  I am currently learning python in preperation for a class over the summer and have gotten started by implementing different types of heaps and priority based data structures. I began to write a unit test suite for the project but ran into difficulties into creating a generic unit test that only tests the interface and is oblivious of the actual implementation. • Building a J2EE dev/test setup on a single PC

  It's been a while since I did Java work, and even then I was never responsible for starting a large project from the very start... there were test/staging/production systems already running, etc, etc. Now I am looking to start a J2EE project from scratch on my trusty workstation, which has never been used for Java development and runs Windows 7 64bit. First of all, I'll be getting Eclipse. As far as writing the code goes I'm pretty happy. And running it through Eclipse is OK, but what I'd really want is to have a VM running MySQL and TomCat on which I can properly deploy my project and run/debug it 'remotely' from my dev PC. And I guess this should be done using Ant instead of letting Eclipse build the WAR for me, so that I don't end up with a dependence on Eclipse. I'm certain Eclipse can do this, so you hit a button and it runs Ant scripts, deploys and debugs for instance, but very hazy on it. Are there any good guides on this? I don't want to be taught Java, or even Ant, but rather the 'glue' parts like getting my test VM up and running under Windows, getting a build/test/deploy/run pipeline running through Eclipse, etc. One point, I only plan to use Windows... hosting a Windows VM on my Windwos desktop. And while I can use command-line tools like ant/svn, I'm much more a GUI person who loves IDE integration... I'd rather this didn't end up an argument about Linux or Vi, etc! I am looking for free, but am a MAPS subscriber, and run Win7 Ultimate in case that makes a difference as far as free VM solutions.

• fastest way to check to see if a certain index in a linq statement is null

  Basic Details I have a linq statement that grabs some records from a database and puts them in a System.Linq.Enumerable: var someRecords = someRepoAttachedToDatabase.Where(p=>true); Suppose this grabs tons (25k+) of records, and i need to perform operations on all of them. to speed things up, I have to decided to use paging and perform the operations needed in blocks of 100 instead of all of the records at the same time. The Question The line in question is the line where I count the number of records in the subset to see if we are on the last page; if the number of records in subset is less than the size of paging - then that means there are no more records left. What I would like to know is what is the fastest way to do this? • NULL pointer dereference in swiotlb_unmap_sg_attrs() on disk IO

  I'm getting an error I really don't understand when reading or writing files using a PCIe block device driver. I seem to be hitting an issue in swiotlb_unmap_sg_attrs(), which appears to be doing a NULL dereference of the sg pointer, but I don't know where this is coming from, as the only scatterlist I use myself is allocated as part of the device info structure and persists as long as the driver does. There is a stacktrace to go with the problem. It tends to vary a bit in exact details, but it always crashes in swiotlb_unmap_sq_attrs(). I think it's likely I have a locking issue, as I am not sure how to handle the locks around the IO functions. The lock is already held when the request function is called, I release it before the IO functions themselves are called, as they need an (MSI) IRQ to complete. The IRQ handler updates a "status" value, which the IO function is waiting for. When the IO function returns, I then take the lock back up and return to request queue handling. The crash happens in blk_fetch_request() during the following: if (!__blk_end_request(req, res, bytes)){ printk(KERN_ERR "%s next request\n", DRIVER_NAME); req = blk_fetch_request(q); } else { printk(KERN_ERR "%s same request\n", DRIVER_NAME); } where bytes is updated by the request handler to be the total length of IO (summed length of each scatter-gather segment).

• Is it legal for a C++ reference to be NULL?

  A while back I ran into a bug the looked something like this: void fn(int &i) { printf(&i == NULL ? "NULL\n" : "!NULL\n"); } int main() { int i; int *ip = NULL; fn(i); // prints !NULL fn(*ip); // prints NULL return 0; } More recently, I ran into this comment about C++ references: [References arguments make] it clear, unlike with pointers, that NULL is not a possible value. But, as show above, NULL is a possible value. So where is the error? In the language spec? (Unlikely.) Is the compiler in error for allowing that? Is that coding guide in error (or a little ambiguous)? Or am I just wandering into the minefield known as undefined behavior?

• Visual studio 2008 unit test keeps failing

  I've create a method that calculates the harmonic mean based on a list of doubles. But when I'm running the test it keeps failing even thou the output result are the same. Expected:<2.32432293165495. Actual:<2.32432293165495. For me that are both the same values. Can somebody explain this? Or am I doing something wrong?

