• Multiple IPs from one router

  I would like to know if it is possible (and if so, how) to configure a router running dd-wrt (or openwrt) to supply connected devices with two ip addresses. The network looks like this: [Internet] | [Router] | | [Comp1] [Comp2] ... My ISP provides me with enough public IP adresses to give all devices on my network one each. The easiest way to set that up is to just use the router as a switch. This will however lead to problems with some LAN based applications. I would still like to use Samba-shares between the computers as well as a vpn server. What I am looking for basically is if it is possible to use the router as a DHCP server for a local network (let's say giving IP adresses 192.168.1.xx to connected computers) while at the same time passing through public IP addresses to each as well?

• Is 50% download speed on a wireless G network normal?

  I have a wired connection of about 36Mb/s, but my wireless speed is max at about 18-19Mb/s. I have a WRT54G-TM (T-Mobile, 802.11G) router with DD-WRT firmware - I've upgraded it to latest build. Done some settings changes: changed channel - 13 wireless network mode - G-only ACK Timing - 0 Fragmentation Threshold and RTS Threshold - 2304 Basic Rate - All Signal/Noise ratio: -46/-94, signal quality ~50-60%. Is this normal with G networks? Edit: The AP is located about 2 meters from laptop, no walls or metal objects, but its next to a TV. I've done a channel scan (had problems locating it, go to "Status - Wireless - Site survey" - lame naming) and everybody else is on channels 1 and 6. Switched to channel 11 but it didn't help. As for trasmit power I got best results with default 71mw. The antenna might be a factor, I'm using the default 2 antennas.

• How to know which revision or router I do have? [migrated]

  I´m trying to update my D-link Dir-600 router with the dd-wrt firmware. I´ve searched for it at the site and found that: Revision A1, B1 and B2 are supported, while C isn´t. Now my router has this information on the back: P/N IIR600GNA .... C1G H/W Ver: C1 F/W Ver: 3.01 So I guess the H/W Ver is the revision, and it´s C... so it´s a lost cause? Or maybe because it´s not just C but C1 I could do something with it? Thanks!

• How to restore a dd overwritten disk partition?

  First of all, I admit I'm stupid and I didn't run proper backup of my data, but you know crap happens... So, I've used dd to overwrite the first 2GB of my 750GB NTFS partition with a FAT32 partition. I've run Photorec and EasyRecovery but all I can restore is the 2GB FAT32 partition and the files on that. Is there a way to "roll back" to the NTFS paritition, and recover - at least - some part of the 750GB data? Thanks.

• Excel VBA: importing CSV with dates as dd/mm/yyyy

  ello I understand this is a fairly common problem, but I'm yet to find a reliable solution. I have data in a csv file with the first column formatted dd/mm/yyyy. When I open it with Workbooks.OpenText it defaults to mm/dd/yyyy until it figures out that what it thinks is the month exceeds 12, then reverts to dd/mm/yyyy. This is my test code, which tries to force it as xlDMYFormat, and I've also tried the text format. I understand this problem only applies to *.csv files, not *.txt, but that isn't an acceptable solution.   We would like to alter the partition without losing data. Here is the sketch of the plan. I am wondering if it is doable using mdadm; and if so, please kindly point some reference on how to carry out the following steps. For RAID 10, there are four disks used. (1 2)(3 4) The idea is to work on 1 and 3 while keeping 2 and 4 as backup. 1: break RAID 10 into two arrays of RAID 0 => (1 3) (2 4) (how to?) 2: re-partition and format (1 3) 3: copy data from (2 4) to (1 3) 4: re-partition and format (2 4) exactly as (1 3) 5: join (2 4) with (1 3) to form RAID 10 (how to?) • How to move ubuntu 12.04 on another drive

  How I can move my ubuntu on another drive? I know about clonezilla but problem is that destination drive is smaller the source one. Gparted can't copy-paste partition if destination not the end last partition. I tried dpkg --selected-packages and apt-clone. First one just not install all my packages and removed existed that now I have no full unity and not my all packages. Second one just fail on configuration package. But before I did that way I copy-paste my /etc to new system.   My question is similar to Move ext4 partition, but the challenge I couldn't figure out is how to shrink a partition from the start. So suppose originally the partition (with raid) is like this. (************** /dev/md127 ***************) After resizing, I want to achieve like this. (*** unallocated ***)(**** /dev/md127 ****) Note, I cannot use gparted, and parted does not support ext4. The commands I have tried so far, % resize2fs -p /dev/md127 1676G # <== This is good. % lvreduce -L 1676G /dev/md127 Path required for Logical Volume "md127" Please provide a volume group name Run `lvreduce --help' for more information. Failed here, I guess it may be because the underlying partition is primary and the lvreduce only works on logical? Anyway, no idea. Then after that, I am thinking to create another partition right after this one, copy the data to that partition, and remove this one, like. 1. (************** /dev/md127 ***************) 2. • Drupal 6 devel module dd() function not writing to drupal_debug.txt file

