  • Visual Studio Exceptions dialogs

    - by Daniel Moth
    Previously I covered step 1 of live debugging with start and attach. Once the debugger is attached, you want to go to step 2 of live debugging, which is to break. One way to break under the debugger is to do nothing, and just wait for an exception to occur in your code. This is true for all types of code that you debug in Visual Studio, and let's consider the following piece of C# code:3: static void Main() 4: { 5: try 6: { 7: int i = 0; 8: int r = 5 / i; 9: } 10: catch (System.DivideByZeroException) {/*gulp. sue me.*/} 11: System.Console.ReadLine(); 12: } If you run this under the debugger do you expect an exception on line 8? It is a trick question: you have to know whether I have configured the debugger to break when exceptions are thrown (first-chance exceptions) or only when they are unhandled. The place you do that is in the Exceptions dialog which is accessible from the Debug->Exceptions menu and on my installation looks like this: Note that I have checked all CLR exceptions. I could have expanded (like shown for the C++ case in my screenshot) and selected specific exceptions. To read more about this dialog, please read the corresponding Exception Handling debugging msdn topic and all its subtopics. So, for the code above, the debugger will break execution due to the thrown exception (exactly as if the try..catch was not there), so I see the following Exception Thrown dialog: Note the following: I can hit continue (or hit break and then later continue) and the program will continue fine since I have a catch handler. If this was an unhandled exception, then that is what the dialog would say (instead of first chance exception) and continuing would crash the app. That hyperlinked text ("Open Exception Settings") opens the Exceptions dialog I described further up. The coolest thing to note is the checkbox - this is new in this latest release of Visual Studio: it is a shortcut to the checkbox in the Exceptions dialog, so you don't have to open it to change this setting for this specific exception - you can toggle that option right from this dialog. Finally, if you try the code above on your system, you may observe a couple of differences from my screenshots. The first is that you may have an additional column of checkboxes in the Exceptions dialog. The second is that the last dialog I shared may look different to you. It all depends on the Debug->Options settings, and the two relevant settings are in this screenshot: The Exception assistant is what configures the look of the UI when the debugger wants to indicate exception to you, and the Just My Code setting controls the extra column in the Exception dialog. You can read more about those options on MSDN: How to break on User-Unhandled exceptions (plus Gregg’s post) and Exception Assistant. Before I leave you to go play with this stuff a bit more, please note that this level of debugging is now available for JavaScript too, and if you are looking at the Exceptions dialog and wondering what the "GPU Memory Access Exceptions" node is about, stay tuned on the C++ AMP blog ;-) Comments about this post by Daniel Moth welcome at the original blog.

