  • Is it a good idea for me to learn Python before C or some other Compiler language?

    Right now I am going through MIT's introduction to Computer Science course via OpenCourseWare. As a part of this course I am learning the Python Language. I've read a lot of things about the benefits of learning C. Before I dig any deeper into Python I wonder if I will be hindered or helped by learning Python first. Do you think that I will develop any bad habits or anything like that from Python?

  • Installing g77 in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit)

    I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit-i386) in my desktop PC. I need g77 compiler for some specific applications. The app can only be installed after having g77 compiler. This specific app is designed based on g77 fortran compiler and can't be used with gfortran which is the standard available compiler in 12.04 LTS. And guide me the procedure to install g77 in 12.04. I have been trying apt-get update & apt-get install g77 after changing the sources.list file. After processing I am able to install g77 but when i try to compile a fortran program, it shows error /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crt1.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crti.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Please help me. I m struggling a lot to fix this.

  • What database options do I have for the Blackberry?

    I notice most of the discussions about Blackberry database options are old, and generally not too informative. As of today, March 31st, 2010, what is the best, most universally supported, free database option available for Blackberry developers? I heard SQLite is available for JDE v5, but last I checked, that was still in beta, and I didn't want to commit to developing on a system that is not supported by most of the phones in service. Thing is, I don't see any dates on these claims. For all I know, the announcements I am reading are from 2008. So, I am still on v 4.7. I need to use a relational DB for the app I am developing, but there aren't many resources for DB handling available - or at least resources that are useful to me. I find a lot of "tutorials" that assume you know everything there is to know about Blackberry development, or Java. But no complete classes or anything. Many of these examples don't even work. Eclipse gives warnings and errors from code copied and pasted from other people's examples. I can answer any questions that may assist in this case. Hopefully, this thread will help many BB developers in the future.

  • Why isn't the @Deprecated annotation triggering a compiler warning about a method?

    I am trying to use the @Deprecated annotation. The @Deprecated documentation says that: "Compilers warn when a deprecated program element is used or overridden in non-deprecated code".   • Does a c/c++ compiler optimize constant divisions by power-of-two value into shifts?

    Question says it all. Does anyone know if the following... size_t div(size_t value) { const size_t x = 64; return value / x; } ...is optimized into? size_t div(size_t value) { return value >> 6; } Do compilers do this? (My interest lies in GCC). Are there situations where it does and others where it doesn't? I would really like to know, because every time I write a division that could be optimized like this I spend some mental energy wondering about whether precious nothings of a second is wasted doing a division where a shift would suffice.

  • How to set title and class in the HTML for the options of a ModelChoiceField?

    I have a model class MyModel(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=80, unique=True) parent = models.ForeignKey('self', null=True, blank=True) I want to render a ModelChoiceField for that model that looks like: <select name="mymodel" id="id_mymodel"> <option value="1" title="Value 1" class="">Value 1</option> <option value="2" title="Value 2" class="Value 1">Value 2</option> </select> The differences between this output and the default output for a ModelChoiceField are the title and class elements in the OPTION tag. They don't exist in ModelChoiceField's default output. For my purposes: The title element is supposed to be the Option Name. The class element is supposed to be self.parent.name. (this is my problem) So, in the HTML snippet above, Value 1 has no parent and Value 2 has a parent of Value 1. What is the best mechanism to change ModelChoiceField's default HTML output? EDIT: I understand how to create a new Widget for rendering HTML. The problem is how to render a value from the underlying model in each of the options.

    Write a program with a word containing @ character as an input. If the word doesn't contain @, it should prompt the user for a word with @. Once a word with @ is read, it should output the word then terminate.   • Confused as to how to validate spring mvc form, what are my options?

