• How to detect a Triangle gesture with kinect?

  I am trying to implement a gesture recognition system which interprets the geometric gestures user makes and draws it on screen, I have some idea of how circle can be recognized, however i have no clue how to get started with triangle recognition. the data I have is X and Y coordinates of all points the gesture passed through. I get this data by tracking right hand. I found something online called Hough Transform , which is used for detecting lines but i am not sure whether it will work for discrete collection of points, Any ideas folks?

• Window 'onscreen' size puzzle

  Okay, a REALLY fundamental question about window sizes here... If I create an NSWindow in IB, set its size to 216 x 144 points (exactly 3 inches by 2 inches) then print the window, it measures exactly what I set it to in IB. However, the onscreen display size measures approximately 156 x 105 points. What causes this, and is there any way to force the window to display at the required size onscreen? I ultimately want to draw to this (semi-transparent) window then use it as a full-sized overlay for comparison against a separately loaded scanned image of known size.

• Creating a customized video using Flash and XML

  The problem: I have to create a Flash video (in CS3) that will query a MySQL database and display that data at certain points in the video. The bigger problem: I'm not a Flash/ActionScript developer, so this is all very foreign to me! I've divided this project into two parts: a.) dynamically generate an XML feed from the data using PHP (using an ID number passed in the URL's query string), and b.) be able to work with it in Flash. I've got the first part working, but am pretty lost in Flash. I can parse the XML, but I'm not sure how to set the data up as variables and attach it to a video's cue points. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial or offer some advice?

• Client no longer getting data from Web Service after introducing targetNamespace in XSD

  Sorry if there is way too much info in this post – there’s a load of story before I get to the actual problem. I thought I‘d include everything that might be relevant as I don’t have much clue what is wrong. I had a working web service and client (both written with VS 2008 in C#) for passing product data to an e-commerce site. The XSD started like this: <xs:schema id="Ecommerce" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns:mstns="http://tempuri.org/Ecommerce.xsd" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <xs:element name="eur"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="sec" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1"/> </xs:sequence> etc Here’s a sample document sent from client to service: <eur xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T17:16:34.523" version="1.1"> <sec guid="BFBACB3C-4C17-4786-ACCF-96BFDBF32DA5" company_name="Company" version="1.1"> <data /> </sec> </eur> Then, I had to give the service a targetNamespace. Actually I don’t know if I “had” to set it, but I added (to the same VS project) some code to act as a client to a completely unrelated service (which also had no namespace), and the project would not build until I gave my service a namespace. Now the XSD starts like this: <xs:schema id="Ecommerce" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns:mstns="http://tempuri.org/Ecommerce.xsd" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" targetNamespace="http://www.company.com/ecommerce" xmlns:ecom="http://www. company.com/ecommerce"> <xs:element name="eur"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="ecom:sec" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" /> </xs:sequence> etc As you can see above I also updated all the xs:element ref attributes to give them the “ecom” prefix. Now the project builds again. I found the client needed some modification after this. The client uses a SQL stored procedure to generate the XML. This is then de-serialised into an object of the correct type for the service’s “get_data” method. The object’s type used to be “eur” but after updating the web reference to the service, it became “get_dataEur”. And sure enough the parent element in the XML had to be changed to “get_dataEur” to be accepted. Then bizarrely I also had to put the xmlns attribute containing my namespace on the “sec” element (the immediate child of the parent element) rather than the parent element. Here’s a sample document now sent from client to service: <get_dataEur xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T18:23:20.653" version="1.1"> <sec xmlns="http://www.company.com/ecommerce" guid="BFBACB3C-4C17-4786-ACCF-96BFDBF32DA5" company_name="Company" version="1.1"> <data /> </sec> </get_dataEur> If in the service’s get_data method I then serialize the incoming object I see this (the parent element is “eur” and the xmlns attribute is on the parent element): <eur xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://www.company.com/ecommerce" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T18:23:20.653" version="1.1"> <sec guid="BFBACB3C-4C17-4786-ACCF-96BFDBF32DA5" company_name="Company" version="1.1"> <data /> </sec> </eur> The service then prepares a reply to go back to the client. The client does not see any data – all it sees is the parent element with nothing inside it. • Caching view-port based Geo-queries