• JSplitPane overlaps JButtons in BorderLayout, but does not when layout is null

  So I'm having another issue..... I'm currently using a BorderLayout in my GUI so that when I resize my jframe, all of the internal components resize with it. I couldn't get any other layout to work with how I want the GUI to look while providing this resizing capability. At the top I have a JMenuBar, and below it I have a bunch of buttons. Below that I am supposed to have a JSplitPane, and it is there. However, the buttons seemed to be contained within the JSplitPane, which is not my intention. So when anything happens within the splitpane, the buttons disappear until I move my mouse over them again. When I set my layout to null everything works great except I lose the resizing capability, which is not good. Tried posting images but it wont let me since my rep isnt at 10 yet :( Any suggestions? I've tried putting the buttons into a JPanel then adding the jpanel but the splitpane overlaps with that. Same with a JToolBar. The order in which I add my items is: 1) the menu bar setJMenuBar(menuBar) 2) the buttons getContentPane().add(btnZoomIn) etc. 3) the split pane getContentPane().add(splitPane) then the rest of the things you see after that

After I get the error, some buttons do not go to its destination and instead it just does nothing.   I am new to WCF and created a simple REST service to accept an order object (series of strings from XML file), insert that data into a database, and then return an order object that contains the results. To test the service I created a small web project and send over a stream created from an xml doc. The problem is that even though all of the items in the xml doc get placed into the stream, the service is nullifying some of them when it receives the data. For example lineItemId will have a value but shipment status will show null. I step through the xml creation and verify that all the values are being sent. However, if I clear the datamembers and change the names around, it can work. Any help would be appreciated.   Ok so I'm working on an Eclipse plugin based on the JGraph example. The problem is I can't really get the "save" method to work, here's how the program works in short: - I have a DiagramEditor class with an init() method, where I create a GraphEditor object and call the createFrame() methord of that object. - GraphEditor extends the BasicGraphEditor (which extends JPanel), the createFrame() method returns a JFrame and has a line "frame.setJMenuBar(menuBar)" - the "menuBar" is an object variable, which is initialized in the BasicGraphEditor. Till here everything is cool, the problem is with the action listener which is supposed to save a file. To get the graph I need to get the GraphEditor component, so I do a Component component = (Component) e.getSource() whitch is the ActionEvent passed to that action listener and at that stage is the JMenuItem "save", then I get the parent which is the JPopupMenu, then I want to get that JPopupMenu's parent which should be the GraphEdiotor, but instead I get a null. • JPopupMenu getParent() returning a null?

  Ok so I'm working on an Eclipse plugin based on the JGraph example. The problem is I can't really get the "save" method to work, here's how the program works in short: - I have a DiagramEditor class with an init() method, where I create a GraphEditor object and call the createFrame() methord of that object. - GraphEditor extends the BasicGraphEditor (which extends JPanel), the createFrame() method returns a JFrame and has a line "frame.setJMenuBar(menuBar)" - the "menuBar" is an object variable, which is initialized in the BasicGraphEditor. Till here everything is cool, the problem is with the action listener which is supposed to save a file. To get the graph I need to get the GraphEditor component, so I do a Component component = (Component) e.getSource() whitch is the ActionEvent passed to that action listener and at that stage is the JMenuItem "save", then I get the parent which is the JPopupMenu, then I want to get that JPopupMenu's parent which should be the GraphEdiotor, but instead I get a null. Any idea why? • Issues accessing an object's array values - returns null or 0s

  The function below should return an array of objects with this structure: TopicFrequency = { name: "Chemistry", //This is dependent on topic data: [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12] //This would be real data }; so when I do this: myData = this.getChartData("line"); it should return two objects: {name : "Chemistry", data : [1,2,3,4,51,12,0,0, 2,1,41, 31]} {name : "Math", data : [0,0,41,4,51,12,0,0, 2,1,41, 90]} so when I do console.log(myData); it's perfect, returns exactly this. However when I do console.log(myData[0].data) it returns all 0s, not the values. I'm not sure what this issues is known as, and my question is simple what is this problem known as? Here is the full function. Somethings were hardcoded and other variables (notable server and queryContent) removed. Those parts worked fine, it is only when manipulated/retreiving the returned array's values that I run into problems. Ideally I would like to perform assertions on the message but right now I'd be happy if the test just ran! Thanks

• How do I run JUnit tests from inside my java application?

  Is it possible to run JUnit tests from inside my java application? Are there test frameworks I can use (such as JUnit.jar?), or am I force to find the test files, invoke the methods and track the exceptions myself? The reason why I am asking is my application requires a lot of work to start launch (lots of dependencies and configurations, etc) and using an external testing tool (like JUnit Ant task) would require a lot of work to set up. It is easier to start the application and then inside the application run my tests. Is there an easy test framework that runs tests and output results from inside a java application or am I forced to write my own framework?