  • Hidden exceptions

    - by user12617285
    Occasionally you may find yourself in a Java application environment where exceptions in your code are being caught by the application framework and either silently swallowed or converted into a generic exception. Either way, the potentially useful details of your original exception are inaccessible. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a VM option that showed the stack trace for every exception thrown, whether or not it's caught? In fact, HotSpot includes such an option: -XX:+TraceExceptions. However, this option is only available in a debug build of HotSpot (search globals.hpp for TraceExceptions). And based on a quick skim of the HotSpot source code, this option only prints the exception class and message. A more useful capability would be to have the complete stack trace printed as well as the code location catching the exception. This is what the various TraceException* options in in Maxine do (and more). That said, there is a way to achieve a limited version of the same thing with a stock standard JVM. It involves the use of the -Xbootclasspath/p non-standard option. The trick is to modify the source of java.lang.Exception by inserting the following: private static final boolean logging = System.getProperty("TraceExceptions") != null; private void log() { if (logging && sun.misc.VM.isBooted()) { printStackTrace(); } } Then every constructor simply needs to be modified to call log() just before returning: public Exception(String message) { super(message); log(); } public Exception(String message, Throwable cause) { super(message, cause); log(); } // etc... You now need to compile the modified Exception.java source and prepend the resulting class to the boot class path as well as add -DTraceExceptions to your java command line. Here's a console session showing these steps: % mkdir boot % javac -d boot Exception.java % java -DTraceExceptions -Xbootclasspath/p:boot -cp com.oracle.max.vm/bin test.output.HelloWorld java.util.zip.ZipException: error in opening zip file at java.util.zip.ZipFile.open(Native Method) at java.util.zip.ZipFile.(ZipFile.java:127) at java.util.jar.JarFile.(JarFile.java:135) at java.util.jar.JarFile.(JarFile.java:72) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$JarLoader.getJarFile(URLClassPath.java:646) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$JarLoader.access$600(URLClassPath.java:540) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$JarLoader$1.run(URLClassPath.java:607) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$JarLoader.ensureOpen(URLClassPath.java:599) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$JarLoader.(URLClassPath.java:583) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$3.run(URLClassPath.java:333) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at sun.misc.URLClassPath.getLoader(URLClassPath.java:322) at sun.misc.URLClassPath.getLoader(URLClassPath.java:299) at sun.misc.URLClassPath.getResource(URLClassPath.java:168) at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:194) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:190) at sun.misc.Launcher$ExtClassLoader.findClass(Launcher.java:229) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:306) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:295) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:301) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:247) java.security.PrivilegedActionException at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$JarLoader.ensureOpen(URLClassPath.java:599) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$JarLoader.(URLClassPath.java:583) at sun.misc.URLClassPath$3.run(URLClassPath.java:333) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at sun.misc.URLClassPath.getLoader(URLClassPath.java:322) ... It's worth pointing out that this is not as useful as direct VM support for tracing exceptions. It has (at least) the following limitations: The trace is shown for every exception, whether it is thrown or not. It only applies to subclasses of java.lang.Exception as there appears to be bootstrap issues when the modification is applied to Throwable.java. It does not show you where the exception was caught. It involves overriding a class in rt.jar, something should never be done in a non-development environment.

  • Dont Throw Duplicate Exceptions

    In your code, youll sometimes have write code that validates input using a variety of checks.  Assuming you havent embraced AOP and done everything with attributes, its likely that your defensive coding is going to look something like this: public void Foo(SomeClass someArgument) { if(someArgument == null) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument"); } if(!someArgument.IsValid()) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument"); }   // Do Real Work } Do you see a problem here?  Heres the deal Exceptions should be meaningful.  They have value at a number of levels: In the code, throwing an exception lets the develop know that there is an unsupported condition here In calling code, different types of exceptions may be handled differently At runtime, logging of exceptions provides a valuable diagnostic tool Its this last reason I want to focus on.  If you find yourself literally throwing the exact exception in more than one location within a given method, stop.  The stack trace for such an exception is likely going to be identical regardless of which path of execution led to the exception being thrown.  When that happens, you or whomever is debugging the problem will have to guess which exception was thrown.  Guessing is a great way to introduce additional problems and/or greatly increase the amount of time require to properly diagnose and correct any bugs related to this behavior. Dont Guess Be Specific When throwing an exception from multiple code paths within the code, be specific.  Virtually ever exception allows a custom message use it and ensure each case is unique.  If the exception might be handled differently by the caller, than consider implementing a new custom exception type.  Also, dont automatically think that you can improve the code by collapsing the if-then logic into a single call with short-circuiting (e.g. if(x == null || !x.IsValid()) ) that will guarantee that you cant easily throw different information into the message as easily as constructing the exception separately in each case. The code above might be refactored like so:   public void Foo(SomeClass someArgument) { if(someArgument == null) { throw new ArgumentNullException("someArgument"); } if(!someArgument.IsValid()) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument"); }   // Do Real Work } In this case its taking advantage of the fact that there is already an ArgumentNullException in the framework, but if you didnt have an IsValid() method and were doing validation on your own, it might look like this: public void Foo(SomeClass someArgument) { if(someArgument.Quantity < 0) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument", "Quantity cannot be less than 0. Quantity: " + someArgument.Quantity); } if(someArgument.Quantity > 100) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument", "SomeArgument.Quantity cannot exceed 100. Quantity: " + someArgument.Quantity); }   // Do Real Work }   Note that in this last example, Im throwing the same exception type in each case, but with different Message values.  Im also making sure to include the value that resulted in the exception, as this can be extremely useful for debugging.  (How many times have you wished NullReferenceException would tell you the name of the variable it was trying to reference?) Dont add work to those who will follow after you to maintain your application (especially since its likely to be you).  Be specific with your exception messages follow DRY when throwing exceptions within a given method by throwing unique exceptions for each interesting case of invalid state. • Is it okay to call exception-triggered debugging "post-mortem debugging"?

