  I have about 70 pc's with exactly same hardware. I decided to automate turning on and off. I took 1 PC. Here is what I've done: Changed bios configuration so that now pc's waking when I turn on AC switch Installed Windows XP and configured so that I can turn off remotelly, changed workgroup name to "WG1", and pc name to "ExamPC" Then created acronis backup image of this pc I installed this image in several PC's and tried to test All worked well till windows opened. The problem is, all tested PC's started Windows nearly at the same time, and all of them popped up error Duplicate name exist. I can't figure out any solution. Any suggestions?

• Why does my win7 back ground and theme settings reset to default after every reboot ?

  I have the new ASUS G73. Everything is perfect, but for unknown reasons to me after customizing the background and theme colors, rebooting resets all these back to default (the theme that originally came with the laptop) Is there a way to stop this madness? Is there some kind of configuration reset app that runs on start up for ASUS computers? This is my first ASUS so I don't know what to expect with the factory bloatware. No, I don't feel like re-installing bare-bones windows just to get rid of the bloatware. Everything works fine except for this one little thing :( Sniff.

• Running IPv4 program in IPv6 network

  I have an IPv4 windows client program and IPv4 Linux server. What I need is to run them in pure IPv6 network, although machines have dual stack. At the beginning I thought it's not a problem: I'll use 4in6 protocol (rfc2473) and that's all. I found a simple guide for Linux configuration here, but when I started to configuring windows 7, I couldn't find how to do it. There are plenty of info on how to tunnel IPv6 over IPv4 (6in4, Teredo) but not an opposite. Does anyone know how to do it? Thank you.

• ErrorDocument 404 not found in non-existent subdomain

  I am trying to get the apache server to issue a custom 404 error for invalid subdomains. The following is the relevant part of the httpd configuration: Alias /err/ "/var/www/error/" ErrorDocument 404 /err/HTTP_NOT_FOUND.html.var <VirtualHost *:80> # the default virtual host ServerName site_not_found Redirect 404 / </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com ServerAlias ??.example.com </VirtualHost> What I get instead is this: Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. I don't understand why a URL to non-existent-subdomain.example.com produces a 404 error without custom error as shown above while a URL to eg.example.com/non-existent-file produces the full custom 404 error. Can someone advise on this. Thanks.

• Websphere 7: Getting 'Internal Server Error' when accessing JSPs. Servlets ok

  I have just installed WS 7 on our stage server. The test server was done some months ago. I have deployed the same applications to stage as on test. One application is causing me problems. I call the login servlet but the result is an 'Internal Server Error' message. From my logs I can see that the servlet processed the log in successfully and redirects to a JSP. That is the last message. I can find no further info in any of the other standard out/err logs. I have tried creating a simple JSP containing only HTML - same error. If I rename the file to test.html, it displays correctly. The plugin configuration appears to be identical with the one on the test server (where everything works) Ideas anyone?

• Dim (NEARLY blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - why?

  My laptop screen is (almost) black while my secondary screen is fine. I believe it to be backlight / brightness related. Problem description it starts when I start the laptop system loads and works fine, just screen has problems I can see the screen though very faintly / dimly - it's hard to see anything which ain't very white e.g. starting screen has big Thinkpad logo in white, large font - I can see it, though very dimly second screen works very well Official backligtht debugging: using acpi setting as prescribed there for Thinkpads didn't help I can see an entry in /sys/class/backlight/ and it changes when I press hotkeys for brightness (current backlight power for instance goes up or down) acpi-off didn't helpm neither did acpi_backlight=vendor Hardware data Laptop is Thinkpad Edge with glossy screen. 4 processors, 2 cores, exemplary CPU data from cat /proc/cpuinfo reports Genuine Intel i5 (M 480 @ 2.67GHz). If you change the configuration of a network (e.g. reconfigure your router), Windows may determine you are on a new network and assign it a name of Network 2 or YourAPN 2. This less-than-friendly name shows up in many places in the Windows 8 UI, but unlike the good old days of Windows 7, there doesn't appear to be any UI to merge or delete these networks. What's the best way to merge or delete networks you don't want?

• Late Model 2011 Macbook Pro with SSD appears to be off somehow

  Ok, I just got a SSD for my Macbook Pro Late-2011. The specs from what I read are that the laptop is capable of 6gbps, so I got myself a OZC Agility 240gb 6gbps SSD. Decided to join the club and speed test it with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.. and the results are equivilent to that of a 3gbps setup. So.. I am wondering overall is there a configuration setting somewhere I can tweak? The original HD was a 500gb HDD the spinning kind. So I'm figuring maybe thats why there may be a setting somewhere hidden I dunno about that I can tweak, just wanna see if anyone else knows if this is the case. edit should also mention did a fresh factory install, nothing carried over from original hd

  So I ran apt-get install httperf on my system and I can now run httperf. But how can I run 'autobench'? I downloaded the file and unarchived it and if I go in it and run autobench it says -bash command not found I think it's a perl script but if I run perl autobench, it says: root@example:/tmp/autobench-2.1.2# perl autobench Autobench configuration file not found - installing new copy in /root/.autobench.conf cp: cannot stat `/etc/autobench.conf': No such file or directory Installation complete - please rerun autobench Even if I run it again it says the same thing.

