  • Best jQuery Libraries, Plug-Ins and Controls

    - by schnieds
    Worried About The Loss Of ASP.NET Controls in MVC? Don’t BeIf you are hesitant of moving to ASP.NET MVC because you are worried about losing all of the awesome ASP.NET controls that you are so used to using, don’t be. Wonderful client side controls already exist to replace most, if not all, of the most used ASP.NET controls (and these controls provide a MUCH BETTER user experience.) Here is a list of my favorite jQuery plug-ins and libraries that make user interface development so much easier... [Read More Here]Aaron Schniederhttp://www.churchofficeonline.com

  • Uploading Files Using ASP.NET Web Forms, Generic Handler and jQuery

    - by bipinjoshi
    In order to upload files from the client machine to the server ASP.NET developers use FileUpload server control. The FileUpload server control essentially renders an INPUT element with its type set to file and allows you to select one or more files. The actual upload operation is performed only when the form is posted to the server. Instead of making a full page postback you can use jQuery to make an Ajax call to the server and POST the selected files to a generic handler (.ashx). The generic handler can then save the files to a specified folder. The remainder of this post shows how this can be accomplished.http://www.bipinjoshi.net/articles/f2a2f1ee-e18a-416b-893e-883c800f83f4.aspx

  • Jquery/JavaScript's role in MVC (zend)

    - by user7543288
    I have my doubts if this question should have went into the programmers.stackexchange.com or not…but I would like to ask all you experienced developers out there, how do you see the connection that jquery - javascript has with the MVC. How would you explain it to a n00b? does it bridge the communication between the View and the Controller? or what? I have done my research and I believe this is the best article explaining it http://www.alistapart.com/articles/javascript-mvc/ but I would like to hear your point of view..

  • jQuery Mobile Frame Forwarding [on hold]

    - by Nizam
    I have a site that does a standard forward to another site [301 Redirect]. In the redirected site, I detect if the device is a mobile using the following code: if (/Android|webOS|iPhone|iPad|iPod|BlackBerry/i.test(navigator.userAgent)) { window.location.replace("Mobile/Login/Login.aspx") } else { window.location.replace("Apps/Login/Login.aspx") } It works and jQuery mobile makes the site fits device very well. To do so, I use the following code in ASPX page: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1" /> The problem is that I am wanting to frame forward - instead of standard forward - (there are a lot of advantages), but the site is not fitted for the device anymore, and even the icon I have chosen for my page is not well defined anymore. The code I use to set the icon of page is: <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="../../Apps/Imagens/Icone.png" /> My site is hosted by Mochahost My question is: Is there anything I could do to make it works?

  • jQuery setTimeout delay for an element

    - by Trouble
    Is there an easier way to wait for an element to load ( by independant script/mootools/other ). For example: I am waiting for a google map to load, but I don't want to use its API for checks. So I made two functions: function checkIfexist() { if(jQuery('#container').length) return 0; else reload(1); } function reload(mode) { setTimeout(function(){ do stuff . . . if(mode==1) checkIfexist(); }, 400); } I am starting it with reload(1); Is there an easier way to use setTimeout in such a way? I don't want to use delay, wait or whatever.

  • Detect whether or not a specific attribute was valid on the model

    - by Sir Code-A-Lot
    Having created my own validation attribute deriving from System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations.ValidationAttribute, I wish to be able to detect from my controller, whether or not that specific attribute was valid on the model. My setup: public class MyModel { [Required] [CustomValidation] [SomeOtherValidation] public string SomeProperty { get; set; } } public class CustomValidationAttribute : ValidationAttribute { public override bool IsValid(object value) { // Custom validation logic here } } Now, how do I detect from the controller whether validation of CustomValidationAttribute succeeded or not? I have been looking at the Exception property of ModelError in the ModelState, but I have no way of adding a custom exception to it from my CustomValidationAttribute. Right now I have resorted to checking for a specific error message in the ModelState: public ActionResult PostModel(MyModel model) { if(ModelState.Where(i => i.Value.Errors.Where((e => e.ErrorMessage == CustomValidationAttribute.SharedMessage)).Any()).Any()) DoSomeCustomStuff(); // The rest of the action here } And changed my CustomValidationAttribute to: public class CustomValidationAttribute : ValidationAttribute { public static string SharedMessage = "CustomValidationAttribute error"; public override bool IsValid(object value) { ErrorMessage = SharedMessage; // Custom validation logic here } } I don't like relying on string matching, and this way the ErrorMessage property is kind of misused. What are my options?

