  • How can I fetch Google static maps with TIdHTTP?

    - by cloudstrif3
    I'm trying to return content from maps.google.com from within Delphi 2006 using the TIdHTTP component. My code is as follows procedure TForm1.GetGoogleMap(); var t_GetRequest: String; t_Source: TStringList; t_Stream: TMemoryStream; begin t_Source := TStringList.Create; try t_Stream := TMemoryStream.Create; try t_GetRequest := 'http://maps.google.com/maps/api/staticmap?' + 'center=Brooklyn+Bridge,New+York,NY' + '&zoom=14' + '&size=512x512' + '&maptype=roadmap' + '&markers=color:blue|label:S|40.702147,-74.015794' + '&markers=color:green|label:G|40.711614,-74.012318' + '&markers=color:red|color:red|label:C|40.718217,-73.998284' + '&sensor=false'; IdHTTP1.Post(t_GetRequest, t_Source, t_Stream); t_Stream.SaveToFile('google.html'); finally t_Stream.Free; end; finally t_Source.Free; end; end; However I keep getting the response HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden. I assume this means that I don't have permission to make this request but if I copy the url into my web browser IE 8, it works fine. Is there some header information that I need or something else?

  • Custom UILabel does not show text.

    - by Oscar
    Hi! I've made an custom UILabel class in which i draw a red line at the bottom of the frame. The red line is showing but i cant get the text to show. #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface LetterLabel : UILabel { } @end #import "LetterLabel.h" @implementation LetterLabel - (id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frame { if (self = [super initWithFrame:frame]) { // Initialization code } return self; } - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { CGContextSetLineWidth(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(), 2.0); CGContextSetRGBStrokeColor(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(), 1.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0); CGContextBeginPath(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext()); CGContextMoveToPoint(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(), 0.0, self.frame.size.height); CGContextAddLineToPoint(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(), self.frame.size.width, self.frame.size.height); CGContextStrokePath(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext()); } - (void)dealloc { [super dealloc]; } @end #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import "Word.h" @interface WordView : UIView { Word *gameWord; } @property (nonatomic, retain) Word *gameWord; @end @implementation WordView @synthesize gameWord; - (id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frame { if (self = [super initWithFrame:frame]) { self.backgroundColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; LetterLabel *label = [[LetterLabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 20, 30)]; label.backgroundColor = [UIColor cyanColor]; label.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentCenter; label.textColor = [UIColor blackColor]; [label setText:@"t"]; [self addSubview:label]; } return self; } - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { // Drawing code } - (void)dealloc { [gameWord release]; [super dealloc]; } @end

  • Table View rotate, but not properly (shape change)

    - by Pencrace
    Hello everyone, Here is the thing. I have a ViewController which contain a view in full window. And the program run in landscape mode. I want to put an UITableView over the full screen view but only on right half part of the screen. So I add a UITableView in my view controller, I used the Interface Builder in order to set the Table View in the upper half of the screen so It will be on the right part in LandscapeLeft mode. I searched for on a lot of forum how to rotate my Table View. And so it does... except, It get stuck on the upper half of the landscape mode, it should stick on the right half. I'm not a iPhone coder since long, so I'm a bit confused on how to solve this problem. Do you have any idea on how to resize or make the TableView rotate properly. Thanks,

  • Coloring text with css using jQuery

    - by ArtWorkAD
    Hi, I have a little problem adding a class to a span element and so coloring it in order to perform simple validation. Here is my js: function validateKey(){ var length = $('#appkey').val().length; if(length != 8){ $('#appkey').addClass('error'); $('#appKeyInfo').addClass('error'); return false; }else{ $('#appkey').removeClass('error'); $('#appKeyInfo').removeClass('error'); return true; } } And html: <label>KEY</label></br> <input type="text" id="appkey" value=""/></br> <span id="appKeyInfo">Dein App-Key aus 8 Ziffern</span> And the jsfiddle: example Any ideas? UPDATE: coloring of appKeyInfo fails, coloring appkey works. When I remove color:red and type font-weight:bold instead the text is bold on error. when I remove color definition of appKeyInfo the text can be colored red on error, strange thing, but I need a font color for the appKeyInfo

  • How to sort objects in a many-to-many relationship in ruby on rails?

