possible would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
