  • Moving from windows to linux

    - by rincewind
I need to reconcile these 2 facts: I don't feel comfortable working on Linux; I need to develop software for Linux. Some background: I have a 10+ years of programming experience on Windows (almost exclusively C/C++, but some .NET as well), I was a user of FreeBSD at home for about 3 years or so (then had to go back to Windows), and I've never had much luck with Linux. And now I have to develop software for Linux. I need a plan. On Windows, you can get away with just knowing a programming language, an API you're coding against, your IDE (VisualStudio) and some very basic tools for troubleshooting (Depends, ProcessExplorer, DebugView, WinDbg). Everything else comes naturally. On Linux, it's a very different story. How the hell would I know what DLL (sorry, Shared Object) would load, if I link to it from Firefox plugin? What's the Linux equivalent of inserting __asm int 3/DebugBreak() in the source and running the program, and then letting the OS call a debugger? Why the hell release builds use something, called appLoader, while debug builds work somehow different? Worst of all: how to provision Linux development environment? So, taking into account that hatred is usually associated with not knowing enough, what would you recommend? I'm ok with Emacs and GCC. I need to educate myself as a Linux admin/user, and I need to learn proper troubleshooting tools (strace is cool, btw), equivalents to the ones I mentioned above. Do I need to do Linux From Scratch? Or do I need to just read some books (I've read "UNIX programming enviornment" by Kernighan and "Advanced Programming..." by Stevens, but I need to learn something more practical)? Or do I need to have some Linux distro on my home computer?

  • Recovering from apt-get upgrade gone wrong due to a full disk

    - by Peter
I was performing an apt-get upgrade on an Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS box that hadn't been updated in a little while and the upgrade failed due to 'No space left on device'. After a little while I worked out space meant inodes and I have freed some up but unfortunately things have been left something askew. I have tried manually installing the old versions of packages mentioned using dpkg -i but that doesn't help. I have tried apt-get upgrade and apt-get -f install to no avail. Results are below. Any ideas how to fix things up? FIXED: Installing the earlier versions again manually via dpkg -i and then apt-get -f install has done the trick. Not sure why this didn't work the first time. The packages in question are listed below but they will presumably vary. libssl1.0.0_1.0.1-4ubuntu5.14_i386.deb linux-headers-3.2.0-64-generic-pae_3.2.0-64.97_i386.deb linux-image-generic-pae_3.2.0.64.76_i386.deb linux-headers-3.2.0-64_3.2.0-64.97_all.deb linux-headers-generic-pae_3.2.0.64.76_i386.deb root@unlinked:/tmp# apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... • Change Linux console screen blanking behavior

    - by quack quixote
How do I change the screen blanking behavior on Linux virtual terminals? For example, if I switch to a VT from X, login, and leave the system alone for 5 minutes or so, the screen will blank like a screensaver. It comes back with any keypress, like a screensaver. Mostly I just want to change the timeout, but I'm also interested in other settings. If it helps, one of my systems is running Ubuntu 10.04 with the stock graphics drivers. fbset shows the console using the radeondrmfb framebuffer device.

  • Little girl friendly versions of Linux (or themes for Linux)

    - by Hamish Downer
I'm going to install Linux on a PC for a daughter (age 7) of a friend of mine. I recently came across Hannah Montana Linux. The parents don't want a commercially branded thing going on, so no Hannah Montana. But I was wondering if there were other linux distros - or desktop themes - that would be cool for a 7 year old girl. All suggestions welcome.

  • Linux Newbie: SSH or VNC for linux admin tasks

    - by Dirk
Longtime Windows user, looking to get my feet wet with Linux. Since Windows makes comparatively little use of the command line, I'm naturally more comfortable with GUI tools for remote server administration tasks. However, before i rush out and install a VNC server on my Linux box, I want to get a sense of how many of Linux's various packages actually offer GUI front end. If not many, then it's probably not worth the effort.

  • Best Linux dist for .NET developer looking to learn Groovy (and never used Linux)

    - by blade7
Hi, I am planning to learn Groovy, but I want to do so on a Linux OS (because such an open minded approach will teach me more about IT and I have Windows Server VMs). Anyway, which Linux distro is the easiest to use and requires the least amount of knowledge on commands etc? As I am new to Linux, I want a dist. which doesn't require command-level knowledge (I am not at this level with Linux but I am with Windows Server). Which dist would be most suitable for me and has development utilities built in? Thanks

  • Easiest linux distro creation

    - by QAH
Hello everyone! I have been trying to create my own customized distro of linux (preferably some kind of Debian system like Debian, Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc). I want to make it specifically for playing games. This is just a pet project for me and while I know linux pretty well (bash, gcc, g++, gdb, etc), I'm not that great with knowing the kernel. So that puts making my own distro from scratch out of the question. I went on to trying to create remasters of Knoppix and it worked for me but it was a very long process since knoppix is meant to be a live CD and I was running it in VirtualBox. So what is the easiest and fastest method of making your own distro? Also, can I install ubuntu or some kind of linux to a computer make changes to it, and then make a distro off of that installation? Please help me with this, Thanks

  • Linux memory fragmentation

    - by Raghu
Hi all, Is there a way to detect memory fragmentation on linux ? This is because on some long running servers I have noticed performance degradation and only after I restart process I see better performance. I noticed it more when using linux huge page support -- are huge pages in linux more prone to fragmentation ? I have looked at /proc/buddyinfo in particular. I want to know whether there are any better ways(not just CLI commands per se, any program or theoretical background would do) to look at it.

