• Can shared memory be read and validated without mutexes?

  On Linux I'm using shmget and shmat to setup a shared memory segment that one process will write to and one or more processes will read from. The data that is being shared is a few megabytes in size and when updated is completely rewritten; it's never partially updated. I have my shared memory segment laid out as follows: ------------------------- | t0 | actual data | t1 | ------------------------- where t0 and t1 are copies of the time when the writer began its update (with enough precision such that successive updates are guaranteed to have differing times). The writer first writes to t1, then copies in the data, then writes to t0. The reader on the other hand reads t0, then the data, then t1. If the reader gets the same value for t0 and t1 then it considers the data consistent and valid, if not, it tries again. Does this procedure ensure that if the reader thinks the data is valid then it actually is? Do I need to worry about out-of-order execution (OOE)? If so, would the reader using memcpy to get the entire shared memory segment overcome the OOE issues on the reader side? (This assumes that memcpy performs it's copy linearly and ascending through the address space. Is that assumption valid?)

• Using application roles with DataReader

  I have an application that should use an application role from the database. I'm trying to make this work with queries that are actually run using Subsonic (2). To do this, I created my own DataProvider, which inherits from Subsonic's SqlDataProvider. It overrides the CreateConnection function, and calls sp_appsetrole to set the application role after the connection is created. This part works fine, and I'm able to get data using the application role. The problem comes when I try to unset the application role. I couldn't find any place in the code where my provider is called after the query is done, so I tried to add my own, by changing SubSonic code. The problem is that Subsonic uses a data reader. It loads data from the data reader, and then closes it. If I unset the application role before the data reader is closed, I get an error saying: There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command which must be closed first. If I unset the application role after the data reader is closed, I get an error saying ExecuteNonQuery requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is closed. I can't seem to find a way to close the data reader without closing the connection.

  Hi, I must find a way to do this in C#, if possible... I must loop on my folder list (mysql table), and for each folder I instanciate I must do another query, but when I do this it says : "There is already an open DataReader associated with this Connection" and I am inside a mysqlreader loop already. Note that I have oversimplified the code just to show you, the fact is that I must do queries inside a mysqlreader loop, and it looks to be impossible as they are on the same connection? • A C# Refactoring Question...

  I came accross the following code today and I didn't like it. It's fairly obvious what it's doing but I'll add a little explanation here anyway: Basically it reads all the settings for an app from the DB and the iterates through all of them looking for the DB Version and the APP Version then sets some variables to the values in the DB (to be used later). I looked at it and thought it was a bit ugly - I don't like switch statements and I hate things that carry on iterating through a list once they're finished. So I decided to refactor it. My question to all of you is how would you refactor it? Or do you think it even needs refactoring at all?   The title is a little confusing. I'll elaborate. As far as I can tell, the Google Docs Viewer tool accepts a link to a raw document file (e.g. .doc, .pdf, et. al.), and renders its contents in the browser. For example, this url to a pdf http://research.google.com/archive/bigtable-osdi06.pdf when passed to Viewer, returns this link: http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch.google.com%2Farchive%2Fbigtable-osdi06.pdf What I'm trying to achieve is, use the Viewer to view a document already hosted in Google Docs (i.e. no longer a raw document file). When passing a link to a Google Docs document to the Viewer, the result is not as expected. It renders the link's HTML source instead of the document's contents. The reason I want to do this is that I want to be able to use the "embed" feature of Viewer to view Google Docs documents. Does Google Docs have a "link to embeddable view" feature? P.S. Here is a sample snippet to an embedded document.   In couchdb website - technical overview - security and validation - http://couchdb.apache.org/docs/overview.html - it writes that (on reader access part) "To protect document contents, CouchDB documents can have a reader list. This is an optional list of reader-names allowed to read the document. When a reader list is used, protected documents are only viewable by listed users." • StreamReader returning another char

  I'm trying to read the content of a file with a StreamReader, that receives a FileStream. The file has some spaces inside (char 32) and the StreamReader is reading them as 0 (char 48). The screenshot shows the FileStream buffer and the StreamReader buffer. Both have the value 32, but when I call Read(), it returns 48. Am I missing something here? By the way, the code is running under .NET Compact Framework. • Reading XML or objects from a Web service

  This is my first time working with webservices and I am a bit lost. I successfully called the functions, but I only can get one value from the service. I read that the easiest way is to read xml or create objects and then call their values. Currently I use functions that return the desired value but I need to call them 3 times to get all the data witch is a waste of time and resources. I tried to call the service with the URL and use it as a website or getting the service to work the same way without importing into the program. The thing is that i cant find a way to pass the values into the url, because of that i get only blank pages. What is the fastest way to get my data from the services? I need city name, temperature and a flag if the city is valid. I need to pass the zip code to the service. Thank you. • Serialport List Read problem and NullReferenceException?

  Hello everybody, Using Microsoft VC# 2008 Express (little fact about me : non experience in c#, programskills further very beginnerlevel. This peace op program is to communicate with Zigbee switching walloutlets (switching, status info). and is downloaded from http://plugwiselib.codeplex.com/SourceControl/list/changesets The problem: NullRefferenceException was UnHandled private void port_DataReceived(object sender, SerialDataReceivedEventArgs e) {// Event for receiving data string txt = port.ReadExisting(); Console.WriteLine(txt); List<PlugwiseMessage> msg = reader.Read (Regex.Split (txt, "\r\n" )); //Console.WriteLine( msg ); DataReceived(sender, new System.EventArgs(), msg); VC# Marks the last line and says msg is empty. so i looked further. Msg come's from txt text is filled with "000002D200C133E1\r\nPutFifoUnicast 40 : Handle 722 :"< so it goes wrong in or reader.Read or in the List so i looked further: public List<PlugwiseMessage> Read(string[] serialData) { Console.WriteLine(serialData); List<PlugwiseMessage> output = new List<PlugwiseMessage>(); Console.WriteLine(output); Both (serialData) as (output); are empty. So can i assume that the problem is in: Read(string[] serialData) But now the questions, Is Read(string[] serialData) something which is a Windows.Refence or is is from a Method ? and IF this is so is this then reader.READ (how can i find this)? (answered my own question proberly)(method reader)(private PlugwiseReader reader) So why isn't is working trough the serialData ? or is it the List<PlugwiseMessage> part, but i have no idea how it is filled can sombody help me ?

• convert flv to mp3 with Java

  Hi, I'm pretty new in developing programs in Java. I'm currently writing a program that converts a flv video into mp3. I have already written such a program in Visual Studio.net C#, but the Problem is, that it isn't cross platform compatible... I used the ffmpeg binary to convert the video into mp3, but I can't find ffmpeg binaries for Mac and Linux. (if so, I could start the specific binaries from java, depending on the OS) So I tried to convert the video with Xuggle, but the final mp3 has 0 bytes. My current code is the following: IMediaReader reader = ToolFactory.makeReader("video.flv"); reader.addListener(ToolFactory.makeWriter("music.mp3", reader)); while (reader.readPacket() == null) do {} while(false); Thanks in advance. p.s sorry for my bad english