    - by cool-RR
    I heard the term "post-mortem debugging", and Wikipedia says it's debugging done after the program has crashed. I often debug Python apps using a debugger that stops execution once an important-enough exception has been raised. Then I can use the debug probe to investigate. Does this count as "post-mortem debugging"? Because the program doesn't really crash. EDIT: If the answer is no, then what name would you use for the kind of debugging that I described?

  • How to avoid the exception “Substitution controls cannot be used in cached User Controls or cached M

    - by DigiMortal
    Recently I wrote example about using user controls with donut caching. Because cache substitutions are not allowed inside partially cached controls you may get the error Substitution controls cannot be used in cached User Controls or cached Master Pages when breaking this rule. In this posting I will introduce some strategies that help to avoid this error. How Substitution control checks its location? Substitution control uses the following check in its OnPreRender method. protected internal override void OnPreRender(EventArgs e) {     base.OnPreRender(e);     for (Control control = this.Parent; control != null;          control = control.Parent)     {         if (control is BasePartialCachingControl)         {             throw new HttpException(SR.GetString("Substitution_CannotBeInCachedControl"));         }     } } It traverses all the control tree up to top from its parent to find at least one control that is partially cached. If such control is found then exception is thrown. Reusing the functionality If you want to do something by yourself if your control may cause exception mentioned before you can use the same code. I modified the previously shown code to be method that can be easily moved to user controls base class if you have some. If you don’t you can use it in controls where you need this check. protected bool IsInsidePartialCachingControl() {     for (Control control = Parent; control != null;         control = control.Parent)         if (control is BasePartialCachingControl)             return true;       return false; } Now it is up to you how to handle the situation where your control with substitutions is child of some partially cache control. You can add here also some debug level output so you can see exactly what controls in control hierarchy are cached and cause problems.

And also, ECommerce.PMethod.Sql.SqlConns.Open() uses its own connection string, not the one loaded by spring, it's different module from diffrent team. And I am sure the connection string is correct. And, this ysod cames up randomly. Sometimes nothing is wrong, and sometimes, it appears. I thought there could be something wrong with my database or the network/firewall, I will check it later, but now I want understand this tricky stack trace.

    Like this post I am also trying to complete this heroku tutorial I have installed and used everything (node.js, npm, express) successfully until I got to Foreman. I installed Foreman by first installing Ruby: alex@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1 then installing Foreman. I am a newbie to Unix so I "sudo" perhaps unnecessarily here, but I got confirmation in the terminal that it had installed but also some errors: alex@ubuntu:~/NodeHelloWorld$ sudo gem install foreman Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/foreman-0.26.1.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-11-10 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/term-ansicolor-1.0.7.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-10-13 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/foreman-0.26.1.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-11-10 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/term-ansicolor-1.0.7.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-10-13 00:00:00.000000000Z" Successfully installed term-ansicolor-1.0.7 Successfully installed foreman-0.26.1 Then when I try to start foreman I get similar: alex@ubuntu:~/NodeHelloWorld$ foreman start Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/foreman-0.26.1.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-11-10 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/term-ansicolor-1.0.7.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-10-13 00:00:00.000000000Z" /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:926:in `report_activate_error': Could not find RubyGem foreman (>= 0) (Gem::LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:244:in `activate_dep' from /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:236:in `activate' from /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:1307:in `gem' from /usr/local/bin/foreman:18 Can anyone help me? I am a newbie to Unix after finally dumping windows as I found I could not get foreman-windows to work for me either I have found this post from someone with apparently the same issue. Does this mean my version of ruby could be wrong? I am running 1.9.1, though again new to ruby as well; alex@ubuntu:~/NodeHelloWorld$ ruby1.9.1 -v ruby 1.9.2p290 (2011-07-09 revision 32553) [i686-linux] Thanks