• Simple mail server setup for a user-based website.

  I am working on a simple website that has user registration. All I need to do is confirm email addresses by emailing a confirmation email and maybe send out periodic emails regarding various information. I am also considering having a [email protected] email for user questions and comments. The application is written in django and I am running it on ArchLinux on a VPS. I have no knowledge of mail servers. I tried setting up postfix and qmail but had no luck. They are complicated and require a lot of configuration to get them working properly. My use case is super simple and doesn't not require anything fancy. Is there any simple mailing setup that will enable me to quickly get emailing working with my django app with minimal work?

• I can't get grub menu to show up during boot

  After trying (and failing) to install better ATI drivers in 11.10, I've somehow lost my grub menu at boot time. The screen does change to the familiar purple colour, but instead of a list of boot options it's just blank solid colour, and then disappears quickly and boots into the default entry normally. How can I get the bootloader back? I've tried sudo update-grub and also various different combinations of resolutions and colour depths in startupmanager application with no success (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, 16 bits, 8 bits, 10 second delay, 7 second delay, 2 second delay...) edit: I have already tried holding down Shift during bootup and it does not seem to change the behaviour. I get the message "GRUB Loading" in the terminal, but then the place where the grub menu normally appears I get a solid blank magenta screen for a while. • nginx: override global ssl directives for specific servers

  In my configuration I have placed the ssl_* directives inside the http block and have been using a wildcard certificate certified by a custom CA without any problems. However, I now want to use a new certificate for a new subdomain (a server), that has been certified by a recognized CA. Let's say the TLD is blah.org. I want my custom certificate with CN *.blah.org to be used on all domains except for new.blah.org that will use its own certificate/key pair of files with CN new.blah.org. How would one do that? Adding new ssl_* directives inside the server block doesn't seem to override the global settings.

• Over-scan Issues when using HDTV through VGA

  Right now all we can do is set the TV to 1280x768 instead of its native resolution of 1360x768. Setting it to its native resolution gives you a screen with a large portion of the left side of the screen cut off. We've tried everything with the TV so now we're turning to the innards of Ubuntu in hopes of fixing this. The computer is using an NVIDIA GeForce GT240.   I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • Dediced server for all network functions?

  I want to set up a fictional network configuration for a school in my neighborhood. They have about 50 computers altogether, 2X20 in computer rooms for students and another 10 scattered around for various professors. They should all access the internet through a dedicated Linux router machine. What they would like is to have domain names for those three computer groups. Lab1, Lab2 and Professors. The computers in Lab2 and Lab1 should have static ip and should all be named by numbers. So there should be 1@Lab1, 2@Lab1.... etc. And the Professors network should have a DHCP, with authentication. Is it an ok solution to have all these functions on a single server? (The one which will be used as a router) Do I have to set a local DNS for domain naming? Do the host names for Lab computers have to be set on the clients, or can they be automatically assigned?

• Boot from Second SATA Drive

  I have a Dell Precision 490 Workstation, and I just had my other question answered, Install Ubuntu to drive B without impacting drive A, and now I'm having a boot sequence issue. The external drive is great, boots up fine on my laptop, but how do I tell my desktop to boot from my second SATA drive and not the first SATAdrive. My drive configuration as follows SATA-0: Windows SATA-1: DVDR SATA-2: Ubuntu When I choose the boot menu, the option I have is "Internal Hard Drive". I assume it searches all drives, and loads the first bootable one it finds (which happens to be Windows), but I'd like to be able to select the drive from a list. Has anyone experienced this? Is possible without disabling the first hard drive in the BIOS?

• Installing Bugzilla on Ubuntu 9.04 and Plesk

  Hey guys. I'm trying to install the latest Bugzilla version on my ubuntu server. (Want to use a subdomain like bugs.domain.com) I already installed all necessary perl modules and check_modules.pl doesn't show any errors. But when I'm running the testserver.pl script I get the following: TEST-OK Webserver is running under group id in $webservergroup TEST-FAILED Fetch of images/padlock.png failed I'm also not able to visit ANY file within the bugzilla folder from the browser. I'm always getting a 404 error. The bugzilla folder and all containing files are set to apache as the owner. I tried to enter the apache configuration form the installation guide in the http.include file of the domain and in the vhosts.conf file of the subdomain as well. I don't know what to do... Playing with plesks' suexecgroup doesn't bring any solution... I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance!

