How can I do an inverse ARP lookup in Windows and/or Linux? Say that I have the MAC address of wireless access point which is up and running in the network, but I forgot it's IP address?
Hi
I need to control a Windows 7 PC via VNC from a Mac in an office LAN. Since the IPs are dynamically assigned, I'd like the PC to appear in my "Places" and in the automatically detected nearby servers in VNC client I'm using -- both of which require the PC to advertise its VNC server via Bonjour (right?).
I tried installing ultravnc, which works when I access it directly by IP, but it doesn't seem to advertise itself in the network.
Any ideas?
I found out yesterday that you can use a remote control with a Mac. And I've also heard that iSight web cams can be programmed to detect any kind of movements?
What are some other cool/interesting features that a user new to Macs wouldn't likely know about?
Hi, I'm using Snow Leopard and I've just downloaded Google Chrome for Mac. However it doesn't load any page:
This webpage is not available.
Error 104 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_FAILED): The attempt to connect to the server failed.
I've googled about it but I had no luck, only answers for Windows. Needless to say I have no firewalls and every other browser or application can connect to the internet.
My hard disk crashed and I need to reinstall Mac OS X. I restart, insert the installation DVD, press c on the keyboard and the dvd ejects. I've tried different DVDs, even CDs. It's a Macbook Pro from march 2008.
Is it broken? Or can it be something more severe like the firewire controller on the motherboard (since I noticed this after my hard drive started to act strangely)? I've ran Apple Hardware Test successfully.
Hi,
I am starting to use Quicksilver in Mac OS X. At the moment I just know how to "call it" (CMD+I in my case) and open an app. I wonder how could I do, once itunes is running, just to tell to stop playing a song, using QS, and if not, someother workaround, just using Keyboard, in the simplest possible wy.
Thanks
Software Update has notified me of a new OSX system update (including the Mac App Store). It claims to be about 1.6GB in size. I have 4.6GB of free space on my hard drive. However, when I attempt to actually run the update, it fails because it claims to need 6.9GB of free space. Is there any particular reason Software Update needs so much space beyond the downloaded file size and are there any work arounds?
Thanks.
I am using RealVNC server Enterprise on the Mac.
Real VNC Enterprise Viewer on PC.
I am able to connect it properly but colors are weird, 16 colors or only blue color is showing up (see below)
How do I resolve this?
Did anyone else notice the picture quality degrade after uploading to picasa web albums from Picasa 3.5 Mac?
I uploaded them in the original setting which is 1600 by 1200 and did selected the option to not compress jpg quality. On picasa web albums however, I notice that the colors look faded and the picture are a bit grainy.
Anyone have the same problems? Any alternatives to an album sharing site with easy upload from picasa or iphoto?
I'm basically looking for something like this but available on Mac.
I am trying to connect a new workstation to our wireless multifunction printer and I'm having a hell of a time getting the device to spit out an IP for me to connect to.
Is there a way I can scan the network somehow?
If it makes a difference, the new workstation is using MacOS X 10.6
Thanks in advance :)
My Macbook Pro already dual boots MacOSX or Ubuntu with ReFit. I would like to add Windows 7 in the mix. I can make enough space in the Mac partition to accomodate that, but just want to be sure the Windows installation is not going to wipe out anything and I will still be able to access both OS.
Anything else to watch out for is welcome.
(Sorry for not posting a question about an actual problem, but I figured that when I have a problem, it will just be too late).
Is there an emulator that would enable me to test the appearance of an email as it is being read on a smartphone (without specifying the phone type)? What I would like to be able to do, is to send an email to this emulator, and then scroll down through the email using the emulator.
Ive searched online, and any emulators I found are for testing software rather than exploring the visual appearance of email.
I'm using Mac OSX - thanks in advance.
I use VMWare Fusion on Mac OSX and backup my system with Time Machine. Now I read, that this will not backup my virtual machine with usable results. What are my possibilities to back up my virtual machine?
How can I easily import all addresses in an email to my address book in Entourage, including the from and CC fields?
This is for a friend and she uses a Mac.
After googling for some Mac OS X terminal shortcuts, I wanted to find how can I go back characters on a line on the terminal or words or similar. I found ALT + B but it does not work.
Do you know some other shortcuts, or how can I customize them or links to cheat sheets?
Does anyone knows if it is possible to have more than 16 desktop "spaces" with Mac OS X Snow Leopard?
I know that it does not seem possible at all from the System Preferences settings, but I was wondering if there exists some software tools that would enable one to use more Spaces, say 20-25.
Thanks for the help.
I've recently switched to a Mac and want to improve my workflow a bit. I often need to run scripts using the terminal that are in several different folders.
How do I create something like Windows shortcuts that launches the Terminal app with it's initial working directory set to a particular folder?
Hi,
When I ran the uptime on my MacBookPro machine I got the following result:
Last login: Thu Jun 3 14:43:40 on ttys000
Osama-Gamal-MBP-2:~ iOsama$ uptime
14:49 up 7 days, 20:10, 2 users, load averages: 0.29 0.24 0.24
Why it lists that there are two users? is it normal? and who is the other user, is it the root user or what?
PS: I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.3
I am looking for a application under Mac OS X that would have most of Outlook (Windows) functionnalities, mainly mail (including rules and tagging), calendar, contacts and Echange 2007+ integration (not using pop or imap)...
Anybody got that? I don't want to have to wait for Outlook 2011 which is rumored to arrived... in 2011!
Thanks.
I have created a 3-fold brochure in Mac iWork - Pages.
If I print the brochure then I can 3-fold it and everything is fine.
But if I want to export as PDF then I get a 2-A4 size pages, and this distorts the user the order of the pages, I would like to export each layout as a separate page.
The 'Layout Break' option is diabled and I don't know how to enable it?
Any ideas? Thanks.
I use SweetFM on my Mac (running OS X Leopard) to play (and export) last.fm music. But I find it annoying I have to look at the station on the website (in Safari 4) and enter it in manually in SweetFM. How can I make it so the little "play" buttons () will open in SweetFM instead of in Safari?
I'm looking for a piece of software or a script that will take my iTunes library and give me an output (either as HTML or PDF) of simply a list of all the albums I have, preferably as Artist - Album format. Working with iTunes 9 on a Mac.
So I'm a programmer and I run my own web development company. In the past I have been able to get away with just doing some simple number crunching at the end of each year to do my taxes, but my company has grown substantially over the last year, and now that I am sitting down to do my taxes it has become an absolute nightmare because none of my information is organized at all. I want to be abel to easily keep track of my monthly and yearly financial data for my company (I use a Mac), any suggestions?