    - by Kenji Kina
    I've been trying to deal with this problem for a couple of hours now and haven't been able to come up with a clean solution. It seems I'm not too good with rails... Anyway, I have the following: In code: class Article < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :line_aspects, :dependent => :destroy has_many :aspects, :through => :line_aspects #plus a name field end class LineAspect < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :article belongs_to :aspect end class Aspect < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :data_type has_many :line_aspects has_many :articles, :through => :line_aspects end Now, what I would like to do, is to sort these in two steps. First list of Articles by their Articles.name, and then inside sort them by Aspect.name (note, not the middleman). For instance, alphabetically (sorry if the notation is not correct): [{ article => 'Apple', line_aspects => [ {:value => 'red'}, #corresponding to the Attribute with :name => 'color' {:value => 'small'} #corresponding to the Attribute with :name => 'shape' ] },{ article => 'Watermelon', line_aspects => [ {:value => 'green'}, #corresponding to the Attribute with :name => 'color' {:value => 'big'} #corresponding to the Attribute with :name => 'shape' ] }] Again, note that these are ordered by the aspect name (color before shape) instead of the specific values of each line (red before green). (NOTE: My intention is to displaye these in a table in the view) I have not found a good way to do this in rails yet (without resorting to N queries). Can anyone tell me a good way to do it?

  • Visual Studio 2008 Web Project problem with PNG files

    - by NoCarrier
    I've added a PNG file to a directory in my VS2k8 webforms project, and when I run the app, it refuses to render my image - it even knows the dimensions but renders a box with a red X. Oddly enough, if I double click the PNG file within VS2k8, it opens up in the IDE and displays fine (but only within the IDE). Does anyone have any clues? The path is correct.. I just have a basic default.aspx page with this in the body <img src="img/logo.png" /> if i navigate to img/logo.png in the browser, it shows a box with the same dimensions as my image, but a red x. Its finding the image, just not rendering it. It's showing up in IE running under the vs2k8 web server (localhost:5512/default.aspx) I've dropped a JPG in the same directory, and it shows up just fine. I'm not sure what type of PNG it is, but here is the kicker.... If i make an HTML file that references that image, copy both this HTML file and PNG file to my webserver (or just double click on the HTML page), it comes up JUST FINE. Its leading me to believe that the Visual Studio web server may not recognize PNG files (at least this one) properly?

  • How to find a programmer for my project?

    - by Al
    I'm building a web application to generate monthly subscription fees, but I've quickly realised I'm going to need some help with the project to finish it this century. I don't have any money upfront for a freelancer and every website I've found takes bids for project work. The tasks that need doing are flexible too because I can do whatever the other coder doesn't want to. I'm also happy to guide the developer and offer tips for performance/security/etc etc. My question is; how do I go about finding someone to work with on a profit-share basis? I'm sure there are a billion people like me with the "next killer app" but I genuinely believe in it. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks in advance! EDIT: I guess the trick is to find someone passionate enough about the subject as I am. Where would I find someone? Are there websites that broker profit-share deals on programming work?

