• Why Java as a First Language?

  Why is Java so popular as a first language to teach beginners? To me it seems like a terrible choice: It's statically typed. Static typing isn't useful unless you care a lot about either performance or scaling to large projects. It requires tons of boilerplate to get the simplest code up and running. Try explaining "Hello, world" to someone who's never programmed before. It only handles the middle levels of abstraction well and is single-paradigm, thus leaving out a lot of important concepts. You can't program at a very low level (pointers, manual memory management) or a very high level, (metaprogramming, macros) in it. In general, Java's biggest strength (i.e. the reason people use it despite the shortcomings of the language per se) is its libraries and tool support, which is probably the least important attribute for a beginner language. In fact, while useful in the real world these may negatives from a pedagogical perspective as they can discourage learning to write code from scratch.

  Recently I had reason to be very glad that I had Fiddler. I was able to record some web service traffic and identify a problem as Fiddler can record both the call to a web service and response from the web service. By seeing the actual data traffic I was able to resolve a problem found in testing in less time than it has taken me to write this blog entry!   How can I upload files to server using JSP/Servlet? I tried this: <form action="upload" method="post"> <input type="text" name="description" /> <input type="file" name="file" /> <input type="submit" /> </form> However, I only get the file name, not the file content. When I add enctype="multipart/form-data" to the <form>, then request.getParameter() returns null. During research I stumbled upon Apache Common FileUpload. • Learning Java with a simple project

  As i remember the time when i was learning PHP, it was suggested to build a simple blog or a forum after reading the language fundamentals. I was told/read that this would cover everything that I would need to learn about PHP from a beginners book. This advice was out there in a number of places, and after following and working with PHP it seems quite good advice. Now, i am learning Java and reading the book "Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel. I wonder if there is any such set of similar, small projects that I could take up, that would cover all the essentials and most of what is covered in the book.

• Should developers be involved in testing phases?

  Hi, we are using a classical V-shaped development process. We then have requirements, architecture, design, implementation, integration tests, system tests and acceptance. Testers are preparing test cases during the first phases of the project. The issue is that, due to resources issues (*), test phases are too long and are often shortened due to time constraints (you know project managers... ;)). So my question is simple: should developers be involved in the tests phases and isn't it too 'dangerous'. I'm afraid it will give the project managers a false feeling of better quality as the work has been done but would the added man.days be of any value? I'm not really confident of developers doing tests (no offense here but we all know it's quite hard to break in a few clicks what you have made in severals days). Thanks for sharing your thoughts. (*) For obscure reasons, increasing the number of testers is not an option as of today. (Just upfront, it's not a duplicate of Should programmers help testers in designing tests? which talks about test preparation and not test execution, where we avoid the implication of developers)

• I'm a beginner Java programmer but I want to be useful

  Programming has always interested me, but after learning some of the basics of Java(I'm talking high school level), I don't really know what to do from there. I want to be able to apply what I learned in some way, whether it be a volunteer project or something, but I probably don't know enough programming. Is it possible for a novice Java programmer to be useful in some way whatsoever. I want to do this because I feel like I could learn more about programming by helping people in theirs, but I'm not sure if I'm even able to this though. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can contribute to other people's project in some way or how to apply it in some way?

• Java on Ubuntu server 12.04?

  I'm a little confused at the moment. My back story in short, is that I'm trying to set up a Minecraft server on an Ubuntu server I've recently set up, obviously to do this I needed Java, but after googling for a short while I wasn't entirely sure whether it is possible (or legal?) to do so in Ubuntu 12.04 due to licensing type issues - so I installed open JDK instead which appears not to work properly with the Minecraft server software (I half expected this) I'm now considering uninstalling open JDK and instead trying to get proper Java on there instead, my question is, is this possible? Is it Legal? And if so how do I go about doing it? Because I'm finding it very difficult to find any instructions on how to do so for 12.04 . . .

  I am consuming an external C# Web Service method which returns a simple calculation result object like this: [Serializable] public class CalculationResult { public string Name { get; set; } public string Unit { get; set; } public decimal? Value { get; set; } } When I add a Web Reference to this service in my ASP .NET project Visual Studio is kind enough to generate a matching class so I can easily consume and work with it. I am using Castle Windsor and I may want to plug in other method of getting a calculation result object, so I want a common class CalculationResult (or ICalculationResult) in my solution which all my objects can work with, this will always match the object returned from the external Web Service 1:1. Is there anyway I can tell my Web Service client to hydrate a particular class instead of its generated one?   this is my first question I've posted. I've used this site to look at other questions to help with similar problems I've had. After some cursory looking I couldn't find quite the answer I was looking for so I decided to finally succumb and create an account. I am fairly new to java, only a few weeks into my first class. Anyway, my project is to create a program which takes any amount of students and their grades, and then assign them a letter grade. The catch is, however, that it is on a sort of curve and the other grades' letter are dependent on the the highest. Anything equal to or 10 points below the best grade is an a, anything 11-20 points below is a b, and so on. I am to use an array, but I get this error when ran "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException." I will go ahead and post my code down below. • What Java class should I use to represent a Vector?

