• Web service occasionally slows down significantly

  My company is running into a problem with a web service that is written in C#/ASP.Net. The service receives an identity key for data in SQL Server and a path to generate and save a PDF report for this data. In most cases, this web service returns results to the calling web pages very quickly, usually within a few seconds max. However, it seems to occasionally hit a significant slowdown. The web application calling the web service will generate a timeout error when this slowdown occurs. We have checked and the PDF does get created and saved to the server, so it looks like the web service eventually finishes executing. It seems to take about 1 to 2 minutes for processing to have completed. The PDF is generated using ActiveReports from Data Dynamics. Wwhen this problem occurs, making a small change to the web service's config file (ie, adding a blank space to a connection string line) seems to restart the web service and everything is perfectly ok for a period of time afterwards. Other web applications that are running on the same web server do not seem to experience this type of behavior, only this particular web service. I have added the code for the web service below. It is basic calls to 3rd party libraries. We are not able to recreate this problem in test. I am wondering what might be causing this issue? • C++ MySQL++ Delete query statement brain killer question

  Hello all, I'm relatively new to the MySQL++ connector in C++, and have an really annoying issue with it already! I've managed to get stored procedures working, however i'm having issues with the delete statements. I've looked high and low and have found no documentation with examples. First I thought maybe the code needs to free the query/connection results after calling the stored procedure, but of course MySQL++ doesn't have a free_result method... or does it?   I need to run overnight automation testing using RFT and IE on Windows7 virtual machine. I found that restarting the Windows box before the testing starts helps. I am moving the production environment from Windows XP to Windows 7. RFT used to complain when running RFT scripts that CRFCN0557E: Activation failed when running under a Terminal Services environment. This may be caused by using a minimized terminal window - try playing back without minimizing the terminal window (it does not need to be full-screen). Running tscon.exe 0 /dest:console prior starting any RFT script fix the error on Windows XP. But not on Windows7. I did some research and was trying for hours to fix that but nothing helped. There is no screen saver turned on on Windows7. I tried to run both but nothing helped. tscon.exe 0 /dest:console tscon.exe 1 /dest:console On Windows7 tscon returns {ErrorPrintf(): LoadString failed, Error 15105, (0x00003B01)} Error [15105]:The resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry. Error [0]:The operation completed successfully. On Windows XP tscon returns Could not connect sessionID 0 to sessionname console, Error code 7045 Error [7045]:The requested session access is denied. I just double checked that running tscon.exe 0 /dest:console on Windows XP solves the issue. Cannot understand the output of the tscon command then. Any idea how I can run RFT scripts after I restart the Windows box automatically? Preferably without involving any other computer. I was even thinking to use the old Windows XP to make remote desktop session to make RFT happy. I hope there is other better solution to that.

• How does Microsoft Word And Excel Run without any installation?

  I was having a discussion on bookmarks in Word with a friend, and he suggested me to check out his implementation of a query in Word. Since I did not have Microsoft Word installed, I told him I don't have Word so I won't be able to test it. To this, he mentioned that he'll send the executables and it will work - I argued that without an installation this will fail. I was rather shocked when he sent me the standalone executables and on running them, Word actually launched and I was able to use almost every functionality o_0 How's this possible? I've never installed Microsoft Office on my system, this isn't any "portable" app or VMWare ThinStall ( thanks nhinkle, didn't know about this). There are absolutely no Microsoft Office related files - except for winword.exe and excel.exe. Curiously even Microsoft Excel works fine with just the standalone executable. winword.exe size is about 38 MB, and excel.exe size is just 35kb, which makes it even more strange.   I would like to set up an alias in my cygwin .bashrc that translates pathnames unix-to-dos and passes them to windows gvim in a new tab of an existing instance. I am trying to use Luc Hermitte's cyg-wrapper script for running native win32 applications from Cygwin as per this vim tip. Luc's example of how to use his script is: alias vi= 'cyg-wrapper.sh "C:/Progra~1/Edition/vim/vim63/gvim.exe" --binary-opt=-c,--cmd,-T,-t,--servername,--remote-send,--remote-expr' I do not understand this example because most of these vim parameters (-c,--cmd,--servername,--remote-send,--remote-expr, etc) require more information, and I have not found any example of how to supply the additional information to cyg-wrapper.sh. For example, calling C:/Progra~1/Edition/vim/vim63/gvim.exe --servername=GVIM --remote-tab-silent file1 & will open file1 in a new tab of existing (or non existing) instance GVIM, but calling gvim --servername accomplishes nothing on its own. Unfortunately, though, the corresponding cyg-wrapper phrase does not work: cyg-wrapper.sh "C:/Progra~1/Edition/vim/vim63/gvim.exe" --binary-opt=--servername=GVIM,--remote-tab-silent --fork=2 file1 If ran twice, this actually opens up two instances of gvim; it is as if the servername 'GVIM' is being stripped and ignored. How do you supply a servername to gvim --servername or a .vimrc to gvim -u using cyg-wrapper.sh? Furthermore, why is it that programs must be passed to cyg-wrapper.sh in the relatively obscure "mixed form?" For example, if I try cyg-wrapper.sh "/cygdrive/c/path/to/GVimPortable.exe" --binary-opt=--servername=GVIM,--remote-tab-silent --fork=2 I get "Invalid switch - "/cygdrive"."   I am using VirtualBox 4.1.18 and had a virtual machine running Windows 8 RC with a single VHD, which was initially sized at 25GB (too small!). • Installer not being updated ( probably because of Windows 7 file cache )

