• How likely are IE9 jumplists to be useful?

  Having installed the Internet Explorer 9 release, I've experimented with the jumplists feature available in Windows 7 - drag a site tab down to the taskbar to create a jumplist. Works for Facebook and Twitter, anyway. I have my suspicions about the utility of this feature - it's a neat and possibly useful feature, yet is limited to the combination of IE9 and Windows 7, plus sites implementing the appropriate code. Given the relatively small audience at this point, is there any value in adding code to support this feature? And would it likely be more useful for a web application (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) than a typical website?

• Problem in Loading certain Websites in Ubuntu 11.10

  I have a DSL connection in Ubuntu 11.04 and am having problems loading content from certain websites mostly providing CDN services. I have tried every suggestion asked at problem loading internet pages as I have the same problem. Also tried to remove the DNS Cache and Browser Cache. I have tried using Google DNS Server: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but nothing seems to work. Though when I browse the websites in Windows XP then it does not pose any problem. This problem has come up only few days ago and has affected every browser(Chrome, Firefox and Opera) in Ubuntu 11.04. Thanks in advance.

• Ethernet on an Acer Aspire One D255E not working

  Ok very frustrated here, but hopefully can find an answer here. I have an Acer Aspire One netbook D255E. I installed 10.04 desktop edition via live USB, only to find out ethernet is not connecting. The thing is, I had installed previously 10.04 thru wubi as 30GB, but wanted more so did this install. With the Wubi install it worked great internet worked added LibO, mint menu ect. So I know it could work, and it works on Win 7(what little GB is left). I have ethernet enabled, and gave myself all permissions, but still not working. Thank you for any help, and if you do more details in the steps i need to take the better :).

  I'm using an HP Pavilion dv6000 I've looked at other answers similar to this question how ever when I look at my network symbol it doesn't say anything that the answer below says "Make sure that your wifi hardware switch is on or not. It is either F2 or F12 or near to it. Once the switch is enabled, there is a small fan-like applet on the top panel (Gnome Network Manager), fourth from the right. Click on it and if there is no tick mark on the option 'Enable Wireless', enable it. Wait till your wifi connection name appears." it how says 'Enable Networking' my wi-fi switch is on and I've tried using terminal to kill the applet as another answer suggests trying. Does anyone have any other ideas that might help? Just in case anybodies curious as to how I'm posting this I'm on my other ubuntu laptop that's running an older version.

• Problem downloading .exe file from Amazon S3 with a signed URL in IE

  I have a large collection of Windows exe files which are being stored/distributed using Amazon S3. We use signed URLs to control access to the files and this works great except in one case when trying to download a .exe file using Internet Explorer (version 8). It works just fine in Firefox. It also works fine if you don't use a signed URL (but that is not an option). What happens is that the IE downloader changes the name from 'myfile.exe' to 'myfile[1]' and Windows no longer recognizes it as an executable. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

• Why do I have to reconnect my usb router cable?

  I have a Iball Baton ADSD2+ Router. It's working fine but the problem is when I boot into Ubuntu I have to unplug the usb cable and then plug it again, then it starts working. Why do I have to re connect my usb cable? Let me know if you need more details. Edit : I am using a direct connection. I mean to say I don't have to enter a username or password. I am connected to internet as soon as I start my router. The problem is if I start my router before my computer I have to re connect my usb cable. Thanks.

  As many know, if you serve a page over https and the content loads resources (images, stylesheets, js, SWF objects, etc) over http, older versions of Internet Explorer will show the user a warning saying "This page contains both secure and non-secure items". This is discomforting to many non-technical users. Usually, I can look at the HTML source and identify which item(s) are triggering this error. Sometimes a Flash object will load something else or some embedded javascript will put a new object in the DOM and trigger this.   I'm using ubuntu 12.04.1, last upgraded from 12.04 I'm using mts mblaze to access internet. Two days ago, I was using vpn on my system, suddenly cisco disconnected & my system hung while I was accessing my office system. I didnt' have any other idea, so I forcibly shut down the system. • CSS not loading when site is viewed via Windows VPN

  Internal site has recently been redesigned, but IE8 does not seem to be loading the new css rules only when viewed via VPN. I really have no clue what to look for. I can't reproduce the problem, but it's apparently affecting client for the last month. • How do I ensure all of the ports on my machine are open or reachable?

  I was testing port connectivity on my machine because WoW (which uses TCP ports 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999) couldn't connect to the Internet. So I downloaded PFPortChecker application and ran it using Wine (v1.3). After I tried to check every port, it seems like they're not reachable/closed. Why is that? My firewall is disabled so why is this happening? How can I open these ports and how can I see if these ports are opened or not? Also, how can I determine which application is using them?