  • mini linux to use dd and access HD and/or USB

    - by acidzombie24
I was thinking about something. I want to install a 7gb partition and store 2 compress disk image and install linux to it. I want it to be light. What i would like to do is hide the grub loader (or anything) and if i want to reformat my PC press a certain key on startup. Which will then load the linux OS and then i can use dd to restore the partition i want I plan to use windows XP and windows 7 as my main OS and virtualize anything else i need (vista, dummy XP for testing, multiple linux distos, etc). Bonus points if you can tell me how to hide the partition in windows so XP and 7 cant touch it

  • __modver_version_show undefined error when building linux kernel 3.0.4 version

    - by Jie Liu
I tried to build the linux kernel 3.0.4 on ubuntu 11.10 in virtualbox. Here are my steps: Download the source code tar xjvf linux-source-3.0.0.tar.bz2 cd linux-source-3.0.0 make menuconfig, changed nothing but used the default config and save to .config make Actually I think it should be 3.0.4 because from the Makefile I could see VERSION = 3 PATCHLEVEL = 0 SUBLEVEL = 4 EXTRAVERSION = Then at stage 2 which is to make modules, an error happened: ERROR: "__modver_version_show" [drivers/staging/rts5139/rts5139.ko] undefined! make[1]: *** [__modpost] Error 1 make: *** [modules] Error 2 Perhaps because 3.0.4 is a new release so that I can not find any same problem asked nor any solution to it.

  • Linux and ClickPads

    - by John
I just got my Arch / Windows 7 dual-boot setup running... except for one thing. I have an HP dv6-3127dx laptop, which is an issue when it comes to Linux because it does not have a traditional touchpad, but a "ClickPad." This means where the left and right buttons exist, it is also sensitive to moving the pointer. The issue comes in when I try to steady the mouse with one finger, while clicking the left click with another, because the mouse freaks out. It's also an issue because it's not recognizing the right click whatsoever. I am currently using the default Synaptics drivers downloaded from pacman on Arch Linux, running Linux v2.6.36. EDIT: The question of course is, how can I fix this?

  • What is the sequence followed by the Linux kernel to configure a device?

    - by Jaime Soriano
As I understood after reading the chapter related to The Linux Device Model in the Linux Device Drivers 3rd Edition, when a new device is configured, the kernel follows more or less this sequence: The Device is registered in the driver core (device_register(), what includes device initialization) A kobject is registered in the device model It provokes a hotplug event Bus and drivers are checked to see which one matches with the device Probe Device is binded to the driver My main doubt is, in step 1, when is device_register() called and what info should be yet in the device struct? Is it called by the bus to which the device is connected? Any example in the code? Have I misunderstood something? :)

  • Gain Total Control of Systems running Oracle Linux

    - by Anand Akela
Oracle Linux is the best Linux for enterprise computing needs and Oracle Enterprise Manager enables enterprises to gain total control over systems running Oracle Linux. Linux Management functionality is available as part of Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c and is available to Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Support customers at no cost. The solution provides an integrated and cost-effective solution for complete Linux systems lifecycle management and delivers comprehensive provisioning, patching, monitoring, and administration capabilities via a single, web-based user interface thus significantly reducing the complexity and cost associated with managing Linux operating system environments. Many enterprises are transforming their IT infrastructure from multiple independent datacenters to an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) model, in which shared pools of compute and storage are made available to end-users on a self-service basis. While providing significant improvements when implemented properly, this strategy introduces change and complexity at a time when datacenters are already understaffed and overburdened. To aid in this transformation, IT managers need the proper tools to help them provide the array of IT capabilities required throughout the organization without stretching their staff and budget to the limit. Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c offers  the advanced capabilities to enable IT departments and end-users to take advantage of many benefits and cost savings of IaaS. Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c addresses this challenge with a converged approach that integrates systems management across the infrastructure stack, helping organizations to streamline operations, increase productivity, and reduce system downtime.  You can see the Linux management functionality in action by watching the latest integrated Linux management demo . • Terminal Colors Not Working

    - by Matt Fordham
I am accessing an Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS server via SSH from OSX. Recently the colors stopped working. I think it happened while I was installing/troubleshooting RVM, but I am not positive.
