  • How long does it take to iterate through a long loop?

    - by Carl Rosenberger
    On a modern 64-Bit machine, how long do you think it takes to iterate through all the positive long numbers? Below is a code snippet in Java to demonstrate the idea. Without running the code yourself, how long do you think this code is going to run? How long will similar code run in other programming languages? public class LongLoop { public static void main(String[] args) { long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); for (long i = 0; i < Long.MAX_VALUE; i++) { // do nothing, just loop } long stopTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); long duration = stopTime - startTime; System.out.println("Time taken: " + duration + " milliseconds"); } }

  • Why does an event handler never get called if it's added within a loop on an ienumerable?

    - by André Carvalho
    Why does an event handler never get called if it's added within a loop on an ienumerable? For instance: IEnumerable<MyType> list = someCollection.Select(i => new MyType(i)); foreach (var item in list) item.PropertyChanged += item_PropertyChanged; <-- this never gets called Bu if list is assigned like list = someCollection.Select(i => new MyType(i)).ToArray(); the event handler does get called.. Why? (I imagine it has something to do with the fact that a LINQ query is lazy, but the fact of looping through the result isn't enough?)

  • How Do I Loop Through a Date Range in Reverse?

    - by Russ Bradberry
    I have a date range that I would like to be able to loop through in reverse. Give the following, how would I accomplish this, the standard Range operator doesn't seem t be working properly. >> sd = Date.parse('2010-03-01') => Mon, 01 Mar 2010 >> ed = Date.parse('2010-03-05') => Fri, 05 Mar 2010 >> (sd..ed).to_a => [Mon, 01 Mar 2010, Tue, 02 Mar 2010, Wed, 03 Mar 2010, Thu, 04 Mar 2010, Fri, 05 Mar 2010] >> (ed..sd).to_a => [] as you can see, the range operator works properly form start to end, but not from end to start.

  • How can I loop through variables in SPSS? I want to avoid code duplication.

    - by chucknelson
    Is there a "native" SPSS way to loop through some variable names? All I want to do is take a list of variables (that I define) and run the same procedure for them: pseudo-code - not really a good example, but gets the point across... for i in varlist['a','b','c'] do FREQUENCIES VARIABLES=varlist[i] / ORDER=ANALYSIS. end I've noticed that people seem to just use R or Python SPSS plugins to achieve this basic array functionality, but I don't know how soon I can get those configured (if ever) on my installation of SPSS. SPSS has to have some native way to do this...right?

  • How can I return default at loop end in Scheme?

    - by Kufi Annan
    I'm trying to implement back-tracking search in Scheme. So far, I have the following: (define (backtrack n graph assignment) (cond (assignment-complete n assignment) (assignment) ) (define u (select-u graph assignment)) (define c 1) (define result 0) (let forLoop () (when (valid-choice graph assignment c) (hash-set! assignment u c) (set! result (backtrack n graph assignment)) (cond ((not (eq? result #f)) result)) (hash-remove! assignment u) ) (set! c (+ c 1)) (when (>= n c) (forLoop)) ) #f ) My functions assignment-complete and select-u pass unit tests. The argument assignment is a hash-table make with (make-hash), so it should be fine. I believe the problem I have is related to returning false at the end of the loop, if no recursive returns a non-false value (which should be a valid assignment).

  • jwplayer embedded with recent flash with html5 back end cant hide controls or add autoplay and loop

    - by Daniel Redwood
    Hey all, After the unfortunate realization that Firefox is just not going to play nice with an embedded HTML5 video with my server set up, I've decided to go the JW Player route, since it's compatible with iPads and iPhones. I can get the file to show up on my page, but it's big and heavy. I would like for it to be just the video, no controls. Autoplay and on loop. Can you help me out? Here's the code... <div id="container">Loading the player ...</div> jwplayer("container").setup({ flashplayer: "jwplayer/player.swf", file: "Video/fernando.m4v", height: 520, width: 780, }); <script type='text/javascript' src='swfobject.js'></script>

  • How to loop an executable command in the terminal in Linux?

    - by user1452373
    Let me first describe my situation, I am working on a Linux platform and have a collection of .bmp files that add one to the picture number from filename0022.bmp up to filename0680.bmp. So a total of 658 pictures. I want to be able to run each of these pictures through a .exe file that operates on the picture then kicks out the file to a file specified by the user, it also has some threshold arguments: lower, upper. So the typical call for the executable is: ./filter inputfile outputfile lower upper Is there a way that I can loop this call over all the files just from the terminal or by creating some kind of bash script? My problem is similar to this: Execute a command over multiple files with a batch file but this time I am working in a Linux command line terminal. Thank you for your help, Luke H

  • What is the basic design idea behind the Scala for-loop implicit box/unboxing of numerical types?