  • CLR 4.0: Corrupted State Exceptions

    - by Scott Dorman
    Corrupted state exceptions are designed to help you have fewer bugs in your code by making it harder to make common mistakes around exception handling. A very common pattern is code like this: public void FileSave(String name) { try { FileStream fs = new FileStream(name, FileMode.Create); } catch (Exception e) { MessageBox.Show("File Open Error"); throw new Exception(IOException); } The standard recommendation is not to catch System.Exception but rather catch the more specific exceptions (in this case, IOException). While this is a somewhat contrived example, what would happen if Exception were really an AccessViolationException or some other exception indicating that the process state has been corrupted? What you really want to do is get out fast before persistent data is corrupted or more work is lost. To help solve this problem and minimize the chance that you will catch exceptions like this, CLR 4.0 introduces Corrupted State Exceptions, which cannot be caught by normal catch statements. There are still places where you do want to catch these types of exceptions, particularly in your application’s “main” function or when you are loading add-ins.  There are also rare circumstances when you know code that throws an exception isn’t dangerous, such as when calling native code. In order to support these scenarios, a new HandleProcessCorruptedStateExceptions attribute has been added. This attribute is added to the function that catches these exceptions. There is also a process wide compatibility switch named legacyCorruptedStateExceptionsPolicy which when set to true will cause the code to operate under the older exception handling behavior. • Developing a TCK: Spec Lead Call for Spec Leads 20 December

    - by Heather VanCura
    The JCP Program will be hosting a Spec Lead call on 20 December on the topic of developing a Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK).  A Technology Compatibility Kit is a required output of a JSR at Final Release, along with the Specification and Reference Implementation (RI).   The TCK must test all aspects of a specification that impact how compatible an implementation of that specification would be, such as the public API and all mandatory elements of the specification. The Reference Implementation is required to pass the TCK. A vendor's implementation of a specification is only considered compatible if the implementation passes the TCK fully and completely.  The TCK is used to test implementations of the Final Specification to make sure that they are fully compatible. The call will be recorded and posted on the JCP.org multimedia page along with any related materials.   Invitation details for the online meeting:Topic: SL Call: Developing a TCK Date: Thursday, December 20, 2012 Time: 9:30 am, Pacific Standard Time (San Francisco, GMT-08:00) Meeting Number: 804 390 892 Meeting Password: 2222 ------------------------------------------------------- To join the audio conference -------------------------------------------------------     +1 (866) 682-4770 (US)     Conference code: 945-4597    Security code: 52775 ("JCPSL" on your phone handset)     For global access numbers see http://www.intercall.com/oracle/access_numbers.htm         Or +1 (408) 774-4073

  • Where/what is the specification for odata.service meta tag?

    - by Sam Saffron
    I would like to add some tags to our web app to enable auto-discovery of our odata feeds. So for example Nerd Dinner has the following tag: <link rel="odata.service" title="NerdDinner.com OData Service" href="/Services/OData.svc" /><link rel="odata.feed" title="NerdDinner.com OData Service - Dinners" href="/Services/OData.svc/Dinners" /> The trouble is that I have 4 different feeds and am unclear if I am allowed to add multiple link rel="odata.service" to the document. Where is the specification for this meta tag? (follow on question, are there any apps that take advantage of this tag that I can use to test out behavior)

  • Specification, modeling and programming are principially the same, right?

    - by Gabriel Šcerbák
    In formal specifications based on abstract algebraic types and equational theory you use formulas of equational theory to specify theory. System which will satisfy those constraints is called in formal logic a model. Modeling is process of creating a model, which abstracts of some aspects, which are unnecessary details for a specific case. So concrete system has to adhere to created model in observed aspects. Programming is a process of creating a program which will have specific behaviour - will perform specific algorithms - and programming languages through different paradigms enable us to think in a certain specific way, which abstracts of some details, usually machine specific ones. So could we be doing all those things at the same time, because they are principially the same? Is declarative programming the nearest attempt to do that? Could we use some sort f programming languages which will be good for programming as well as for modeling and specification?

  • JVM specification and Java compiler code useful for SCJP preparation ?