  • JQuery validation without requiring MS scripts in asp.net mvc2 project

    - by Jim Geurts
    Is it possible to use the new client side validation features of asp.net MVC 2 without having to use the MS scripts (MicrosoftAjax.js, MicrosoftMvcAjax.js, MicrosoftMvcValidation.js)? I use JQuery throughout my application; JQuery has a great plugin for validation and I don't really want to force my users to load MS scripts just for validation. Is this possible? If so, any suggestions for how to accomplish it are appreciated.

  • ASP.NET MVC2 Model Validation Fails with Non-US Date Format

    - by 81bronco
    I have a small MVC2 app that displays in two cultures: en-US and es-MX. One portion contains a user input for a date that is pre-populated with the current date in the Model. When using en-US, the date field is displayed as MM/dd/yyyy and can be changed using the same format without causing any validation errors. When using es-MX, the date field is displayed as dd/MM/yyyy, but when the date is edited in this format, the server-side validation fails with the message: The value '17/05/1991' is not valid for The Date. One of the first things that jumps out at me about that message is that it is not localized. Both the message itself (which I do not think I can control) and the Display Name of the field (which I can control and is localized in my code). Should be displaying in a localized format. I have tried stepping through the code to see exactly where the validation is failing, but it seems to be happening inside some of the compiled MVC or DataAnnotations code that I cannot see. Application details: IIS6, ASP.NET 3.5 (C#), MVC 2 RTM Sample Model Code: public class TestVieModel{ [LocalizedDisplayNameDisplayName("TheDateDisplayName", NameResourceType=typeof(Resources.Model.TestViewModel))] [Required(ErrorMessageResourceName="TheDateValidationMessageRequired", ErrorMessageResourceType=typeof(Resources.Model.TestViewModel))] [DataType(DataType.Date)] public DateTime TheDate { get; set; } } Sample Controller Action Code: [HttpPost] [ValidateAntiForgeryToken] public ActionResult Save(TestViewModel model) { if(ModelState.IsValid) { // <--- Always is false when using es-MX and a date foramtted as dd/MM/yyyy. // Do other stuff return this.View("Complete", model); } // Validation failed, redisplay the form. return this.View("Enter", model); } Sample View Code: <%@ Page Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<HispanicSweeps.Web.Model.LosMets.EnterViewModel>" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" > <head runat="server"> <title>Test</title> </head> <body> <% using (Html.BeginForm()) {%> <%= Html.ValidationSummary(true) %> <fieldset> <legend>Fields</legend> <div class="editor-label"> <%= Html.LabelFor(model => model.DateOfBirth) %> </div> <div class="editor-field"> <%= Html.EditorFor(model => model.DateOfBirth) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.DateOfBirth) %> </div> <p><input type="submit" value="Save" /></p> </fieldset> <% } %> </body> </html>

  • jQuery validation plugin dependencies

    - by Idsa
    Does jQuery validation plugin have some dependencies? For example, I saw blogposts that said delegate plugin should be used... but I don't see this plugin reference at any validation plugin example (for example, here: http://jquery.bassistance.de/validate/demo/milk/). The question arouse because validation plugin doesn't catch submit at my application.