  I'm creating an installer for my Visual FoxPro application using ISTool and Inno Setup. It is ok for me for the first time. But, I updated my code and re-built the EXE file. Then, compiled the installer again. I found that my update was not compiled into the installer and I did not see the update in my running application. I noticed that the EXE file, which was built by VFP, was updated properly. It seems the installation script did not output the updated file. But, when I changed folder names, it did work. I don't want to change folder names whenever I run that installation script. It is not a good idea actually. I think it is because of Windows 7 cache system. Mine is Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. For example, My previous output file is located at C:\path\to\myinstaller.exe When I compile the installation script, the output file there should be overwritten, but it was not as expected. Although I deleted the file, it did not work. When I changed to output file path as C:\newpath\to\myinstaller.exe, I got the fix, but it is not a solution what I'm looking for. Does anyone how to do that? [Edit] I found that the installed directory was not updated properly. For example, I installed the program to C:\Program files\MyInstalledApp When I run the installer again, that installation directory should be overwritten, but failed. Thus, I got to uninstall the app before I re-install it. Is there any fix for this?

• MS SQL Server 2005 Express rebuild master DB problem

  Hi ! There has been a power loss on our server and i cannot start the SQL service because the master DB is corrupted (as the log states). I found many articles recommending running the setup.exe with optional parameters: This is what I did: I've downloaded SQLEXPR32.EXE from MS page and ran it The first problem was, that it extracted all the setup files and started the default installation procedure. (which was unuseful for me as I need those params). If I canceled it, all the extracted files disappeared. That's why I decided to copy the extracted files somewhere and than cancel the default installation. Now I'm trying to run the setup.exe from the extraction: setup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1 SAPWD=xxxxx it asks me if I want to rewrite the system db, which is what I need, but then while installing I get this error: *An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'SqlRun_SQL.msi'* Then it tries to install something and it states: cannot install because the same instance name already exists. But I don't want to install a new instance .. Any idea how to solve this, please? Thank you in advance !

• How to stop/kill a virtual machine that hangs in "Stopping" state?

  Hi, I have a virtual machine that constantly hangs in the “Stopping” state. I’ve red several posts suggesting killing the vmwp.exe process of the machine but I’ve never been able to kill this process neither from the Windows Task Manager nor from an administrative command prompt by using prockill /PID xxxx /F where xxxx was the process ID. The only result that I have is that my machine enters in “Stopping-Critical” state. Even worse, from that point (having a virtual machine hung at stopping) I am unable to manage (stop or start) any other virtual machine on the same host. The only “solution” in that case for me is to stop the Virtual Machine Management Service (vmms.exe) and to restart the physical host. Without first stopping the vmms.exe service my physical host also hangs during the restart. Moreover, there is no any error logged in the Event Viewer. I’ve found some other posts complaining about them problem. On all of them the only suggestion was to kill the vmwp.exe process, which obviously doesn’t work for them too. Can somebody help us with this, pls? Thanks

  After upgrading to Fedora 18, Synergy, the keyboard sharing system was blocked by default. I ended up adding a file to the config directory to be loaded in on boot. Would anyone be able to have a look at that and see if I missed something? • GnuPG Command Line - Verifying KeePass Signature