    - by BenoitParis
    I'm preparing the SCJP exam with the almost official study book ("SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065") I understand that Java programming is writting code that fulfills a certain high-level contract; So that Java can stay platform-independent. However, I have trouble understanding and remembering things when it comes to highly specific SCJP items (and they are numerous) The book stays high-level and does not provide examples of how one compiler would handle things. This is the same thing for runtime issues (JVM level): things are too much abstract for me. Rules often seems arbitrary and therefore, with no well defined purpose, are difficult to remember. Or maybe it's that sometimes I just don't get the underlying purpose. And here is the question: Would a JVM specification and/or some java compiler code help in preparing the SCJP? Have you had the need for such material or is the book sufficient enough? Also, please share the resources you used, apart from the book.

  • how to generate a random string, and specify the length you want, or better generate unique string on specification you want

    - by HCP
    There is a library to generate Random numbers, so why in't there a library for generation random strings ? In other words how to generate a random string, and specify the length you want, or better generate unique string on specification you want i.e specify the length, a unique string within my application is enough for me. I know I can create a Guid (globally unique identifier) but those are quite long, longer they need to be. int length = 8; string s = RandomString.NextRandomString(length) uniquestringCollection = new UniquestringsCollection(length) string s2 = uniquestringCollection.GetNext();

  • Firebird query is crashing with org.firebirdsql.jdbc.FBSQLException: GDS Exception. 335544364. reque

    - by user321395
    I am using JdbcTemplate.queryForInt to insert a Row into the DB, and then get the ID back. The Query is "INSERT INTO metadocs(NAME) values (?) RETURNING METADOCID". If I run the statement in Flamerobin, it works fine. However, if I run it from Java, I get the following error: org.springframework.jdbc.UncategorizedSQLException: PreparedStatementCallback; uncategorized SQLException for SQL [INSERT INTO metadocs(NAME) values (?) • Using the JRockit Flight Recorder as an Exception Profiler.

    - by Marcus Hirt
    There is a lot of new data points in the JRockit Flight Recorder compared to the data available in the old JRA. One set of data deals with exceptions and where they are thrown. In JRA, it was possible to tell how many exceptions were thrown, but it was not possible to determine from where they were thrown. Here is how to do a recording with exception profiling enabled from JRockit Mission Control. 1. Right click on the JVM to profile, select Start Flight Recording. 2. Select the Profiling with Exceptions template.   3. Wait for the recording to finish. The count down for the time left will show in the Flight Recorder Control view. 4. When done the recording will automatically be downloaded and displayed. To show the exceptions, go to the Code | Exceptions tab.

  • How do I solve an AntiForgeryToken exception that occurs after an iisreset in my ASP.Net MVC app?

    - by Colin Newell
    I’m having problems with the AntiForgeryToken in ASP.Net MVC. If I do an iisreset on my web server and a user continues with their session they get bounced to a login page. Not terrible but then the AntiForgery token blows up and the only way to get going again is to blow away the cookie on the browser. With the beta version of version 1 it used to go wrong when reading the cookie back in for me so I used to scrub it before asking for a validation token but that was fixed when it was released. For now I think I’ll roll back to my code that fixed the beta problem but I can’t help but think I’m missing something. Is there a simpler solution, heck should I just drop their helper and create a new one from scratch? I get the feeling that a lot of the problem is the fact that it’s tied so deeply into the old ASP.Net pipeline and is trying to kludge it into doing something it wasn’t really designed to do. I had a look in the source code for the ASP.Net MVC 2 RC and it doesn't look like the code has changed much so while I haven't tried it, I don't think there are any answers there. Here is the relevant part of the stack trace of the exception. Edit: I just realised I didn't mention that this is just trying to insert the token on the GET request. This isn't the validation that occurs when you do a POST kicking off. System.Web.Mvc.HttpAntiForgeryException: A required anti-forgery token was not supplied or was invalid. ---> System.Web.HttpException: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. • How do i assert my exception message with JUNIT Test annotation ?