  • Business rule validation of hierarchical list of objects ASP.NET MVC

    - by SergeanT
    I have a list of objects that are organized in a tree using a Depth property: public class Quota { [Range(0, int.MaxValue, ErrorMessage = "Please enter an amount above zero.")] public int Amount { get; set; } public int Depth { get; set; } [Required] [RegularExpression("^[a-zA-Z]+$")] public string Origin { get; set; } // ... another properties with validation attributes } For data example (amount - origin) 100 originA 200 originB 50 originC 150 originD the model data looks like: IList<Quota> model = new List<Quota>(); model.Add(new Quota{ Amount = 100, Depth = 0, Origin = "originA"); model.Add(new Quota{ Amount = 200, Depth = 0, Origin = "originB"); model.Add(new Quota{ Amount = 50, Depth = 1, Origin = "originC"); model.Add(new Quota{ Amount = 150, Depth = 1, Orinig = "originD"); Editing of the list Then I use Editing a variable length list, ASP.NET MVC 2-style to raise editing of the list. Controller actions QuotaController.cs: public class QuotaController : Controller { // // GET: /Quota/EditList public ActionResult EditList() { IList<Quota> model = // ... assigments as in example above; return View(viewModel); } // // POST: /Quota/EditList [HttpPost] public ActionResult EditList(IList<Quota> quotas) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { // ... save logic return RedirectToAction("Details"); } return View(quotas); // Redisplay the form with errors } // ... other controller actions } View EditList.aspx: <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" ... Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<IList<Quota>>" %> ... <h2>Edit Quotas</h2> <%=Html.ValidationSummary("Fix errors:") %> <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { foreach (var quota in Model) { Html.RenderPartial("QuotaEditorRow", quota); } %> <% } %> ... Partial View QuotaEditorRow.ascx: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<Quota>" %> <div class="quotas" style="margin-left: <%=Model.Depth*45 %>px"> <% using (Html.BeginCollectionItem("Quotas")) { %> <%=Html.HiddenFor(m=>m.Id) %> <%=Html.HiddenFor(m=>m.Depth) %> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(m=>m.Amount, new {@class = "number", size = 5})%> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(m=>m.Amount) %> Origin: <%=Html.TextBoxFor(m=>m.Origin)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(m=>m.Origin) %> ... <% } %> </div> Business rule validation How do I implement validation of business rule: Amount of quota and sum of amounts of nested quotas should equal (e.a. 200 = 50 + 150 in example)? I want to appropriate inputs Html.TextBoxFor(m=>m.Amount) be highlighted red if the rule is broken for it. In example if user enters not 200, but 201 - it should be red on submit. Using sever validation only. Thanks a lot for any advise.

  • jquery disable rule validation on a single field

    - by shake
    I am using mvc to create forms that are generated at runtime. For validation, I am trying my hand at the jquery validation library which is very convenient to use. I have the validation expression of each field in the cdata attribute of the tag <input type="text" name="xyz" id="xyz" class="defaultTextBox" cdata="{validate:{required:true, decimal:true, messages: {required:'Please enter an decimal value', decimal:'Please enter a valid decimal'}}}"> This works beautifully. Now one more requirement I have is that some fields are being shown and hidden according to the logic on the page and I need to disable the validation on the hidden fields such that they do not interfere with the form submission. Just toggling the required:true to false and back to true should be enough. Only i do not know how. Anyone has any experience with that?

  • JQuery and PHP validation problem?

    - by DuH
    I want to do the validation on my PHP side and then have my JQuery code display your changes have been saved when the submit button is clicked but the JQuery code states that the changes have been saved even when the validation fails. How can i fix this so that PHP can do the validation and then JQuery can do its thing when PHP has finished its validation? Here is my Jquery code. $(function() { $('#changes-saved').hide(); $('.save-button').click(function() { $.post($('#contact-form').attr('action'), $('#contact-form').serialize(), function(html) { $('div.contact-info-form').html(html); $('#changes-saved').hide(); $('#changes-saved').html('Your changes have been saved!').fadeIn(4000).show(); }); $('a').click(function () { $('#changes-saved').empty(); $('#changes-saved').hide(); }); return false; // prevent normal submit }); });

  • How to Use Images as Navigation with innerfade Slideshow?