  I'm trying to verify the PGP Signature of the latest version of KeePass 2.14's setup file against this signature, but this is the output I receive: C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG>gpg.exe --verify C:\Users\User\Desktop\KeePass-2.14-Setup.exe gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found. gpg: the signature could not be verified. Please remember that the signature file (.sig or .asc) should be the first file given on the command line. C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG> I found this command here, but it made no mention about ".sig" or ".asc" files, so I figured I did something wrong. By reading (http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gnupg/gpgv.html#gpgv), I further tried the following: C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG>gpg.exe --pgpfile C:\Users\User\Desktop\KeePass-2.14-Setup.exe gpg: Invalid option "--pgpfile" C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG> As you can see, the results are quite obfuscating... I took a look at this on SuperUser (http://superuser.com/questions/16160/short-easy-to-understand-explanation-of-gpg-pgp-for-nontechnical-people - I couldn't use "a href" due to the built in spam filter that discriminates against users with < 10 rep; this is the same reason for the link above this link), but none of the links seemed to really address my question, at least not directly enough for me to get any idea on how to move forward on this. Can anybody here help me with the esoteric technicality of OpenPGP & the associated use of the GnuPG program? I've felt pretty dumb learning VBS, but this is beyond humiliating: it's absolutely debilitating and maiming whatever confidence I had with my IT skills (then again, I have no justification for making any boast either, as I have yet to get my A+ Cert, lol).

• Spotlight actually searching every file on "This Mac"

  I know of 2 ways to search for any file in your machine using Finder (some say it's Spotlight) and no Terminal. To prevent answers / comments about Terminal, I consider it either for scripting something or as last resource. It's not practical for lots of usages. For instance, if you want to find something to attach to a mail, or embed in iTunes or any other app, you can just drag n' drop one or many of them. Definitely not practical to do under Terminal. There are many cases of use for any, but the focus here is Graphical User Interface. Well, the 2 ways basically are: Press Cmd + Opt + Spacebar and type in your search. Press the + button, select "System files" and "are included". This is so far my preferred way, but I'm not sure it will go through every file. Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G and/or select just one folder. Type in your search and select the folder rather than "This Mac". This will bring files not shown in "This Mac" if you select a folder outside of the default scope. Thing is, none of those is really convenient or have the nice presentation from regular Spotlight, which you get from Cmd + Spacebar and just typing. And, as far as I've heard, the default behavior on Spotlight in Tiger was actually being able to find files anywhere. So, is there any way to make the process significantly simpler? Maybe some tweak, configuration or really good Spotlight alternative? I'd rather keep it simple and tweak Spotlight.

  I am trying to close a handle to a locked file in Windows, using Sysinternals Handle software (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896655). However, whichever number I enter, it does not do anything. I have tried both: 1144, 2E8, 3A8 and 1144 in hex (478) as the software help says it accepts PID in hexademic. I cannot run the entire calling script in elevated mode due to restrictions from other pieces of functionality. I am looking for any ideas on how to add this output to my log as I am running out of options that are within the scope of basic scripts.

• I have added a port to the public zone in firewalld but still can't access the port

  I've been using iptables for a long time, but have never used firewalld until recently. I have enabled port 3000 TCP via firewalld with the following command: # firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-port=3000/tcp --permanent However I can't access the server on port 3000. From an external box: telnet 178.62.16.244 3000 Trying 178.62.16.244... telnet: connect to address 178.62.16.244: Connection refused There are no routing issues: I have a separate rule for a port forward from port 80 to port 8000 which works fine externally. • Certain Japanese characters aren't displayed properly

  On the following site: http://www.nciku.com/search/radical the first 2 characters on the second row of the "Step 2" table aren't displayed properly. All other characters look fine. I tried re-installing the Asian fonts via the checkboxes regarding Asian fonts in the "Regional and Language Options" control panel applet. I have tried removing every single Font from the Fonts folder (some were ofcourse not possible to remove), and re-installing them all again. I did this by... Running cmd Closing down the explorer process In cmd; using the command DEL /F /S /Q * in the Fonts folder Putting in my XP SP3 Retail disc In cmd; using expand -r *.tt_ in the I386 folder on the XP disc (and any other font file, in the I386\LANG folder) I also tried installing this pack from Microsoft, but this solved nothing either. I even tried running my browser (Firefox) through AppLocale. And changing character encoding -- again, does not help. I've also tried viewing the page in Internet Explorer. What could be wrong? I have checked my Fonts folder, to make sure that every single font available on the XP disc is available in WINDOWS\Fonts. What shows in the first square on the second row - I can't really tell what it's supposed to look like (but it's not the proper character)... but the second square shows a rectangular symbol containing HEX code. I've been in this situation before -- and it has been when I've been missing fonts. But how could I possibly be missing a necessary font? Shouldn't it be provided in the Asian "font packages"? I've talked to some other users that has viewed the page, and they had no problems displaying those characters on second row - even though they're only using the fonts provided on the Windows installation disc. • How to fix IE starting when I try to start Opera?

