  • jquery cycle plugin using RSS feed images?

    - by Chris
    This could well be a terribly ignorant question, if so please forgive me: I'm using jquery cycle plugin to create an image rotator of recently posted images. Im using drupal 6.x and created an RSS feed of the recent images using the views module. I have no idea how to connect the two. Any suggestions? I have a feeling an RSS feed might not be the best way to go about this, but it's all I could come up with. Thanks for the help.

  • Windows Phone 7 development: reading RSS feeds

    - by DigiMortal
    One limitation on Windows Phone 7 is related to System.Net namespace classes. There is no convenient way to read data from web. There is no WebClient class. There is no GetResponse() method – we have to do it all asynchronously because compact framework has limited set of classes we can use in our applications to communicate with internet. In this posting I will show you how to read RSS-feeds on Windows Phone 7. NB! This is my draft code and it may contain some design flaws and some questionable solutions. This code is intended to use as test-drive for Windows Phone 7 CTP developer tools and I don’t suppose you are going to use this code in production environment. Current state of my RSS-reader Currently my RSS-reader for Windows Phone 7 is very simple, primitive and uses almost all defaults that come out-of-box with Windows Phone 7 CTP developer tools. My first goal before going on with nicer user interface design was making RSS-reading work because instead of convenient classes from .NET Framework we have to use very limited classes from .NET Framework CE. This is why I took the reading of RSS-feeds as my first task. There are currently more things to solve regarding user-interface. As I am pretty new to all this Silverlight stuff I am not very sure if I can modify default controls easily or should I write my own controls that have better look and that work faster. The image on right shows you how my RSS-reader looks like right now. Upper side of screen is filled with list that shows headlines from this blog. The bottom part of screen is used to show description of selected posting. You can click on the image to see it in original size. In my next posting I will show you some improvements of my RSS-reader user interface that make it look nicer. But currently it is nice enough to make sure that RSS-feeds are read correctly. FeedItem class As this is most straight-forward part of the following code I will show you RSS-feed items class first. I think we have to stop on it because it is simple one. public class FeedItem {     public string Title { get; set; }     public string Description { get; set; }     public DateTime PublishDate { get; set; }     public List<string> Categories { get; set; }     public string Link { get; set; }       public FeedItem()     {         Categories = new List<string>();     } } RssClient RssClient takes feed URL and when asked it loads all items from feed and gives them back to caller through ItemsReceived event. Why it works this way? Because we can make responses only using asynchronous methods. I will show you in next section how to use this class. Although the code here is not very good but it works like expected. I will refactor this code later because it needs some more efforts and investigating. But let’s hope I find excellent solution. :) public class RssClient {     private readonly string _rssUrl;       public delegate void ItemsReceivedDelegate(RssClient client, IList<FeedItem> items);     public event ItemsReceivedDelegate ItemsReceived;       public RssClient(string rssUrl)     {         _rssUrl = rssUrl;     }       public void LoadItems()     {         var request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(_rssUrl);         var result = (IAsyncResult)request.BeginGetResponse(ResponseCallback, request);     }       void ResponseCallback(IAsyncResult result)     {         var request = (HttpWebRequest)result.AsyncState;         var response = request.EndGetResponse(result);           var stream = response.GetResponseStream();         var reader = XmlReader.Create(stream);         var items = new List<FeedItem>(50);           FeedItem item = null;         var pointerMoved = false;           while (!reader.EOF)         {             if (pointerMoved)             {                 pointerMoved = false;             }             else             {                 if (!reader.Read())                     break;             }               var nodeName = reader.Name;             var nodeType = reader.NodeType;               if (nodeName == "item")             {                 if (nodeType == XmlNodeType.Element)                     item = new FeedItem();                 else if (nodeType == XmlNodeType.EndElement)                     if (item != null)                     {                         items.Add(item);                         item = null;                     }                   continue;             }               if (nodeType != XmlNodeType.Element)                 continue;               if (item == null)                 continue;               reader.MoveToContent();             var nodeValue = reader.ReadElementContentAsString();             // we just moved internal pointer             pointerMoved = true;               if (nodeName == "title")                 item.Title = nodeValue;             else if (nodeName == "description")                 item.Description =  Regex.Replace(nodeValue,@"<(.|\n)*?>",string.Empty);             else if (nodeName == "feedburner:origLink")                 item.Link = nodeValue;             else if (nodeName == "pubDate")             {                 if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(nodeValue))                     item.PublishDate = DateTime.Parse(nodeValue);             }             else if (nodeName == "category")                 item.Categories.Add(nodeValue);         }           if (ItemsReceived != null)             ItemsReceived(this, items);     } } This method is pretty long but it works. Now let’s try to use it in Windows Phone 7 application. Using RssClient And this is the fragment of code behing the main page of my application start screen. You can see how RssClient is initialized and how items are bound to list that shows them. public MainPage() {     InitializeComponent();       SupportedOrientations = SupportedPageOrientation.Portrait | SupportedPageOrientation.Landscape;     listBox1.Width = Width;       var rssClient = new RssClient("http://feedproxy.google.com/gunnarpeipman");     rssClient.ItemsReceived += new RssClient.ItemsReceivedDelegate(rssClient_ItemsReceived);     rssClient.LoadItems(); }   void rssClient_ItemsReceived(RssClient client, IList<FeedItem> items) {     Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(delegate()     {         listBox1.ItemsSource = items;     });            } Conclusion As you can see it was not very hard task to read RSS-feed and populate list with feed entries. Although we are not able to use more powerful classes that are part of full version on .NET Framework we can still live with limited set of classes that .NET Framework CE provides.