    - by Katie
    I am very new to JavaScript and only have the most basic understanding of how it works, so please bear with me. :) I'm using the jquery.innerfade.js script to create a slideshow with fade transitions for a website I'm developing, and I have added navigation buttons (which are set as background-images) that navigate between the “slides”. The navigation buttons have three states: default/off, hover, and on (each state is a separate image). I created a separate JavaScript document to set the buttons to “on” when they are clicked. The “hover” state is achieved through the CSS. Both the slideshow and the navigation buttons work well. There is just one thing I want to add: I would like the appropriate navigation button to display as “on” while the related “slide” is “playing”. Here's the HTML: <div id="mainFeature"> <ul id="theFeature"> <li id="the1feature"><a href="#" name="#promo1"><img src="_images/carousel/promo1.jpg" /></a></li> <li id="the2feature"><a href="#" name="#promo2"><img src="_images/carousel/promo2.jpg" /></a></li> <li id="the3feature"><a href="#" name="#promo3"><img src="_images/carousel/promo3.jpg" /></a></li> </ul> <div id="promonav-con"> <div id="primarypromonav"> <ul class="links"> <li id="the1title" class="promotop"><a rel="1" href="#promo1" class="promo1" id="promo1" onMouseDown="promo1on()"><strong>Botox Cosmetic</strong></a></li> <li id="the2title" class="promotop"><a rel="2" href="#promo2" class="promo2" id="promo2" onMouseDown="promo2on()"><strong>Promo 2</strong></a></li> <li id="the3title" class="promotop"><a rel="3" href="#promo3" class="promo3" id="promo3" onMouseDown="promo3on()"><strong>Promo 3</strong></a></li> </ul> </div> </div> And here is the jquery.innerfade.js, with my changes: (function($) { $.fn.innerfade = function(options) { return this.each(function() { $.innerfade(this, options); }); }; $.innerfade = function(container, options) { var settings = { 'speed': 'normal', 'timeout': 2000, 'containerheight': 'auto', 'runningclass': 'innerfade', 'children': null }; if (options) $.extend(settings, options); if (settings.children === null) var elements = $(container).children(); else var elements = $(container).children(settings.children); if (elements.length > 1) { $(container).css('position', 'relative').css('height', settings.containerheight).addClass(settings.runningclass); for (var i = 0; i < elements.length; i++) { $(elements[i]).css('z-index', String(elements.length-i)).css('position', 'absolute').hide(); }; this.ifchanger = setTimeout(function() { $.innerfade.next(elements, settings, 1, 0); }, settings.timeout); $(elements[0]).show(); } }; $.innerfade.next = function(elements, settings, current, last) { $(elements[last]).fadeOut(settings.speed); $(elements[current]).fadeIn(settings.speed, function() { removeFilter($(this)[0]); }); if ((current + 1) < elements.length) { current = current + 1; last = current - 1; } else { current = 0; last = elements.length - 1; } this.ifchanger = setTimeout((function() { $.innerfade.next(elements, settings, current, last); }), settings.timeout); }; })(jQuery); // **** remove Opacity-Filter in ie **** function removeFilter(element) { if(element.style.removeAttribute){ element.style.removeAttribute('filter'); } } jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('ul#theFeature').innerfade({ speed: 1000, timeout: 7000, containerheight: '291px' }); // jQuery('#mainFeature .links').children('li').children('a').attr('href', 'javascript:void(0);'); jQuery('#mainFeature .links').children('li').children('a').click(function() { clearTimeout(jQuery.innerfade.ifchanger); for(i=1;i<5;i++) { jQuery('#the'+i+'feature').css("display", "none"); //jQuery('#the'+i+'title').children('a').css("background-color","#226478"); } // if(the_widths[(jQuery(this).attr('rel')-1)]==960) { // jQuery("#vic").hide(); // } else { // jQuery("#vic").show(); // } // jQuery('#the'+(jQuery(this).attr('rel'))+'title').css("background-color", "#286a7f"); jQuery('#the'+(jQuery(this).attr('rel'))+'feature').css("display", "block"); clearTimeout(jQuery.innerfade.ifchanger); }); }); And the separate JavaScript that I created: function promo1on() {document.getElementById("promo1").className="promo1on"; document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2"; document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2"; } function promo2on() {document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2on"; document.getElementById("promo1").className="promo1"; document.getElementById("promo3").className="promo3"; } function promo3on() {document.getElementById("promo3").className="promo3on"; document.getElementById("promo1").className="promo1"; document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2"; } And, finally, the CSS: #mainFeature {float: left; width: 672px; height: 290px; margin: 0 0 9px 0; list-style: none;} #mainFeature li {list-style: none;} #mainFeature #theFeature {margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative;} #mainFeature #theFeature li {position: absolute; margin: 0; list-style: none; position: relative; font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; width: 463px; height: 26px;} #mainFeature .links li.promotop {list-style: none; display: block; float: left; display: inline;   • jQuery DataTables is messing op my CSS grids in IE8, how to fix?