  • Monotouch UITableView image "flashing" while background requests are fetched

    - by Themos Piperakis
    I am in need of some help from you guys. I have a Monotouch UITableView which contains some web images. I have implemented a Task to fetch them asynchronously so the UI is responsive, an even added some animations to fade them in when they are fetched from the web. My problems start when the user scrolls down very fast down the UITableView, so since the cells are resusable, several background tasks are queued for images. When he is at the bottom of the list, he might see the thumbnail displaying an image for another cell, then another, then another, then another, as the tasks are completed and each image replaces the other one. I am in need of some sort of checking whether the currently displayed cell corresponds to the correct image url, but not sure how to do that. Here is the code for my TableSource class. using System; using MonoTouch.UIKit; using MonoTouch.Foundation; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Threading; using System.Threading.Tasks; using System.Diagnostics; { public class ListDelegate:UITableViewDelegate { private UINavigationController nav; public override float GetHeightForRow (UITableView tableView, NSIndexPath indexPath) { return 128; } public override void RowSelected (UITableView tableView, NSIndexPath indexPath) { DealViewController c = new DealViewController(((ListDataSource)tableView.DataSource).deals[indexPath.Row].Id,nav); nav.PushViewController(c,true); tableView.DeselectRow(indexPath,true); } public ListDelegate(UINavigationController nav) { this.nav = nav; } } public class ListDataSource:UITableViewDataSource { bool toggle=true; Dictionary<string,UIImage> images = new Dictionary<string, UIImage>(); public List<MyDeal> deals = new List<MyDeal>(); Dictionary<int,ListCellViewController> controllers = new Dictionary<int, ListCellViewController>(); public ListDataSource(List<MyDeal> deals) { this.deals = deals; } public override int RowsInSection (UITableView tableview, int section) { return deals.Count; } public override UITableViewCell GetCell (UITableView tableView, MonoTouch.Foundation.NSIndexPath indexPath) { UITableViewCell cell = tableView.DequeueReusableCell("cell"); ListCellViewController cellController = null; if (cell == null || !controllers.ContainsKey(cell.Tag)) { cellController = new ListCellViewController(); NSBundle.MainBundle.LoadNib("ListCellViewController", cellController, null); cell = cellController.Cell; cell.Tag = Environment.TickCount; controllers.Add(cell.Tag, cellController); } else { cellController = controllers[cell.Tag]; } if (toggle) { cell.BackgroundView = new UIImageView(UIImage.FromFile("images/bg1.jpg")); } else { cell.BackgroundView = new UIImageView(UIImage.FromFile("images/bg2.jpg")); } toggle = !toggle; MyDeal d = deals[indexPath.Row]; cellController.SetValues(d.Title,d.Price,d.Value,d.DiscountPercent); GetImage(cellController.Thumbnail,d.Thumbnail); return cell; } private void GetImage(UIImageView img, string url) { img.Alpha = 0; if (url != string.Empty) { if (images.ContainsKey(url)) { img.Image = images[url]; img.Alpha = 1; } else { var context = TaskScheduler.FromCurrentSynchronizationContext (); Task.Factory.StartNew (() => { NSData imageData = NSData.FromUrl(new NSUrl(url)); var uimg = UIImage.LoadFromData(imageData); images.Add(url,uimg); return uimg; }).ContinueWith (t => { InvokeOnMainThread(()=>{ img.Image = t.Result; RefreshImage(img); }); }, context); } } } private void RefreshImage(UIImageView img) { UIView.BeginAnimations("imageThumbnailTransitionIn"); UIView.SetAnimationDuration(0.5f); img.Alpha = 1.0f; UIView.CommitAnimations(); } } } Here is the ListCellViewController, that contains a custom cell using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using MonoTouch.Foundation; using MonoTouch.UIKit; { public partial class ListCellViewController : UIViewController { #region Constructors // The IntPtr and initWithCoder constructors are required for items that need // to be able to be created from a xib rather than from managed code public ListCellViewController (IntPtr handle) : base(handle) { Initialize (); } [Export("initWithCoder:")] public ListCellViewController (NSCoder coder) : base(coder) { Initialize (); } public ListCellViewController () : base("ListCellViewController", null) { Initialize (); } void Initialize () { } public UIImageView Thumbnail { get{return thumbnailView;} } public UITableViewCell Cell { get {return cell;} } public void SetValues(string title,decimal price,decimal valuex,decimal discount,int purchases) { } #endregion } } All help is greatly appreciated

  • Custom UITableviewcell, CGGradient still shows when cell is selected?