  I have a web app with a giant Google Map in it. As users pan and zoom around on the map, points are dynamically loaded through AJAX call which include the viewport bounds (NE and SW corner coordinates) and some other assorted parameters. How do I cache these request for points? The problem is that the parameters are highly variable and (worst) not discrete i.e. floats with a lots of decimal places. I'm using ASP.NET-MVC/C#/LINQ2SQL/SQL-Server but the problem is not tied to that platform. • Debugger does not break when debugging PowerShell console

  I'm developing a binary PowerShell module. I have a post build event that copies that module into the 'modules' directory in my "Documents\WindowsPowerShell" folder. I then have the project set to launch PowerShell.exe. My module is loaded via Import-Module and off I go. The problem is my break points are never hit and the debugger does not break on exceptions. If I run PowerShell outside of Visual Studio and then attach the debugger to the process I can break just fine. The other strange this is that my break points are not empty. Typically if different source versions are loaded they will be. I'm running Visual Studio 2010 on a Win 7 box. My module is currently targeting .NET 3.5. I've tried running both the x64 and x86 versions of PS with no luck.

• VS C++ throwing divide by zero exception after a specific check

  In the following C++ code, it should be impossible for ain integer division by zero to occur: // gradedUnits and totalGrades are both of type int if (gradedUnits == 0) { return 0; } else { return totalGrades/gradedUnits; //call stack points to this line } however Visual Studio is popping up this error: Unhandled exception at 0x001712c0 in DSA_asgn1.exe: 0xC0000094: Integer division by zero. And the stack trace points to the line indicated in the code. It seems like VS might just do this with any integer division, without checking whether a divide by zero is possible. Do I need to catch this exception even though the code should never be able to throw it? If so, what's the best way to go about this? This is for an assignment that specifies VS 2005/2008 with C++. I would prefer not to make things more complicated than I need to, but at the same time I like to do things properly where possible.

• What is the equivalent to Java's canvas object in C#?

  I'm working on creating a basic application that will let a user draw (using a series of points) and I plan to do something with these points. If this were Java, I think I would probably use a canvas object and some Java2D calls to draw what I want. All the tutorials I've read on C#/Drawing involve writing your own paint method and adding it to the paint event for the form. However, I'm interested in having some traditional Form controls as well and I don't want to be drawing over them. So, is there a "Canvas" object where I can constrain what I'm drawing on? Also, is WinForms a poor choice given this use case? Would WPF have more features that would help enable me to do what I want? Or Silverlight?

• VS development on FDCC compliant Workstation

  Hi, I have a FDCC compliant workstation with FIPS 140-1 (Level 1) enabled. Now, i cannot run/debug any VS 2005/2008 applications on my machine I get the following error message on my browser Parser Error Message: This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms. the Error points to line no 1 of default.aspx.cs file using system; The only way to successfully debug/run my application is to set the following registry key to 0 HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\fipsalgorithmpolicy I understand that there are some Cryptographic algorithms that are not FIPS compliant on XP SP2 but i am not using cryptography at all. For that matter, the solution contains just default.aspx page with default code in .cs file, and even that fails to run. So my question is why the webpage fails to load, and why the error points to line #1 "using System;" statement? My next question is how can i develop on FIPS compliant locked down maching where i do not have edit rights on registry Thanks kudlur

  Hi, I'd like to paint some Bezier curves with the alpha channel that is changing during the curve painting. Right now I'm able to draw bezier paths, with a fixed alpha channel. What I'd like to do is to draw a single bezier curve that uses a certain value of the alpha channel for the first n points of the path another, alpha value for the subsequent m points and so on. The code I'm using for drawing bezier path is: CGContextSetStrokeColorWithColor(context, curva.color.CGColor); .... • Can Log4net have multiple appenders write to the same file?

