  • Efficiency of Java "Double Brace Initialization"?

    - by Jim Ferrans
In Hidden Features of Java the top answer mentions Double Brace Initialization, with a very enticing syntax: Set<String> flavors = new HashSet<String>() {{ add("vanilla"); add("strawberry"); add("chocolate"); add("butter pecan"); }}; This idiom creates an anonymous inner class with just an instance initializer in it, which "can use any [...] methods in the containing scope". Main question: Is this as inefficient as it sounds? Should its use be limited to one-off initializations? (And of course showing off!) Second question: The new HashSet must be the "this" used in the instance initializer ... can anyone shed light on the mechanism? Third question: Is this idiom too obscure to use in production code? Summary: Very, very nice answers, thanks everyone. On question (3), people felt the syntax should be clear (though I'd recommend an occasional comment, especially if your code will pass on to developers who may not be familiar with it). On question (1), The generated code should run quickly. The extra .class files do cause jar file clutter, and slow program startup slightly (thanks to coobird for measuring that). Thilo pointed out that garbage collection can be affected, and the memory cost for the extra loaded classes may be a factor in some cases. Question (2) turned out to be most interesting to me. If I understand the answers, what's happening in DBI is that the anonymous inner class extends the class of the object being constructed by the new operator, and hence has a "this" value referencing the instance being constructed. Very neat. Overall, DBI strikes me as something of an intellectual curiousity. Coobird and others point out you can achieve the same effect with Arrays.asList, varargs methods, Google Collections, and the proposed Java 7 Collection literals. Newer JVM languages like Scala, JRuby, and Groovy also offer concise notations for list construction, and interoperate well with Java. Given that DBI clutters up the classpath, slows down class loading a bit, and makes the code a tad more obscure, I'd probably shy away from it. However, I plan to spring this on a friend who's just gotten his SCJP and loves good natured jousts about Java semantics! ;-) Thanks everyone!

  • How to import RoR project to Netbeans

    - by user369759
I have very simple (in fact empty ) project which i have created by rails new MyProject command from command-line. So, i want to import it to NetBeans IDE. I click "new project" - "RoR" - "from existing source", select Ruby 1.9.2 (instead of embedded JRuby) in the wizard form. After that i have got errors [see the picture below]: So.. i click OK. And then try to run the RoR application from NetBeans clicking on the run-button and i got the following error in the log-panel: /home/ses/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p136/bin/ruby: No such file or directory -- script/server (LoadError) So how to handle these two problems? and, replying the comment to my question. yes, i performed following commands: bundle install Using rake (0.8.7) Using abstract (1.0.0) Using activesupport (3.0.3) Using builder (2.1.2) Using i18n (0.5.0) Using activemodel (3.0.3) Using erubis (2.6.6) Using rack (1.2.1) Using rack-mount (0.6.13) Using rack-test (0.5.7) Using tzinfo (0.3.24) Using actionpack (3.0.3) Using mime-types (1.16) Using polyglot (0.3.1) Using treetop (1.4.9) Using mail (2.2.15) Using actionmailer (3.0.3) Using arel (2.0.7) Using activerecord (3.0.3) Using activeresource (3.0.3) Using bundler (1.0.10) Using mysql2 (0.2.6) Using thor (0.14.6) Using railties (3.0.3) Using rails (3.0.3) p.s. my application is working when i launch it from the console. i use ruby-1.9.2 and RoR 3.0 and Netbeans 6.9.1 and Ubuntu 10.10 bundle pack Using rake (0.8.7) Using abstract (1.0.0) Using activesupport (3.0.3) Using builder (2.1.2) Using i18n (0.5.0) Using activemodel (3.0.3) Using erubis (2.6.6) Using rack (1.2.1) Using rack-mount (0.6.13) Using rack-test (0.5.7) Using tzinfo (0.3.24) Using actionpack (3.0.3) Using mime-types (1.16) Using polyglot (0.3.1) Using treetop (1.4.9) Using mail (2.2.15) Using actionmailer (3.0.3) Using arel (2.0.7) Using activerecord (3.0.3) Using activeresource (3.0.3) Using bundler (1.0.10) Using mysql2 (0.2.6) Using thor (0.14.6) Using railties (3.0.3) Using rails (3.0.3) Updating .gem files in vendor/cache Your bundle is complete! • Is there anyway to exclude artifacts inherited from a parent POM?