  Does Java have a built-in Vector class suitable for handling collision detection / response? It should have methods like subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... It seems logical to use java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? I understand collision detection; I'm only wondering what approach to it is idiomatic in Java. I'm new to the language and to application development in general.

So my university is offering an extensive Java Oracle course for 7 days (like 5-6 hours a day) for a really decent price, do you think as an electrical engineer this would help me in my future career? What are the benefits of learning Java for an electrical engineer of my specialization? Do you think it's a good idea for someone in my case to take such an extensive course? I'm hardworker and I really enjoy these things, so I don't think that would be a problem for me.

  One of the problems web apps have against native apps, especially on the mobile front, is the constant need to re-download each web page on request. Ultimately, this leads to slower performance. Why if web apps only download new pages if they're actually needed, not because they're simply requested. For example: perhaps the server can store a web page version in a cookie. Every slight change to the page on the server-side changes the version number. Now instead of the browser requesting a new page each time, why not just check the version number and have the server send the page if they're different? If the page similar, the user can just use a cached page. I'm sure browsers doesn't necessarily have to change to accommodate changes to this, correct?

  I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it? I'm just trying to run the basic DynamoDB example that connects to the database and adds a new table and row

  I got into Minecraft 2 months ago and just today I switched to Ubuntu. I downloaded Java from the special script (http://www.duinsoft.nl/packages.php?t=en) and after I verified it said it was installed. So I downloaded the Minecraft.jar file and ran it through the Java runtime. It updated like the launcher should... ... And it froze. Went black, didn't even get to the Mojang screen. Please help me! Minecraft is my favorite game and I can't stand to lose it.

But in my team we are facing a concrete problem: We have a business layer offering a service called "createObject", this service makes a lot of operation which can result to problem. E.g: parentObjectDontExist, objectAlreadyExist, dontHaveAuthorizationToCreate, operationFailed... and we want the UI using this service to display different information messages depending which error occurred. In old java dev, we should have create all signed exception type and throw it in createObject. As Clean code says, it is forbidden to use Exception for business logic AND signed exceptions are evil... Why not...But i don't know how to solved this problem and i don't want to use return code. For example, the logging sybsystem: Option 1: All in one package, named to sort nicely Log - static accessor LogMonitor - interface for log minotor LogMonitorBase - abstract class LogMonitorStdout - print log to console LogWriter - interface for file logger LogWriterSimple - log writer with just one log file LogWriterArchiving - log writer that handles old log files Option 2: Subpackages for Monitors and Writers, with better names Log monitors/LogMonitor monitors/BaseMonitor monitors/StdoutMonitor writers/LogWriter writers/SimpleLog writers/ArchivingLog The second maybe looks better, but perhaps it's not so practical from the java point of view (two extra packages). What do you suggest as the best practice here? A lot in one package, grouped by naming prefixes, or a lot of subpackages with better names?

First, though, I have to become comfortable with those technologies in my spare time, so that I can create a proof-of-concept. Right now, I'm still a Maven newbie. Is there a set of best practices for creating Java EE web apps with Maven? For example, I could create a project with a basic archetype and then add all of the necessary JARs by putting dependencies in the POM for the servlet container, EJB, EclipseLink, etc... That might work, but it might not be the best way to do it. I'd greatly appreciate any guidance that you could provide on this topic. Thank you very much!

• Should I use XNA (C#) or Java to create a basic game engine?

  My project is to design and build a game engine (in just about 3 months). I've been looking at two options for this game engine, either make it with XNA (and C#) or Java. My experience with XNA/C# is zero to none, however I have been a Java programmer for around 4 years. I've had a little play around with both but I am still not sure what would be best to use (i.e. what would turn out better with my experience). XNA is obviously for making games and I would presume making a game engine would be slightly easier in this - however that said, there are numerous libraries available in Java that could be used for a game engine (such as lwjgl). What would be my best option and ideally produce the best results out of both XNA or Java? For your information, the game engine at the moment is a 2D one and is not too advanced (although I plan to extend it in the future). Thanks in advance for all answers!

  When I tried searching this I would just get things on equality. When I was reading through some documentation for navigation in Android I had come across something I had never seen before. I came across this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle(); It almost looks like something you can do in JavaScript where you can take the first not-null variable and assign it to a variable. In JavaScript I would do this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle || getTitle(); And it would return the first not null, in Java, is this double equals usage the equivalent in Java? What is this type of expression called?