  I'm using a RollingFileAppender to log some info to a file with a conversionPattern (in the web.config) that looks like this for the header of each log section: <conversionPattern value="%date - %property{userId} - %property{method}%newline--------------------------------%newline%message%newline%newline"/> I'd like to log details under this header as bullet points. I'm currently trying to use another RollingFileAppender that logs to the same file with a simple conversionPattern of just a dash, like this: <conversionPattern value="- %message%newline"/> But these messages aren't making it into the log file. I'm using Log.Info() for the header and Log.Debug() for the bullet points and filtering each appender on their respective log levels. Is what I'm trying to do possible? Or is there a better way to get header and detail information into a log file from log4net?

• Batch update records in Grails

  I have to calculate a "total" for each user based on individual actions -- that is, a User hasMany Actions and each Action has a point. So I need to basically get a sum of all the points on all the actions. Actions are added and subtracted regularly. Since this can be a rather heavy operation, it's not feasible that I execute the "total" each time I need it. Therefore, I am thinking of running the operation once a day for each user and storing the total points on the User as an int. Because I have thousands of users, I am trying to figure out the best way to do this. Should I basically iterate through all the users and call User.save() each time, or is there some kind of batch update mechanism I can use in Grails / GORM?

  Hi Guyz, i want to integrate maps using map kit in iphone, and i am successful at that, but now the problem which i am facing is i have 2 locations coordinates, Location1 and Location2, now i want those two points to be shown on map but i want that they appear on the screen both at 1 time, means if they are very far then the zoom level goes to that point and show those two points on the map, if they are near to each other then zoom level shows from that angel (i mean very near). now i know that using longitude delta and latitude delta i can fix this problem, but i cant find a way to make it dynamic, so that i dont have to hardcode the delta value Any Help appreciated.   Project a cubic bezier p1,p2,p3,p4 onto the line p1,p4. When p2 or p3 does not project onto the line segment between p1 and p4, the curve will bulge out from the anchor points. Is there a way to calculate the T value where the tangent of the curve is perpendicular to the anchor line? This could also be stated as finding the T values where the projected curve is farthest from the center of the line segment p1,p4. When p2 and p3 project onto the line segment, then the solutions are 0 and 1 respectively. Is there an equation for solving the more interesting case? The T value seems to depend only on the distance of the mapped control points from the anchor line segment. I can determine the value by refining guesses, but I am hoping there is a better way.

  I have three consecutive points of polygon, say p1,p2,p3. Now I wanted to know whether the orthogonal between p1 and p3 is inside the polygon or outside the polygon. I am doing it by taking three vectors v1,v2 and v3. And the point before the point p1 in polygon say p0. v1 = (p0 - p1) v2 = (p2 - p1) v3 = (p3 - p1) With reference to this question, I am using the method shown in the accepted answer of that question. It is only for counterclockwise. What if my points are clockwise. I am also knowing my whole polygon is clockwise or counterclockwise. And accordingly I select the vectors v1 and v2. But still I am getting some problem. I am showing one case where I am getting problem. This polygon is counterclockwise. and It is starting from the origin of v1 and v2.

• Matlab wont extract first row & column because of matrix dimensions !