• How to secure Apache for shared hosting environment? (chrooting, avoid symlinking...)

  I'm having problems dealing with Apache configuration: the problem is that I want to limit each user to his own docroot (so, a chroot() would be what I'm looking for), but: Mod_chroot works only globally and not for each virtualhost: i have the users in a path like the following one /home/vhosts/xxxxx/domains/domain.tld/public_html (xxxxx is the user), and can't solve the problem chrooting /home/vhosts, because the users would still be allowed to see each other. Using apache-mod-itk would slow down the websites too much, and I'm not sure if it would solve anything Without using any of the previous two, I think the only thing left is avoiding symlinking, not allowing the users to link to something that doesn't belong to them. So, I think I'm going to follow the third point but... how to efficiently avoid symlinking while still keeping mod_rewrite working?! The php has already been chrooted with php-fpm, so my only concern is about Apache itself.

  I'm looking for the proper name for a web service that responds with text as opposed to XML. As an example this "cardServer" service will return 5 cards for a poker hand. http://hostname:8080/cardServer/deal/Game=Poker&Qty=5 The result could look like this: Card1=Ad Card2=Kc Card3=Ts Card4=5d Card5=3d The real world example is not as trivial, but the concept is the same. Parameters if any are passed as POST variables. We currently parse the response into a string list and use the values. The process works just fine. What I'm wondering if this service method has a name that has easier tools to deal with the responses and therefore did we reinvent the wheel? For the record the service was provided and maintained by a customer.

Also I need to check if one particular type (the only movable one) is passing in front or trough other items. Now I solved the picking algorithm (checking for ray and bounding sphere intersection) and it works fine, but the collision detection does not. I noticed, while using picking, that BoundingSphere's move even though the objects that they correspond to do not. The movable object is drawn to the world1 Matrix, and the static objects are drawn into the world2 Matrix (world1 and world2 have the same values, I just separated them so that the static elements would not move when the movable one does). The problem is that when I move the item I want, all boundingSpheres move accordingly. How can I move only the boundingSphere that corresponds to that particular item, and leave the rest where they are?

• Xorg crashes ever since using Nvidia dual monitors

  Well ever since I have used dual monitors with the NVIDIA X Server Settings program my xorg process has been crashing after a while, and its generally a pretty long while of like 6 hours afterwards. Before NVIDIA changed my xorg.conf file I only had xorg crash like twice in 2 months, I can't figure out what is going on. • Login takes very long, annoying repaints once a minute when logged in: How to troubleshoot?

  I am suffering from a strange problem with my Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 12.10. The login takes very long ( 30 sec), with a blank screen. In Google Chrome and Thunderbird (and perhaps in other applications), the main window freezes and is repainted in periodic intervals of less than one minute. The freeze takes several seconds, and it seems that font and appearance of, e.g., tabs and buttons briefly changes. Attempting to enable the second monitor show an error message related to XRANDR. Everything seems to have started three days ago, after I had to force-shutdown the machine while it was hibernating due to low power. (It was hibernating for quite a while and didn't want to stop.) Silly me. I have tried the following measures, with no avail: Checked all package file md5 hashes using debsums Reinstalled all packages using a variant of dpkg --get-selection \* | xargs apt-get install -reinstall Temporarily moved configuration directories such as .gconf, .config and .gnome2 to another location Created a new user account When I choose "Ubuntu" during login, the problems disappear. I am sort of frustrated that reinstalling all packages didn't fix the issue. How to troubleshoot this Gnome Shell (?) problem, short of reinstalling the system? (Or did anyone see this kind of behavior on their machine?)

• Multilingual sites and Google search results, do subfolders really work?

  About three months ago we added an English version of our, previously Japanese only, site http://www.clubberia.com under the subfolder http://www.clubberia.com/en/ we've tried to follow the sometimes incomplete best practices laid out by Google by adding alternate tags to all pages that are currently translated. The top page for instance has the following meta tags for language. <link rel="canonical" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> While the English main page under /en/ has <link rel="canonical" href="/en/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> We also have these alternate languages setup in the sitemap. (as per Google's recommendations) http://www.clubberia.com/sitemap.xml It seems however that Google absolutely refuses to show the English top page in results when the user is using English at google.com if you search for "clubberia" you'll, as of this post, get the Japanese description and a title that Google has apparently invented instead of the title and description in the meta-tags for the /en/ index page. Does anyone have any experience with subfolders actually working to affect search results? Am I being too impatient, or possibly doing something incorrect? Should we just give up on subfolders and push to subdomains (not the prettiest option)?