• Joining on NULLs

  A problem I see on a fairly regular basis is that of dealing with NULL values.  Specifically here, where we are joining two tables on two columns, one of which is ‘optional’ ie is nullable.  So something like this: i.e. Lookup where all the columns are equal, even when NULL.   NULL’s are a tricky thing to initially wrap your mind around.  Statements like “NULL is not equal to NULL and neither is it not not equal to NULL, it’s NULL” can cause a serious brain freeze and leave you a gibbering wreck and needing your mummy. Before we plod on, time to setup some data to demo against. Create table #SourceTable ( Id integer not null, SubId integer null, AnotherCol char(255) not null ) go create unique clustered index idxSourceTable on #SourceTable(id,subID) go with cteNums as ( select top(1000) number from master..spt_values where type ='P' ) insert into #SourceTable select Num1.number,nullif(Num2.number,0),'SomeJunk' from cteNums num1 cross join cteNums num2 go Create table #LookupTable ( Id integer not null, SubID integer null ) go insert into #LookupTable Select top(100) id,subid from #SourceTable where subid is not null order by newid() go insert into #LookupTable Select top(3) id,subid from #SourceTable where subid is null order by newid() If that has run correctly, you will have 1 million rows in #SourceTable and 103 rows in #LookupTable.  We now want to join one to the other. First attempt – Lets just join select * from #SourceTable join #LookupTable on #LookupTable.id = #SourceTable.id and #LookupTable.SubID = #SourceTable.SubID OK, that’s a fail.  We had 100 rows back,  we didn’t correctly account for the 3 rows that have null values.  Remember NULL <> NULL and the join clause specifies SUBID=SUBID, which for those rows is not true. Second attempt – Lets deal with those pesky NULLS select * from #SourceTable join #LookupTable on #LookupTable.id = #SourceTable.id and isnull(#LookupTable.SubID,0) = isnull(#SourceTable.SubID,0) OK, that’s the right result, well done and 99.9% of the time that is where its left. It is a relatively trivial CPU overhead to wrap ISNULL around both columns and compare that result, so no problems.  But, although that’s true, this a relational database we are using here, not a procedural language.  SQL is a declarative language, we are making a request to the engine to get the results we want.  How we ask for them can make a ton of difference. Lets look at the plan for our second attempt, specifically the clustered index seek on the #SourceTable   There are 2 predicates. The ‘seek predicate’ and ‘predicate’.  The ‘seek predicate’ describes how SQLServer has been able to use an Index.  Here, it has been able to navigate the index to resolve where ID=ID.  So far so good, but what about the ‘predicate’ (aka residual probe) ? This is a row-by-row operation.  For each row found in the index matching the Seek Predicate, the leaf level nodes have been scanned and tested using this logical condition.  In this example [Expr1007] is the result of the IsNull operation on #LookupTable and that is tested for equality with the IsNull operation on #SourceTable.  This residual probe is quite a high overhead, if we can express our statement slightly differently to take full advantage of the index and make the test part of the ‘Seek Predicate’. Third attempt – X is null and Y is null So, lets state the query in a slightly manner: select * from #SourceTable join #LookupTable on #LookupTable.id = #SourceTable.id and ( #LookupTable.SubID = #SourceTable.SubID or (#LookupTable.SubID is null and #SourceTable.SubId is null) ) So its slightly wordier and may not be as clear in its intent to the human reader, that is what comments are for, but the key point is that it is now clearer to the query optimizer what our intention is. Let look at the plan for that query, again specifically the index seek operation on #SourceTable No ‘predicate’, just a ‘Seek Predicate’ against the index to resolve both ID and SubID.  A subtle difference that can be easily overlooked.  But has it made a difference to the performance ? Well, yes , a perhaps surprisingly high one. Clever query optimizer well done. If you are using a scalar function on a column, you a pretty much guaranteeing that a residual probe will be used.  By re-wording the query you may well be able to avoid this and use the index completely to resolve lookups. In-terms of performance and scalability your system will be in a much better position if you can.

What I am expecting is a table that looks like the following however I cannot seem to come up with the correct SQL. NAME AGE LENGTH STATUSID CATSOURCE ISSTRAY SOURCEID CATID Adam 1 25 null null null 1 2 Bill 5 1 null null null null null Charles 7 5 null null null null null Steve 12 15 1 1 1 1 1 In plain English what I am looking for is to return all known cats + their associated cat source + their cat status while retaining null values. The only information I will have is the source that I am curious about. I also only want the cats that have a status of either STRAY or UNKNOWN (null)

• How to make pytest display a custom string representation for fixture parameters?

  When using builtin types as fixture parameters, pytest prints out the value of the parameters in the test report. For example: @fixture(params=['hello', 'world'] def data(request): return request.param def test_something(data): pass Running this with py.test --verbose will print something like: test_example.py:7: test_something[hello] PASSED test_example.py:7: test_something[world] PASSED Note that the value of the parameter is printed in square brackets after the test name. Now, when using an object of a user-defined class as parameter, like so: class Param(object): def __init__(self, text): self.text = text @fixture(params=[Param('hello'), Param('world')] def data(request): return request.param def test_something(data): pass pytest will simply enumerate the number of values (p0, p1, etc.): test_example.py:7: test_something[p0] PASSED test_example.py:7: test_something[p1] PASSED This behavior does not change even when the user-defined class provides custom __str__ and __repr__ implementations. Is there any way to make pytest display something more useful than just p0 here? I am using pytest 2.5.2 on Python 2.7.6 on Windows 7.
