  • Database permissions and ORMs

    I've been using .NET's Entity Framework a lot lately and have absolutely no wish to go back to using Stored Procedures. Been shocked though that the company I'm building this project for had a policy where applications were only given accounts that only had permissions to access stored procedures! Apparently, they believe that there's a security risk involved in allowing applications to access the tables/views directly. I don't get this. My first question is, can someone enlighten me as to what kind of security risk applications having direct access to the database may pose? AND If that's the case, are there any other ORM solutions that can provide a workaround to this (I can't think of any logical possibility atm) that would allow me to circumvent the restrictions on the user account to be assigned to me? OR is my understanding that I'd need direct permissions for the tables and views wrong?

  • Django: request object to template context transparancy

    Hi! I want to include an initialized data structure in my request object, making it accessible in the context object from my templates. What I'm doing right now is passing it manually and tiresome within all my views: render_to_response(...., ( {'menu': RequestContext(request)})) The request object contains the key,value pair which is injected using a custom context processor. While this works, I had hoped there was a more generic way of passing selected parts of the request object to the template context. I've tried passing it by generic views, but as it turns out the request object isn't instantiated when parsing the urlpatterns list.

  • How to imitate the workflow view of Automator?

    I’m starting to develop my first full-blown Cocoa application containing a view which I would like to behave (and look) similar to Automator’s AMWorkflowView. The basic features I’d like to achieve: Positioning of subviews Display of subviews in expanded / collapsed states Multiple selection Drag and drop In order to get accustomed to Cocoa, I started with a custom NSView which mainly served as a container for the custom subviews and handled their positioning and multiple selection. The subviews are also subclasses of NSView, and contain a variable amount of views themselves, like buttons, labels and popup menus, and therefore can have different heights. This worked quite well, but before going on, I want to make sure to have everything neat and tidy according to the MVC pattern. I suspect that there already is a class in Cocoa that facilitates the implementation of a view container, like maybe NSCollectionView. It seems that there is no (easy) way to display differently sized views in an NSCollectionView, though. Should I continue implementing my custom NSView (probably using an NSArrayController for selection and sorting support), or are there better ways to go? Any help is much appreciated

  • Re-ordering a collection of UIView's based on their CGPoint

    Hi all, I have a NSMutableArray that holds a collection of UIViewControllers Amongst other properties and methods an instance of each of the viewControllers are placed in a parent view The user will place these objects individually when desired to. So essentially I use - (void)addSubview:(UIView *)view when a new view is added to the parent view controller. Because the UI is isometric it's made things a tad more complicated What I am trying to do is re-order the views based on their co-ordinate position, so items higher up the parent UIView frame is indexed lower then views lower in the parent UIview frame. And items that are on the left side of the view are positioned at a higher index to those on the right I think the solution may have to do with re-ordering the NSMutableArray but how can I compare the CGpoints? Do I need to compare the x and y separately?

  • Multiple Rails forks with separate designs and layouts

    I have a Rails project that is basically a simple web app for a membership-based organization. We've open sourced the code on Github for the web app so that others can use it, but have a licensed design/layout that the original organization is going to use. This layout cannot be open sourced. I was wondering if others have run into the situation where you have an open-source Rails app with a non-OS design. My initial thought is to put app/views in .gitignore, and to have anyone forking the code add their own views directory, perhaps including an app/views_default directory with a web-app-theme layout or something else to get people running. Is this the best option (realizing that there are other files such as JavaScript, CSS, etc that come with the layout that must also be ignored). Does anyone have some good thoughts or pointers on this?

  • iPhone: How do I override the back button in a Navigation Controller?

    Hello, In my app I have a basic Navigation Controller. For all of my views, except one, the controller works as it should. However, for one view in particular, I would like the 'back' button to not go back to the previous view, but to go to one I set. In particular it is going to go back 2 views and skip over one. After doing some research I found that I can intercept the view when it disappears, so I tried to put in code to have it navigate to the page I would like: - (void)viewWillDisappear:(BOOL)animated { [super viewWillDisappear:animated]; //i set a flag to know that the back button was pressed if (viewPushed) { viewPushed = NO; } else { // Here, you know that back button was pressed mainMenu *mainViewController = [[mainMenu alloc] initWithNibName:@"mainMenu" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:mainViewController animated:YES]; [mainViewController release]; } } That didn't work, so does anyone have any ideas?   • Play! Framework - Can my view template be localised when rendering it as an AsyncResult?

    I've recently started using the Play! framework (v2.0.4) for writing a Java web application. In the majority of my controllers I'm following the paradigm of suspending the HTTP request until the promise of a web service response has been fulfilled. Once the promise has been fulfilled, I return an AsyncResult. But it seems that the HTTP request is inaccessible from the async method. I can see a couple of (unsatisfactory) ways to work around this: Go back to the 'one thread per request' paradigm and have threads block waiting for responses. Figure out which language to use at Controller level, and feed that choice into my template. I also suspect this might not be an issue on trunk. I know that there is a similar issue in 2.0.4 with regards to not being able to access or modify the Session object which has recently been fixed. However I'm stuck on 2.0.4 for the time being, so is there a better way that I can resolve this problem?