    - by Burnsoft Ltd
    I'm using a custom tableview cell (like Tweetie's fast scrolling) i've added a gradient to the context, which looks really nice, but when I select the cell, the gradient is still visible. I'm not sure how to go about removing the gradient when the cell is selected? any ideas? cheers Nik - (void)drawContentView:(CGRect)r { CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); UIColor *backgroundColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; UIColor *textColor = [UIColor blackColor]; UIColor *dateColor = [UIColor colorWithRed:77.f/255.f green:103.f/255.f blue:155.f/255.f alpha:1]; if(self.selected) { backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; textColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; } [backgroundColor set]; CGContextFillRect(context, r); //add gradient CGGradientRef myGradient; CGColorSpaceRef myColorspace; size_t num_locations = 2; CGFloat locations[2] = {0.0, 1.0}; CGFloat components[8] = {0.9f, 0.9f, 0.9f, 0.7f, // Bottom Colour: Red, Green, Blue, Alpha. 1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0}; // Top Colour: Red, Green, Blue, Alpha. myColorspace = CGColorSpaceCreateDeviceRGB(); myGradient = CGGradientCreateWithColorComponents (myColorspace, components, locations, num_locations); CGColorSpaceRelease(myColorspace); CGPoint startPoint, endPoint; startPoint.x = 0; startPoint.y = self.frame.size.height; endPoint.x = 0; endPoint.y = self.frame.size.height-15; // just keep the gradient static size, never mind how big the cell is CGContextDrawLinearGradient (context, myGradient, startPoint, endPoint, 0); CGGradientRelease(myGradient); //gradient end //rest of custom drawing goes here.... } Should I be doing something in the if cell selected code?

  • Specialization hierarchy in a domain-model

    - by devoured elysium
    I'm trying to make the domain model of a management system. I have the following kinds of persons in this system: employee manager top mananger I decided to define a User, from where employee, manager and top manager will specialize from. What I don't know is what kind of specialization hierarchy I should choose from. I thought of two ways: or Which might be preferable and why? As a long time coder, every time I try to do a domain-model, I have to fight against the idea of trying to think in how I'm going to code this. From what I've understood, I should not think about those matters in the domain-model, only in object relationships. I don't have to think of code duplication or any of these kind of details here, so I can't really pick any of the options over the other. Thanks

  • Is there a more efficient way to run enum values through a switch-case statement in C# than this?

    - by C Patton
    I was wondering if there was a more efficient (efficient as in simpler/cleaner code) way of making a case statement like the one below... I have a dictionary. Its key type is an Enum and its value type is a bool. If the boolean is true, I want to change the color of a label on a form. The variable names were changed for the example. Dictionary<String, CustomType> testDict = new Dictionary<String, CustomType>(); //populate testDict here... Dictionary<MyEnum, bool> enumInfo = testDict[someString].GetEnumInfo(); //GetEnumInfo is a function that iterates through a Dictionary<String, CustomType> //and returns a Dictionary<MyEnum, bool> foreach (KeyValuePair<MyEnum, bool> kvp in enumInfo) { switch (kvp.Key) { case MyEnum.Enum1: if (someDictionary[kvp.Key] == true) { Label1.ForeColor = Color.LimeGreen; } else { Label1.ForeColor = Color.Red; } break; case MyEnum.Enum2: if (someDictionary[kvp.Key] == true) { Label2.ForeColor = Color.LimeGreen; } else { Label2.ForeColor = Color.Red; } break; } } So far, MyEnum has 8 different values.. which means I have 8 different case statements.. I know there must be an easier way to do this, I just can't conceptualize it in my head. If anyone could help, I'd greatly appreciate it. I love C# and I learn new things every day.. I absorb it like a sponge :) -CP

  • Which Workflow Engine do you recommend?