    Latest spring mvc, using freemarker. Hoping someone could tell me what my options are in terms of validating a form with spring mvc, and what the recommend way would be to do this. I have a form that doesn't map directly to a model, it has input fields that when posted, will be used to initialze 2 model objects which I will then need to validate, and if they pass I will save them. If they fail, I want to return back to the form, pre-fill the values with what the user entered and display the error messages. I have read here and there about 2 methods, once of which I have done and understand how it works: @RequestMapping(...., method = RequestMethod.POST) public ModelAndView myMethod(@Valid MyModel, BindingResult bindingResult) { ModelAndView mav = new ModelAndView("some/view"); mav.addObject("mymodel", myModel); if(bindingResult.hasErrors()) { return mav; } } Now this worked if my form mapped directly to the form, but in my situation I have: form fields that don't map to any specific model, they have a few properties from 2 models. before validation occurrs, I need to create the 2 models manually, set the values from the values from the form, and manually set some properties also: Call validate on both models (model1, model2), and append these error messages to the errors collection which I need to pass back to the same view page if things don't work. when the form posts, I have to do some database calls, and based on those results may need to add additional messages to the errors collection Can someone tell me how to do this sort of validation? Pseudo code below: Model1 model1 = new Model1(); Model2 model2 = new Model2(); // manually or somehow automatically set the posted form values to model1 and model2. // set some fields manually, not from posted form model1.setProperty10(GlobalSettings.getDefaultProperty10()); model2.setProperty11(GlobalSettings.getDefaultProperty11()); // db calls, if they fail, add to errors collection if(bindingResult.hasErrors()) { return mav; } // validation passed, save Model1Service.save(model1); Model2Service.save(model2); redirect to another view Update I have using the JSR 303 annotations on my models right now, and it would great if I can use those still.   • Delphi LoadLibrary Failing to find DLL other directory - any good options?

    Two Delphi programs need to load foo.dll, which contains some code that injects a client-auth certificate into a SOAP request. foo.dll resides in c:\fooapp\foo.dll and is normally loaded by c:\fooapp\foo.exe. That works fine. The other program needs the same functionality, but it resides in c:\program files\unwantedstepchild\sadapp.exe. Both aps load the DLL with this code: FOOLib := LoadLibrary('foo.dll'); ... If FOOLib <> 0 then begin FOOProc := GetProcAddress(FOOLib , 'xInjectCert'); FOOProc(myHttpRequest, Data, CertName); end; It works great for foo.exe, as the dll is right there. sadapp.exe fails to load the library, so FOOLib is 0, and the rest never gets called. The sadapp.exe program therefore silently fails to inject the cert, and when we test against production, it the cert is missing, do the connection fails. Obviously, we should have fully-qualified the path to the DLL. Without going into a lot of details, there were aspects of the testing that masked this problem until recently, and now it's basically too late to fix in code, as that would require a full regression test, and there isn't time for that. Since we've painted ourselves into a corner, I need to know if there are any options that I've overlooked. While we can't change the code (for this release), we CAN tweak the installer. I've found that placing c:\fooapp into the path works. As does adding a second copy of foo.dll directly into c:\program files\unwantedstepchild. c:\fooapp\foo.exe will always be running while sadapp.exe is running, so I was hoping that Windows would find it that way, but apparently not. Is there a way to tell Windows that I really want that same DLL? Maybe a manifest or something? This is the sort of "magic bullet" that I'm looking for. I know I can: Modify the windows path, probably in the installer. That's ugly. Add a second copy of the DLL, directly into the unwantedstepchild folder. Also ugly Delay the project while we code and test a proper fix. Unacceptable. Other? Thanks for any guidance, especially with "Other". I understand that this issue is not necessarily specific to Delphi. Thanks!