  Hey guys, I am tracking an object that is thrown in air, and this object governs a parabolic pattern. Im tracking the object through a series of 30 images. I managed to exclude all the background and keep the object apparent, then used its centroid to get its coordinates and plot them. Now im supposed to predict where the object is going to fall, so I used polyfit & polyval .. the problem is, matlab says ??? Index exceeds matrix dimensions. Now the centroid creates its own structure with a row and 2 columns. Everytime the object moves in the loop, it updates the first row only .. Here is part of the code : For N=1:30 . . . x=centroid(1,1); % extract first row and column for x y=centroid(1,2); % extract secnd row and column for x plot_xy=plot(x,y) set(plot_xy,'XData',x(1:N),'YData',y(1:N)); fitting=polyfit(x(1:N),y(1:N),2); parabola=plot(x,nan(23,1)); evaluate=polyval(fitting,x); set(parabola,'YData',evaluate) . . end The error message I get is ??? Index exceeds matrix dimensions. It seems that (1:N) is causing the problems .. I honestly do not know why .. But when I remove N, the object is plotted along with its points, but polyfitting wont work, it gives me an error saying : Warning: Polynomial is not unique; degree >= number of data points. > In polyfit at 72 If I made it (1:N-1) or something, it plots more points before it starts giving me the same error (not unique ...) .   Background information: - There are nearly 7000 individuals and there is data about their performances in one, two or three tests. Every individual has taken the 1st test (let's call it Test M). Some of those who have taken Test M have also taken Test I, and some of those who have taken Test I have also taken Test B. For the first two tests (M and I), students can score grades I, II, or III. Depending on the grades they are awarded points -- 3 for grade I, 2 for II, 1 for III. The last Test B is just a pass or a fail result with no grades. Those passing this test get 1 point, with no points for failure. (Well actually, grades are awarded, but all grades are given a common 1 point). An amateur has entered data to represent these students and their grades in an Excel file. Problem is, this person has done the worst thing possible - he has developed his own notation and entered all test information in a single cell --- and made my life hell. The file originally had two text columns, one for individual's id, and the second for test info, if one could call it that. It's horrible, I know, and I am suffering. In the image, if you see "M-II-2 I-III-1" it means the person got grade II in Test M for 2 points and grade III in Test I for 1 point. Some have taken only one test, some two, and some three. When the file came to me for processing and analyzing the performance of students, I sent it back with instructions to insert 3 additional columns with only the grades for the three tests. The file now looks as follows. Columns C and D represent grades I, II, and III using 1,2 and 3 respectively. Column C is for Test M, column D for Test I. Column E says BA (B Achieved!) if the individual has passed Test B. Now that you have the above information, let's get to the problem. I don't trust this and want to check whether data in column B matches with data in columns C,D and E. That is, I want to examine the string in column B and find out whether the figures in columns C,D and E are correct. All help is really appreciated. P.S. - I had exported this to MySQL via ODBC and that is why you are seeing those NULLs. I tried doing this in MySQL too, and really will accept a MySQL or an Excel solution, I don't have a preference. Edit : - See file with sample data

• How do I draw an ESB on a SoaML diagram?

  I've recently had to draw some architectural diagrams that feature the use of an Enterprise Service Bus. The ESB is critical, so everyone wants it to show up on the diagram. But since it's the center of what everything is connected to, it really of gets in the way. I settled on trying to use SoaML. I color-coded the request points blue and service points green, to help then stand out. The text names on the ports give you a sense of what talks to what, and it's incredibly obvious that everything goes through the ESB. Can anyone comment on my approach? Any suggestions on something better?

• C# ASP.Net The type or namespace name 'iAnywhere' could not be found

  Morning all, I know that this sounds like a simple referencing problem from the title this is becoming a nightmare! I have a code class that uses the "iAnywhere.Data.AsaClient.dll". This Dll is referenced in the project and in the code class I have added this dll in the Using section. Everything seems fine at build with no errors at all but when I go to run the application it comes up with the following Compilation Error: Compiler Error Message: CS0246: The type or namespace name 'iAnywhere' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) The line that the Error points to this line in the class: using iAnywhere.Data.AsaClient; I have set the dll to copy local and it makes no difference, the Dll is installed on my PC so is in the GAC, I use this Dll with many other C# projects and have no problems. I have scoured Google looking for an answer and haven't found anything that points me to an answer to my problem. Any help would be brilliant!