  • PHP & RSS Feeds & Special Characters validation Problem.

    - by BUGY
    I keep getting the following validation warning below. And I was wondering that some of my articles deal with special characters and was wondering how should I go about rendering or not rendering special characters in my RSS feeds? Should I use htmlentites or not? If so how? In addition, interoperability with the widest range of feed readers could be improved by implementing the following recommendations. line 22, column 35: title should not contain HTML: &amp; PHP code. <title>' . htmlentities(strip_tags($title), ENT_QUOTES, "UTF-8") . '</title>

  • iTunes RSS Feed returning max. 100 items instead of 300

    - by TheEye
    I tried the iTunes RSS generator at http://itunes.apple.com/rss/generator/ to download the newest 300 games, which gave me the RSS Feed URL http://itunes.apple.com/us/rss/newapplications/limit=300/genre=6014/xml. However, only 100 are returned, and alphabetically sorted, so the list stops at the letter E ... Did Apple restrict the amount of items one could get without updating their RSS Feed Generator? Or am I missing something?

  • How can I create my own private RSS feed of selected podcasts?

    - by Bill Rodman
    I would like to be able to browse the Internet and "drag" available MP3 files of various podcast episodes into my own private RSS feed. I would like to then subscribe to this RSS feed with iTunes. Do you know of any applications or services that would do this? (I subscribe to IT Conversations and they have a private RSS feed that you can create of their episodes. I like this feature very much. If only I had such a feature that would work more generally). One of the reasons I am looking for this, that my iPod Touch has problems handling podcast playlists that span multiple RSS feeds.

  • Problem sorting RSS feed by date using XSL

    - by Buckers
    I'm creating a website where I need to show the top 5 records from an RSS feed, and these need to be sorted by date and time. The date fields in the RSS feed are in the following format: "Mon, 16 Feb 2009 16:02:44 GMT" I'm having big problems getting the records to sort correctly - I've tried lots of different code examples I've seen, but none seem to sort the records correctly. The code for my XSL sheet is shown below, and the feed in question is here. Very grateful for anyones help!!! Thanks, Chris. XSL CODE: <xsl:stylesheet version="1.1" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:digg="http://digg.com//docs/diggrss/" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"> <xsl:template match="/"> <xsl:for-each select="//*[local-name()='item'][position() < 6]"> <p> <a> <xsl:attribute name="href"> <xsl:value-of select="*[local-name()='link']"/></xsl:attribute> <xsl:attribute name="target"> <xsl:text>top</xsl:text> </xsl:attribute> <xsl:value-of select="*[local-name()='title']"/> </a> <br/> <span class="smaller"><xsl:value-of select="*[local-name()='pubDate']" disable-output-escaping="yes"/></span> </p> </xsl:for-each>