The Opera versions I have installed are 9.64, 10.10, and 10.63. My OS is Windows Vista with the latest critical/important updates. The behaviour is the same regardless of whether I double-click a shortcut to Opera, double-click on Opera.exe in one of the install directories, or run Opera.exe with the full path from Start-Run. The only work-around I've found is to right-click Opera.exe or a shortcut, and click "Run as administrator". This starts Opera, and it appears to work normally. Opera seems to be the only program so affected. I've checked Firefox and a few other (non-browser) programs, and they work normally. When IE starts instead of Opera, there are always two instances of iexplore.exe started, and they both crash before I can do anything else. IE also crashes if I try to start it from its own shortcut, but I don't know if that only started today, since I hadn't used IE for a few weeks. Does anyone know what might cause this and how to fix it? It's possible my PC has a virus, but BitDefender (for which I have automatic updates enabled) hasn't detected anything.

• PHP / SSH2 Multi-threading

  I'm basically done using SSH2 with PHP. Some may already that while using it, the PHP code actually waits for all the listed commands to be executed in SSH and when everything is done, it then gives back the results. Where that is fine for the work I am doing, but I need some commands to be multi-threaded. $cmd= MyCommand; echo $ssh-exec($cmd); So I just want this to run in parallel 2 times. I googled some stuff but didn't get along with it. For a basic thing, I came across to this way posted by someone but it didn't work out for me. for ($i = 0; $i < 2; $i += 1) { exec("php test_1.php $i > test.txt &"); //this will execute test_1.php and will leave this process executing in the background and will go to next iteration of the loop immediately without waiting the completion of the script in the test_1.php , $i is passed as argument . } I tried to put it this way exec("echo $ssh-exec($cmd) $i test.txt &"); in the loop but either it never entered the loop or the echo $ssh-exec failed. I don't really need a very neat multi-threading. Even a single second delay would do good, thank you.

• How do I get ftype & assoc to match Windows Explorer?

  I changed the association to use upon launching a .py file, via Windows Explorer: Tools - Folders - File types. Then browse to .py. Change the association to Wordpad. Now when I type the name of a py file in the command line, Wordpad opens it. But assoc and ftype in the command line still return the following: C:\> assoc .py .py = Python.File C:\> ftype Python.File Python.File = "C:\Program\Python27\python.exe" "%1" %* How come the association is working, but assoc and ftype are not aware of it? I did restart the prompt. More info from my registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.py = Python.File HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.py\Application = wordpad.exe HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.py\OpenWithProgids\Python.File = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.py\(Standard) = Python.File More registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\python.exe\shell\open\command\(Standard) = "C:\Program\Python27\python.exe" "%1" %*` I suppose this is what is showing up in ftype Python.File. But it does not seem to get used. (I am doing this for testing, so I can eventually choose my default version of Python easily).

• TEMP environment variable occasionally set incorrectly

  Occasionally, I find my TEMP and TMP environment variables set to C:\Windows\TEMP. They should be set to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp, and are configured correctly in System Properties. This manifests itself as error messages like the following: ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS2001: Source file 'C:\Windows\TEMP\gb_pz65v.0.cs' could not be found error CS2008: No inputs specified ...which occurs in various .NET applications (in particular Visual Studio 2010 or SQL Server Management Studio). Alternatively, SQL Server Management Studio will report: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: viewInfo (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlStudio.Explorer) If I run PowerShell elevated, then $env:TEMP is set correctly. If I run PowerShell non-elevated, then it's not. I believe that it should be set correctly in both cases. If not, it's the wrong way round. The same is true for CMD.EXE. Rebooting fixes it, temporarily, until something breaks it again. Presumably something loaded into Explorer.exe is messing with its environment variables, but what? The values in the registry are correct, even while this is happening: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment has TEMP = %SYSTEMROOT%\Temp HKCU\Environment has TEMP = %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp By setting a breakpoint on shell32!RegenerateUserEnvironment, I'm able to trap it when it happens, but I still don't know why explorer.exe is reading the wrong environment variables. I can reproduce it consistently by broadcasting a WM_SETTINGCHANGE message (I wrote a one-line C++ program to do this). Watching the activity in Process Monitor shows that explorer.exe doesn't even look at HKCU\Environment. What is going on?