  I am running a local development Drupal site on a Windows machine. I am trying to use the dd($data, $label = NULL) function from the devel module to help debug. Using this function, should write debug info to a drupal_debug.txt file in the /tmp folder on the machine where the Drupal site is hosted. On my Windows machine, although I am using this function, the drupal_debug.txt file is not getting created anywhere, leading me to believe I am using the function incorrectly. Here is a snippet of how I am using it, <?php $test = "this is my test"; dd($test, $label = NULL); I am looking for an example of the correct syntax for the dd($data, $label = NULL) function. I have the Devel module enabled.

• Joining two routers together, but I have no access to the second router, although I know it's IP address and Gateway

  I have temporarily moved into a rented apartment for 4 months, which has wireless. The trouble I am having is that the access points here are wifi only and no RJ45 and I need to use RJ45 to connect some equipment that I am working with. I have purchased an RT-N66U and installed Tomato (shibby ver. 1.28) and successfully replaced the existing access point, but now I want to enable the access point that I have replaced as it links wirelessly to 3 others. Can I plug in a cable from the access point to my RT-N66U and get it to access the internet via my router? I have no access to the existing wireless access point, and don't want to reset it as it's not mine. There is another router situated in the roof somewhere which I also have no access to, but it's supplying my RT-N66U internet and I most definitely have a double-nat, which although isn't the best way of doing things I am limited with what I can do. Any suggestions on routing tables, vlans etc would be helpful, but I have no experience in these fields before - but I know the tomato firmware can cater for this. My router is set to IP 10.0.1.1 and dhcp is 10.0.1.100-200 The wireless access point address was 192.168.1.2 but this was assigned by the router in the roof which has the address 192.168.1.1. There is a cable from this router going to a wall socket which I now have my RT-N66u attached to via the WAN port. I understand it's scruffy and it isn't the way to do things but I have tried to ask for the admin details but as the wireless network is looked after by a third party and nobody knows their details I am stuck with this dilemma. I could buy three wireless access points and replace the existing but this isn't what I want to do, and although I have installed plenty of DD-WRT wireless repeater bridges they simply don't work here for some unknown reason. The phone line here is very noisy too and I don't have the rights to install ADSL in a building that isn't mine, and 3G coverage isn't good enough either. Thanks for your time

• Network Traffic Log

  Background - On my "home" network I have a Linksys WTR45GL router providing my internet access as well as a wireless AP. Connected I have * 2 Windows PCs (wired) * At least one laptop (Wired) * Some 802.11 enabled handheld consoles (PSPs) * A Nintendo Wii * Some windows XP pcs used by the people in the granny flat. Where I live, South Africa, well, 1Gb worth of monthly cap is, while not expensive, costly enough that I'd like to be sure that all the bandwidth used by devices on my network is ... well ... legitimate and not the result of neighbors parasiting my wireless, malware or just the result of "liberal" download policies in my software. I got the Linksys WRT45GL on the understanding that there were custom firmwares (DD-WRT and Tomato) that allowed bandwidth tracking, but there doesn't seem to be any facility to get a log of traffic that can be examined to see (a) which local devices were the biggest consumers of bandwidth and (b) what they were connected to. What tools are there for logging traffic such that, when it gets to that OMG moment in the month when all my bandwidth is gone, I have a chance to find out what the hell used it all up (and hopefully attempt some corrective action).