  • Problems reading RSS feed with jQuery.get()

    - by bbeckford
    Hi there, I've been pulling my hair out trying to use jQuery.get() to pull in my dynamically generated RSS feed and I'm having nothing but issues, is my RSS feed the wrong format? If so can I convert it to the correct format using javascript? Here's my feed: http://dev.chriscurddesign.co.uk/burns/p/rc_rss.php?rcf_id=0 Here's my code: function get_rss_feed() { $(".content").empty(); $.get("http://dev.chriscurddesign.co.uk/burns/p/rc_rss.php?rcf_id=0", function(d) { var i = 0; $(d).find('item').each(function() { var $item = $(this); var title = $item.find('title').text(); var link = $item.find('link').text(); var location = $item.find('location').text(); var pubDate = $item.find('pubDate').text(); var html = '<div class="entry"><a href="' + link + '" target="_blank">' + title + '</a></div>'; $('.content').append(html); i++; }); }); }; Any input would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

  • make website page get news articles from feeds

    - by Andy
    Hi, I would like to start publishing some news articles from time to time. An option would be to create a new web page for every article but this sounds like it can be done easier. For instance I noticed clear channel uses some kind of feed, like: http://www.z100.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=104650&article=7011404 I don't know what it means and how it works but looks like a nice way to get the article from some kind of database I guess? Does someone knows how this works, or some other way to create new articles etc, some dynamical functionality for instance to generate links to the articles and get the right article from a database for example. thanks!

  • Problems extracting information from RSS feed description field

    - by Graeme
    Hi, I've built an iPhone application using the parsing code from the TopSongs sample iPhone application. I've hit a problem though - the feed I'm trying to parse data from doesn't have a separate field for every piece of information (i.e. if it was for a feed about dogs, all the information such as dog type, dog age and dog price is contained in the feed. However, the TopSongs app relies on information having its own tags, so instead of using it uses and . So my question is this. How do I extract this information from the description field so that it can be parsed using the TopSongs parser? Can you somehow extract the dog age, price and type information using Yahoo Pipes and use that RSS feed for the feed? Or is there code that I can add to do it in application? Update: To view the code of my application parser (based on the TopSongs Core Data Apple provided application, see below. Here's a sample of one item from the the actual RSS feed I'm using (the description is longer, and has status,size, and a couple of other fields, but they're all formatted the same.: <item> <title>MOE, MARGRET STREET</title> <description> <b>District/Region:</b>&nbsp;REGION 09</br><b>Location:</b>&nbsp;MOE</br><b>Name:</b>&nbsp;MARGRET STREET</br></description> <pubDate>Thu,11 Mar 2010 05:43:03 GMT</pubDate> <guid>1266148</guid> </item> /* File: iTunesRSSImporter.m Abstract: Downloads, parses, and imports the iTunes top songs RSS feed into Core Data. • In php, Prepare string and create XML/RSS Feed

    - by Bill
    I want to create my own RSS/XML feed. I fetch data from the database to display, but keep getting invalid character errors. If the string has an ampersand or other strange characters in it, the XML will be invalid. I tried using urlencode and htmlentities, but these don't capture all possible characters which need to be escaped. Does anyone know of a PHP function which will prepare a string for XML output?