    - by IODEV
    I'm trying to understand the behavior of Scala for-loop implicit box/unboxing of "numerical" types. Why does the two first fail but not the rest? 1) Fails: scala for (i:Long <- 0 to 10000000L) {} <console>:19: error: type mismatch;<br> found : Long(10000000L) required: Int for (i:Long <- 0 to 10000000L) {} ^ 2 Fails: scala for (i <- 0 to 10000000L) {} <console>:19: error: type mismatch; found : Long(10000000L) required: Int for (i <- 0 to 10000000L) {} ^ 3) Works: scala for (i:Long <- 0L to 10000000L) {} 4) Works: scala for (i <- 0L to 10000000L) {}

  • How to fill two-dimensional array using java enhanced loop?

    - by Shark
    Basically, I am trying this, but this only leaves array filled with zeros. I know how to fill it with normal for loop (such as for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++) and so on), but why is my variant is not working? Any help would be appreciated. char[][] array = new char[x][y]; for (char[] row : array) for (char element : row) element = '~';

  • Smarty iteration: is there a similar function when not in a foreach loop?

    - by Kyle Sevenoaks
    Hi, I'm trying to add a JS fly to basket plugin to the site I'm working on, but the plugin needs unique productID numbers, is there a way to iterate this in Smarty when not in a foreach loop? Something like: {$smarty.foreach.foo.iteration} Here's the code I need to itrate: <span id="slidingProd57404045"> <a href="{link controller=order action=addToCart id=$product.ID returnPath=true}" rel="nofollow" class="addToCart" title="Bestill" onclick="addToBasket(57404045); return false;" id="fly_to_basket">&nbsp;</a> </span> The 57404045 needs to be iterated. Thanks.

  • BufferedReader ready method in a while loop to determine EOF?

    - by BobTurbo
    I have a large file (wikipedia english arcticles only database as xml file) I am using to read one character at a time using BufferedReader. The psuedo code is: file = BufferedReader... while (file.ready()) character = file.read() is this actually valid? Or will ready just return false when it is waiting for the HDD to return data and not actually when the EOF has been reached? I tried to use if (file.read() == -1) but seemed to run into an infinite loop that I literally could not find. I am just wondering if it is reading the whole file as my statistics say 444 380 wikipedia pages have been read but I thought there were many more articles..

  • Perl, Array called by scalar doesn't work in foreach loop.

    - by foxhop
    This code outputs the scalars in the row array properly: $line = "This is my favorite test"; @row = split(/ /, $line); print $row[0]; print $row[1]; The same code inside a foreach loop doesn't print any scalar values: foreach $line (@lines){ @row = split(/ /, $line); print $row[0]; print $row[1]; } What could cause this to happen? I am new to perl coming from python. I need to learn perl for my new position.

  • R matrix handling expressions aren't evaluated in a function or a "for" loop - Column extract doesn't seem to work

    - by Sal Leggio
    I have an R matrix named ddd. When I enter this, everything works fine: i <- 1 shapiro.test(ddd[,y]) ad.test(ddd[,y]) stem(ddd[,y]) print(y) The calls to Shapiro Wilk, Anderson Darling, and stem all work, and extract the same column. If I put this code in a "for" loop, the calls to Shapiro Wilk, and Anderson Darling stop working, while the the stem & leaf call and the print call continue to work. for (y in 7:10) { shapiro.test(ddd[,y]) ad.test(ddd[,y]) stem(ddd[,y]) print(y) } The decimal point is 1 digit(s) to the right of the | 0 | 0 0 | 899999 1 | 0 [1] 7 The same thing happens if I try and write a function. SW & AD do not work. The other calls do. D <- function (y) { + shapiro.test(ddd[,y]) + ad.test(ddd[,y]) + stem(ddd[,y]) + print(y) } D(9) The decimal point is at the | 9 | 000 9 | 10 | 00000 [1] 9 Why don't all the calls behave the same way?

  • Loop with pointer arithmetic refuse to stay within boundary in C. Gives me segfault.

    - by Fred
    Hi have made this function which is made to replicate an error that I can't get past. It looks like this: void enumerate(double *c, int size){ while(c < &c[size]){ printf("%lf\n", *c); c++; } } I have added some printf's in there and it gives me: Adressof c: 0x100100080, Adressof c + size: 0x1001000a8 I then also print the address of c for each iteration of the loop, it reaches 0x1001000a8 but continues past this point even though the condition should be false as far as I can tell until I get a segfault. If anyone can spot the problem, please tell me, I have been staring at this for a while now. Thanks.