  So I got VirtualBox just for Ubuntu Server, I'm currently Running Ubuntu 12.04 as my main OS. But when I got everything set up in Ubuntu Server 12.04, including my ports forwarded and a test Minecraft server up... I realized that nobody could join my public IP I sent out, not even me! I can connect to the ipv4 address. It acts like I didn't forward my ports. But I forwarded 25565 to Input and Output and they're both TCP and UDP. Is this just a virtual box issue or am I doing something wrong? * Using Eth0 wired connection

  Good day! I recently installed 12.04. I am having a hard time connecting to the Internet using my Sun Broadband Wireless. I installed the 64-bit version. I am from the Philippines. When I plug in my USB stick, it does not show up on the Network Manager/ no new connection can be detected. I try to edit it using Edit Connections but still to no avail. I have tried doing these steps from kenji08, kartonista, and from review-ninja (for this one, I can't seem to get pass the first step.) I hope those information can help.

• Fastest light-weight image viewer over forwarded x11 session (linux)

  I have a slow network connection over which I'm forwarding x11 over ssh. I want to view images on the remote host (Ubuntu) quickly and efficiently. I'm looking for an image viewer that will take into account the image viewer window's resolution and downsize the image before sending it over the network, instead of sending the full size image. The images I want to view will be around 5MB and I only need to be able to browse through tiny thumbnails of the images to identify the image I'm looking for. It is not necessary to be able to see more than one image at a time. Highest speed over slow network connection is the priority. Thanks!   I have several hosting accounts with companies, and plan to keep them. However, I would like to try my hand at creating my own home web-server, both for fun and for the learning experience. I would like to know the expenses involved, including: electricity costs (greater than light bulb?) internet costs (will I have to upgrade my internet? Or is 3-5Mbps upload speed fine for a web server with medium amount of traffic? Would I have to get a separate internet connection?) other unknown expenses Consider that I will configure the web server myself, so that is not an expense. Also consider that I already have a computer (year-old Dell laptop, 15R) to use to be dedicated as the web server.

• Win 2k3 server's network problem.

  I'm running 4 of Win2k3 64bit servers in the same subnet. It's been more than an year that I've running them without a problem. Recently, I kept losing the connection to one of the server. Let's say it's 'server A' which has a problem. Losing the connection means that I can't access to server A from the other servers. I've checked if server A has any internet connection problems or are there any abnomal event logs in the eventvwr - but haven't found any problems. The problem usually resolved if I restart the server again. But as time goes by, it keeps happen again and again. I can't afford to restart the server every time, and I really want to find out the reason. Can anyone help me out? Let me know if you guys need any of more information.

• How can I solve Windows PPTP VPN issues?

  I'm having persistent problems with Windows PPTP VPN connections. The VPN appears up whilst the tunnel won't transfer traffic (ping to a remote IP within the VPN works for a while, and then fails). The client receives routing information via DHCP. When the connection fails, the routing table is still correct so I don't think it's a routing problem. My internet connection is via an ADSL2 line. There's software to deal with PPTP problems, like TunnelRat, but I don't want to install v1.1 of the .NET framework and I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem (I have multiple VPN connections and some are more unreliable than others). What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Alternatively, what can I do to keep the connection alive?

I tried some of the steps as mentioned here: Connect to a network Connect to a workplace Use my Internet Connection (VPN) Then type server IP address and then my username & password. After creating a VPN connection, I can see I am connected to it. Now I want to browse files on the server. But I have no clue where I should look for them. I was thinking more of a simple step, like, Windows Run > Type ip address > \\124.345.678.900, then a prompt asking username and password, and finally a window opens to view the files. I tried to google it, but still unable to view files. Please help. Update: I didn't mention that when I try to connect to server via \\124.345.678.900 I get 0x80070043 error message.

• Bridging a non-persistent PPP connection to wireless (or wired) in Windows XP

  I have a 3G modem-like device (eMobile's D01NX, PC card style, for any Japan nerds out there) that I use to connect my PC to the Internet. I'd like to bridge this connection with another computer either via an ad-hoc wireless network, or a simple cross-over cable (either are options). However, when I open "Network Connections", I do not see the PPP connection (otherwise I could click both and bridge). I believe this is because there is software (provided by the vendor) that is handling the card directly and registering a PPP connection dynamically. • Network connectivity issues with Windows Store

  I have my Windows 8 Pro build 9200 installed on my Dell laptop. I want to install some new apps and updates from the Store but there might be some network problem that caused the downloading gauge showing up but not really running at all. I followed some instructions that switched from local user to my Microsoft account, but this "Please wait" screen keeps showing and I don't really know why. I still have internet access and can use some apps like People, Mail, etc. with my account logged in, I can surf the net using Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. I did another test using cmd with ping -t google.com and it showed that my laptop has internet access. Anybody knows a solution to make the Store working properly? Or is there any workaround to switch to the Microsoft account instead of a local user account?