  • PHP statements, HTML and RSS

    Alrighty, I've got another little bit of code that I'm wrestling through. I'm building a conditional sidebar. The goal is to only show blog related stuff when posts in the "blog" category are being viewed. I've got part of it working, but the part where I'm trying to bring in an RSS feed of the category into the sidebar to show as recent posts. It doesn't work, and since I'm a php newb I'm not entirely sure why. Any suggestions or pointers are much appreciated. I'll post the problem section first, and then the entire php file second, so you all can see the context for the section that I'm having issues with. Problem Section: echo '<div class="panel iq-news">'; echo '<h4><span><a href="/category/blog/feed"><img src="/wp-content/themes/iq/images/rss-icon.gif" alt="Subscribe to our feed"/></a></span>IQNavigator Blog</h4>'; <?php query_posts('category_name=Blog&showposts=2'); if (have_posts()) : ?> echo '<ul>'; <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> echo '<li><a href="<?php the_permalink();?>"><?php the_title();?> </a></li>'; <?php endwhile;?> echo '</ul>'; <?php endif;?> echo '<div class="twitter">'; echo '<p id="twitter-updates">'; <?php twitter_updates();?> echo '</p>'; echo '<p class="text-center"><a href="http://twitter.com/iqnavigator">Follow us on twitter</a></p>'; echo '</div>'; echo '</div>'; The whole darn long statement, for context reasons: <div class="sidebar"> <?php if (!is_search() && !is_page('Our Clients') && !is_archive()){ if($post->post_parent) { $children = wp_list_pages("title_li=&child_of=".$post->post_parent."&echo=0&depth=1&exclude=85,87,89,181,97,184"); } else { $children = wp_list_pages("title_li=&child_of=".$post->ID."&echo=0&depth=1&exclude=85,87,89,181,97,184"); } if ($children) { ?> <div class="panel links subnav"> <h3>In This Section</h3> <ul class="subnav"> <?php echo $children; ?> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> <?php } } if(is_page('Our Clients') || in_category('Our Clients') || is_category('Our Clients')) { echo '<div class="panel links subnav">'; echo '<h3>In This Section</h3>'; echo '<ul class="subnav">'; wp_list_categories('child_of=21&title_li='); echo '</ul>'; echo '<p>&nbsp;</p>'; echo '</div>'; } else if (in_category('Blog')) { //PUT YOUR CODE HERE // echo get_page_content(34); echo '<div class="panel featured-resource">'; echo '<h4>Blog Contributors</h4>'; echo '<ul class"subnav">'; echo '<li><a href="/company/executive-team/john-f-martin/">John Martin</a></li>'; echo '<li><a href="/company/executive-team/kieran-brady/">Kieran Brady</a></li>'; echo '<li><a href="/company/executive-team/art-knapp/">Art Knapp</a></li>'; echo '</ul>'; echo '</div>'; echo '<div class="panel iq-news">'; echo '<h4><span><a href="/category/blog/feed"><img src="/wp-content/themes/iq/images/rss-icon.gif" alt="Subscribe to our feed"/></a></span>IQNavigator Blog</h4>'; <?php query_posts('category_name=Blog&showposts=2'); if (have_posts()) : ?> echo '<ul>'; <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> echo '<li><a href="<?php the_permalink();?>"><?php the_title();?> </a></li>'; <?php endwhile;?> echo '</ul>'; <?php endif;?> echo '<div class="twitter">'; echo '<p id="twitter-updates">'; <?php twitter_updates();?> echo '</p>'; echo '<p class="text-center"><a href="http://twitter.com/iqnavigator">Follow us on twitter</a></p>'; echo '</div>'; echo '</div>'; //END CODE HERE } if (!is_page('Resources')) { ?> <div class="panel featured-resource"> <h4>Featured Resource</h4> <div class="embed"> <?php $custom_fields = get_post_custom(); $featured_video_code = $custom_fields['Featured Video Code']; if($featured_video_code) { foreach ( $featured_video_code as $key => $value ) { $the_code = $value; } $featured_video_link = $custom_fields['Featured Video Link']; foreach ( $featured_video_link as $key => $value ) { $the_link = $value; } $featured_video_text = $custom_fields['Featured Video Text']; foreach ( $featured_video_text as $key => $value ) { $the_text = $value; } if($the_code) { echo $the_code; } if($the_text) { echo '<ul>'; echo '<li>'; if($the_link) { echo '<a href="' . $the_link .