  • How to get the number of loop when using an iterator, in C++?

    - by pollux
    Dear reader, I'm working on a aplication where I draw a couple of images, like this: void TimeSlice::draw(float fX, float fY) { list<TimeSliceLevel*>::iterator it = levels.begin(); float level_x = x; float level_y = y; while(it != levels.end()) { (*it)->draw(level_x,level_y); level_y += (*it)->height; ++it; } } Though this is a bit incorrect. I need to position the TimeSliceLevel* on a X.. When I've got a for(int i = 0; i < slices.size(); ++i) loop, I can use x = i * width. Though I'm using an iterator as I've been told many times that's good programming : and I'm wondering if the iterator has a "index" number of something which I can use to calculate the new X position? (So it's more a question about using iterators) Kind regards, Pollux

  • Initializing new instances of a class in a loop, how can I persist an assignment to an event handler

    - by Pydroid
    This is a follow on question from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3020960/why-is-my-prototype-function-not-returning-the-property-of-the-instance $.getJSON(myjson, function(data) { var json = data; for (i in json) { juuvies[i] = new Juuvy(i,json[i], font, keyfontsize, valfontsize, orbcol, orbkeycol, orbvalcol, paper); juuvies[i].juuv_it(); var mykey = juuvies[i].init_nodes(); juuvies[i].orb.node.onmouseover = function() { console.log(mykey);}; } }); And my init_nodes function, Juuvy.prototype.init_nodes = function() { return this.key; } At this point of time, I get only the last key in the loop, instead of a unique pass each time. Is there a way I can persist the assignment for the event handler?

  • How can I loop through each of the days of a given week in Ruby?

    - by Angela
    I am defining monday and friday using the following: @monday = Date.today.at_beginning_of_week @friday = 5.days.since(@monday) But I actually need, for any given day, to loop through Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and take that date and put the output into a column. <th>Monday</th> <th>Tuesday</th> etcetera A given row, for example, would be: <tr><td>value(monday)</td><td>value(tuesday)</td><td>value(wednesday)</td></tr> This is where value is a method that takes args date. What's the cleanest way to do this? Thanks.

  • Is it faster to loop through a Python set of number or a set of letters?

    - by Scott Bartell
    Is it faster to loop through a Python set of numbers or a Python set of letters given that each set is the exact same length and each item within each set is the same length? Why? I would think that there would be a difference because letters have more possible characters [a-zA-Z] than numbers [0-9] and therefor would be more 'random' and likely affect the hashing to some extent. numbers = set([00000,00001,00002,00003,00004,00005, ... 99999]) letters = set(['aaaaa','aaaab','aaaac','aaaad', ... 'aaabZZ']) # this is just an example, it does not actually end here for item in numbers: do_something() for item in letters: do_something() where len(numbers) == len(letters) Update: I am interested in Python's specific hashing algorithm and what happens behind the scenes with this implementation.

  • Scala loop returns as Unit and compiler points to "for" syntax?

    - by DeLongey
    Seems like Unit is the theme of my troubles today. I'm porting a JSON deserializer that uses Gson and when it comes to this for loop: def deserialize(json:JsonElement, typeOfT:Type, context:JsonDeserializationContext) = { var eventData = new EventData(null, null) var jsonObject = json.getAsJsonObject for(entry <- jsonObject.entrySet()) { var key = entry.getKey() var element = entry.getValue() element if("previous_attributes".equals(key)) { var previousAttributes = new scala.collection.mutable.HashMap[String, Object]() populateMapFromJSONObject(previousAttributes, element.getAsJsonObject()) eventData.setPreviousAttributes(previousAttributes) eventData } else if ("object".equals(key)) { val `type` = element.getAsJsonObject().get("object").getAsString() var cl = objectMap.get(`type`).asInstanceOf[StripeObject] var `object` = abstractObject.retrieve(cl, key) eventData.setObject(`object`) eventData } } } The compiler spits out the error type mismatch; found : Unit required: com.stripe.EventData and it points to this line here: for(entry <- jsonObject.entrySet()) Questions Confirm that it is indeed the Gson method entrySet() appearing as unit? If not, what part of the code is creating the issue? I've set return types/values for eventData class methods Is there a workaround for the Gson Unit issue? Thanks!

  • Drop into read-eval-print loop from PHP code?

    - by Mickey
    Is there a way to drop into a read-eval-print loop from inside PHP code during execution, in a script that was run from the command line? That is, like php -a or phpsh? Or do I have to re-implement a REPL from scratch? I can't find any way to do it. To clarify: the reason why I need to do this is that I want to automatically include all the files in my project once the REPL starts, instead of having to manually include everything by hand.