    - by Glenn
    I am kicking around the idea of using a workflow engine on this upcoming project. We know that there is a lot of caveats with using a workflow engine and we have a lot of development experience in many platforms so we would be willing to let the choice of workflow engine take precedence over our favorite toolset or developer IDE. We are more interested in internal workflow (i.e. petri net for easily changeable ERP purposes without involving additional coder time) than external workflow (i.e. aggregating SOAP calls into a transaction aware, higher level SOA). Which workflow engine would you recommend? We have superficially looked at offerings by Oracle, Microsoft, and some open source stuff too. It's all very overwhelming so please respond only if you have real life experience with implementing internal workflow.

  • Combining aggregate functions in an (ANSI) SQL statement

    - by morpheous
    I have aggregate functions foo(), foobar(), fredstats(), barneystats() I want to create a domain specific query language (DSQL) above my DB, to facilitate using using a domain language to query the DB. The 'language' comprises of boolean expressions (or more specifically SQL like criteria) which I then 'translate' back into pure (ANSI) SQL and send to the underlying Db. The following lines are examples of what the language statements will look like, and hopefully, it will help further clarify the concept: **Example 1** DQL statement: foobar('yellow') between 1 and 3 and fredstats('weight') > 42 Translation: fetch all rows in an underlying table where computed values for aggregate function foobar() is between 1 and 3 AND computed value for AGG FUNC fredstats() is greater than 42 **Example 2** DQL statement: fredstats('weight') < barneystats('weight') AND foo('fighter') in (9,10,11) AND foobar('green') <> 42 Translation: Fetch all rows where the specified criteria matches **Example 3** DQL statement: foobar('green') / foobar('red') <> 42 Translation: Fetch all rows where the specified criteria matches **Example 4** DQL statement: foobar('green') - foobar('red') >= 42 Translation: Fetch all rows where the specified criteria matches Given the following information: The table upon which the queries above are being executed is called 'tbl' table 'tbl' has the following structure (id int, name varchar(32), weight float) The result set returns only the tbl.id, tbl.name and the names of the aggregate functions as columns in the result set - so for example the foobar() AGG FUNC column will be called foobar in the result set. So for example, the first DQL query will return a result set with the following columns: id, name, foobar, fredstats Given the above, my questions then are: What would be the underlying SQL required for Example1 ? What would be the underlying SQL required for Example3 ? Given an algebraic equation comprising of AGGREGATE functions, Is there a way of generalizing the algorithm needed to generate the required ANSI SQL statement(s)? I am using PostgreSQL as the db, but I would prefer to use ANSI SQL wherever possible.

  • How to make a WPF ComboBox editable with custom values

    - by Liam
    I would like to have a combobox that allows selection from a list of values and also allow a custom value from the typed in text. For display reasons the items are a complex type (lets say the combobox item template displays a patch of color and a flag indicating if it is a custom color). public class ColorLevel { public decimal Intensity { get; set; } public bool IsCustom { get; set; } public Color BaseColor { get; set; } public override ToString() { return string.Format("{0}", Intensity*100); } } Example items var items = new [] { new ColorLevel { Intensity = 0.9m, IsCustom = false, BaseColor = Color.Red }, new ColorLevel { Intensity = 0.7m, IsCustom = false, BaseColor = Color.Red } } XAML <ComboBox SelectedItem="{Binding Path=SelectedColorLevel}" IsEditable="true" IsTextSearchEnabled="true"> </ComboBox> So the above markup works when an item is selected from the item list. And as you type with the text search the matching items are selected. If the typed text doesn't match an item then the SelectedColorLevel is set to null. The question is at what point (and how) is it best to create a new custom item that can be set to the SelectedColorLevel when the typed text doesn't match an item. For example I would want to assign a new item to the selected value such as new ColorLevel { Intensity = decimal.Parse(textvalue), IsCustom = true } or using an appropriate converter and databinding to the Text property.

  • Eclipse and JavaFX? is it just me?

