• Best way to backup Active Directory with a single domain controller

  I have a domain with about 15 users and a single Windows Server 2008 domain controller. Some recent issues with my RAID controller have made me reconsider how I go about securing the AD data. Currently I run a System State Backup nightly. However, it seems that it is impossible (or at least difficult and unsupported) to restore that to any other machine than the one from which it was taken. Adding a second DC to the domain seems expensive and overkill for such a small network. Is there no other way to backup the AD data?

  This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday hosted by Jes Schultz Borland. Earlier today, I was presenting a 45-minute session at the Community College about “The Beginning SQL Server Database”. One of the students asked me the following question. What is the difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)? I found this question from the student very interesting. He seems to have read the documentation (Book Online) and was then asking me this question. I always carry laptop which has SQL Server installed. I quickly opened it and ran the following script. After looking at the result, I think it was clear to everybody. Here is the script: SELECT COUNT([Title]) Value FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(ALL [Title]) ALLValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT [Title]) DistinctValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO The above script will give me the following results. You can clearly notice from the result set that COUNT (ALL ColumnName) is the same as COUNT(ColumnName). The reality is that the “ALL” is actually  the default option and it needs not to be specified. The ALL keyword includes all the non-NULL values.   MVC3 project can be run within Expression web and Visual studio as opened like a website not a project. they work same even if you open blogengine.net project in VS they take a time when you have more theme but expression web debug them in a second. well because theme design not matter for code. Expression web is a good because they save time for compile the code. even changes we make a little in design nothing in backend code.   i found a little difference between Casini and VS development server that if image putted in wrong way like <img src=”//img.png”/> instead of <img src=”/img.png”/> the error we make // instead of / that’s not worked in Expression web or Visual studio debugging but in Cassini it’s work fine.   Well i found that debug Blogengine.net in Expression web is a great thing because in VS they take a time like a minute to debug when you trying to debug first time. Expression Web save a time when we design themes within them and that’s much good option because web is also maked for design.   Well if you want to debug application faster then use casini but Expression web debugging is a good option when they take a long time to debug in Visual studio and EW debug them in a seconds.

• FULL LIST Difference Edubuntu over Ubuntu

  I have always used Edubuntu rather than Ubuntu because I have many children including home educated ones who casually use the education offerings. I appreciate many but not all of the extra offerings. I never got beyond 8.04.4 LTS, so am considering updating. I note now with Edubuntu 12.04 it is 2GB i.e.4 times bigger, even apparently using squashfs. I do now have to consider whether the extra resources are worth it in each computer in my household. I am sick of reading over and over again 'Edubuntu is Unbuntu with extras such as blah blah', and in a different place the same thing but with a different blah blah. I downloaded Edubuntu 12.04 and ran it 'live'. Can't say I got on at all with the Unity Interface (this can be changed when installed), but the apparent education stuff seemed quite small and pathetic, I am obviously not finding it. Is there anywhere a FULL LIST of what Edubuntu has pre-installed has over Ubuntu, so a sensible decision can be made whether to go for it, or just add packages that look relevant to me to Ubuntu. Is there truly no other difference between Unbuntu/Edubuntu but the extra educational packages? (I for example have no school server, but if I understood exactly what is involved, with the number of computers in the house, it may be worth creating one!) Please advise. Thank You.

• SMO ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout setting is ignored

  I am successfully using Powershell with SMO to backup most databases. However, I have several large databases in which I receive a "timeout" error "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired". The timout consistently occurs at 10 minutes. I have tried setting ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout to 0, 6000, and to [System.Int32]::MaxValue. The setting made no difference. I have found a number of Google references which indicate setting it to 0 makes it unlimited. No matter what I try, the timeouts consistently occur at 10 minutes. I even set Remote Query Timeout on the server to 0 (via Studio Manager) to no avail. Below is my SMO connection where I set the time out and the actual backup function. Further below is the output from my script. UPDATE Interestingly enough, I wrote the backup function in C# using VS 2008 and the timeout override does work within that environment. I am in the process of incorporating that C# process into my Powershell Script until I can find out why the timeout override does not work with just Powershell. • How can I keep gnu screen from becoming unresponsive after losing my SSH connection?

  I use a VPN tunnel to connect to my work network and then SSH to connect to my work PC running cygwin. Once logged in I can attach to a screen session and everything works great. Now, after a while, I walk away from my computer and sooner or later, the VPN tunnel times out. The SSH connection on each end eventually times out and then I eventually come back to my computer to do some work. Theoretically, this should be a simple matter of just restarting the VPN, reconnecting via SSH, and then running "screen -r -d". However apparently when the sshd daemon times out on the cygwin PC, it leaves the screen session in some kind of hung state. I can reproduce a similar hung state by clicking the close box on a cygwin bash shell window while it's running a screen session. Is there any way to get the screen session to recover once this has happened, so that I don't lose anything?