• Two hosts on same subnet can't see each other

  I've got two routers with two separate public IP addresses on the same subnet, but I can't get them to talk to each other. Both are connected to the internet (ISP-provided gateway) via Ethernet ports provided by the landlord, but I don't have access to or knowledge of how those are physically connected or the protocols used to get back to the ISP. I can ping either from the outside, but they can't ping each other. Traceroutes in and out look the same, and they receive the same gateway over DHCP. I can ping other IPs on the subnet, so I assume this is not any sort of intentional isolation for security/privacy. Since I'm in a setup where my landlord provides internet and we don't have contact with the ISP, I can't really ask the ISP for help (doubt the landlord would know much either.) The situation is similar to the diagram at this question, but instead of the two servers, there's another router coming off the (presumed) switch, and I don't have access to the switch. I've tried giving them static routes to each other with the ISP internet gateway as the gateway, but that's not working. One is a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT, the other is a Netgear WGR614v7, although I could get something more capable if necessary. I'd like to keep them each connected directly to the ISP on their WAN ports, but I can have an ethernet cable between them if necessary - I'm wondering if there's a way without that, and if there isn't, I'd appreciate advice on how to get that working. Sorry this is so nitpicky; there are reasons for all the constraints, but they don't apply to the real question, so I left them out. ;) Thank you!

• A router that supports connecting with 2 different wifi networks

  I Have the following setup in one place: We have a small local ISP through wireless. I have a external parabolic antenna, connected to a external usb wifi radio, connected through USB to a desktop old PC. The pc connects do the ISP wiki network, then do a Dial Up (PPPoE) connection through the this wifi setup. This will expand with others mobiles devices to be used. When I need, I take my home wireless router and connect though Ethernet in the PC, which is shares the internet. The problem is that the PC must be always ON and working. I would like to buy a wireless router which could be an AP to the mobile devices, notebooks, etc, as also could connect to the ISP Wifi/PPPoE network. So, this device must: Have one radio with detachable antenna to connect to the external antenna. It must connect as client to a network and then dial up the PPP Have another radio serving as AP (infrastructure) to the local place This can't be very expensive. I found a candidate: ( http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?categoryid=1682&model=TL-WR2543ND ) It have 3 deatachable antennas, working with dual band. Officially, his firmware doesn't support it. My supposition: If internally there is 3 or 2 distinct wlan ports (like wlan0, wlan1), and there is support, i could use a OpenWRT, DD-WRT or Tomato to make this works. It also have 1 USB port, which I cold use to connect my actual USB Wifi card on it instead to the old PC. Another alternative, is a router that can do this out of box, with the original firmware. But I don't think this is a easy thing to find.

• Router as primary DNS server, Server as alternate? (or vice versa)

  We have a very small business network, with a typical cable modem hooked into a DD-WRT router. We also run a basic CentOS server that does a variety of things, including acting as the primary DNS server for the office. The reason we need an internal DNS server is because we do a lot of internal web development and use the DNS server to add/remove various local network URLs for internal website testing (like www.testsite.com.local). It's very important for us to be able to add/remove URL aliases easily to the DNS. The problem with this setup is that if we ever need to restart the CentOS server or take it offline for upgrades or whatever, then internet access for all computers on the network is lost. That's because each computer relies on that DNS server to access the Internet I guess? The router is online all the time and very very rarely has to be restarted. It would be nice if we could setup my router to be the primary DNS server but still be running DNS on my server. So we could still add my local testing website URLs to the DNS server in CentOS, but be able to also take down the CentOS server without loosing Internet access on the network. How would this be setup? Would I simply need to add both router + server IP addresses to each computer's IP settings? Is the router primary DNS and server secondary DNS server? Or vice versa? Or can one of the two serve as a fallback for the other? What (if anything) needs to be configured on both the router and server in order for them to recognize that the other DNS server exists on the network? Does anyone have any newb-friendly resources for setting up something like this?

  I was thinking about something. I want to install a 7gb partition and store 2 compress disk image and install linux to it. I want it to be light. What i would like to do is hide the grub loader (or anything) and if i want to reformat my PC press a certain key on startup. Which will then load the linux OS and then i can use dd to restore the partition i want I plan to use windows XP and windows 7 as my main OS and virtualize anything else i need (vista, dummy XP for testing, multiple linux distos, etc). Bonus points if you can tell me how to hide the partition in windows so XP and 7 cant touch it

For example, I have a list of strings(text in VIM): 04/01/10 04/03/10 04/13/10 I copy those strings and then paste into my iWork-Numbers worksheet. The result will be: 2004-01-10 2004-03-10 04/13/10 It looks like that Numbers (mac workseet application in iWork) tries to convert the first two digits into year, then the next two into month if less than 12 and last two digits to a day, for the first two rows. For the third(04/13/10), since the middle two digits are 13 and cannot be a month, then this row is pasted as it is (actually it is what I need). Is there any way to paste whatever as they are, without any "smart date conversion"? Do I have to change settings in Numberers or Mac OS's System preference?
