Problem convert column values from VARCHAR(n) to DECIMAL

I have a SQL Server 2000 database with a column of type VARCHAR(255). All the data is either NULL, or numeric data with up to two points of precision (e.g. '11.85'). I tried to run the following T-SQL query but received the error 'Error converting data type varchar to numeric' SELECT CAST([MyColumn] AS DECIMAL) FROM [MyTable]; I tried a more specific cast, which also failed. SELECT CAST([MyColumn] AS DECIMAL(6,2)) FROM [MyTable]; I also tried the following to see if any data is non-numeric, and the only values returned were NULL. SELECT ISNUMERIC([MyColumn]), [MyColumn] FROM [MyTable] WHERE ISNUMERIC([MyColumn]) = 0; I tried to convert to other data types, such as FLOAT and MONEY, but only MONEY was successful. So I tried the following: SELECT CAST(CAST([MyColumn] AS MONEY) AS DECIMAL) FROM [MyTable]; ...which worked just fine. Any ideas why the original query failed? Will there be a problem if I first convert to MONEY and then to DECIMAL? Thanks!

PHP MySQLi isn't letting me alter a table (adding a new column)

Well thats pretty much it. This is my query: $query = 'ALTER TABLE permissions ADD '.$name.' INT NOT NULL DEFAULT \'0\''; Where $name is already checked to exist with only lower case alpha letters, and not more than 20 length. Im just starting this out with very simple names. The next 4 lines of code after that one are: if($stmt = $db -> prepare($query)) { $success = $stmt -> execute(); $stmt -> close(); if(!$success) echo 'ERROR: Unsuccessful query: ',$db->error,PHP_EOL; } And I get back, every time ERROR: Unsuccessful query: And no error message. Is there a way to get more error messages so I can see what is failing? I can add new columns through phpmyadmin, but that really doesnt help me at all. The $db is fine, i do lots of stuff before and after this one section. It is only adding new column to the table that fails. side question: prepare() rejected my query every time when i tried to make those 2 variables, the $name and the 0 value as ? ? prepared statement values. Thats why they are in the real query and not bound later. If i could change that too I would like that.

How to detect column conflicts with Hibernate?

So let's say I have an ArrayList full of Products that need to be committed to the database via Hibernate. There are already a large number of Products in the database. Each product has an ID. Note this is NOT the PK that is autogenerated by Hibernate. My questions is: what is the best way to detect conflicts with this ID? I am looking for a relatively efficient method of obtaining, from the the database, a List of Products that share an ID with any of the Products in my ArrayList. This is all in a single table called Products and the ID attribute is in column ProductID. The way I've done it is grabbing a list of all Products in the database, and compared each one with each entry in my ArrayList - but that is seriously inefficient and I don't think it would work well with a larger database. How should it be done? Thanks. I say "relatively" efficient because efficiency is not the primary concern, but it shouldn't take noticeably long to test against a table of ~1000-5000 rows. Help? EDIT* I'm very new to hibernate and below is the best I've come up with. Fluent NHibernate - How to map the foreign key column as a property

I am sure this is a straightforward question but consider the following: I have a reference between company and sector as follows: public class Company { public Guid ID { get; set; } public Sector Sector { get; set; } public Guid SectorID { get; set; } } public class Sector { public Guid ID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } } Ok. What I want is the SectorID of the Company object to be populated after I go: (new Company()).Sector = new Sector() { Name="asdf" } and do a flush. The mapping I am using kindly creates an additional column in the database called Sector_Id in the Company table, but this is not available as a property on Company. I want the SectorID property to be filled. The mapping i am currently using in the CompanyMap is References(c = c.Sector).Cascade.All(); Does anyone have any ideas?

I would like to see a list of all the tables and columns that refer (either directly or indirectly) a specific column in the 'main' table via a foreign key constraint that has the ON DELETE=CASCADE setting missing. The tricky part is that there would be an indirect relationships buried across up to 5 levels deep. (example: ... great-grandchild- FK3 = grandchild = FK2 = child = FK1 = main table). We need to dig up the leaf tables-columns, not just the very 1st level. The 'good' part about this is that execution speed isn't of concern, it'll be run on a backup copy of the production db to fix any relational issues for the future. I did SELECT * FROM sys.foreign_keys but that gives me the name of the constraint - not the names of the child-parent tables and the columns in the relationship (the juicy bits). I am however not able to correctly store the read-in vector in a matrix. The following code S <- diag(6) S[lower.tri(S,diag=T)] <- d fills the lower matrix by column, while it should fill it by row. Using matrix() does allow for the option byrow=TRUE, but this will fill in the whole matrix, not just the lower half (with diagonal). Is it possible to have both: only fill the lower matrix (with diagonal) and do it by row? (separate issue I'm having: LISREL uses 'D+01' while R only recognises 'E+01' for scientific notation. Can you change this in R to accept also 'D'?)

I have a list view that will displays guest passes details (I.e) like member name and issue date and I have two text boxes those are for entering member name and issue date . member name text box is auto complete text box that working fine.... but the problem is when I am entering the name that is not in member table at this time it will accept and displays a blank field in list view in member name column and member id is stored as "0" in guest pass table ...... CSS to Make 2 Column Content Areas

I'm trying to stray away from using tables to form the layout of my content, and I can think of two alternatives that I'd like to better learn: (1) styling list items to be side-by-side, and (2) using div blocks that float onto the same line. Both of these would have their own uses for what I'm working on. I'm already using div tags to form the entire layout of my three-column template, but what I need to do now is a bit different. In case it helps, my project can be found here. In short, here's my question; how would I style a div so that the width of it is 50% of the width of the area it occupies, rather than 50% of the width of the page? As for my other question, what would be the best approach to styling list items so that they are side-by-side? I'm working on a registration script now, and instead of using a table with "Username" on the left and the input text on the right, I can use two list items. It's late and I've been working on this project of mine for about 8 hours straight now, so I apologize if I'm asking anything confusing. Feel free to ask me any questions about what I'm trying to do. Displaying text in correct column

After getting a helpful answer here, I have run into yet another problem: displaying two or more strings in the column I want it to be displayed in. For an example of the problem I have, I want this output: Come here! where? not here! but instead get Come here! where? not here! when I use the code cout << left << setw(30) << "Come here!" << " where? " << setw(20) << "not here!" << endl; I made sure (I think) that the width of both columns could contain the two strings, but no matter how large I set the width of the columns to be, the error is still there.

Updating physics for animated models

For a new game we have do set up a scene with a minimum of 30 bone animated models.(shooter) The problem is that the update process for the animated models takes too long. Thats what I do: Each character has ~30 bones and for every update tick the animation gets calculated and every bone fires a event with the new matrix. The physics receives the event with the new matrix and updates the collision shape for that bone. The time that it takes to build the animation isn't that bad (0.2ms for 30 Bones - 6ms for 30 models). But the main problem is that the physic engine (Bullet) uses a diffrent matrix for transformation and so its necessary to convert it. Problem with NHibernate

I am trying to get a list of Products that share the Category. NHibernate returns no product which is wrong.