    - by Miguel
Artifacts from dependencies can be excluded by declaring an <exclusions> element inside a <dependency> But in this case it's needed to exclude an artifact inherited from a parent project. An excerpt of the POM under discussion follows: <project> <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion> <groupId>test</groupId> <artifactId>jruby</artifactId> <version>0.0.1-SNAPSHOT</version> <parent> <artifactId>base</artifactId> <groupId>es.uniovi.innova</groupId> <version>1.0.0</version> </parent> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>com.liferay.portal</groupId> <artifactId>ALL-DEPS</artifactId> <version>1.0</version> <scope>provided</scope> <type>pom</type> </dependency> </dependencies> </project> base artifact, depends on javax.mail:mail-1.4.jar, and ALL-DEPS depends on another version of the same library. Due to the fact that mail.jar from ALL-DEPS exist on the execution environment, although not exported, collides with the mail.jar that exists on the parent, which is scoped as compile. A solution could be to rid off mail.jar from the parent POM, but most of the projects that inherit base, need it (as is a transtive dependency for log4j). So What I would like to do is to simply exclude parent's library from the child project, as it could be done if base was a dependency and not the parent pom: ... <dependency> <artifactId>base</artifactId> <groupId>es.uniovi.innova</groupId> <version>1.0.0</version> <type>pom<type> <exclusions> <exclusion> <groupId>javax.mail</groupId> <artifactId>mail</artifactId> </exclusion> </exclusions> </dependency> ...

  • Bundler doesn't want to install hpricot on Windows XP with Ruby 1.8.7

    - by Nick Gorbikoff
Hello I develop on a Windows machine but deploy to Debian. Trying to use hpricot with Rails 3 app. I can get the gem to install using : gem install hpricot --platform=mswin32 But when I do this in the bundle file - it keeps throwing an error (I think it's trying to install the wrong version of hpricot (not windows specific) group :production do gem "hpricot", "0.8.3" end group :development, :test do gem "hpricot", "0.8.3", :platforms => [:mswin, :mingw] end This is from another question here on stackoverflow - but it's not working for me. • Does anyone know how to appropriately deal with user timezones in rails 2.3?

    - by Amazing Jay
We're building a rails app that needs to display dates (and more importantly, calculate them) in multiple timezones. Can anyone point me towards how to work with user timezones in rails 2.3(.5 or .8) The most inclusive article I've seen detailing how user time zones are supposed to work is here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/howtos/time-zones... although it is unclear when this was written or for what version of rails. Specifically it states that: "Time.zone - The time zone that is actually used for display purposes. This may be set manually to override config.time_zone on a per-request basis." Keys terms being "display purposes" and "per-request basis". Locally on my machine, this is true. However on production, neither are true. Setting Time.zone persists past the end of the request (to all subsequent requests) and also affects the way AR saves to the DB (basically treating any date as if it were already in UTC even when its not), thus saving completely inappropriate values. We run Ruby Enterprise Edition on production with passenger. If this is my problem, do we need to switch to JRuby or something else? To illustrate the problem I put the following actions in my ApplicationController right now: def test p_time = Time.now.utc s_time = Time.utc(p_time.year, p_time.month, p_time.day, p_time.hour) logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect logger.error p_time.inspect logger.error s_time.inspect jl = JunkLead.create! jl.date_at = s_time logger.error s_time.inspect logger.error jl.date_at.inspect jl.save! logger.error s_time.inspect logger.error jl.date_at.inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end def test2 Time.zone = 'Mountain Time (US & Canada)' logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end def test3 Time.zone = 'UTC' logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end and they yield the following: Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:50) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Fri Dec 24 22:15:50 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Completed in 21ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] Processing ApplicationController#test2 (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:53) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c580a8 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: America/Denver>, @name="Mountain Time (US & Canada)", @utc_offset=-25200> nil Completed in 143ms (View: 1, DB: 3) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test2] Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:59) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c580a8 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: America/Denver>, @name="Mountain Time (US & Canada)", @utc_offset=-25200> nil Fri Dec 24 22:15:59 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 15:00:00 MST -07:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 15:00:00 MST -07:00 Completed in 20ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] Processing ApplicationController#test3 (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:16:03) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Completed in 17ms (View: 0, DB: 2) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test3] Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:16:04) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Fri Dec 24 22:16:05 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Completed in 151ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] It should be clear above that the 2nd call to /test shows Time.zone set to Mountain, even though it shouldn't. Additionally, checking the database reveals that the test action when run after test2 saved a JunkLead record with a date of 2010-12-22 15:00:00, which is clearly wrong.

  • Where is the sample applications in the lastest Spring release(Spring Framework 3.0.2)?

    - by Yousui
Hi guys, On the Spring download page, It says that For all Spring Framework releases, the basic release contains only the binaries while the -with-dependencies release contains everything the basic release contains plus all third-party dependencies, buildable source trees, and sample applications. I know one of the sample applications is called jpetstore in spring 2.0. I did search in these folders and can't find anything useful. By the way, I also download the basic release which is spring-framework-3.0.2.RELEASE.zip. In the readme.txt of the basic release I found the following text: GETTING STARTED Please consult the blog examples at http://blog.springsource.com as well as the sections of interest in the reference documentation. Sample applications and related material will be provided as separate downloads. But I still don't know where to download the sample applications. Anyone can help? Thanks in advance.
