  Setup: 1) a string trie database formed from linked nodes and a vector array linking to the next node terminating in a leaf, 2) a recursive regular expression function that if A) char '*' continues down all paths until string length limit is reached, then continues down remaining string paths if valid, and B) char '?' continues down all paths for 1 char and then continues down remaining string paths if valid. 3) after reg expression the candidate strings are measured for edit distance against the 'try' string. Problem: the reg expression works fine for adding chars or swapping ? for a char but if the remaining string has an error then there is not a valid path to a terminating leaf; making the matching function redundant. I tried adding a 'step-over' ? char if the end of the node vector was reached and then followed every path of that node - allowing this step-over only once; resulted in a memory exception; I cannot find logically why it is accessing the vector out of range - bactracking? Questions: 1) how can the regular expression step over an invalid char and continue with the path? 2) why is swapping the 'sticking' char for '?' resulting in an overflow? Still have other issues to work out - it loops infinitely adding the ? and backtracking to remove it, then repeat. But, moving forward now. Revised question: why during backtracking is the position index accumulating and/or not deincrementing - so at somepoint it calls w->alpha[pos]... with an invalid position that is either remaining from the next node or somehow incremented pos+1 when passing upward?

• WCF GZip Compression Request/Response Processing

  How do I get a WCF client to process server responses which have been GZipped or Deflated by IIS? On IIS, I've followed the instructions here on how to make IIS 6 gzip all responses (where the request contained "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate") emitted by .svc wcf services. On the client, I've followed the instructions here and here on how to inject this header into the web request: "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate". Fiddler2 shows the response is binary and not plain old Xml. The client crashes with an exception which basically says there's no Xml header, which ofcourse is true. In my IClientMessageInspector, the app crashes before AfterReceiveReply is called. Some further notes: (1) I can't change the WCF service or client as they are supplied by a 3rd party. I can however attach behaviors and/or message inspectors via configuration if this is the right direction to take. (2) I don't want to compress/uncompress just the soap body, but the entire message. Any ideas/solutions? * SOLVED * It was not possible to write a WCF extension to achieve these goals. Instead I followed this CodeProject article which advocate a helper class: public class CompressibleHttpRequestCreator : IWebRequestCreate { public CompressibleHttpRequestCreator() { } WebRequest IWebRequestCreate.Create(Uri uri) { HttpWebRequest httpWebRequest = Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(HttpWebRequest), BindingFlags.CreateInstance | BindingFlags.Public | BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance, null, new object[] { uri, null }, null) as HttpWebRequest; if (httpWebRequest == null) { return null; } httpWebRequest.AutomaticDecompression =DecompressionMethods.GZip | DecompressionMethods.Deflate; return httpWebRequest; } } and also, an addition to the application configuration file: <configuration> <system.net> <webRequestModules> <remove prefix="http:"/> <add prefix="http:" type="Pajocomo.Net.CompressibleHttpRequestCreator, Pajocomo" /> </webRequestModules> </system.net> </configuration> What seems to be happening is that WCF eventually asks some factory or other deep down in system.net to provide an HttpWebRequest instance, and we provide the helper that will be asked to create the required instance. In the WCF client configuration file, a simple basicHttpBinding is all that is required, without the need for any custom extensions. When the application runs, the client Http request contains the header "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate", the server returns a gzipped web response, and the client transparently decompresses the http response before handing it over to WCF. When I tried to apply this technique to Web Services I found that it did NOT work. Although the helper class was executed in the same was as when used by the WCF client, the http request did not contain the "Accept-Encoding: ..." header. To make this work for Web Services, I had to edit the Web Proxy class, and add this method: protected override System.Net.WebRequest GetWebRequest(Uri uri) { System.Net.HttpWebRequest rq = (System.Net.HttpWebRequest)base.GetWebRequest(uri); rq.AutomaticDecompression = DecompressionMethods.GZip | DecompressionMethods.Deflate; return rq; } Note that it did not matter whether the CompressibleHttpRequestCreator and block from the application config file were present or not. For web services, only overriding GetWebRequest in the Web Service Proxy worked.

• How can I truncate an NSString to a set length?

  I searched, but surprisingly couldn't find an answer. I have a long NSString that I want to shorten. I want the maximum length to be around 20 characters. I read somewhere that the best solution is to use substringWithRange. Is this the best way to truncate a string? NSRange stringRange = {0,20}; NSString *myString = @"This is a string, it's a very long string, it's a very long string indeed"; NSString *shortString = [myString substringWithRange:stringRange]; It seems a little delicate (crashes if the string is shorter than the maximum length). I'm also not sure if it's Unicode-safe. Is there a better way to do it? Does anyone have a nice category for this?