    - by Cshah
    i have written a few junits with @Test annotation. If my test method throws a checked exception and if i want to assert the message along with the exception, is there a way to do so with JUNIT @Test annotation.AFAIK, Junit 4.7 doesnt provide this feature but does any future versions provide it. I know in .NET you can assert the message and the exception class. Looking for similar feature in the java world. This is what i want @Test (expected = RuntimeException.class, message = "Employee ID is null") public void shouldThrowRuntimeExceptionWhenEmployeeIDisNull() { }

  • Java EE 8 update

    - by delabassee
    Planning for Java EE 8 is now well underway. As you know, a few weeks ago, we conducted a three part Java EE 8 Community Survey (you can find the final summary here). The data gathered have been very influential for the next steps. You can now expect over the coming weeks and months to see updates on the various specifications that compose the Java EE platform. Some Specification Leads are busy gathering additional feedback regarding what they should focus their efforts on (e.g. CDI 2 survey). Other Specification Leads have already publicly exposed what they think should be one of the focus for the evolution of the specification they lead.  For example, adding Server-Senet Events (SSE) support in JAX-RS is being discussed here and adding MVC support is being discussed here. Please remember that the fact we are now discussing any feature does not insure that it will be included in the proposal, nor in any particular update to Java EE. We can expect additional enhancements, changes and evolutions as we get closer to the finalisation of the different specifications... and there is still a long way to go with these specification proposals! Linda DeMichiel, Java EE Co-Specification Lead, has recently posted a draft proposal for the Java EE 8 Platform specification. Linda's goal is to recruit people and companies supporting this proposal before submitting it to the JCP.  This draft proposal is very interesting reading as it contains relevant information on the plans for Java EE 8 such as : The themes: Support for the latest web standards (eg. HTTP 2.0)  Continue to work on ease of development Improve the infrastructure for cloud support Alignment with Java SE 8 New JSRs to be added to the platform: J-Cache Java API for JSON Binding Java Configuration Plans for the Web Profile Plans on technologies to prune in Java EE 8, ... So if you haven't done it yet, I really encourage you to read the Java EE 8 draft proposal! Our goal for the Java EE 8 specification is for it to be finalized in the second half of 2016. It is important to note that we are in the early days of Java EE 8 and at this stage everything (themes, content, timing, etc.) is preliminary. Everything still needs to be discussed, challenged and agreed within the different Java Community Process (JCP) Experts Groups (EGs). Some EGs that still need to be formed! It could also means that the roadmap will have to be adjusted to follow the progress being made in the different EGs. This is also a good occasion to remind you that participation within those upcoming JCP Experts Groups is encouraged. Contributing in an EG is an effective lever to influence what Java EE 8 will become! Finally, as things get more concrete, we will share details on how to engage in the different Java EE 8 related Adopt-a-JSR initiatives, another way to contribute. You can also read other posts related to Java EE 8, here at The Aquarium blog. Just look for articles with the 'javaee8' tag.

  • Inject runtime exception to pthread sometime fails. How to fix that?

    - by lionbest
    I try to inject the exception to thread using signals, but some times the exception is not get caught. For example the following code: void _sigthrow(int sig) { throw runtime_error(strsignal(sig)); } struct sigaction sigthrow = {{&_sigthrow}}; void* thread1(void*) { sigaction(SIGINT,&sigthrow,NULL); try { while(1) usleep(1); } catch(exception &e) { cerr << "Thread1 catched " << e.what() << endl; } }; void* thread2(void*) { sigaction(SIGINT,&sigthrow,NULL); try { while(1); } catch(exception &e) { cerr << "Thread2 catched " << e.what() << endl; //never goes here } }; If I try to execute like: int main() { pthread_t p1,p2; pthread_create( &p1, NULL, &thread1, NULL ); pthread_create( &p2, NULL, &thread2, NULL ); sleep(1); pthread_kill( p1, SIGINT); pthread_kill( p2, SIGINT); sleep(1); return EXIT_SUCCESS; } I get the following output: Thread1 catched Interrupt terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error' what(): Interrupt Aborted How can I make second threat catch exception? Is there better idea about injecting exceptions?

  • What does "GPL with classpath exception" mean in practice?

    - by Thilo
    Oracle seems to license all their Java-related open source code under the GPL with a classpath exception. From what I understand, this seems to allow to combine these libraries with your own code into products that do not have to be covered by the GPL. How does this work? What are examples of how I can and cannot use these classes? Why was this new license used as opposed to the LGPL, which seems to allow for pretty much the same things, but is better established and understood? What are the differences to the LGPL?