    - by jeff porter
    I'm looking at learning JavaFX. I've tried setting Eclipse to develop a small app and I've downloaded the Eclipse plugin. Eclipse JavaFX plugin BUT... it just seems, well, flakey. So I have 3 questions... 1: Is there a better plugin? 2: Or is there some great set of tutorials out there that I'm missing? 3: finally, is it meant to be easy to call Java code from FX? I'm stuggling, it there a good example somewhere? On questions 1 & 2, Eclipse underlines code in red that just shouln't be. For example.. see this image... Why does it underline bit of imports in red? I know this is little of an open ended question. So I guess my main question is this... Is my experiance of JavaFX and Eclipse the best I can hope for? Or am I missing something ? (and I'm not looking for a Yes/No response) :-) Just looking for a discussion on how best to learn/develop JavaFx.

  • Presenting MVC to Old C++ Spaghetti Coders?

    - by leeand00
    I wish to present the idea of MVC to a bunch of old C++ spaghetti coders (at my local computer club). One of them that has alot of influence on the rest of the group seems to finally be getting the idea of encapsulation (largely due in part to this website). I was hoping that I could also point him in the right direction by showing him Model View Controller, but I need to do it in a way that makes sense to him, as well as it probably needs to be written in C/C++! I realize that MVC is a very old architectural pattern so it would seem to me that there should be something out there that would do the job. I'm more of a web developer, so I was wondering if anybody out there who is a good C/C++ coder could tell me what it is that made the MVC light switch turn on in your head.

  • AdvancedDataGrid dynamic text Value Coloring - ItemRenderer problem

    - by sri
    In my AdvancedDataGrid, I am adding dynamic values to cells by dragging a cell value to other cells. While copying, I am setting the value to listData and setting the Red color to the value in ItemRenderer. Everything is working fine, but when I scroll down/up, the values remains in the cells where thay are supposed to be(as I am setting to listData) but the coloring behaves wierd(as I am trying to set the color in ItemRenderer). I don't want to store the color of the value, but I should be able to see the dynamically created values in Red color. Is there a way, I can do this? Do I need to set the color to actual dataprovider object and then check in ItemRenderer? Can anyone help me with this? public class CustomItemRenderer extends AdvancedDataGridItemRenderer { private var _isDynamicValue:Boolean; .... .... //_isDynamicValue is set to true if the value is dynamic if(_isDynamicValue && listData.label) { setStyle("color", 0xFF0000); setStyle("fontWeight", "bold"); } else { setStyle("color", 0x000000); }

  • Listen to double click not click

    - by Mohsen
    I'm just wondering why click event happening when I dbclick an element? I have this code:(JSBIN) HTML <p id="hello">Hello World</p> JavaScript document.getElementById('hello').addEventListener('click', function(e){ e.preventDefault(); this.style.background = 'red'; }, false); document.getElementById('hello').addEventListener('dbclick', function(){ this.style.background = 'yellow'; }, false); It should do different things for click and double click, but it seems when you double click on the p it catch click event in advance and ignore double click. I tried preventDefault the click event too. How can I listen to just dbclick? UPDATE I had a typo in my code. dbclick is wrong. It's dblclick. Anyway the problem still exist. When user double clicks the click event happens. This is updated code that prove it:(JSBin) document.getElementById('hello').addEventListener('click', function(e){ e.preventDefault(); this.style.background = 'red'; this.innerText = "Hello World clicked"; }, false); document.getElementById('hello').addEventListener('dblclick', function(){ this.style.background = 'green'; }, false);

  • Chrome is leaking memory, when jQuery is used on events?

    - by user269386
    Hi, I'm experiencing an increase of memory usage, when I use the jQuery-eventhandling in Chrome. I've tested it with IE and FF as well, but there I couldn't see a suspicious rise of memory-usage, compared to Chrome. I'm using Chrome version 4.0.223.16 (unfortunately I'm forced to use this version, here) Simple example here. Just scroll with the mousewheel in the red box and open the Chrome-taskmanager and you will see an increase of memory which won't be released anymore: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/libs/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> jQuery(function () { jQuery("#div1").bind("mousewheel", function (event) { event.preventDefault(); }); }); </script> </head> <body> <div id="div1" style="width: 100px; height: 100px; background-color: red;"></div> </body> </html> Does anyone have experienced the same problem (or is it maybe solvend with a different version of chrome)? And does anyone have a fix for it? thanks