    - by Brendan Vogt
    I am using ASP.NET MVC3 with the jQuery Datatable plug in. I am having an issues with my CSS layout when the datatable is on a page. If there is no datatable then everything displays fine. When the datatable is on the screen then it overlaps the footer of my website. I can't seem to get this to display correctly. I have a grid layout using the YUI3, and this is what I all use from YUI3 (in this order): cssreset-min cssfonts-min cssgrids-min cssbase-min This works fine in the latest version of FireFox. I have tried tried adding clear:both but it didn't work. Is the an online service like jsbin where I can paste/upload my HTML/CSS code/files? Code can viewed at: http://live.datatables.net/efosuj/3/edit. It displays correctly in the available viewer but when run separate in IE8 then it gives issues. UPDATE 2012-06-12 I managed to add the following and it works, but I would like to add it in a style, tried it but it didn't work: if (navigator.userAgent.toString().indexOf('MSIE') >= 0) { jQuery('#main-container').css('overflow', 'auto'); } This was added after the grid was loaded. Is this the only way to do this?

  • jQuery AutoComplete (jQuery UI 1.8rc3) with ASP.NET web service

    - by user296640
    Currently, I have this version of the autocomplete control working when returning XML from a .ashx handler. The xml looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?> <States> <State> <Code>CA</Code> <Name>California</Name> </State> <State> <Code>NC</Code> <Name>North Carolina</Name> </State> <State> <Code>SC</Code> <Name>South Carolina</Name> </State> The autocomplete code looks like this: $('.autocompleteTest').autocomplete( { source: function(request, response) { var list = []; $.ajax({ url: "http://commonservices.qa.kirkland.com/StateLookup.ashx", dataType: "xml", async: false, data: request, success: function(xmlResponse) { list = $("State", xmlResponse).map(function() { return { value: $("Code", this).text(), label: $("Name", this).text() }; }).get(); } }); response(list); }, focus: function(event, ui) { $('.autocompleteTest').val(ui.item.label); return false; }, select: function(event, ui) { $('.autocompleteTest').val(ui.item.label); $('.autocompleteValue').val(ui.item.value); return false; } }); For various reasons, I'd rather be calling an ASP.NET web service, but I can't get it to work. To change over to the service (I'm doing a local service to keep it simple), the start of the autocomplete code is: $('.autocompleteTest').autocomplete( { source: function(request, response) { var list = []; $.ajax({ url: "/Services/GeneralLookup.asmx/StateList", dataType: "xml", This code is on a page at the root of the site and the GeneralLookup.asmx is in a subfolder named Services. But a breakpoint in the web service never gets hit, and no autocomplete list is generated. In case it makes a difference, the XML that comes from the asmx is: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <string xmlns="http://www.kirkland.com/"><State> <Code>CA</Code> <Name>California</Name> </State> <State> <Code>NC</Code> <Name>North Carolina</Name> </State> <State> <Code>SC</Code> <Name>South Carolina</Name> </State></string> Functionally equivalent since I never use the name of the root node in the mapping code. I haven't seen anything in the jQuery docs about calling a .asmx service from this control, but a .ajax call is a .ajax call, right? I've tried various different paths to the .asmx (~/Services/), and I've even moved the service to be in the same path to eliminate these issues. No luck with either. Any ideas?