    Hello, I had inserted two jQuery tabs on my site. One div container had the id - tabs and another had the id tabs-for-views. Both of them were working fine till sometime ago, until i made some changes. I don't remember what the exact changes were.. Right now, the first tab uses the jQuery UI theme I am using. As in, I can see the tab navigation and content panels - but on clicking the tabs nothing happens. But the second (tabs-for-views) is not even converted to proper tabs format.   • Fallback to another existing MIME type when the required is missing in Rails

    I want to extend the existing supported HTML type of my site by support for iPhone. For this I registered a new MIME type. I created a layout for iphone and also converted some of the html views to iphone version. However, I did not convert all of the html.erb files. I do not see the reason to convert all views, some of them should not change, some partials simply just remain the same. I guess there should be a solution for this case. I tried to search for ways how to fallback to an existing format, but did not find any answer. Does a way to define fallback for MIME types in Rails exist? How does it work? If it doesn't exist and thus I wanted to solve the issue not the right way, what could simply solve the task of extending an existing site by another format? Thanks for your suggestions.

    Hi, all I have a TabActivity with several tabs. Each tab corresponds to a specific view, and those views may further switch to other views. For example, one of my tabs displays RSS feed list, after user clicks one of the RSS feed, it will switch to a view displaying a list of articles, and after user clicks one of the titles, a full article view will be displayed. I'm going to add support for "back" button in my application. For instance, in a full article view, after user presses the "back" button, it should switch back to the article list view. And if user presses it the "back" button again, my application should switch back to the feed list view. My idea is to maintain a Stack<View> during navigation, and every time user presses the "back" button, the program will pop a View out of the stack, and set it as the current view. But I would like to know how to set current view in TabHost. Many thanks.

Up until now, I have been doing this inside of my views but it's getting fairly hard to maintain since I have a fair number of views now. I assume this is the kind of thing middleware is good for, a check that will happen every single page load. What I need it to do is so: Check if the user is logged in If they are, check if they have any messages Store the result so I can reference the information in my templates Has anyone ever had to write any middleware like this? I've never used middleware before so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It has urlpatterns=patterns('haystack.views', url(r'^$', SearchView(), name='haystack_search'),) I thought the second argument of url() should be callable object. I looked at the views.py and SearchView is a class. What is going on here? What's get called eventually?

  • Android: how to update UI dynamically?

    I have an Android app and I need to change UI dynamically: ex: when user presses a button, I want to change the current activity's views and, as in some cases there are a lot of views involved, I need to display a ProgressDialog. I have been using an AsyncTask, but I think that it is not the best solution, because AsyncTask's doInBackground runs a different thread, so I can't update UI from there - I have to use runOnUiThread, which runs the code in the UI Thread, but freezes the progress dialog that is shown. I guess there should be more people with similar issues, as updating UI while displaying a ProgressDialog seems to be something done regularly by applications. So does anyone have a solution to this?

  • What's the correct way to represent a linear process in CocoaTouch (UIKit)?

    I need to represent a linear process (think wizard) in an iPad app. In principle I could use a UINavigationController and just keep pushing new controllers for each step of the process. But this seems rather inefficient since the process I'm modeling has no notion of navigating backwards so all previous views would pointlessly stay around and use up resources. At the moment I keep adding and removing a subview to one "master" viewcontroller and basically swapping out the contents. This works but feels rather clunky and I hope there is some nicer way to achieve this. Additionally there needs to be an animated transition between the views. (I have this working at the moment via beginAnimations / commitAnimations)

    Hey guys, I'm in the process of designing a set of views that use the same model in my app, the difference is that some views will differ in Read Only and Modifiable fields. So for example for view A I want to be able to modify A.One but no A.Two properties and for view B I want to have B.One and B.Two as modifiable fields. I was thinking in having a map that will hold this information and iterate both the modifiable and non-modifiable lists in a generic view, but I was thinking that maybe I can get feedback from you guys.     Let's say I have a simple ASP.NET MVC site with two views. The views use the following routes: /Foo and /Foo/Bar. Now let's say I want to use the URL to specify (just for the sake of example) the background color of the site. I want my routes to be, for instance, /Blue/Foo or /Green/Foo/Bar. Also, if I call Html.ActionLink from a view, I want the Blue or Green value to propagate. So, e.g., if I call Html.ActionLink("Bar", "Foo") from /Blue/Foo, I want /Blue/Foo/Bar to come back. How best can I do this? (Forgive me if I'm missing an existing post. This is hard for me to articulate concisely, so I'm not quite sure what to search for.)