Models for hierarchical data: slides with good explanations of tradeoffs and example usage Representing hierarchies in MySQL: very good overview of Nested Set in particular Hierarchical data in RDBMSs: most comprehensive and well organized set of links I've seen, but not much in the way on explanation Options Ones I am aware of and general features: Adjacency List: Columns: ID, ParentID Easy to implement. Cheap node moves, inserts, and deletes. Expensive to find level (can store as a computed column), ancestry & descendants (Bridge Hierarchy combined with level column can solve), path (Lineage Column can solve). Use Common Table Expressions in those databases that support them to traverse. Nested Set (a.k.a Modified Preorder Tree Traversal) First described by Joe Celko - covered in depth in his book Trees and Hierarchies in SQL for Smarties Columns: Left, Right Cheap level, ancestry, descendants Compared to Adjacency List, moves, inserts, deletes more expensive. Requires a specific sort order (e.g. created). So sorting all descendants in a different order requires additional work. Nested Intervals Combination of Nested Sets and Materialized Path where left/right columns are floating point decimals instead of integers and encode the path information. Bridge Table (a.k.a. Closure Table: some good ideas about how to use triggers for maintaining this approach) Columns: ancestor, descendant Stands apart from table it describes. Can include some nodes in more than one hierarchy. Cheap ancestry and descendants (albeit not in what order) For complete knowledge of a hierarchy needs to be combined with another option. Flat Table A modification of the Adjacency List that adds a Level and Rank (e.g. ordering) column to each record.     Hello Again, I posted a question on here and got an answer within minutes I'm hoping the wizards on here can help me again. Okay so I'm using a script I found online to try and add this function to a shopping cart form. Here's the setup. I have a payment method dropdown with Visa, Mastercard and Bank Withdrawal as the options. For the credit cards I have one hidden div with a certain set of fields, and for the bank I have another hidden div.   • Setting up apache to view https pages

    I am trying to set up a site using vmware workstation, ubuntu 11.10, and apache2. The site works fine but now the https pages are not showing up. For example if I try to go to https://www.mysite.com/checkout I just see the message Not Found The requested URL /checkout/ was not found on this server. I dont really know what I am doing and have tried a lot of things to get the ssl certificates in there right.   • overriding enumeration base type using pragma or code change

    Problem: I am using a big C/C++ code base which works on gcc & visual studio compilers where enum base type is by default 32-bit(integer type). This code also has lots of inline + embedded assembly which treats enum as integer type and enum data is used as 32-bit flags in many cases. When compiled this code with realview ARM RVCT 2.2 compiler, we started getting many issues since realview compiler decides enum base type automatically based on the value an enum is set to. http://www.keil.com/support/man/docs/armccref/armccref_Babjddhe.htm For example, Consider the below enum, enum Scale { TimesOne, //0 TimesTwo, //1 TimesFour, //2 TimesEight, //3 }; This enum is used as a 32-bit flag. but compiler optimizes it to unsigned char type for this enum. Using --enum_is_int compiler option is not a good solution for our case, since it converts all the enum's to 32-bit which will break interaction with any external code compiled without --enum_is_int. This is warning i found in RVCT compilers & Library guide, The --enum_is_int option is not recommended for general use and is not required for ISO-compatible source. Code compiled with this option is not compliant with the ABI for the ARM Architecture (base standard) [BSABI], and incorrect use might result in a failure at runtime. This option is not supported by the C++ libraries. Question How to convert all enum's base type (by hand-coded changes) to use 32-bit without affecting value ordering? enum Scale { TimesOne=0x00000000, TimesTwo, // 0x00000001 TimesFour, // 0x00000002 TimesEight, //0x00000003 }; I tried the above change. But compiler optimizes this also for our bad luck. :( There is some syntax in .NET like enum Scale: int Is this a ISO C++ standard and ARM compiler lacks it? There is no #pragma to control this enum in ARM RVCT 2.2 compiler. Is there any hidden pragma available ?

    I have installed a fresh copy of windows xp 2002 with SP2, and then VS.net 2008 enterprise edition. I am trying to build a simplest possible web application, and its not compiling giving error csc.exe not found. And if I change the value from v3.5 to v2.0 in the of csharp section, then also it compiles fine. But then all my Linq Queries are not recognized by the compiler. But System.Linq and all classes present in it are accessible in the code. Please help in this weird behavior.

I've tried the following: <flex-config> <o>absolute/path/to/filename</o> </flex-config> and <flex-config> <output>absolute/path/to/filename</output> </flex-config> and <flex-config> <compiler> <o>absolute/path/to/filename</o> </compiler> </flex-config> and <flex-config> <compiler> <output>absolute/path/to/filename</output> </compiler> </flex-config> but none have worked. I'm on a PC using Flash Builder 4. Has anyone else done this? Also, ideally, I want to use a relative path instead of absolute. I can't get this to work either, even if I do so in the "additional compiler arguments" field of the Project configuration. Thanks in advance!