  • jQuery encoding values differently than expected for jQuery.ajax data elements

    - by Adam Tuttle
    I'm using jQuery.ajax() to make a PUT request to a REST web service, but seeing some really strange serialization behavior. (Before you say it: Yes, I know that not all browsers support PUT -- this is just an example implementation for an api/framework, and ultimately will not be called by a browser, but rather by a server-side library that does support the extra http verbs.) Here's the form: <form action="/example/api/artist" method="put" id="update"> First Name: <input type="text" name="firstname" /><br/> Last Name: <input type="text" name="lastname" /><br/> Address: <input type="text" name="address" /><br/> City: <input type="text" name="city" /><br/> State: <input type="text" name="state" /><br/> Postal Code: <input type="text" name="postalcode" /><br/> Email: <input type="text" name="email" /><br/> Phone: <input type="text" name="phone" /><br/> Fax: <input type="text" name="fax" /><br/> Password: <input type="text" name="thepassword" /><br/> <input type="hidden" name="debug" value="true" /> <input type="submit" value="Update Artist" /> <input type="reset" value="Cancel" id="updateCancel" /> </form> And the JS: $("#update").submit(function(e){ e.preventDefault(); var frm = $(this); $.ajax({ url: frm.attr('action'), data:{ firstname: $("#update input[name=firstname]").val(), lastname: $("#update input[name=lastname]").val(), address: $("#update input[name=address]").val(), city: $("#update input[name=city]").val(), state: $("#update input[name=state]").val(), postalcode: $("#update input[name=postalcode]").val(), email: $("#update input[name=email]").val(), phone: $("#update input[name=phone]").val(), fax: $("#update input[name=fax]").val(), thepassword: $("#update input[name=thepassword]").val() }, type: frm.attr('method'), dataType: "json", contentType: "application/json", success: function (data, textStatus, xhr){ console.log(data); reloadData(); }, error: function (xhr, textStatus, err){ console.log(textStatus); console.log(err); } }); }); When using FireBug, I see the request go through as this: firstname=Austin&lastname=Weber&address=25463+Main+Street%2C+Suite+C&city=Berkeley&state=CA&postalcode=94707-4513&email=austin%40life.com&phone=555-513-4318&fax=510-513-4888&thepassword=nopolyes That's not horrible, but ideally I'd rather get %20 instead of + for spaces. I tried wrapping each field value lookup in an escape: firstname: escape($("#update input[name=firstname]").val()) But that makes things worse: firstname=Austin&lastname=Weber&address=25463%2520Main%2520Street%252C%2520Suite%2520C&city=Berkeley&state=CA&postalcode=94707-4513&email=austin%40life.com&phone=555-513-4318&fax=510-513-4888&thepassword=nopolyes In this case, the value is being escaped twice; so first the space is encoded to %20, and then the % sign is escaped to %25 resulting in the %2520 for spaces, and %252C for the comma in the address field. What am I doing wrong here?

  • Changing an HTML Form's Target with jQuery

    - by Rick Strahl
    This is a question that comes up quite frequently: I have a form with several submit or link buttons and one or more of the buttons needs to open a new Window. How do I get several buttons to all post to the right window? If you're building ASP.NET forms you probably know that by default the Web Forms engine sends button clicks back to the server as a POST operation. A server form has a <form> tag which expands to this: <form method="post" action="default.aspx" id="form1"> Now you CAN change the target of the form and point it to a different window or frame, but the problem with that is that it still affects ALL submissions of the current form. If you multiple buttons/links and they need to go to different target windows/frames you can't do it easily through the <form runat="server"> tag. Although this discussion uses ASP.NET WebForms as an example, realistically this is a general HTML problem although likely more common in WebForms due to the single form metaphor it uses. In ASP.NET MVC for example you'd have more options by breaking out each button into separate forms with its own distinct target tag. However, even with that option it's not always possible to break up forms - for example if multiple targets are required but all targets require the same form data to the be posted. A common scenario here is that you might have a button (or link) that you click where you still want some server code to fire but at the end of the request you actually want to display the content in a new window. A common operation where this happens is report generation: You click a button and the server generates a report say in PDF format and you then want to display the PDF result in a new window without killing the content in the current window. Assuming you have other buttons on the same Page that need to post to base window how do you get the button click to go to a new window? Can't  you just use a LinkButton or other Link Control? At first glance you might think an easy way to do this is to use an ASP.NET LinkButton to do this - after all a LinkButton creates a hyper link that CAN accept a target and it also posts back to the server, right? However, there's no Target property, although you can set the target HTML attribute easily enough. Code like this looks reasonable: <asp:LinkButton runat="server" ID="btnNewTarget" Text="New Target" target="_blank" OnClick="bnNewTarget_Click" /> But if you try this you'll find that it doesn't work. Why? Because ASP.NET creates postbacks with JavaScript code that operates on the current window/frame: <a id="btnNewTarget" target="_blank" href="javascript:__doPostBack(&#39;btnNewTarget&#39;,&#39;&#39;)">New Target</a> What happens with a target tag is that before the JavaScript actually executes a new window is opened and the focus shifts to the new window. The new window of course is empty and has no __doPostBack() function nor access to the old document. So when you click the link a new window opens but the window remains blank without content - no server postback actually occurs. Natch that idea. Setting the Form Target for a Button Control or LinkButton So, in order to send Postback link controls and buttons to another window/frame, both require that the target of the form gets changed dynamically when the button or link is clicked. Luckily this is rather easy to do however using a little bit of script code and jQuery. Imagine you have two buttons like this that should go to another window: <asp:LinkButton runat="server" ID="btnNewTarget" Text="New Target" OnClick="ClickHandler" /> <asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnButtonNewTarget" Text="New Target Button" OnClick="ClickHandler" /> ClickHandler in this case is any routine that generates the output you want to display in the new window. Generally this output will not come from the current page markup but is generated externally - like a PDF report or some report generated by another application component or tool. The output generally will be either generated by hand or something that was generated to disk to be displayed with Response.Redirect() or Response.TransmitFile() etc. Here's the dummy handler that just generates some HTML by hand and displays it: protected void ClickHandler(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Perform some operation that generates HTML or Redirects somewhere else Response.Write("Some custom output would be generated here (PDF, non-Page HTML etc.)"); // Make sure this response doesn't display the page content // Call Response.End() or Response.Redirect() Response.End(); } To route this oh so sophisticated output to an alternate window for both the LinkButton and Button Controls, you can use the following simple script code: <script type="text/javascript"> $("#btnButtonNewTarget,#btnNewTarget").click(function () { $("form").attr("target", "_blank"); }); </script> So why does this work where the target attribute did not? The difference here is that the script fires BEFORE the target is changed to the new window. When you put a target attribute on a link or form the target is changed as the very first thing before the link actually executes. IOW, the link literally executes in the new window when it's done this way. By attaching a click handler, though we're not navigating yet so all the operations the script code performs (ie. __doPostBack()) and the collection of Form variables to post to the server all occurs in the current page. By changing the target from within script code the target change fires as part of the form submission process which means it runs in the correct context of the current page. IOW - the input for the POST is from the current page, but the output is routed to a new window/frame. Just what we want in this scenario. Voila you can dynamically route output to the appropriate window.© Rick Strahl, West Wind Technologies, 2005-2011Posted in ASP.NET  HTML  jQuery