• WPF ComboBox Binding to non string object

  I'm using MVVM (MVVM Light Toolkit) and have a property on the view model which exposes a list of objects. The objects contain two properties, both strings, which correlate to an abbreviation and a description. I want the ComboBox to expose the pairing as "abbreviation - description". If I use a data template, it does this easily. I have another property on the view model which represents the object that should display as selected -- the chosen item in the ComboBox. I'm binding the ItemsSource to the list, as it represents the universe of available selections, and am trying to bind the SelectedItem to this object. I'm killing myself trying to figure out why I can't get it to work, and feeling more like a fraud by the hour. In trying to learn why this works, I created the same approach with just a list of strings, and a selected string. This works perfectly. So, it clearly has something to do with the typing... perhaps something in choosing equality? Or perhaps it has to do with the data template?   Hi guys, i recently got a prebuild application which uses MYOB odbc connection to myob file. the odbc connection works perfectly in that application i uses the same odbc connection string in other application but it failed to open in that application. the connection string is perfectly identical but it wont works the new application. What I want to do is write a function that compares two "strings" and then returns 1 first word is larger than the second, the opposite if word 2 is larger than word 1, and 0 if the two words are equal.   Hello, I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to launch an intent within an ExpandableListView. Basically one of the "Groups" is Phone Number and it's child is the number.   I am implementing a matrix convolution blur on the iPhone. The following code converts the UIImage supplied as an argument of the blur function into a CGImageRef, and then stores the RGBA values in a standard C char array.   Hi, Something weird has started happening to my project with Dynamic Data. Suddenly I am now getting connection errors when going to the DD navigation pages, but things work fine on the default DD main page, and also other MVC pages I've added in myself work fine to the database. Any ideas?   Hi guys, I am a beginner in NLP and NLTK. I am very interested in NLP and hence joined a weekend course on AI in some local institution, which requires me to do a project for completion of the course, and I decided to do it in NLP. The problem is,the instructor is not good at all for this course (According to me she is just a charlatan) (or may not be very interested in teaching as this is her last batch here after which the institute is going to send her out). So I am stuck in a situation where where I got to finish this project in a month to one and half months period, but as a naive person in the field I am feeling it very difficult to comprehend the things required to decide on project. (Also, as I am working full time, I am not finding enough time to dedicate on this). I considered using NLTK toolkit in python for the project for following reasons. (1) Python is famous for ease of use, rapid prototyping and very active community (considering very short span of time I have, and as I am a C programmer by profession, I need a language that I can learn fast and is simple to use). (2) NLTk has good review, and extensive documentation and a very active community. So the problem is what project should I take up, so that I can learn something and will be able to finish project in time.   Hi, Continuous Integration servers like Hudson are a pretty amazing addition to software development. I work in an academic research lab, and I'd love to apply similar principles to scientific data analysis. I want a dashboard-like view of which collections of data are fine, which ones are failing their tests (simple shell scripts, mostly), and so on. A lot like the Chromium dashboard (WARNING: page takes a long time to load). It takes work from at least 4 people, and maybe 10 or 12 hours of computer time, to bring our data (from behavioral studies) from its raw form to its final, easily-analyzed form. I've tried Hudson and buildbot, but neither is really appropriate to our workflow. We just want to run a bunch of tests on maybe fifty independent collections of subject data, and display the results nicely. SO! Does anyone have a recommendation of a way to generate this kind of report easily? Or, can you think of a good way to shoehorn this kind of workflow into a continuous integration server? Or, can you recommend a unit testing dashboard that could deal with tests that are little shell scripts rather than little functions? Thank you!

  I have a stored time value which is of the format H:mm:ss. The hours may be any value from 0 up through several days. This data is sent in an XML tag and processed by XSL to be displayed. The display that I want is of the format: D days, HH:mm:ss (hours/minutes) Where the last tag shows hours if HH is greater than 0, minutes if it is 0. Given the original HH, which may be more than 24, I know I need the floor of HH / 24 to get the days value. Then the original HH % 24 gives me the leftover hours. I have also handled the minutes and hours question using xsl:when and xsl:if. It's getting days and hours from the hours value that has me stumped.   Hi, This might seem like a FAQ on stackoverflow, but my requirements are a little different. While I have previously used BackgroundRB and DJ for running background processes in ruby, my requirement this time is to run some heavy analytics and mathematical computations on a huge set of data, and I need to do this only about the first 15 days of the month. Going by this, I am tempted to use cron and run a ruby script to accomplish this goal. What I would like to know / understand is: 1 - Is using cron a good idea (cause I'm not a system admin, and so while I have basic idea of cron, I'm not overly confident of doing it perfectly) 2 - Can we somehow modify DJ to run only on the first 15 days of the month (with / without using cron), and then just stop and exit once all the jobs in the queue for the day are over (don't want it to ping the DB every time for a new job...whatever the jobs will be in the queue when DJ starts, that will be all). I'm not sure if I have put the question in the right manner, but any help in this direction will be much appreciated. Thanks

• Fuzzy string matching algorithm in Python

  Hi guys, I'm trying to find some sort of a good, fuzzy string matching algorithm. Direct matching doesn't work for me — this isn't too good because unless my strings are a 100% similar, the match fails. The Levenshtein method doesn't work too well for strings as it works on a character level. I was looking for something along the lines of word level matching e.g. String A: The quick brown fox. String B: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. These should match as all words in string A are in string B. Now, this is an oversimplified example but would anyone know a good, fuzzy string matching algorithm that works on a word level. Thanks in advance.

  Hi all! I'm wanting to output two different views (one as a string that will be sent as an email), and the other the page displayed to a user. Is this possible in ASP.NET MVC beta? I've tried multiple examples: RenderPartial to String in ASP.NET MVC Beta If I use this example, I receive the "Cannot redirect after HTTP headers have been sent.". MVC Framework: Capturing the output of a view If I use this, I seem to be unable to do a redirectToAction, as it tries to render a view that may not exist. If I do return the view, it is completely messed up and doesn't look right at all. Does anyone have any ideas/solutions to these issues i have, or have any suggestions for better ones? Many thanks!