  I restored OSX 10.6.2 today (was 10.6.3 and not booting) by copying the system over from a backup. The data directories were not touched. I am seeing some files as 0 bytes, and getting permission-denied errors when copying, even when using sudo cp or the Finder itself. Some programs, differently, take the files at face value and see no permission problems (such as zip), but they see the files as zero bytes, which would be game-over for recovery. cp: .git/objects/fe/86b676974a44aa7f128a55bf27670f4a1073ca: could not copy extended attributes to /eraseme/blah/.git/objects/fe/86b676974a44aa7f128a55bf27670f4a1073ca: Operation not permitted I have tried sudo chown, sudo chmod -R 777 and sudo chflags -R nouchg which do not change the end result. Strangely, this is only affecting my .git directories (perhaps because they start with a period, but renaming them -- which works -- does not change anything). What else can I do to take ownership of these files? Edit: This question comes from StackOverflow because I originally thought it was a GIT problem. It's definitely not (just) GIT. Anyway, this is to help put some of the comments in context.

• How to restore broken Ethernet functionality on Mac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11 (Tiger)

  I had a disk error that rendered my Mac unbootable. I repaired it with Tech Tool 4, but now networking does not work. Network Preferences reports that my Ethernet cable is unplugged. I know this is bogus because when I boot from an emergency partition, networking works correctly. Furthermore, wireless networking is also broken, which I tested with a known-good Wi-Fi dongle. Whenever I try to change Network Port Configurations by creating a New or Renaming an existing one, example: I get this message in the console: Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! In sets of two as shown. When I try to invoke the Network Diagnostics app, it immediately crashes. My first thought is to reinstall Tiger with the Archive and Install method so I don't have to reinstall all my applications but I have lost my Tiger installer disk. My next thought is to buy Leopard for $107 on Amazon. If there is any way I can just repair my Tiger install I would be happy to save that money, though. This is not my main machine and I am loathe to put more money into it. How can I recover my network functionality? UPDATE: I found my Tiger install disk and tried an Archive and Install. It failed with an unhelpful error message along the lines of "Can't install, try again". I tried again but had the same error. My guess is, some corrupt or missing file in my User folder is preventing migration. I have a backup created with Super Duper that is a bit out of date but will startup the machine (with functional networking). I would love to just copy over the file(s) that got messed up but I don't even know where to look. What is the likely location of the System files that would cause the aforementioned symptoms?

• Can I still restore partition table?

  Once I was going to resize partitions on my Mac HD from Bootcamp. I changed my mind and was going to quit, but apparently I hit a button, which made every single mac partion dissapear, and windows 7 refused to restart and be reinstalled. The 1 TB large HD consists of 3 partions, I believe. Since I can't see their actual size (except bootcamp), this is how I recall it. Macintosh HD about 500GB (Somewhere around 700GB according to disk utillity, but 500 according to Finder, and 500GB was all I could access.) Lion Recovery disk Bootcamp 293.36 GB To fix this I connected my mac via target disk mode to a pc and ran TestDisk. However this is the results: Since I Don't have 10 reputation I cant post the image showing the testdisk results, so I post a link instead hoping it is ok. The two mac partitions' sizes are completely wrong, and BOOTCAMP isn't showing. I tested using disk utilities from the snow leopard dvd. There there is one 293.36 GB Mac OS Extended partition. Before I had the firewire cable for target disk mode I tried reinstalling windows. Without success I tried again formating BOOTCAMP. Was that a bad thing to do? Could it have overwritten data from Macintosh HD? Unfortunately I have no backup. I could bring it to some kind of computer repair firm though.

• Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 R2, and Registry Backups

  Hi folks! As a developer, I've installed various instances of SQL Sever (2000, 2005, 2008, R2) from all the ways back to 2003 and I've never had an install fail on me....until yesterday. I was installing SQL Server 2008 R2 onto a Windows Server 2008 R2 hosted virtual server and the install finished, but failed on every component. To make matters worse, it was in a state in which I could not uninstall it either, even using command line options! I dug around a bit, but didn't get very far with it. The error is enigmatic and Google didn't turn up much hope. So today, I am going to try again after having the VM image wiped overnight. My question is how can I guard against the same failure today? I don't mind if it fails, but then I know it may be something wrong with the base image I'm getting from the hosting company. I really don't feel like paying another $20 to wipe the VM and I have no idea why it failed. Is it enough for me to backup the registry so that I can restore it in case it fails? What about the installation files? Do I need to have a tool to clean that out, too? Sorry, I'm no sys admin so no real experience with backup/restore aside from System Restore! So any advice would be appreciated!