  • PHP form class

    - by Oli
    I'm used to ASPNET and Django's methods of doing forms: nice object-orientated handlers, where you can specify regexes for validation and do everything in a very simple way. After months living happily without it, I've had to come back to PHP for a project and noticed that everything I used to do with PHP forms (manual output, manual validation, extreme pain) was utter rubbish. Is there a nice, simple and free class that does form generation and validation like it should be done? Clonefish has the right idea, but it's way off on the price tag.

  • Is my JS/Jquery methodology good?

    - by absentx
    I always struggle with which of the stack sites is best to post "questions of theory" like this, but I think programmers is the best, if not, as usual a mod will move it etc... I am seeking critique on what has become my normal methodology of writing javascript. I have become heavily reliant on the Jquery library, but I think this has helped me learn the native language better also. Anyways, please critique the following style of JS coding...buried are a lot of questions of scope, if you could point out the strengths and weaknesses of this style I would appreciate it. var critique ={ start: function(){ globalness = 'GLOBAL-GLOBAL'; //available to all critique's methods var notglobalness = 'LOCAL-LOCAL';// only available to critiques start method //am I using the "method" teminology properly here?? $('#stuff').on('click','a.closer-target',function(){ $target = $(this); if($target.hasClass('active')){ $target.removeClass('active'); } else{ $target.addClass('active'); critique.madness($target); } }) console.log(notglobalness+': at least I am useful at home'); console.log('note here that: '+notglobalness+' is no longer available after this point, lets continue on:'); critique.madness(notglobalness); }, madness: function($e){ // do a bunch of awesomeness with $e //but continue to keep it seperate because you think its best to keep things isolated. //send to the next function when complete here console.log('here is globalness, which is still available from the start method of critique!! ' + globalness); console.log('lets see if the globalness carries on to a new var object!!'); console.log('the locally isolated variable of NOTGLOBALNESS is available here because it was passed to this method, lets show it:'+$e); carryOn.start(); } } //end critique var carryOn={ start: function(){ console.log('any chance critique.globalness will work here??? lets see: ' +globalness); console.log('it absolutely does'); } } $(document).ready(critique.start);
