• Micro Controller Serial Data identification or classification

  I have a x51 family micro controller (P89V51RD2). I'm going to send some data from computer using serial port. The data i'll be sending are Character 'S' Character 'R' and a 2 digit integer. Upon receiving the data, I will be calling separate functions. I used if(chr=='S') and elseif(chr=='R')for character data. The main problem lies with identifying the 2 digit number sent. Any other data other than the above three mentioned will be discarded. Any ideas for identifying two digit integer ??

• Java generic Interface performance

  Simple question, but tricky answer I guess. Does using Generic Interfaces hurts performance? Example: public interface Stuff<T> { void hello(T var); } vs public interface Stuff { void hello(Integer var); <---- Integer used just as an example } My first thought is that it doesn't. Generics are just part of the language and the compiler will optimize it as though there were no generics (at least in this particular case of generic interfaces). Is this correct?

• VB.NET 2008 Application crashing during Do Loop

  I am writing an application to compare each item on listbox1 to all items on listbox2. If the item is found, then remove it from both lists. The goal is to only have the items that were not found remain on both lists. The problem is, the application just hangs and I never get any results. I looked at my code several times and I cannot figure out what's going on (programming noob I know...). Can anybody help me with this?   I have one Map that contains some names and numbers Map<String,Integer> abc = new TreeMap<String,Integer>(); It works fine. I can put some values in it but when I call it in different class it gives me wrong order. For example: I putted abc.put("a",1); abc.put("b",5); abc.put("c",3); some time it returns the order (b,a,c) and some time (a,c,b). What is wrong with it? Is there any step that I am missing when I call this map?

  I'm attempting to call LinkedIn's API and store Network Updates. Each update has a Unix timestamp that I'm retrieving as a string variable from the REST XML response. I want to convert the string timestamp to a mysql datetime format. The date() function accepts an integer as the second argument for time to be converted. However, I'm on Windows 32 bit PHP and the integer type for this platform is limited to 2147483647. $timestamp = '1293714626675'; // sample pulled from linkedin $timestamp = (int) $timestamp; // timestamp now equals 2147483647 $mysqlDatetime = date('Y-m-d H:i:s', $timestamp); // produces incorrect time Is there a better method of creating the mysql datetime in PHP? I realize that I can convert it upon insert into MySQL however, that would require changing other dependent code.

  I have a calls called DtaDate that stores an integer "key", a string name, a string for the date, and a Date object that is created from that string. I have some code that needs to accept a date-like object. I'd like the user to be able to pass in anything date like - a Date object which I'll extract the information from, another DtaDate, a string with the date in it, or even the key, which I'll use to look up the DtaDate from a collection. So I have this: Friend Sub New(NameIn As String, DateFormulaIn As String, Optional FromDateIn As Object = Nothing) [stuff that works] [check that we got a FromDateIn...] If TypeOf FromDateIn Is DtaDate Then fdk = FromDateIn.Key Ans.FromDate = fdk VB tells me that "Option Strict On disallows late binding". The other cases, where a string or integer is the TypeOf, I use CInt or CStr. But this is the first time I've actually run into a case where the casting is a non-base type. What's the trick?

• Ensuring uniqueness on a varchar greater than 255 in MYSQL/InnoDB

  I have a table which contains HTML entries for news pages. When I initially designed it I used URL as the primary key. I've learned the error of my ways because left-joining is super slow. So I want to redesign the table with an integer (id) primary key, but still keep the rows unique based on the URL. The problem is that I've found URLs longer than 255 characters, and MySQL isn't letting my create a key on the URL. I'm using an InnoDB/UTF8 table. From what I understand it's using multiple bytes per character with a limit of 766 bytes for the key (in InnoDB). I would really love suggestions on an elegant way of keeping the rows unique based on URL, while using an integer primary key. Thanks!

  Hello all! I have a Flex GUI where I have to place quadrate elements. The position of these elements need to be stored into a database. So I can create two integer fields in the db table x and y. Also I need an angle, because the user can rotate these elements, so I can also make a int (int is okay, I do not need a double value therefore). As a ORM, I use Hibernate. But the question is, if creating three integer fields is the best way to handle this. Perhaps someone can tell me if this will be okay or if there are better ways?   Hello, i have some issue with database. Okay, i have two models - Page and Item. Page for displaying some content. Item - this is item discription. So, i work on small ecommerce shop. Okay, all of this models can have some comments. So, this is my Comments model at this moment: Comments - string : id text : body integer : page_id integer : item_id So when some one add comment to page - page_id will be filled with current Page id. And if some one add comment to item - item_id will be filled. Okay, i know what the best way is to create STI or Polymorphic assoc, but does i really need this way for my situation?   My file contains a series of numbers (integer, float, integer, float ....), each written on a separate line. The numbers of columns are different from one line to another i.e. 1 2.45 3 1.75 5 3.45 7 2.55 9 3.25 6 1.75 4 3.55 6 2.55 9 2.45 The program should read the contents of the entire file and place the data into an array of type float with an entry for each line.   Just 20 minutes age when I answered a question, I come up with an interesting scenario that I'm not sure of the behavior: Let me have an integer array of size n, pointed by intPtr; int* intPtr; and let me also have a struct like this: typedef struct { int val1; int val2; //and less or more integer declarations goes on like this(not any other type) }intStruct; My question is if I do a cast intStruct* structPtr = (intStruct*) intPtr; Am I sure to get every element correctly if I traverse the elements of the struct? Is there any possibility of miss-alignment(possible because of padding) in any architecture/compiler?

  If we have the following 2 snippets of code in c++ that do the same task: int a, b=somenumber; while(b > 0) { a = b % 3; b /= 3; } or int b=somenumber; while(b > 0) { int a=b%3; b /= 3; } I don't know much about computer architecture/c++ design, but i think that the first code is faster because it declares the integer a at the beginning and just uses it in the while-loop, and in the second code the integer a is being declared everytime the while-loop starts over. Can some one help me with this, am i correct or what and why ?

  I'm trying to use an integer as the numerical representation of a string, for example, storing "ABCD" as 0x41424344. However, when it comes to output, I've got to convert the integer back into 4 ASCII characters. Right now, I'm using bit shifts and masking, as follows: int value = 0x41424344; string s = new string ( new char [] { (char)(value >> 24), (char)(value >> 16 & 0xFF), (char)(value >> 8 & 0xFF), (char)(value & 0xFF) }); Is there a cleaner way to do this? I've tried various casts, but the compiler, as expected, complained about it.

  i need a dropdownlist to show current month and year (January 2010) till January 2011, and an additional record of January 2011 +.   If I have a hash map and iterate over the objects repeatedly, is it correct that I'm not guaranteed the same order for every call? For example, could the following print two lines that differ from each other: Map<String,Integer> map = new HashMap<String,Integer>() {{ put("a", 1); put("b", 2); put("c", 3); }}; System.out.println(map); System.out.println(map); And is this the case for sets and collections in general? If so, what's the best way in case you have to iterate twice over the same collection in the same order (regardless of what order that is)? I guess converting to a list.

• Python: What's a correct and good way to implement __hash__()?

  What's a correct and good way to implement hash()? I am talking about the function that returns a hashcode that is then used to insert objects into hashtables aka dictionaries. As hash() returns an integer and is used for "binning" objects into hashtables I assume that the values of the returned integer should be uniformly distributed for common data (to minimize collisions). What's a good practice to get such values? Are collisions a problem? In my case I have a small class which acts as a container class holding some ints, some floats and a string.

• Problems with sys.stdout.write() with time.sleep() in a function