  • Understanding Symbols In Ruby

    - by Kezzer
    Despite reading this article, I'm still confused as to the representation of the data in memory when it comes to using symbols. If a symbol, two of them contained in different objects, exist in the same memory location, then how is it that they contain different values? I'd have expected the same memory location to contain the same value. As a quote from the link: Unlike strings, symbols of the same name are initialized and exist in memory only once during a session of ruby I just don't understand how it manages to differentiate the values contained in the same memory location. EDIT So let's consider the example: patient1 = { :ruby => "red" } patient2 = { :ruby => "programming" } patient1.each_key {|key| puts key.object_id.to_s} 3918094 patient2.each_key {|key| puts key.object_id.to_s} 3918094 patient1 and patient2 are both hashes, that's fine. :ruby however is a symbol. If we were to output the following: patient1.each_key {|key| puts key.to_s} Then what will be output? "red", or "programming"? FURTHER EDIT I'm still really quite confused. I'm thinking a symbol is a pointer to a value. Let's forget hashes for a second. The questions I have are; can you assign a value to a symbol? Is a symbol just a pointer to a variable with a value in it? If symbols are global, does that mean a symbol always points to one thing?

  • Is being a programmer a younger person's job?

    - by Saobi
    After you get old, say past 30 or 40. Can you still keep up with the young coders from your company, those fresh out of school, who can code for 15+ hours on 10 cans of redbulls (most people in Google, Facebook, etc) ? And given the lightning speed with which today's programming frameworks and architectures evolve, can you keep up with the most up to date stuff and be as proficient at them as the next college grad? I know for jobs like unix/c/embedded programming, it might be that the older the better. But for programming jobs in say web development, social media, search engine technology, etc. Do you become less and less competitive career-wise versus youngsters? For example, most coders in Google and Facebook, I believe are under 25 years old. In other words, once you reach a certain age, would it be unwise to continue to be a coder, and is it better to try becoming a project manager or architect?

  • How to color HTML elements based on a user command string

    - by Anonymous the Great
    When you type something like "red:Hi:" it will type "Hi" in red. The following script does not work and I do not know why, (The one who made the sorting PHP function is Graphain, thanks again!) <?php function getit($raw) { # If the value was posted $raw = isset($raw) ? $raw : ""; # Split it based on ':' $parsed = explode(':', $raw); $colorClass = ""; $text = ""; if (count($parsed) >= 2) { $colorClass = $parsed[0]; $text = $parsed[1]; $text = "~~~" . $text . "~~~" . $colorClass; return $text; } } ?> <script type="text/javascript"> function postit() { var preview = document.getElementById("preview").value; var submit = document.getElementById("post").value; var text = <?php getit(submit); ?> var t = text[0]; preview = t; } </script> <textarea id="preview" cols=70 rows=5 readonly>Preview box</textarea> <p> <textarea id="post" cols=70 rows=5/>Submit box</textarea> <p> <input type="button" onclick="postit();" value="Submit"/>

  • First test of a Windows Phone application

    - by Maurizio Reginelli
    I downloaded the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone and I wrote a simple application to make a first test of the emulator. In this application I have only a button with the property Content binded to a string called ButtonText and with the property Background binded to a SolidColorBrush named FillColor. I handled the Click event with this code: void MyButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { if (toggle == true) { ButtonText = "Blue"; FillColor = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Blue); } else { ButtonText = "Red"; FillColor = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Red); } toggle = !toggle; } Unfortunately this doesn't work. While the Content of the Button changes each time the button is pressed, I cannot say the same for the Background which remains at the same color. Could you tell me what is wrong? Thank you. I also post the XAML: <Grid x:Name="ContentGrid" Grid.Row="1"> <Button Name="MyButton" Width="300" Height="300" Content="{Binding Path=ButtonText}" Background="{Binding Path=FillColor}" /> </Grid>