• Check if all files in a directory exists elsewhere

  I'm about to remove an old backup directory, but before doing so I'd like to make sure that all these files exist in a newer directory. Is there a tool for this? Or am I best off doing this "manually" using find, md5sum, sorting, comparing, etc? Clarification: If I have the following directory listings /path/to/old_backup/dir1/fileA /path/to/old_backup/dir1/fileB /path/to/old_backup/dir2/fileC and /path/to/new_backup/dir1/fileA /path/to/new_backup/dir2/fileB /path/to/new_backup/dir2/fileD then fileA and fileB exists in new_backup (fileA in its original directory, and fileB has moved from dir1 to dir2). fileC on the other hand is missing in new_backup and fileD has been created. In this situation I'd like the output to be something like fileC exists in old_backup, but not in new_backup.

  I'm trying to restore my deja-dup backup from a certain date. However during restore after selecting the date to restore from i get a "restoring... "preparing"..." window that just seems stuck there doing nothing forever (past 1/2 hour). There was a point when i was prompted for the "encryption password" but i don't remember it, so i just entered one. I never got any error if the password i entered was not accepted.

I heard that WorldCenter might have to do with the center of gravity or something. Second, When I create a Box2D Body for a sprite the Body is always at the lower left corner. I check it by printing a Rectangle of 1 pixel around the box.getWorldCenter(). From what I understand the Body should be in the center of the Sprite and its bounding box should wrap around the Sprite, correct? • buagent process has been consuming 100% cpu for two days

  The buagent process has been using 100% of cpu since two days ago. I want to terminate this process but I don't know if it's something dangerous or not (I am not much advanced in working with linux, indeed I am very beginner). The only thing that I know is that this process is probably restoring some files. But I think it is not normal for that to take more than two days. Now, do you think it would be OK if I kill this process? What command could I use to do that? I appreciate any help :) p.s. We are hosting a few web sites there. This server is also our Name Server and Mail Server as well. A couple of months a go we had a problem with the server which made us to take a full-backup of all files and then reinstall linux. Yesterday, I selected one of the directories on the backup server and restored that directory to a tmp directory on our linux server. After that, I couldn't restore any other directory because every time I want to do that, it says that there is another restore job running and I have to wait for that. When I use the "top" command I can see that the buagent process is consuming 100% of cpu. So I guess that is the problem. I don't know why it has been taking too long to execute.

• Did Windows 7 Startup Repair trash My Documents?

  Earlier today, I rebooted my computer. Partway through the boot process, it shut down suddenly. When I tried again, I was prompted to run Startup Repair, and I did. Afterwards, my computer booted normally and everything seemed to be in order. Then I noticed that my My Documents folder contains a mix of old and new files. On closer inspection, it appears that Windows has reverted my system to a previous state. Two things puzzle me: 1) According to Microsoft, "System Restore does not affect personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos [...]", yet many of my personal files have been affected. 2) Why were some things reverted, but not others? I had recently reorganized a bunch of files in My Documents. The reverted directory structure seems to be a hybrid of old a new, with a lot of new stuff missing. It's hard to say for sure, but it looks like the stuff that's missing would have been in conflict (two folders with the same name, for example), and Windows favored the old stuff. Is this normal behavior for Startup Repair/System Restore? To modify personal files, I mean? Is there a pattern to the mess it's made of My Documents?

  Is it possible to export skype chat history into some readable plain-text format? (txt, xml, html) Alternatively, is it possible to backup/restore skype chat history? (I wouldn't mind backup to Gmail, or to readable plain-text format).   Hi. While improving my (personal) backup system, I noticed, that I cannot copy certain locked files, like the windows registry files. Is there a way to copy such things? Or a specific solution for the registry (I know of the regedit-File-Export ,,solution'' but this is to text format and seems slow). AFAIK, On Linux the locking system is advisory and on Windows it is mandatory. Can I somehow bypass the mandatory-ness for backup purposes etc.? TIA.

  Let's say I have a daily maintainance task that: Backups all databases and then removes backups that are older than 3 days. Now let's say the first backup at day 1, starting at 10:00, results in the following files db1.bak 2012-01-01 10:04 db2.bak 2012-01-01 10:06 Now let's say at day 4 the first step of the maintainance task (backup the DBs) happens to finish at 10:05. Will SQL Server delete db1.bak and keep db2.bak (would be logical, but might be surprising for the user) or keep both or remove both?
